Dilaceration is a tooth abnormaly occuring in the histo-morphodifferention stage resulting from disturbance between the uncalcified and already calcified portion that affects both the crown and root. The involved tooth is usually the maxillary central incisor and it also shows high prevalence of impaction. The cause of dilaceration can be either from the trauma of the primary tooth, ectopic development of the tooth germ or from cysts. And it is also found in some cases of Otodental syndrome, Hurler syndrome, Cleidocranial dysostosis. The purpose of this study is to show that periapical lesions caused by dental caries can be another factor in causing dilaceration.

In this experiments, the fracture loads were measured and analysed by using of Instron universal testing machine (Model 1132). With 80 upper and lower deciduous molars that were free of dental caries. Isthmus of teeth were prepared to 1/3 and 1/4 of intercuspal width, and internal line angles with round and sharp shape, and then amalgam restoration were performed. The results of this study were as follows; 1. Resistance to fracture loads were greater with isthmus of 1/3 intercuspal width than of 1/4 intercuspal width, especially, statistically significant difference on upper and lower second deciduous molars. 2. Resistance to fracture loads were greater with rounded internal line angle than sharp internal line angle. The above results were as follows, the fracture loads had greater resistance on isthmus of 1/3 intercuspal width, and rounded internal line angle, but normal physiological occlusal forces could permit isthmus of 1/4 intercuspal width and rounded internal line angle.
This experiment was performed to study the effect of capsaicin on the excitatory amino acids (EAAs) neurotransmitter in medullary dorsal horn and to clarify the relationship between substance P and excitatory amino acids. Horizontal slice of rat medullary dorsal horn was prepared and perfused with modified Krebs-Ringer solution in brain slice chamber. Release of EAAs was induced by veratrine and capsaicin were added to perfusion solution to observe the changes in EAA release. Capsaicin and ruthenium red, capsaicin antagonist, were also systemically injected with 50mg/kg in first day and 100mg/kg in second day for 2 days. Medulla oblongata containing the medullary dorsal horn was isolated, homogenized and centrifused. Spernatant was freeze-dried and EAA was determined by HPLC. Release of glutamate and aspartate was significantly increased by veratrine or capsaicin, but veratrine evoked release of EAAs was blocked by capsaicin in vitro, and injected ruthenium red did not have effect on the contents of EMs in vivo. Systemically injected capsaicin evoked the slight decrease in content of glutamate and aspartate in medullary dorsal horn and this effect of capsaicin was unaffected by ruthenium red.
이를 필름(Kodak Insight; IS, Kodak Co, USA)과 Digital Sensor(Kodak RVG 6000; Kodak Co, USA)에 XCP Instrument(Rinn Co, USA)를 사용하고, 전면에는 조직등가물질인 Acrylic Resin Block 20mm를 설치하였다.
Purpose : To determine the proper image compression method and ratio without image quality degradation in intraoral digital radiographic images, comparing the discrete cosine transform (DCT)-based JPEG with the wavelet-based JPEG 2000 algorithm. Materials and Methods : Thirty extracted sound teeth and thirty extracted teeth with occlusal caries were used for this study. Twenty plaster blocks were made with three teeth each. They were radiographically exposed using CDR sensors (Schick Inc., Long Island, USA). Digital images were compressed to JPEG format, using Adobe Photoshop v.7.0 and JPEG 2000 format using Jasper program with compression ratios of 5 : 1,9 : 1, 14 : 1,28 : 1 each. To evaluate the lesion detectability, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed by the three oral and maxillofacial radiologists. To evaluate the image quality, all the compressed images were assessed subjectively using 5 grades, in comparison to the original uncompressed images. Results: Compressed images up to compression ratio of 14 : 1 in JPEG and 28 : 1 in JPEG 2000 showed nearly the same the lesion detectability as the original images. In the subjective assessment of image quality, images up to compression ratio of 9 : 1 in JPEG and 14 : 1 in JPEG 2000 showed minute mean paired differences from the original Images. Conclusion : The results showed that the clinically acceptable compression ratios were up to 9 : 1 for JPEG and 14 : 1 for JPEG 2000. The wavelet-based JPEG 2000 is a better compression method, comparing to DCT-based JPEG for intraoral digital radiographic images.
