  • For asymmetric polyetherimide membranes having a dense layer gradient structure on the skin layer, the morphology change and pervaporation behaviors of water/isopropanol mixture through chemical modification of dense skin layer were investigated. The extent of the density was controlled by the evaporation, time, and when the evaporation time was increased from 0 min to 4 min, the permeation flux was decreased, the separation factor was increased. Also, the pervaporation behaviors of the polyetherimide membranes modified with sodium hydroxide solution, as the modification time of dense skin layer increased, the selectivity increased, and the permeation flux decreased. The morphology change identified by SEM shows that the density of dense skin layer tends to increase with increasing modification time, this result is consistent with above observations.

  • The development of notochordal cells of nucleus pulposus was studied with electron microscope in human fetuses ranging from 30 mm to 260 mm crown-rump length. At 30 mm fetus, primitive notochordal cells were large with central nucleus, few organelles, and their cytoplasm usually contained dense glycogen and fine filaments. Notochordal cells at all ages contained bundles of fine filaments of indeterminate nature. One unusual feature of fetal notochordal cells was the consistent presense of rough endoplasmic reticulum surrounding poorly developed mitochondria. At 50 mm fetus, notochordal cells formed dense masses with interdigitating cell membranes connected by a variety of cell to cell junctions. With increasing age, the cell connections became slender threaded cytoplamic extending from cell and enclosed large extracellular space. Chondrocyte-like cells appeared to be separated by large volumes of extracellular matrix. Viable notochordal and condrocyte-like cells existed in specimen from all age. The extracellular spaces were filled with fibrillar and granular material by 90 mm fetus. Necrotic cells were distinguished by loss of their membrane integrity, vacuolization of their organelles, and the presence of dense osmiophilic masses. In adult tissue, notochordal cells became rounded or irregular in shape and developed a pericellular matrix consisting of collagen fibrile, and dense particle. The structure of notochordal cells and their persistance in the nucleus pulposus after fetal life suggested that they may have a significant role in the formation and maintenance of the nucleus pulposus. The presence of Golgi complex and well-developed endoplasmic reticulum in chondrocyte-like cells suggested that they are capable of producing and maintaining the extracellular matrix.

  • Deploying small cells is a reliable and influential solution to handle the skyrocketing traffic increase in the cellular network, and the small cell technology is evolving to ultra-dense network (UDN). In this paper we propose a small cell on/off algorithm with a simple but essential framework composed of access point (AP), user equipment (UE), and small cell controller (SCC). We propose Device-Assisted Networking for Cellular grEening (DANCE) algorithms that save the energy consumption by tying to minimize the number of turned-on APs while maintaining the network throughput. In doing so, SCC firstly gathers the feedback messages from UEs and then makes a decision including a set of turned-on APs and user association. DANCE algorithm has several variations depending on the number of bits of the UE's feedback message (1 bit vs. N bit), and is divided into AP-first, UE-first, or Proximity ON according to the criteria of selecting the turned-on APs. We perform extensive simulations under the realistic UDN environment, and the results confirm that the proposed algorithms, compared to the baseline, can significantly enhance the energy efficiency, e.g., more than a factor of 10.

  • Acinous gland cells (A, B, C, D and E-type cells) and duct cell (G-type cell) are observed in acinus and in duct of salivary gland of Korean Slug respectively by electron microscope. The type-A gland cells are numerous and are packed with medium electron dense granules (diameter, $3{\mu}m$) in cytoplasm. The circular shaped nucleolus and evenly developed chromatins are observed in the nucleus of type-B cell, and cytoplasm includes medium electron dense granules (diameter, $2.5X3.7{\mu}m$). The type-C gland cell has a round nucleus, and thin elongated-shaped heterochromatins are evenly distributed in the nucleoplasm and many net shaped endoplasmic reticulums and oval serous granules of middle electron density (diameter, $3.5X5{\mu}m$) fill the cytoplasm. The type-D gland cell is the largest and the most numerous of the gland cells consisting the salivary gland and heterochromatins in nucleus are well developed in the nucleoplasm. Most of granules (diameter, $0.8X2.5{\mu}m$) in cytoplasm are round, and look dark for the high electron density, and cytoplasm is filled with net-shaped endoplasmic reticulums. The type-E gland cells are rarely existent around the salivary gland, and the granules of those cells are irregular in shape and size and are vacuolized in cytoplasm. Intralobular salivary duct is composed of the high electron dense squamus endotheliums, while the other interlobular salivary duct is filled with irregular columnar epitheliums. The interlobular duct cell contains the high electron dense granules (size, $0.3{\sim}1.5{\mu}m$) in cytoplasm and those granules are secreted into cilia of salivary lumen.

  • Accident likelihood is growing due to a correlation for gas and electricity installed in the area of dense energy consumption like traditional market and underground shopping center. In order to prevent and respond accident risks related to gas and electricity in this area, it should be monitored and predicted for factors of gas leak or electricity by developing safety management system. This study is about accident prediction model development considering fire risk factor related to gas accident. The temperature variation characteristic near a gas burner was analyzed. Also, accident prediction algorithm and related module were developed to prevent fire in the area of dense energy consumption.

  • Recently dense wireless local area networks (WLANs) emerge as the number of WLAN cells and stations increases. In such dense WLAN environment, this paper proposes a new distributed medium access control (MAC) protocol. The proposed MAC protocol extends the previous CSMA with collision resolution (CSMA/CR) that uses a single collision detection (CD) phase and employs multiple CD phases to resolve more collisions. It checks the collision detection in each CD phase and stops the CD phase if consecutive non-detected CD phases occur more than the threshold. Therefore, the proposed protocol can control the number of CD phases adaptively according to the number of accessing stations and increase the probability of collision resolution while decreasing the packet overhead. The simulation results show that the proposed adaptive CSMA/CR protocol employs a variable number of CD phases according to the number of stations and achieves a greater throughput than the previous CSMA/CR protocol using the fixed number of CD phases.

