A common site of fracture in maxillary complete denture is on the anteroposterior midline that coincides with the notch for relief of the labial frenum. Various approaches to reduce the incidence of this type of fracture have been suggested. The most widely used technique is the reinforcement of acrylic resin denture base with several solid metal forms. But few comparative studies on the efficacy of metal reinforcements have been reported. This study was conducted to compare reinforcing effects of commonly available metal reinforcements, which include wire, metal mesh embedded in the denture base and metal plate affixed to the impression surface of denture base by silicoating technique. This was load on the posterior. The strain gauges were oriented perpendicular to the anteroposterior midline of maxillary polished denture surface at one labial and the four palatal sites Non-renforced denture was used as control. The results were as follows : 1. In the non-reinforced denture group, only tensile strains on the palatal polished surface were observed. The tensile strains decreased in the order of incisive papilla, posterior denture border area, mid palatal area and rugae area. Compressive strain was observed on the labial polished surface. 2. As compared with the non-reinforced denture group, the metal plate or the metal mesh reinforced denture groups showed reduced palatal tensile strains, and the metal mesh reinforcement had a better reinforcing effect than the metal plate. But both reinforced denture groups showed no difference in the amount of compressive strain on the labial polished surface when compared to the non-reinforced denture group. 3. The metal wire positioned just above the labial notch decreased the compressive strain on the labial polished surface. But the presence of metal wires in the palatal polished surface caused increase in tensile strains in the area.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the color change of denture base resins by coffee. Denture base resins for this study were Triad VLG Denture Base (Dentsply, York Div. U.S.A.), Premium Super-20 (Lang Dental Mfg. Co., Inc., U.S.A.) for denture base, Toughron Rebase (Miki Chemical Prod., Kyoto, Japan), Jet Repair Acrylic (Lang Dental Mfg. Co., Inc., U.S.A.), Triad Reline (Dentsply, fork Div. U.S.A.) and Tokuso Rebase (Tokuyama Soda Co., Ltd., Japan) for denture rebase. Twenty specimens of each denture base resin were made and polished. The color of specimens was measured by colorimeter (Model Tc-6FX, Tokyo Denshoku Co. Japan), and they were stored in coffee for three weeks and then color changes were measured. The obtained results were as follows : 1. The L*, a*, b* and the E*ab values of all denture base resins were changed after three weeks. 2. The amount of color change on L*, a*, b* and the E*ab value of each specimens showed different patterns. 3. The b* values of Triad Reline materials were changed more than the other materials. 4. The E*ab values of Triad Denture Base materials were changed more than the other materials.

This study evaluated the effects of four adhesive metal primers on the shear bond strength of a heat curing denture base resin(Lucitone 199) to cobalt-chromium alloy(Biosil-f). The adhesive metal primers were Cesead Opaque Primer, Metal Primer, MR Bond, and Super-Bond liquid. The metal surface primed or nonprimed was filled with the heat-curing methyl methacrylate resin. The specimens were stored in water at $37^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours and the alternately immersed in water bath at $5^{\circ}C\;and\;55^{\circ}C$ for up to 2,000 thermal cycles. Shear bond strengths were measured using UTM at a crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min. Failure surface were examined under magnifying glasses. All the primers examined improved the shear bond strength between denture base resin and cobalt-chromium alloy compared with nonprimed specimens before thermal cycling. The bond strength of Cesead Opaque Primer was greatest. And after 2,000 thermal cycles, the bond strengths between resin and cobalt-chromium alloy were decreased but the difference between thermal cycling 0 and 2,000 at Cesead Opaque primer and Metal Primer were not significant. This study indicated that Cesead Opaque Primer & Metal Primer is effective primers to obtain higher bond strength between heat cured denture base resin and cobalt-chromium alloy.
This study was designed to evaluate the effect of processing method and surface design on the transverse strength of repaired denture base resin. Three heat-cured denture base resins(Vertex, Lucitone, Lang), one cold-cured resin(Lang), and one light-cured resin(Dentacolor gingiva material) were used for repair purpose. The specimens for 3-point flexure test were fabricated by five processing methods such as self-curing, pressure pot, boiling water, processing, and light curing. Finally to evaluate the effect of surface designs for repaired resin, three surface designs(butt, bevel, inverse bevel) were tested. Within the limit of this study, following conclusions were drawn. 1. Lucitone denture base material showed highest flexural strength of $131.37{\pm}2.15MPa$, and there were significant differences in stength between Lucitone and other resins. 2. Between two different self curing methods, self curing repair resin, Lang, cured by pressure pot method showed highest flexural strength, $58.49{\pm}4.89MPa$. 3. Among the heat cured repair resins, maximum transverse strength value of $88.69{\pm}16.60MPa$ was recorded in Lucitone group cured by processing method. 4. Inverse bevel joint design showed significantly higher bond strength than butt joint group, Maximum bond strength was $59.36{\pm}1.33MPa$ in inverse bevel joint design group.

