Intraoperative breakage of instruments can be occurred unexpectedly. To prevent damage of neighboring important anatomic structures and consequent complications, broken instruments should be removed as soon as possible. There have been several methods to remove broken instruments. One of them is the Carm fluoroscopy which is commonly used for locating metal foreign bodies. However, its application for removal of broken instruments in the oral and maxillofacial area is not common. In our experiences with the removal of two broken instruments in mandibular area, the newly developed dental mini C-arm was used to find broken instrument in soft tissue, because it gives real-time in situ information for the intraoperative location. We report two cases with broken instruments, a broken dental needle in the pterygomandibular space and a broken straight bur in the mandibular angle area. They were identified and could be removed safely using a dental mini C-arm.
Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the voluntary activity, sociality, and morality in the dental hygiene students. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 563 dental hygiene students in Jeonbuk from May 20 to June 20, 2013. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics of the subjects, volunteer activity, sociality, and morality. The instrument of sociality was adapted from Kim and reconstructed. Sociality was scored by Likert 5 scale and consisted of autonomy(4 questions), assiduousness(4 questions), sociability(4 questions), stability(4 questions), and leadership(4 questions). Cronbach alpha was 0.655 in the study. Morality instrument was adapted from Kim and Cho and reconstructed. The instrument was score by Likert 5 scale. Morality consisted of altruistic(8 questions) and social responsibility(8 questions). Cronbach alpha was 0.786 in the study. Data were analyzed using SPSS 12.0 program for descriptive analysis, frequency analysis, and t-test. P value was set at p>0.05. Results: Among the dental hygiene students, 50.4% participated in the volunteer activity. 22% of the students tended to help others. There was a significant difference between the volunteer activity, sociality, and morality. Conclusions: The volunteer activity experience and sociality had a positive effect on the participation in helping others. Sharing with help is the most important attitude toward the positive thinking and the right way of living. So the professors and students must try to share knowledge and volunteering mind in clinical practice for the patients.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate vital pulp tissue removal from different endodontic instrumentation systems from root canal apical third in vivo. Materials and Methods: Thirty mandibular molars were selected and randomly divided into 2 test groups and one control group. Inclusion criteria were a positive response to cold sensibility test, curvature angle between 10 and 20 degrees, and curvature radius lower than 10 mm. Root canals prepared with Hero 642 system (size 45/0.02) (n = 10) and Reciproc R40 (size 40/0.06) (n = 10) and control (n = 10) without instrumentation. Canals were irrigated only with saline solution during root canal preparation. The apical third was evaluated considering the touched/untouched perimeter and area to evaluate the efficacy of root canal wall debridement. Statistical analysis used t-test for comparisons. Results: Untouched root canal at cross-section perimeter, the Hero 642 system showed 41.44% ± 5.62% and Reciproc R40 58.67% ± 12.39% without contact with instruments. Regarding the untouched area, Hero 642 system showed 22.78% ± 6.42% and Reciproc R40 34.35% ± 8.52%. Neither instrument achieved complete cross-sectional root canal debridement. Hero 642 system rotary taper 0.02 instruments achieved significant greater wall contact perimeter and area compared to reciprocate the Reciproc R40 taper 0.06 instrument. Conclusions: Hero 642 achieved higher wall contact perimeter and area but, regardless of instrument size and taper, vital pulp during in vivo instrumentation is not entirely removed.
Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the influence of humor sense on job satisfaction and turnover intention in clinical dental hygienists. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 277 dental hygienists in Chungnam from May to June, 2014. The instrument for humor sense was adapted from Thorson and Powell instrument by Lee and 20 questions. Each question included humor making and preference for humor and scored by Likert 5 scale. Cronbach's alpha in the study was 0.869. Job satisfaction was adapted from Smith Job Description Index and included task requirement, collaborate support, manager support, promotion, and wages and score by Likert 5 scale. Cronbach's alpha in the study was 0.827. Turnover intention was developed by Lee and 5 questions was score by Likert 5 scale. Crobach's alpha was 0.712 in the study. Results: The average of humor sense was 3.33, average of job satisfaction was 3.20, and average of turnover intention was 3.05. The sense of humor had a positive effect on turnover intention. Conclusions: This result will provide the high productivity and high quality of life in clinical dental hygienists. Humor sense is the important factor that support the job satisfaction and decrease the turnover intention.
Objective: The aim of this study was to perform a comparative evaluation of the effectiveness of ultrasonic tips versus the Terauchi file retrieval kit (TFRK) for the removal of broken endodontic instruments. Materials and Methods: A total of 80 extracted human first mandibular molars with moderate root canal curvature were selected. Following access cavity preparation canal patency was established with a size 10/15 K-file in the mesiobuccal canals of all teeth. The teeth were divided into 2 groups of 40 teeth each: the P group (ProUltra tips) and the T group (TFRK). Each group was further subdivided into 2 smaller groups of 20 teeth each according to whether ProTaper F1 rotary instruments were fractured in either the coronal third (C constituting the PC and TC groups) or the middle third (M constituting the PM and TM groups). Instrument retrieval was performed using either ProUltra tips or the TFRK. Results: The overall success rate at removing the separated instrument was 90% in group P and 95% in group T (p > 0.05) The mean time for instrument removal was higher with the ultrasonic tips than with the TFRK (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Both systems are acceptable clinical tools for instrument retrieval but the loop device in the TFRK requires slightly more dexterity than is needed for the ProUltra tips.
