Statement of problem: The meaning of the beauty has a little different nature according to a time, culture, and nation. Purpose : This study was undertaken to estimate the geometric esthetic criteria for Korean woman by analysis of facial photograph in a smiling. Material and methods: The facial photographs of 678 Korean beautiful woman were collected from Miss Korea candidates(from 1971 to 2003 year). The dento-facial composition was measured and analyzed geometrically on computer monitor using $Adobe^{(R)}$$Photoshop^{(R)}$ 7.0. The statistical significance of the differences among the 4 decade groups was estimated by a $x^2$ test. Result : The Korean beautiful woman skewed the geometric characteristics such as the 'coincidence' (83.0%) between facial midline and dental midline, the 'normal' (96.9%) alignment and arrangement of upper anterior teeth. the 'average' (79.1%) position and 'upward' (53.4%) curvature of upper lip, the 'parallel' (85.7%) relationship between the lower lip and upper anterior incisal curvature, the 'touching' (49.9%) and 'not-touching' (44.8%) relationship between upper anterior incisor and towel lip, the 'first premolar' (54.1%) and 'second premolar' (38.9%) displayed in a smile, and the 'symmetry' (89.4%) of smile. There was statistical significance among the 4 decades in the respect of the upper lip curvature, the relationship between upper anterior incisor and lower lip, and the most posterior teeth displayed in a smile (p<0.05). Conclusion : The Korean beautiful woman showed similar results to the western esthetic criteria in the some respects and the tendency that the Korean woman had more active smiling recently.
The implanting of metal products is performed with numerous surface treatments because of toxicity and adhesion. Recently, the surface modification of metal products has been actively studied by coating the surface of the TiC or TiN film. We prepared a Ti(10%)Ag Target which may be used in dental oral material by, using the AIP(arc ion plating) system TiAgN coating layer that was deposited on Ti g.23. The purpose of this study was to establish the optimal bias voltage conditions of the coated TiAgN layer formed by the AIP process. The TiAgN coatings were prepared with different bias voltage parameters (0V to -500V) to investigate the effect of bias voltage on their mechanical and chemical properties. The SEM(scanning electron microscope), EDS(energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer), XRD(X-ray diffraction), micro-hardness, and potentiodynamic polarization were measured and the surface characteristics of the TiAgN coating layers were evaluated. The TiAgN coating layer had different mechanical characteristics based on the bias voltage, which also showed differences in thickness and composition.
Amalgam is one of the most commonly used dental restoration material because of its convenience, economic and physical properties. But microleakage in the tooth and amalgam interface has been its major problem, and many efforts have been made to overcome this shortcoming. The purpose of this study is to compare the effect of various liners on microleakage of amalgam restoration. Cavities were prepared on the buccal or lingual surface of ninety sound, extracted human premolars and six different liners (Tubulitec$^{(R)}$, Superbond D-liner II Plus$^{(R)}$, Superbond D-liner II Plus$^{(R)}$ with polymer, Scotchbond Multipurpose Plus$^{(R)}$, Copalite$^{(R)}$, No liner) were unapplied according to manufacturer's instructions and amalgam had been condensed immediately. The specimens were thermocycled by dipping in methylene blue dye at $5^{\circ}C$ and $55^{\circ}C$ for 1500 cycles. The amalgam-tooth interface was examined under stereobinocular microscope and the dye penetration was scored. The results were as follows : 1. The Tubulitec$^{(R)}$ group showed less microleakage than no liner or Copalite$^{(R)}$ group (p<0.01). 2. The Tubulitec$^{(R)}$, Superbond D-liner II Plus$^{(R)}$, Superbond D-liner II Plus$^{(R)}$ with polymer and Scotch bond Multipurpose Plus$^{(R)}$ groups were not significantly different. 3. The Copalite$^{(R)}$ and Scotchbond Multipurpose Plus$^{(R)}$ groups were not significantly different. Using the polystyrene liner and resin liners under admixed type of high-copper amalgam restoration significantly reduced microleakage in the tooth-amalgam interface. Further clinical studies on polystyrene liner are recommended.