Polymers are the dominant material for fabrication of denture bases. However, resin base can't fufill the patients' satisfactions completely and solve the pronunciation problem and prevent the denture fracture. In spite of many advantages, metal denture bases do not widespread in clinical practice. The main reasons are the difficulties in fabrication and additional time and cost, inability to rebase such prostheses. The use of the metal base can be one of options in complete denture treatments. This study helps, through reveiwing previous reports and literature about the metal base, metal base to be useful in the clinical application by recommend the materials, indications and advantage/disadvantage of the metal base and introduce variable designs. The clinical application of the metal base have many advantages, but the dentists have to select cases carefully and apply designs according to patient's various conditions. In conclusion, the use of the metal base can't alternate treatment of inadequate conventional complete denture. Adequate complete denture is very important for the treatment of the metal base complete denture.

Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma jet(NTAPPJ) on surface properties and Streptococcus mutans disinfection of denture base resin. Methods : Self-cured denture base resin (Jet denture repair resin, Lang dental Mfg, co., USA) was used to make specimen($12mm{\times}2mm$). To observe surface change before and after plasma process, surface roughness and contact angle were measured. For sterilization experiments, the surfaces of specimens were treated with nitrogen and air NTAPPJ for 1 minute after S. mutans was inoculated on the material surfaces. Results : Before plasma process, surface roughness of denture base resin was $0.21{\mu}m{\pm}0.02{\mu}m$. After air and nitrogen NTAPPJ process, surface roughness was $0.19{\mu}m{\pm}0.03{\mu}m$ and $0.18{\mu}m{\pm}0.01{\mu}m$ respectively. There was no significant difference(p>0.05). Contact angle of control group without plasma process was $83.81^{\circ}{\pm}3.14^{\circ}$, while after plasma treatment, contact angles of air NTAPPJ and nitrogen NTAPPJ groups were $63.29^{\circ}{\pm}2.27^{\circ}$ and $46.68^{\circ}{\pm}5.82^{\circ}$ respectively. The result showed a significant decrease in contact angle after plasma process(p<0.05). Compared to the control group 6020.33(CFU/mL) without plasma process, CFU decreased significantly after air NTAPPJ 90.75(CFU/mL) and nitrogen NTAPPJ 80.25(CFU/mL) treatment(p<0.05). Conclusions : It was considered that NTAPPJ can be used for denture disinfection without changing surface properties of materials.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the displacement and the magnitude and the mode of distribution of the stresses in the lower overdenture, the mucous membrane, the abutment tooth and the mandibular supporting bone when various denture base materials, such as acrylic resin and 0.5mm metal base, and various denture base designs were subjected to different loading schemes. For this study, the two-dimensional finite element method was used. Mandibular arch models, with only canine remaining, were fabricated. In the first denture base design, a space, approximately 1mm thick, was prepared between the denture and the dome abutment. In the second denture base design, contact between the denture and the dome abutment was eliminated except the contact of the occlusal third of the abutment. In order to represent the same physiological condition as the fixed areas of the mandible under loading schemes, the eight nodes which lie at the mandibular angle region, the coronoid process and the mandibular condyle were assumed to be fixed. Each model was loaded with a magnitude of 10 kgs on the first molar region(P1) and 7 kgs on the central incisal region (P2) in a vertical direction. Then the force of 10 kgs was applied distributively from the first premolar to the second molar of each model in a vertical direction(P3). The results were as follows. : 1. When the testing vertical loads were given to the selected points of the overdenture, the overdenture showed the rotatory phenomenon, as well as sinking and the displacements of alveolar ridge, abutment and lower border of mandible under the metal base overdenture were less than those under the acrylic resin overdenture. 2. The maximum principal stresses(the maximum tensile stresses) being considered, high tensile stresses occured at the buccal shelf area, the posterior region of the ridge crest and the anterior border region of the mandibular ramus. 3. The minimum principal stresses(the maximum compressive stresses) being considered, high compressive stresses occured at the inferior and posterior border region of the mandible, the mandibular angle and the posterior border region of the mandibular ramus. 4. The vertical load on the central incisal region(P2) produced higher equivalent stress in the mandible than that on any other region(P1, P3) because of the long lever arm distance from the fixed points to the loading point. 5. Higher equivalent stresses were distributed throughout the metal base overdenture than the resin base overdenture under the same loading condition. 6. The case of occlusal third contact of the abutment to the denture produced higher equivalent stresses in the abutment, the mandibular area around the abutment and the overdenture than the case of a 1mm space between the denture and the abutment. 7. Without regard to overdenture base materials and designs, the amounts and distribution patterns of equivalent stresses under the same loading condition were similar in the mucous membrane.
