For the bearing capacity evaluation, dynamic pile tests instead of static pile tests have been commonly used in embedded piles, which are known to have low noise and low vibration construction method. The objective of this study is to analyze the bearing capacity and penetration behaviors of embedded piles, which are constructed in different ground conditions, by using force and velocity signals obtained in the final blows during construction of embedded piles. For the dynamic pile analyses, the CAse Pile Wave Analysis Program (CAPWAP) and Wave Equation Analysis of Piles (WEAP) have been commonly used. In this study, the CAPWAP and WEAP are used for the analyses of the dynamic pile tests, which are conducted on embedded piles. The input values, output values, and force-velocity graphs of CAPWAP determined by analyzing the measured force-velocity signals are investigated. In addition, similar force-velocity singals are obtained from the WEAP by analyzing the input values of the WEAP. Considering the subsurface investigation results around the pile tips, if the N-value increases exponentially along the depth, toe quake value should be small, and therefore large bearing capacity is identified. On the contrary, if the N-value increases linearly, the bearing capacity is small because of large toe quake value. Furthermore, the stiffness of hammer cushion and pile cushion, which is difficult to find correct values, is recommended lower than 500 kN/mm. This study demonstrates that the results of WEAP may be similar to those of CAPWAP and the WEAP can be used to estimate the bearing capacity of embedded piles.

Opening the tip of a PHC pile, under a constant driving energy, can result in an increment of penetration depth due to the decrement of driving resistance. Therefore, the bearing capacity of an open-ended PHC pile may become larger than that of a closed-ended PHC pile by virtue of the increased embedded length. However, two main problems can be caused by opening the end of PHC pile. First problem is the variation of bearing capacity by opening the pile tip, and the second one is whether the tip of an open-ended PHC pile will be failured by a high pressure developed by the soil plug. In this study, model pile tests in calibration chamber were performed to investigate the practicability of open-ended PHC pile in view of both the pile bearing capacity and the possible failure of the pile tip. According to the test results, the total bearing capacity of open-ended piles approaches the total bearing capacity of closed-ended piles with the increase of the penetration depth. The failure of pile tip could be occurred in the region of 0.8~1.1 times as the inside diameter from the pile tip.
This study conducted to obtain the lateral resistance of a wind power foundation reinforced with piles through an model experiment. In particular, the lateral resistance of the foundation was compared with the existing gravity-type wind power foundation by integrating the pile, the wind power generator foundation, and the rocky ground. In addition, changes in the lateral resistance and bending moment of the pile were analyzed by embeded depths of the pile. As a result, it was found that the lateral resistance increased with the depth of embedment of the piles. In particular, the pile's resistance increase ratio was 2.11 times greater in the case where the pile embedded up to the rock layer than the case where the pile was embedded into the riprap. It was found that the location of the maximum bending moment occurred at the interface between the wind turbine foundation and the riprap layer when the pile embeded to the rock layer. Through this, as the lateral resistance of the wind power foundation reinforced with piles is greater than that of the existing gravity-type wind power foundation, it is understood that it can be a more advantageous construction method in terms of safety.

In this study, the model tests were conducted on the short piles installed in sands under a horizontal pullout load to investigate their behavior characteristics. From the horizontal loading tests where dimensions of the pile diameter and length, and loading point were varied, the horizontal pullout resistance and the rotational and translational movement pattern of the pile were investigated. As a result, the horizontal pullout resistance of the pile embedded in sands was dependent on the pile length, diameter, loading point, etc. The ultimate horizontal pullout load tended to increase as the loading point (h/L) moved to the bottom from the top of the pile, regardless of the ratio between the pile length and diameter (L/D), reached the maximum value at the point of h/L = 0.75, and decreased afterwards. When the horizontal pullout load acted on the upper part above the middle of the pile, the pile rotated clockwise and moved to the pullout direction, and the pivot point of the pile was located at 150-360mm depth below the ground surface. On the other hand, when the horizontal pullout load acted on the lower part of the pile, the pile rotated counterclockwise and travelled horizontally, and the rotational angle was very small.