The purpose of this study was to examine the degree of infection control implemented at dental offices and factors affecting it in an attempt to help promote the health of dental health care workers. The subjects in this study were 180 medical personnels who worked at dental offices in the region of South Jeolla Province. A self-administered survey was conducted from April 1 to May 30, 2008, and the collected data were analyzed. The findings of the study were as follows: 1. As for the implementation of infection control at the dental offices, what the health care workers investigated did the most was post-treatment hand washing(95.0), a constant separation of infectious wastes(94.4), wearing rubber gloves all the time during medical instrument cleansing(92.8) and pre-treatment hand washing(91.7). 2. In regard to the implementation of infection control at the dental offices, what the dental personnels did the least was drying their hands with air(5.0), wearing goggles in times of treatment(23.3), receiving regular education on infection control(26.7) and putting sterilizers to a performance test on a regular basis(43.9). 3. The dental health care workers were significantly different according to age in the management of contagious diseases(p=0.005). Their career made a significant difference to the management of contagious diseases(p=0.000) and instrument cleansing/sterilization(p=0.043). The service area made a significant difference to wearing and managing personal protective clothes (p=0.040) and waste management(p=0.040). 4. Concerning the relationship between the acquisition of dental hygienist certificate and the practice of infection control, whether the dental health care workers were certified or not made no significant difference to that. 5. As to the correlation among the factors affecting the prevention and management of contagious diseases, there was a positive correlation among hand washing(r=0.379), wearing and managing personal protective clothes(r=0.349), instrument cleansing/sterilization(r=0.323) and waste management(r=0.388). All the factors made a statistically significant difference to the prevention and management of contagious diseases(p<0.01).
Objectives: The purposes of this study is to examine the relationship between emotional labor and burnout among dental hygienists. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 247 dental hygienists from September 4 to October 9, 2014. The questionnaire consisted of emotional labor, job burnout, and job stress. Emotional labor included frequency of emotional expression, compliance with emotional regulation, emotional diversity, and emotional dissonance by the instrument pf Morris and Feldman. Job burnout was adopted from Maslach burnout inventory(MBI). Job stress was adpoted from instrument of Chang. Except 13 incomplete answers, 234 data were analyzed by AMOS 18.0 and SPSS 18.0 program. Results: The emotional labor has a significant positive relation to the job burnout. There was a statistical significance between emotional labor and job stress. Job stress had a positive relation to job burnout. Job stress had a mediating effect between emotional labor and job burnout. Emotional labor had a direct effect on the job burnout. Job stress also had a mediating effect on job burnout. Conclusions: It is necessary to improve working environment that can enhance emotional balance and to develop job stress management program.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to survey the recognition of college-preparatory students who interested and prevented themselves in oral health diseases for dental hygienist in Yeungnam South Korea. Methods : The subjects in this study were 328 students who was seriously worried for career and entrance into a school. The survey period was from August 16th 2011 to November 26th 2011, and the data was collected from the high school students in Yeungnam and the preparatory students who visited S college in Gyeongju. This study was conducted by using the self-reported questionnaire. Results : The result of this study are as follows. 87.2% of the subjects have recognized about the name of dental hygienist, 51.5% have distinguished dental hygienist in the clinic, and 67.4% have recognized about education of dental hygienist that was more than a college graduate. The received services from dental hygienist was scalling(15.6%), assistant of treatment(14.7%), tooth brushing instrument(11.5%), Reception & receipt(11.0%), and etc. The majority of the subjects have recognized that dental hygienist was the professional(4.82 points), the important role in oral health(4.88 points), and the intermediary between patients and dentists(4.60 points). And they were friendly(4.64 points), responsible(4.81 points), and worthwhile job(5.01 points). However their appellation has not been established yet(4.00 points), they was difficult to distinguish from nursing assistants(4.37 points), and their task did not differs from AN(4.53 points). Also they compared to other job was not stressful job(3.58 points). Conclusions : Refer to these results, those will be the basis for professional development and status establish of clinical dental hygienists and for the upright role as a professional medical personnel of dental hygiene students. In addition, those will help to patients in the future, and become an effective instrument to learn knowledge, skill, and service that needed to conduct business.
The purpose of this study was to provide the basic data needed to plan the effective teaching design of scaling education and to measure the changes in students' confidence in performing scaling according to the number of scaling practices. Scaling education is presented as a core basic hygiene competency of dental hygienists and evaluated as the practical competency of dental hygienists. This study selected 48 third-year students from the department of dental hygiene at S University in Asan, and analyzed data from completed participant surveys. The degree of "confidence in facing the subject in clinical practice," "confidence in applying hand instrument to the subject," and "confidence in applying ultrasonic instruments to the subject" was assessed on a five-point Likert scale. The difference in confidence was analyzed during five practice sessions. Each response was compared using frequency analysis, chi-square test, and repeated measurement ANOVA. Students who complained of a lack of confidence in the 14.6%, 25.0%, and 12.5%, respectively, in face-to-face practice, hand instruments, and ultrasonic instrument application responses. The more the practice was repeated, the more confident students were in all three categories, and the more statistically significant (p<0.001). As the number of scaling practice sessions increased, students' confidence in performing scaling also improved. In particular, the level of self-confidence was higher after the third practice session when compared to the first session. Therefore, it is necessary to design effective courses for teaching scaling practices so that at least three repetitive practice periods can be provided in clinical dental hygiene practices.
This study survey research of infection control, wastewater management, and instrument disinfection according to characteristic at Daegu, Gyeongbuk Province In 2012 and 2017, the same 114 dental clinics to identify the infection management behavior and prevent infection of dental medical institutions. Scored mean 3.37 points on 8 items of infection control, 95.5% in "records of the patient's medical history", 1.8% in "presence of a wastewater facility."