When the complete denture is made, the record base for jaw relation is divided into temporary record base and permanent record base. However, The temporary record base include some disadvantages such as, the lackness of intimate contact between model and base, the lackness of retention during the jaw relation registration, When we obtained jaw relation the permanent record bases made from heat curing resin were utilized. We could get several advantages as follows : 1. The permanent record base provided intimate contact between the model and record base. 2. In fabricating occlusal rim on record base, the dimensional change of record base was little because the permanent record base was lesser influenced to thermal change of occlusal rim than the temporary record base. 3. At the stage of jaw relation, the retention of final denture could be early checked. 4. It could be able to get more accurate registration of jaw relation because all procedure were done on the same base during the jaw relation, artificial teeth arrangement, try-in, and final denture construction. 5. Although there was an inconvenience due to double curing procedure, the shrinkage rate in resin polimerization was relatively reduced so that more dimensional stability could be taken.
When exposed to different types of bacteria in the oral cavity, denture based resins are prone to bacteria attachment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the physical, biological, and antimicrobial properties of denture base resins coated with Peony extract (200, 400, and 600 ㎍/mL). Specifically, the surface properties (microhardness, contact angle, and color change of the coated specimens), cell cytotoxicity (measured using MTT assay), and antimicrobial activity (against S. mutans (Streptococcus mutans) and C. albicans (Candida albicans) using a growth inhibition assay) were evaluated. The polyphenol content was measured using ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectrometry. The experimental groups (specimens coated with Peony extract) and a control group (specimens coated without Peony extract) were statistically compared using a one-way analysis of variance and Tukey's post-hoc tests. No statistically significant differences in surface properties or cell cytotoxicity were observed, which demonstrated their biocompatibility. Conversely, a statistically significant difference in antimicrobial activity was observed between the experimental and control groups after 48 h. This confirms the antimicrobial activity of the denture base resin coated with Peony extract and demonstrates that it is a promising dental material for preventing stomatitis.
PURPOSE. This study evaluated the effect of chemical surface treatment using methyl formate-methyl acetate (MF-MA) solution on the tensile bond strength between acrylic denture teeth and auto-polymerized acrylic resin. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Seventy maxillary central incisor acrylic denture teeth for each of three different brands (Yamahachi New Ace; Major Dent; Cosmo HXL) were embedded with incisal edge downwards in auto-polymerized resin in polyethylene pipes and ground with silicone carbide paper on their ridge lap surfaces. The teeth of each brand were divided into seven groups (n=10): no surface treatment (control group), MF-MA solution at a ratio of 25:75 (v/v) for 15 seconds, 30 seconds, 60 seconds, 120 seconds, 180 seconds, and MMA for 180 seconds. Auto-polymerized acrylic resin (Unifast Trad) was applied to the ground surface and polymerized in a pressure cooker. A tensile strength test was performed with a universal testing machine. Statistical analysis of the results was performed using two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post-hoc Dunnett T3 test (${\alpha}$=.05). RESULTS. The surface treatment groups had significantly higher mean tensile bond strengths compared with the control group (P<.05) when compared within the same brand. Among the surface treatment groups of each brand, there were no significantly different tensile bond strengths between the MF-MA groups and the MMA 180 second group (P>.05), except for the Yamahachi New Ace MF-MA 180-second group (P<.05). CONCLUSION. 15-second MF-MA solution can be an alternative chemical surface treatment for repairing a denture base and rebonding acrylic denture teeth with auto-polymerized acrylic resin, for both conventional and cross-linked teeth.
