The radiopacity of six composite resins, three resin luting cements and ten filling materials were studied. The purpose was to obtain an indication of radiopacity value of different brands within each of these groups of materials and to show differences in radiopacities of filling materials and natural tooth structures. On radiographs, the optimal densities of standardized samples were determined by computer imaging system and radiopacity values of the materials were expressed in millimeter equivalent aluminum. Within the groups of materials studied, there was considerable variation in radiopacity. The composite resins of P-50, Z100 and Prisma AP.H displayed much higher radiopacities than aluminum. Panavia resin cement was shown to be similarly radiopaque to aluminum. Generally, the radiopacity of base and filling materials appeared to be higher than that of the enamel and dentin. If materials with substantial difference in radiopacity are used in combined applications for restorative treatment of teeth, lower radiopacity can interfere with the diagnosis and detection of gaps near the restoration.
Dental amalgam in the clinic practice of dentistry is one of the most important materials. Mercury, one of the component of this alloy, is emitted in the form of vapor after filling as long as 5 days Silver particles penetrate into the dentine deeply along the tubles underneath cavity floor. To determine the permeability of mercury in the teeth following experiments were performed. Class 5 cavities total 40 from 10 dogs were prepared on upper and lower canines and amalgam alloys which contain about 10uCi of radioactive mercury were inserted. The animals were sacrificed 7 days after the experiments and the teeth were decalcified, sectioned and autoradiographed by means of emulsion and stained by H & E. Following are the results obtained from this experiments.
1. Blackened silver grains were found along the dentinal tubules underneath the cavity floor. Beyond the border of dentine and pulp chamber grains were seen in odontoblastic layer (Fig. 1, 2, 3, 4)
2. Underneath the odontoblastic layer, the pulp tissue showed almost normal appearance except slight dilatation of blood vessel.
Objectives: This study evaluated the effects of adhesion variables such as the priming concepts of canal wall and the curing modes of adhesives on the sealing ability of a resin-based root canal filling system. Materials and Methods: Apical microleakage of the Resilon-RealSeal systems filled with 3 different combinations of adhesion variables was compared with the conventional gutta-percha filling using a dye penetration method. Experimental groups were SEDC, Resilon (Resilon Research LLC) filling with self-etch RealSeal (SybronEndo) primer and dual-cure RealSeal sealer; NELC, Resilon filling with no etching, Scotchbond Multi-Purpose (3M ESPE) primer application and light-curing adhesive; and TELC, Resilon filling with Scotchbond Multi-Purpose primer and adhesive used under total etch / wet bonding and lightcure protocols. GPCS, gutta-percha filling with conventional AH26 plus sealer, was the control group. Results: The median longitudinal dye penetration length of TELC was significantly shorter than those of GPCS and SEDC (Kruskal-Wallis test, p < 0.05). In the cross-sectional microleakage scores, TELC showed significant differences from other groups at 2 to 5 mm from the apical foramen (Kruskal-Wallis test, p < 0.05). Conclusions: When a resin-based root canal filling material was used, compared to the self-etching primer and the dual-cure sealer, the total etch/wet-bonding with primer and light-curing of adhesive showed improved apical sealing and was highly recommended.
Endodontic surgery is performed when conventional endodontic therapy fails or is contraindicated. In such cases, retrograde filling materials including amalgam, composite resin, and various cements have been used. Biocompatibilty and margin sealing ability of retrograde filling materials are important for the long term success of endodontic surgery. In vitro cell culture is frequently used as the method of measuring the biocompatibilty of dental materials. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the cytotoxicity of six kinds of retrograde filling materials including newly developed light curing glass ionomer cements. Each material was mixed according to. the manufacture's instruction and evaluated as : freshly mixed, 24-hour after mixing, and 168-hour after mixing respectively. The elution solution was extracted after 24-hour contact with materials using media. Cytotoxicity was evaluated by direct contact, or elution contact. Test results of radiochromium($^{51}Cr$) release, cell viability using tetrazolium dye (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl dimethyltetrazolium bromide(MTT) test and lactate dehydrogenase(LD) of damaged L929 cells were analyzed. In the $^{51}Cr$ release of direct contact, all experimental retrograde filling materials except amalgam and glass ionomer cement showed increased cytotoxicity compared to control. In the $^{51}Cr$ release of elution solution, the released $^{51}Cr$ was so minimal that it was impossible. to evlauate the cytotoxicity exactly. The elution solutions of glass ionomer cement and IRM showed marked cytotoxicity in MTT test. LD enzyme activity was highest in tests of direct contact with composite, light curing composite, and light curing glass ionomer cement and IRM. Amalgam revealed least cytotoxicity while IRM showed cytotoxicity using all three methods. Composite, light curing composite and light curing glass iomomer cement were cytotoxic in the tests of $^{51}Cr$ release and LD activity. Glass ionomer cement showed cytotoxic effect only in the MTT method. From these results it is suggested that the standardization and optimization of cytotoxicity testing, especially using elution solutions, should be strongly advised.