  • We use dense redshift surveys of nine galaxy clusters at z ~ 0.2 to compare the galaxy distribution in each system with the projected matter distribution from weak lensing. By combining 2087 new MMT/Hectospec redshifts and the data in the literature, we construct spectroscopic samples within the region of weak-lensing maps of high (70-89%) and uniform completeness. With these dense redshift surveys, we construct galaxy number density maps using several galaxy subsamples. The shape of the main cluster concentration in the weak-lensing maps is similar to the global morphology of the number density maps based on cluster members alone, mainly dominated by red members. We cross correlate the galaxy number density maps with the weak-lensing maps. The cross correlation signal when we include foreground and background galaxies at 0.5zcl < z < 2 zcl is 10 - 23% larger than for cluster members alone at the cluster virial radius. The excess can be as high as 30% depending on the cluster. Cross correlating the galaxy number density and weak-lensing maps suggests that superimposed structures close to the cluster in redshift space contribute more significantly to the excess cross correlation signal than unrelated large-scale structure along the line of sight. Interestingly, the weak-lensing mass profiles are not well constrained for the clusters with the largest cross correlation signal excesses (>20% for A383, A689 and A750). The fractional excess in the cross correlation signal including foreground and background structures could be a useful proxy for assessing the reliability of weak-lensing cluster mass estimates.

  • How dense cores and filaments in molecular clouds form is one of key questions in star formation. To challenge this issue we started to make a systematic mapping survey of nearby molecular clouds in various environments with TRAO 14m telescope equipped with 16 beam array, in high ($N_2H^+$, $HCO^+$ 1-0) and low ($C^{18}O$, $^{13}CO$ 1-0) density tracers (TRAO Multi-beam Legacy Survey of Nearby Filamentary Molecular Clouds, PI: C. W. Lee). We pursue to dynamically and chemically understand how filaments, dense cores, and stars form under different environments. We have performed On-The-Fly (OTF) mapping observations toward L1251, southern part of Perseus molecular cloud, and Serpens main molecular cloud from January to May, 2016. In total, ~3.5 square degree area map of $^{13}CO$ and $C^{18}O$ was simultaneously obtained with S/N of >10 in a velocity resolution of ~0.2 km/s. Dense core regions of ~1.7 square degree area where $C^{18}O$ 1-0 line is strongly detected were also mapped in $N_2H^+$ 1-0 and $HCO^+$ 1-0. The L1251 and Perseus MC are known to be low- to intermediate-mass star-forming clouds, while the Serpens MC is an active low-mass star-forming cloud. The observed molecular filaments will help to understand how the filaments, cores and eventually stars form in a low- and/or intermediate-mass star-forming environment. In this talk, I'll give a brief report on the observation and show preliminary results of Perseus MC.

  • In order to evaluate the effect of platelet-derived growth factor(PDGF-BB) and guided tissue regeneration(GTR) technique on the regeneration of destructed periodontal tissue, intentional through-and-through furcation defects(4mm in height) were made on both mandibular 2nd and 4th premolars of 8 adult male dogs(30-40lb). Experimental group 1 was composed of the premolars that were treated by only topical application of PDGF-BB with 0.05M acetic acid without any barrier membrane. Experimental group 2 was composed of the premolars that were treated by GTR with expanded polytetrafluoroethylene membrane(ePTFE : Gore-tex periodontal material, USA). Experimental group 3 was composed of the premolars that were treated by GTR with ePTFE after topical application of PDGFBE. Control group was composed of the premolars that were treated by coronally positioned flap operation only without use of PDGF-BB and ePTFE membrane. All ePTFE membranes were carefully removed 4 weeks after regenerative surgery, and all experimental animals were sacrificed 8 weeks after regenerative surgery. The light microscopic findings were as follows ; (1) In experimental group 1, rapid new bone formation along the-root surface with multiple ankylosis and root resorption by multinucleated giant cells, and dense connective tissue in the central portion of the furcation defects were observed. (2) In experimental group 2, it was observed that the furcation defects were filled with newly formed bone, Sharpey's fibers were embedded into new cementum on root dentin of furcation fornix area, but the central portion and the area under furcation fornix were still filled with dense connective tissue. (3) In experimental group 3, the furcation defects were regenerated with newly formed dense bone and regular periodontal ligament with Sharpey's fibers embedded into newly formed cementum and bone underneath fornix area. (4) In control group, unoccupied space, apical migration of epithelium, dense infiltration of inflammatory cells in subepithelial connective tissue in relation to heavy plaque accumulation, and root resorption by inflammatory reaction were shown, but any new cementum formation on resorbed dentin surface could not be observed. The present study demonstrated that the combined therapy of PDGF-BB and GTR could enhance the regeneration of destructed periodontal tissue.

  • A new MAC protocol, MT-MAC(Multi-Tier Medium Access Control) by name, is proposed for dense sensor networks. Depending on the density of nodes in a virtual cluster, the cluster header performs the splitting to several tiers in nodes of virtual cluster. MT-MAC split the tiers to use modfied-SYNC message after receiving the beacon message from the cluster header. Because only the sensor nodes in the same tier communicate each other, less power is consumed and longer network life time is guaranteed. By a simulation method with NS-2, we evaluated our protocol. In dense nodes environments, MT-MAC protocol shows better results than S-MAC in terms of packet delivery rates throughput and energy consumption.