Objectives: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the microleakage and penetration of fissure sealant in permanent molar teeth with fluorosis after pretreatment of the occlusal surface. Materials and Methods: A total of 120 third molars with mild dental fluorosis were randomly divided into 6 groups (n = 20). The tooth surfaces were sealed with an unfilled resin fissure sealant (FS) material. The experimental groups included: 1) phosphoric acid etching (AE) + FS (control); 2) AE + One-Step Plus (OS, Bisco) + FS; 3) bur + AE + FS; 4) bur + AE + OS + FS; 5) Er:YAG laser + AE + FS; and 6) Er:YAG laser + AE + OS + FS. After thermocycling, the teeth were immersed in 0.5% fuchsin and sectioned. Proportions of mircoleakage (PM) and unfilled area (PUA) were measured by digital microscope. Results: Overall, there were significant differences among all groups in the PM (p = 0.00). Group 3 showed the greatest PM, and was significantly different from groups 2 to 6 (p < 0.05). Group 6 showed the lowest PM. Pretreatment with Er:YAG with or without adhesive led to less PM than bur pretreatment. There were no significant differences among groups in PUA. Conclusions: Conventional acid etching provided a similar degree of occlusal seal in teeth with fluorosis compared to those pretreated with a bur or Er:YAG laser. Pretreatment of pits and fissures with Er:YAG in teeth with fluorosis may be an alternative method before fissure sealant application.

Purpose : The purpose of this study is to evaluate 7-year survival rate of implants placed without bone graft in posterior maxilla and compare the survival rate by the age and gender of patient, length and diameter of implant, region of implant placement, bicortical engagement of fixture, and connection of prosthesis. Material and methods : 78 patients (170 implants) who visited our institution from 2002 to 2007 and were followed up with panoramic view and medical records. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and Log Rank (Mantel-Cox) test were used. Results and conclusions : A 7-year cumulative survival rate for implants placed in posterior maxilla without sinus graft was 95.3%. The survival rate in men was 91.8%, significantly lower than 98.8% in woman.(p<0.05). However, the survival rate by the length of the implants did not show any significant differences.(p>0.05), while the wide platform implant resulted in 85% survival rate which was statistically lower than 98.5% in regular platform. The posterior maxillary implants engaged bicortically showed 97.6% of 7-year Survival rate, comparing 88.6% in not engaged implants. The survival rate of the single implant was 91.2%, while 98.5% in splinted prosthesis. Therefore, the bicortical engagement of the fixtures and splinted prosthesis may be recommended to get a long-term survival rate in posterior maxilla.
Purpose : Colonization of denture soft lining materials by Candida albicans can result in clinical problem, and deterioration of the materials. This study aimed to compare the retention and penetration of C. albicans into four denture soft lining materials commonly used. Materials and methods : Four denture soft lining materials (Coe-comfort$^{(R)}$, Coe-soft$^{(R)}$, GC soft liner$^{(R)}$, and Tissue conditioner$^{(R)}$) discs were prepared to glass slide and dental stone. Adherence of yeast to surfaces was monitored after one hour incubation of standardized washed cell suspension with test disc surfaces. Adherent cells stained with acridine orange were counted fluorescence microscopy. Penetration of yeast into materials bonded with acrylic resin after 1, 2, 3,4, 5, 6 and 7 days incubation was observed through sections stained using acridine orange and estimated to quantitative analysis using radioisotope. Results : There was statistical significance in cell numbers between smooth and rough surfaces(p<0.05). Higher numbers of cells were observed on rough surfaces. There was statistical significance in adherent cell numbers into smooth and rough surfaces individually(p<0.05). According to the increase of incubation periods, the cells penetrated into denture soft lining materials were shown to increase. The differences among all kinds of soft liner were statistically significant(p<0.05),and the largest number of cells penetrated into soft liners was observed in the Coe-soft$^{(R)}$. Conclusion : Initial adherence and penetration of yeast into denture soft lining materials has been influenced by surface roughness and chemical composition of them. The selection of appropriate materials and their fabrication may promote clinical performance.