This experimental study was made to investigate the effect of the "Hi-Pol" composite resin on the human dental pulp. 38 cavities of healthy permanent teeth were divided into 5 groups which were used as experimental materials. Group 1: Zinc Oxide-Euginol paste was applied to the cavities as controls $\cdots\;\cdots8$ cases Group 2: "Hi-Pol"*filling with Dycal** base $\cdots\;\cdots9$ cases Group 3: "Hi-Pol" filling without Dycal base $\cdots\;\cdots9$ cases Groud 4: Adaptic*** filling with Dycal base $\cdots\;\cdots6$ cases Group 5: Adaptic filling without Dycal base $\cdots\;\cdots6$ cases The treated teeth were extracted after 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks and 4 weeks and processed for histological study. The results obtained from this experimental study were as follows; 1. The controls applied zinc oxide-eugenol showed the minimal pulp response and group 3 and group 5 showed the most severe pulp response. 2. In group 3 and group 5, the severity of pulp response increased in intensity according to the time elapsed. 3. In group 2 and group 4, the mild pulp response was found in earlier stage and the repairing process could be observed in later stage. * Boo-Pyung Co., Korea ** L. D. Background/Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of Nd:YAG irradiation on adherence of retrograde filling materials (mineral trioxide aggregate [MTA] and Super-EBA) by micro-computed tomography (CT) measurement and to observe the dentinal surface after irradiation by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Materials and methods: Forty retrofilling models using extracted human teeth were divided into four groups according to the material and method used: ProRoot MTA (MTA group), Super-EBA (EBA group), MTA with Nd:YAG laser irradiation (LMTA group), and Super-EBA with Nd:YAG laser irradiation (LEBA group). All specimens were stored in 100% humidity for 24 hours until micro-CT was performed. The gap volume of the tooth/material interface was measured using the CTAn program. In six samples, the laser-irradiated dentin surface was observed using SEM. Results: The mean percent difference in gap volume was not statistically significant between the Nd:YAG laser-irradiated groups and non-irradiated in both materials(P > 0.05). The gap volume in the MTA group was significantly lower than that in the EBA group (P < 0.05). Examination of the non-irradiated specimens by SEM showed patent dentinal tubules. In contrast, alterations in the texture of the dentin surface and obliteration of the dentinal tubules were evident in the Nd:YAG laser-irradiated specimens. Conclusion: In this study, changes in the dentinal surface after Nd:YAG irradiation did not affect adherence between the apical filling material and the dentin wall.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the level of urinary mercury and analyze which factors would affect urinary mercury concentration among dental hygienists in dental clinics. Methods: This study conducted by questionnaire and detection of urinary mercury concentration of 268 dental hygienists working in dental clinics from July to August of 2009. Data collected from two hundred and thirty-five dental hygienists were analyzed by the geometric mean (GM). Analytical results of urine samples with less than 0.3 g creatinine/L and greater than 3g creatinine/L were excluded from statistical analysis. Results: Urinary mercury concentration of 235 dental hygienists showed the geometric distribution. The arithmetic and geometric means of urinary mercury concentration were $0.996{\mu}g/g$ creatinine and $0.755{\mu}g/g$ creatinine, respectively. From multiple regression analysis, the number of amalgam filling, the consumption frequency of raw fish and the number of amalgam handling in current workplace was revealed as increasing factors of urinary mercury concentration. Conclusions: The level of urinary mercury in dental hygienists was higher than in general Korean population. The number of amalgam filling, the consumption frequency of raw fish and the number of amalgam handling in current workplace was revealed as increasing factors of urinary mercury concentration. Therefore using resin materials instead of amalgam in dental clinics is highly desirable.
The experimental study was made to investigate the effect of the "Heliosit" composite resin on the dental pulp. The 36 class V cavities were prepared on the healthy permanent teeth of 3 days, and were divided into 5 groups and filled with the experimental filling materials. Control group: Zinc Oxide-Eugenol cement filling Experimental groups: Group 1: Dentin Adhesit application & Heliosit filling with or without dycal base Group 2: Heliosit filling with or without dycal base Group 3: Durafill filling with dycal base Group 4: Hipol filling with dycal base Animals were sacrificed after 1 weeks, 2 weeks, and 4 weeks following operation. The teeth were decalcified, sectioned and stained with hematoxylin and eosin. The results obtained form this study were as follows: 1. All experimental group showed slight pulp response. 2. Dentin Adhesit group showed minimal pulp response in both dycal bases and no base cases. 3. In group 2, mild pulp response was found in early stage and repairing process was found as the time elapsed. In no base cases, healing process was delayed slightly. 4. There was little difference in the result among Heliosit group, Durafill group and Hipol group.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the marginal sealing ability of Hipol composite resin. Using freshly extracted human teeth and 2% acquous methylene blue, the marginal leakage of dye in restorative materials such as Hi-pol, Adaptic, Nuvasystem, Epolite and Amalgam was investigated at 37℃ and under temperature cycling between 4℃ and 60℃. The results were as follows; 1. All the filling materials revealed the penetration of dye between cavity walls and restorations. 2. Hi-pol and Adaptic showed more marginal leakage than other materials and the degree of dye penetration in Hi-pol was similar to that of Adaptic. 3. Nuva system showed the least marginal leakage at 37℃ and under temperature cycling between 4℃ and 60℃. 4. Under temperature cycling, all materials showed a slight increase in marginal leakage except Epolite, which showed the greastest change in leakage.
Treatment of immature permanent teeth with irreversibly damaged pulp has been challenging in dental practice because of the lack of apical constriction, thin dentinal walls, and short roots. This may lead to the extrusion of filling materials, and fracture of the root due to its more fragile feature during shaping of the root canal. Apexification with calcium hydroxide or MTA is one of the treatment options for these cases. Although favorable results of apexification have been reported, these treatment procedures do not guarantee the increase of root length and/or width even after a long term period. Thus, treated teeth are still prone to fractures. Recently, pulp revascularization has been proposed as an alternative treatment for immature teeth with necrotic pulp and periapical pathosis. Pulp revascularization allows the stimulation of the apical development and the root maturation. There have been many treatment protocols using various materials such as antibiotics and calcium hydroxide medicament. In this case report, literature review about pulp revascularization and two related cases are presented.