Earthquake preparedness has become more important with recent increase in the number of earthquakes in Korea, but many existing structures are not prepared for earthquakes. There are various types of liquefaction prevention method that can be applied, such as compaction, replacement, dewatering, and inhibition of shear strain. However, most of the liquefaction prevention methods are applied before construction, and it is important to find optimal methods that can be applied to existing structures and that have few effects on the environment, such as noise, vibration, and changes in underground water level. The purpose of this study is to estimate the correlation between the displacement of a structure and variations of pore water pressure on the ground in accordance with the depth of the sheet file when liquidation occurs. To achieve this, a shaking table test was performed for Joo-Mun-Jin standard sand and an earth pressure, accelerometer, pore water pressure transducer, and LVDT were installed in both the non-liquefiable layer and the liquefiable layer to measure the subsidence and excess pore water pressure in accordance with the time of each embedded depth. Then the results were analyzed. A comparison of the pore water pressure in accordance with Hsp/Hsl was shown to prevent lateral water flow at 1, 0.85 and confirmed that the pore water pressure increased. In addition, the relationship between Hsp/Hsl and subsidence was expressed as a trend line to calculate the expected settlement rate formula for the embedded depth ratio.
The study deals with physical modeling of a typical three storeyed building frame supported by a pile group of four piles ($2{\times}2$) embedded in cohesive soil mass using three dimensional finite element analysis. For the purpose of modeling, the elements such as beams, slabs and columns, of the superstructure frame; and that of the pile foundation such as pile and pile cap are descretized using twenty noded isoparametric continuum elements. The interface between the pile and the soil is idealized using sixteen node isoparametric surface element. The soil elements are modeled using eight nodes, nine nodes and twelve node continuum elements. The present study considers the linear elastic behaviour of the elements of superstructure and substructure (i.e., foundation). The soil is assumed to behave non-linear. The parametric study is carried out for studying the effect of soil- structure interaction on response of the frame on the premise of sub-structure approach. The frame is analyzed initially without considering the effect of the foundation (non-interaction analysis) and then, the pile foundation is evaluated independently to obtain the equivalent stiffness; and these values are used in the interaction analysis. The spacing between the piles in a group is varied to evaluate its effect on the interactive behaviour of frame in the context of two embedment depth ratios. The response of the frame included the horizontal displacement at the level of each storey, shear force in beams, axial force in columns along with the bending moments in beams and columns. The effect of the soil- structure interaction is observed to be significant for the configuration of the pile groups and in the context of non-linear behaviour of soil.

Recently, earthquakes have occurred frequently in worldwide. These earthquakes cause various forms of natural and physical damage. In particular, liquefaction in which the ground shows liquid-like behavior causes great damage to the structure. Accordingly, various liquefaction damage reduction methods are being studied and developed. Therefore, in this study, a method of reducing liquefaction damage in the event of an earthquake applicable to existing structures was studied using the sheet pile method. The 1-G Shaking table test was performed and the ground was constructed with Jumunjin standard sand. A two-story model structure was produced by applying the similitude law, and the input wave applied a sine wave with an acceleration level of 0.6 g and a frequency of 10 Hz. The effect of reducing structure damage according to various embedded depth ratio was analyzed. As a result of the study, the structure settlement when the ground is reinforced by applying the sheet pile method is decreased by about 71% compared to when the ground is not reinforced, and the EDR with minimum settlement is "1". In addition, as the embedded depth ratio is increased, the calculation of the pore water pressure in the ground tends to be delayed due to the sheet pile. Based on these results, the relationship with structural settlement according to the embedded depth ratio is proposed as a relational equation with the graph. The results of this study are expected to be used as basic data in developing sheet pile methods applicable to existing structures in the future.

Three-dimensional FEM numerical analysis was performed to understand the behaviors of blocks and piles according to the horizontal load for the block breakwater combined with piles. The Modified Mohr-Coulomb model, the improved version of the Mohr-Coulomb model, was applied for the ground modeling. The cases when the pile is embedded only into the block, embedded to the riprap layer (H = 4.29 cm), and embedded to the ground down to 2H, 3H, and 4H were examined. The results of the laboratory model experiment and the numerical analysis showed similar horizontal resistance force-displacement behaviors. The pile showed rotational behavior up to the embedment depth of 1H~2H and bending behavior in the case of 3H~4H depth embedment. When the embedment depth of the pile is 3H or more, the pile shows a bending behavior, so it can be considered that the pile contributes significantly to the horizontal resistance of the block breakwater. The results of this study will be used for various numerical analyses for real-size structure design.

The data on the pile load tests performed on 35 large drilled shafts are analyzed to investigate the load-settlement characteristics of large drilled shafts embedded in bed rocks. Generally, the settlement of large drilled shafts embedded in bed rocks is too small to determine the ultimated load with application of the regulation in design code for either the total settlement or the residual settlement. Therefore, to determine the yield load of large drilled shafts embedded in bed rocks, p(load)-logS (settlement) curve method, which has been proposed originally for the driven pile, was applied to the investigation on the data of the pile load tests. This technique shows that the yield load can be determined accurately and easily rather than other conventional techniques such as P-S, logp-logS, S-logt, and P-S curve methods. An empirical equation is proposed to represent the relationship between pile load and settlement before the yield loading condition. And the settlement of piles was related with the depth embedded in rock as well as rock properties. Based on the investigation on the data of pile load tests, the resonable regulations f3r both the total settlement and the residual settlement are proposed to determine the yield load of large drilled shafts embedded in bed rocks.

The recent greenhouses are extremely light-weight structures and easily damaged by the strong winds due to the lack of uplift capacity of pile foundations. The uplift capacity of pile foundations are subject to the shape of the pile surface, diameter, weight, and embedded depths. etc. So, it is very important to figure out the most appropriate conditions on shape of the pile surface and it's embedding depths. to improve wind proof capability of pipe greenhouses. In this study, plane and corrugated pile surfaces were examined on their uplift capacity with 30 to 50 cm of embedding depths. The diameters of tested piles were 10 cm, 15 cm, and 20 cm, respectively. Compaction ratio of the tested soil was 80%. Each test run was repeated three times for the respective treatment. Obtained results are as follows; In all cases, as the diameter and the embedding depth were increased, the ultimate uplift capacity of the pile was also increased. And it was clear that the ultimate uplift capacity of corrugated pile was approximately two times as big as that of plain piles under same conditions.
