  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of mothers education attainment on prevalence of dental caries among their preschool children. Methods: Data were obtained from the third 2006 Korea National Oral Health Survey. A total of 515 preschool children aged 2 to 7 years and their mothers were selected in this study. We used mother's education level as her socioeconomic position and controlled children's tooth brushing frequency, tooth brushing before bed, the frequency of eating snack, and the preventive dental visit. Whether children experienced dental caries or not and the number of decayed or filled or missing tooth surface they had were used as outcome variables. Results: The proportion of children affected with dental caries was 46.21%. The mother's education level affected children's caries significantly (p<0.05) and children whose mother attended less than high school had more possibility of having caries than children whose mother graduated from college or more (p<0.05). This effect was still significant and got larger(p<0.05), even after controlling children's dental health behavior. Conclusion: This study showed that mother's education level affected the prevalence of caries among their preschool children. In addition, this result indicated a need for more definite policy for children's dental health in lower socioeconomic class with general dental education.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the effects of the amount and duration of smoking on gingival symptoms in adolescents. Methods: We used the web-based survey data of youth health behaviors from 2016 conducted by the Korean Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The subjects of the study were 67,983 middle and high school students. Data analysis was performed using the SPSS Ver 20.0 program, and complex sample multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to analyze gingival symptoms according to short- or long-term smoking habits. Results: In subjects with short-term smoking habits, there was no significant difference in gingival symptoms according to the smoking amount. However, after adjusting for socioeconomic characteristics and oral health behaviors in subjects with long-term smoking habits, a heavy smoking amount (${\geq}0.52PY$) had a 1.25 times higher effect than a light smoking amount (<0.52 PY) on gingival symptoms. Long-term heavy smoking (${\geq}0.52PY$) and low daily tooth-brushing frequency in high school students were factors affecting gingival symptoms. Conclusions: When conducting a project on the oral health of adolescents, it is argued that specific investigations and measures should be set up regarding health behavior factors, such as the amount and duration of smoking among adolescents.

Methods : Between the 3,676 children's dental check-up data and the 2,934 survey of parents from 9 elementary schools in the the Gyeonggi Province, the exactly matching data of 2,358 pairs, children versus mothers, were analyzed during the period, 2009 May 4 to July 20, By using the PASW 18(SPSS-PC 18), Frequency analysis of the collected data, and cross-analysis, ANOVA, Bonferroni post-analysis was performed. Results : The findings of the study were as follows. 1. In children, the ratio(DMF rate)of the dental caries experience in permanent teeth, appeared higher for men than women. Divided by grade level, the ratio of caries experience in the permanent teeth(DMF rate) generally appear higher in older than young. Thus between the child's gender and grade level by the ratio of caries experience in the permanent teeth(DMF rate) showed the statistically significant differences (p<0.05). 2. Between the socioeconomic characteristics of mothers and the children's level of dental caries experiences, not showed the statistically significant difference.(p>0.05). 3. The significant difference showed between the dental caries levels of the children and the mother's oral health care behavior - a toothbrush replacement period, mother's broken teeth, mothers guidances of the brushing after snacks for children(p<0.05). Conclusions : The mother's oral health attitudes and behaviors can affect to their children's oral care habits. Therefore The mother themselves should have the right proper habit of oral health care, so that in oral health care mothers should be the model for their children. Institutionally more systematic and detailed oral health educational program in conjunction with the family is needed.

  • Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the relationship between fluorine concentration within finger nails and the level of dentifrice in dental hygiene students and non-health majoring students. Methods: A self-reported questionnaire was completed by seventy female college students living in Daegu and Gyeongbuk that are not supplied with fluoridation from May to June, 2014. Informed consent was approved by institutional review board (IRB). The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics of the subjects (11 items) and oral health behavior including number of toothbrushing, duration of toothbrushing, number of mouth rinsing, and amount of dentifrice. A dentist and a dental hygienist examined directly the subjects by the guideline of World Health Organization (WHO). The oral examination included decayed tooth, healthy tooth, and filled tooth. The nail samples were obtained from seventy female students. Results: Comparing the dental hygiene students and non-health majoring students, 62.5% of dental hygiene students used approximately 1300mg of dentifrice and 55.2% of non-health majoring students used 1800mg or more of dentifrice. The non-health majoring students used more dentifrice (p<0.01). The fluorine concentration within nails was $1.9905{\mu}l/g$ in dental hygiene students and $3.2149{\mu}l/g$ in non-health majoring students. The fluorine concentration within nails in the dental hygiene students was significantly lower(p<0.01). Conclusions: The accumulation of fluoride in human body is not fully caused by dentifrice. However, The accumulation may occur due to toothbrushing so that it is necessary to educate the students about the right use of the dentifrice.
