  • Demagnetization for a tube sample which was made of a galvanized steel sheet was performed by applying a magnetic field with a decrement to remove the remanent magnetization of the material. An orthogonal fluxgate magnetic field sensor was used to measure a magnetic field created from a ferromagnetic material. To evaluate the remanent magnetization, the measured magnetic fields were separated into two magnetic field components by the remnant magnetization and the induced one. The horizontal and the vertical bias fields should be controlled separately during demagnetization to remove the horizontal and the vertical components of the remanent magnetization of the tube sample.

  • For the discussion of palaeogeomagnetic field direction and the movement and rotation of geotectonic blocks it is prerequisite to eliminate the secondary remanent magnetization component out of the NRM vector of given rock samples. Among various techniques alternating field and thermal demagnetization methods are most easily applicable and most widely used ones. Physical principle underlying these methods is the concept of relaxation time: Either with an action of external magnetic field or with an elevated temperature relaxation time of magnetic minerals can be drastically shortened. It has been furthermore shown experimentally that the secondary remanent magnetization can be more easily demagnetized than the primary remanent magnetization. Through careful stepwise demagnetization it should also be possible to discriminate the kind of various remanent magnetizations. In addition to the introduction to the underlying physical principles and experimental results of the alternating field and thermal demagnetization this paper gives various practical tips in earring out the demagnetization experiments. Each alternating field and thermal demagnetization instrumentation which is easily adaptable to domestic palaeomagnetic laboratories is also introduced. This paper provides a compact and practical introduction to the methods in palaeomagnetism and would be of interest to present workers and to those who want to embark on research in this field.

  • A permanent vertical magnetization should be obtained to counteract induced vertical magnetization due to the earth's background field during the Flash D demagnetization process. A vertical susceptibility is needed to calculate a extra-permanent magnetization, which is needed to control the permanent vertical magnetization in stage 2 of Flash D demagnetization and added to the final vertical permanent magnetization. Two susceptibilities were found in this paper. One is obtained from the extra-magnetization. The other is obtained by magnetic field measurement from the scaled physical vessel when the vessel is excited by vertical magnetic field. The initial susceptibility by the extra-magnetization was 0.101~0.109 and the one from the measured magnetic field was 0.122. Two susceptibilities have a good agreement each other. From this paper, it is found that the susceptibility is able to appllied to calculate the extr-magnetization.

  • This paper presents a design strategy of SPOKE type BLDC motors considering an irreversible demagnetization of a permanent magnet (PM). So the irreversible demagnetization characteristic of the motor is analyzed by rotor structure. The instantaneous currents in either starting or lock rotor condition, which are calculated from the current dynamic analysis, are applied to the analysis of the irreversible demagnetization field by FEM. In irreversible demagnetization analysis by FEM, the variation of residual flux density in PM is analyzed using the non-linearity of magnetic core on B-H plan. The analysis results are compared to several rotor structures and used for optimize the rotor structure.

  • Recently, electric vehicles have got significant attention because it is more eco-friendly and efficient than internal combustion engine vehicles. Instead of an internal combustion engine, the electric vehicle has a motor for propulsion. The permanent magnet synchronous motor which has permanent magnet instead of field winding in the rotor has especially higher efficiency and power density than other types of motor. When the irreversible demagnetization is occurred, drivers are exposed to high risk of accident by the fault operation of motor. Therefore, the irreversible demagnetization of permanent magnet should be detected to reduce the risk of accident. In this study, the demagnetization diagnosis method based on the result of locked rotor test is proposed. Based on short measurement time, the proposed diagnosis method aims to detect the demagnetization fault when an electric vehicle is at a complete standstill. The proposed method is verified through the finite element analysis.

  • This paper studied on the influence of naval vessel shape on vertical magnetic field after the vessel was demagnetized. The triangular shape, the rectangular shape and circular shape were adaped from vessel's structual drawings. Magneto-static FEM analysis was performed to obtain the iduced magnetic field due to earth magnetic field for those shapes. During demagnetization process, magnetic field of residual magnetization was observed. The holizontal and vertical magnetic field were calculated depending on vertical bias magnetic field through magnetc component seperation. To demagnetize naval vessel ship, demagnetizing coils shoud be wound more finely in the vow and stern of the ship than it should be in the mid-part of the ship.

  • Adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator (ADR) for hydrogen re-liquefaction operating between 24 K and 20 K has been designed. $Dy_{0.9}Gd_{0.1}Ni_2$, whose Curie temperature is 24 K, is selected as a magnetic refrigerant. The magnetic refrigerant powder is sintered with oxygen-free high purity copper (OFHC) powder to enhance its effective thermal conductivity as well as to achieve relatively high frequency. A perforated plate heat exchanger (PPHE) operated with forced convection is utilized as a heat switch. The forced convection heat switch is expected to have fast response relative to a conventional gas-gap heat switch. A conduction-cooled high Tc superconducting (HTS) magnet is employed to apply external magnetic field variation on a magnetic refrigerant. $2^{nd}$ generation GdBCO coated conductor HTS tape with Kapton$^{(R)}$ insulation (SUNAM Inc.) will be utilized for the HTS magnet. The magnetization and demagnetization processes are to be achieved by the AC operation of the HTS magnet. The designed magnetic field and target ramp rate of the HTS magnet are over 4 T with 180 A and 0.4 T/s, respectively. AC loss distribution on HTS magnet is theoretically estimated.

  • In this study, we investigated whether the anhysteretic demagnetization process would be applicable to remove a complicated magnetization of a steel tube as a part of the experimental earlier study for a deperming of naval vessel. The magnetic tube used in this study was a 10cm-long and 1cm-diameter steel tube, and magnetized with a E-shape ferrite core to form a nonuniform magnetization in it. In the anhysteretic demagnetization process, a dc magnetic field applied along the longitudinal direction of the tube decreased from ${\pm}$3kA/m to zero-field with the step of ${\pm}$300A/m. At the same time, an ac bias magnetic field with the frequency of 60Hz and the field intensity of 300A/m was excited along the circumstantial direction of the tube. It was found that the anhysteretic process was useful to demagnetize a small-object like a steel tube from the experimental results showing the residual magnetization reduced over 90%.

  • Levitation force of a new magnetic levitation system using a super-conducting bulk magnet(SBM) and a permanent magnet(PM) was numerically calculated. The non-linear J-E relation of a SBM was modeled using a critical state model and iteration method, and demagnetization of a PM was considered using a demagnetization curve of a real PM. The maximum limitation of levitation force was found according to increasing the trapped field in a SBM. Finite element method was used for numerical calculation.

  • This work intends to study the machine dynamics in the state-space approah and to formulate the operating characteristics of a namplidyne generator, with balanced control field winding and an auxiliary feedback winding for compensating purpose. In the derivation of the dynamic equation, investigations on the demagnetization effects are accentuated, based on the magnetic interlinks between windings of the machine. From the machine dynamic relation obtained, a state-variable representation of the machine dynamics is approached in the first part of this work.