Osteomyelitis is an exhaustive disease whose main feature is an inflammation of inner part of bone, bone marrow. In oral and maxillofacial area, we have maxillary and mandibular osteomyelitis and the latter is dominant because of its impaired blood supply. The main cause of osteomyelitis is a bacterial infection and the ways of infections are by periapical odontogenic infection, fracture, post-operative complication, and periodontal disease. The predominant etiologic factor is periapical odontogenic infection mostly caused by advanced dental caries. It is generally believed that periodontal disease could be a cause of osteomyelitis. But periodontal disease is usually confined to the alveolar bone area and not extends to the underlying bone marrow. Accordingly periodontal infection per se rarely cause produce oseomyelitis. Even though osteomyeltis could be occurred by periodontal disease, its virulence of infection is milder than periapical odontogenic infection. So it usually provokes sclerosing or hyperplastic osteomyelitis rather than suppurative type. We had a case of suppurative osteomyelitis caused by periodontal disease and treated it with periodontal and oral and maxillofacial surgical method.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the pulpal responses to the base materials such as zinc oxide eugenol cement, calcium hydroxide, zinc phosphate cement, polycarboxylate cement and glass ionomer cement. The 100 caries free dog teeth were devided into 2 groups by remaining dentin thickness (Group A: 0.4-0.6 mm, Group B: 0.8-1.0 mm) and each group were devided into 5 subgroups. The intervals of observation period are 3days, 1 week, 2 weeks, 4 weeks and 8 weeks respectively after experiment. The specimens were fixed with 10% formalin and decalcifed in 5% nitric acid. All specimens were stained with Hematoxylin-Eosin and examined histopathologically. The results were as follows. 1. In group A, atropy or hyperplasia in odontoblasts were seen in zinc oxide eugenol cement, calcium hydroxide and zinc phosphate cement. No changes in odontoblasts were seen in polycarboxylate cement and glass ionomer cement. 2. In group A, increase of predentin were seen in all experimental materials. 3. In group A, vascular congestion were seen in all experimental materials and inflammation were seen on 3 days in zinc oxide eugenol cement, 8 weeks in zinc phosphate cement and hemorrage were seen on 3 days in zinc phosphate cement. 4. In group B, changes of odontoblasts were not seen all experimental materials. 5. In group B, increase of predentin and vascular congestion were seen in all experimental materials but inflammation were not seen.
Polyphenon 60 refers to the mixture of catechins present in green tea. The aim of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial activities of polyphenon 60 against 4 strains of Streptococcus mutans and 2 strains of Streptococcus sorbrinus, which are the major causative bacteria of dental caries. The minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values of polyphenon 60 for S. mutans and S. sobrinus were determined and the effect of biofilm formation inhibition of that was evaluated. The MBC value of polyphenon 60 against the bacterial strains was 2.5 mg/ml except for one particular strain, S. mutans KCOM 1128 for which the value was 1.25 mg/ml. The results of biofilm formation inhibition assay revealed that polyphenon 60 inhibited biofilm formation more than 90% at a concentration of 2.5 mg/ml. It was apparent that polyphenon exhibited biofilm formation inhibition activity along with bactericidal effect against S. mutans and S. sobrinus. Therefore, it is proposed that polyphenon 60 as one of the components of bactericidal agents could be useful in developing oral hygiene products, toothpaste or gargling solution.

Patient with alveolar abscess due to dental caries with severe alveolar bone loss, severe tooth mobility, root resorption need extraction of tooth because it is impossible to carry out pulp treatment and restoration by using conventional method. Early loss of primary molar might cause masticatory interference, extrusion of opposing tooth, problem in maintaining space and interference on eruption of permanent tooth. Especially, early loss of primary second molar before the eruption of permanent first molar might cause space closure by mesially erupted permanent first molar and impaction of second premolar. In such a case, distal shoe space maintainer and removable space regaining appliance was the first choice of treatment. But, distal shoe space maintainer need precise adaptation and might cause chronic inflammation if the oral hygiene is poor. In a case using removable space regaining appliance, patient's cooperation is most important. If the distal root of primary second molar is comparably sound and alveolar abscess with alveolar bone loss is localized at mesial root, hemisection should be carried out for precise guide to eruption of the permanent first molar, restoration of masticatory fuction and solution to the discomfort of the patient
For an anti-plaque agent, two flavan-3-ols isolated from Theobroma cacao bean husk showed positive reactions with $H_2SO_4$-anisaldehyde solution, $FeCl_3$, and were identified as monomeric, dimeric flavan-3-ots in TLC. They were (-)-epicatechin and procyanidin B-2(epicatechin-(4$\beta$$\rightarrow$8)-epicatechin). The structures were established by spectroscopic and chemical methods. (-)-Epicatechin had moderate inhibitory activity on GTase at concentration of 1.0mM while procyanidin B-2 showed complete inhibition activity at the same concentration. The hydroxyl group of flavan-3-ol was supposed to be the essential element for inhibition on GTase.