Statement of problem. Osseointegration is important mechanism of dental implant but it is not easy to evaluate. Indirect measurement is non-invasive and clinically applicable but they need more study about correlation between indirect values and degree of osseointegration. Purpose. The aims of this study were to evaluate the coefficient of correlation between indirect measurement and direct measurement under different healing time, and assessment of effect of initial insertion torque to the implant stability. Material and Methods. 20 rabbits received 3 implants on each side of tibia. Three kinds of implants (machined surface implant, Sandblasted with Large grit and Acid etched implant, Resorbable Blast Media treated implant) were used. During the surgery implant insertion torque were measured with $Osseocare^{TM}$. After the 1, 4, 8, 12 weeks of healing time, animals were sacrificed and stability values (Implant Stability Quotient with $Osstell^{TM}$, removal torque with torque gauge) were measured. Results. The Bone quality of rabbit tibia was classified into 2 groups according to the insertion torque. Resonance frequency analysis (ISQ) and removal torque showed positive correlation until $4^{th}$ week (r=0.555, p=0.040). After $8^{th}$ week (r=0.011, p=0.970) the correlation became weak and it turned negative at $12^{th}$ week (r=-0.074, p=0.801). Insertion torque and ISQ showed changing correlation upon the healing time ($1^{st}$ week: r=0.301, p=0.033, $4^{th}$ week: r=-0.429, p=0.018, $8^{th}$ week: r=0.032, p=0.865, $12^{th}$ week: r=-0.398, p=0.029). Insertion torque and removal torque has positive correlation but it was not statistically significant ($1^{st}$ week: r=0.410, p=0.129, $4^{th}$ week: r=0.156, p=0.578, $8^{th}$ week: r=0.236, p=0.398, $12^{th}$ week: r=0.260, p=0.350). Conclusion. In this study, bone quality may affect the degree of osseointegration positively during healing time and correlation between ISQ and degree of osseointegration can be different according to the healing time and bone quality.
Statement of problem: A tenderness of the dentin after tapering of teeth for dental prosthesis is a common phenomenon. In practice, the alternative desensitizer may be used for minor pain after tapering of teeth. Purpose: In this study, the desensitizers were used to investigate the affect decreasing of shear bond strength according to the use of various cement, such as resin, Glass Ionomer, and phosphate cement. Material and method: Three different desensitizers were used on this study Compositions of two dentin desensitizers were HEMA(hydroxyethylmethacrylate) and glutaraldehyde. The other one is oxalic acid. Three dentin desensitizers applied on 12 degrees taper teeth. Then, Ni-Cr crowns were bonded with Resin cement, Zinc Phosphate (ZPC) cement and Glass Ionomer (GIC) cement. 120 human premolar teeth were used for specimens. The specimens were divided into four group as the reference and the empirical each with thirty specimens, then further divided into 12 group according to type of desensitizers and cement types. The shear bond strength were measured by Instron multi task instrument. Results: According to the result, the measured shear bond strength in order from the weakest to the strongest in general was ZPC, Resin, and GIC. And it is found that the application of desensitizers on dentin surface does not affect the shear bond strength. Conclusion: Dentin desensitizers that alleviate or prevent a dentin tenderness, usually contains HEMA and glutaraldehyde compounds. Such desensitizers are widely used in clinical studies. By applying the dentin desensitizer on the exposed dentin surface, the dentin capillary are blocked and periodontal membrane and cementum can not be drawn in pulp cavity. Since HEMA and glutaraldehyde may cause harm to the pulp cavity, an alternative desensitizer was developed.
Purpose: The aim of this review is to introduce a novel bone-graft material for hard-tissue regeneration based on the calcium phosphate glass(CPG). Materials and Methods: CPG was synthesized by melting and subsequent quenching process in the system of CaO-$CaF_2-P_2O_5$-MgO-ZnO having a much lower Ca/P ratio than that of conventional calcium phosphates such as HA or TCP. The biodegradability and bioactivity were performed. Effects on the proliferation, calcification and mineralization of osteoblast-like cells were examined in vitro. Influence in new bone and cementum formations was investigated in vivo using calvarial defects of Sprague-Dawley rats as well as 1-wall intrabony defect of beagle dogs. The application to the tissue-engineered macroporous scaffold and in vitro and in vivo tests was explored. Results: The extent of dissolution decreased with increasing Ca/P ratio. Exposure to either simulated body fluid or fetal bovine serum caused precipitation on the surface. The calcification and mineralization of osteoblast-like cells were enhanced by CPG. CPG promoted new bone and cementum formation in the calvarial defect of Sprague-Dawley rats after 8 weeks. The macroporous scaffolds can be fabricated with $500{\sim}800{\mu}m$ of pore size and a three-dimensionally interconnected open pore system. The stem cells were seeded continuously proliferated in CPG scaffold. Extracellular matrix and the osteocalcin were observed at the $2^{nd}$ days and $4^{th}$ week. A significant difference in new bone and cementum formations was observed in vivo (p<0.05). Conclusion: The novel calcium phosphate glass may play an integral role as potential biomaterial for regeneration of new bone and cementum.
