Deicing Performance with Deicer Types (제설제 종류에 따른 제설성능 평가)

  • In this study, calcium chloride($CaCl_2$), sodium chloride (NaCl), organic acids-containing deicer(NS 40, NS 100), mixed deicier($NaCl\;70\%\;+\;CaCl_{2}\;30\%,\;NS\;40\;70\%\;+\;CaCl_{2}\;30\%,\;NaCl\;70\%\;+\;NS\;40\;30\%,\;NS\;40\;70\%\;+\;NaCl\;30\%$) is investigated based on the laboratory test for deicing performance. Test items for deicing performance were ice melting and ice penetration, freezing point depressions and eutectic points, pH, thermal properties for selected deicing chemicals. As a test results, in case of the use chloride-containing deicier in area that concrete structures has subjected to freez-thaw reaction in winter season, it showed desirable method that use deicing chemicals mixed with optimum ratio rather than use one deicing chemicals when is consider to deicing performance and effects, corrosion of steel materials, freez-thaw resistance of concrete. When use various deicing chemicals mixed, NS40($70\%$)+Calcium chloride($30\%$) showed the best effective method.

As a test results, in case of the use chloride-containing deicier in area that concrete structures has subjected to freez-thaw reaction in winter season, it showed that mixed deicing chemicals with optimum ratio has desirable method than use one deicing chemicals when is consider to deicing performance and effects, corrosion of steel materials, and freez-thaw resistance of concrete. When use various deicing chemicals mixed, NS40(70%)+calcium chloride(30%) showed the best effective method.

  • OBJECTIVES : The objective of this study is to estimate the appropriate storage required for deicing materials in Gangwon-do for successful snow removal operations during the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games. The final estimates of the deicing chemicals can be used by public agencies to aid decision making. METHODS : First, the database that exists in the road snow-removal management system (RSMS) of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport, South Korea was used to determine historical characteristics of snow removal experiences in Gangwon-do. The database includes historical information, including regional and road weather data and number of snow-removal works. Second, both the maximum and the actual amount of storages used for deicing materials in the past three years were analyzed. Lastly, the final estimates of the deicing materials were evaluated using an additional equation. It considers frequency of salt spray application, total administrative road length estimated by road agencies, and number of days required for snow removal works in Gangwon-do. Consequently, the results show that significant differences were not observed between the final estimates and the maximum amount used during the past three years. RESULTS : The final estimates of the deicing materials are almost similar to the maximum amount used during the past three years in Gangwon-do. CONCLUSIONS : The study shows that the estimates of deicing chemicals can be useful when decision making is required for the snow-removal policy.

  • Use of deicing chemicals has been and will continue to be a major part of highway snow and ice control methods. Chloride-containing chemicals such as calcium chloride or rock salt are main deicers for the road. Extensive use of chloride deicers is, however, not only the source of substantial cost penalties due to their corrosive action and ability to deterioration roadway surface materials but also the source of environmental damages. Finding the deicing chloride agents impacts on the environment and develop the minimizing strategies, we evaluated that chloride deicing agents influence on highway roadside soil and establish the optimun strategies.

Use of deicing chemicals has been and will continue to be a major part of highway snow and ice control methods. Chloride-containing chemicals such as calcium chloride or rock salt are main deicers for the road. Extensive use of chloride deicers is, however, the source of substantial cost penalties due to their corrosive action and acceleration to deterioration concrete structures. Deterioration due to de-icer salt occurs in practice in concrete pavement, dike, barrier and similar structure. This paper reports the results of effect of de-icer salt on durability of concrete structure in winter. To protect concrete structure from damage by de-icer salt in winter, the exposure test was performed using three methods such as increase in design strength upto 32MPa application of granulated blast furnace slag powder, and concrete sealer. Of these, the method of increase in design strength upto 32MPa showed better durability for deterioration by de-icer salt.

  • Skid Resistance is a index to represent the friction between tire and road surface, which influences driving safety. Skid resistance varies with the conditions of tire, abrasion of road surface, vehicle speed, drying, wet and freezing condition of road surfaces. Especially, freezing occurs when temperature drops below $0^{\circ}C$ followed by snow or rain causes decrease of skid resistance. To recover the decreased skid resistance deicing work is applied. As a results of deicing works, freezing condition is changed into wet condition. However the wet road surfaces containing the remaining deicings agents may not show the skid resistance of normal wet condition. In this study, skid resistances in the condition of freezing, deicing process and deicing agents remained after snow-removal are evaluated. The test results, skid resistance recover quickly when Pre-wetted salt spreading and NaCl was used as deicing method. Skid resistance of Deicing agents remained on the road surface showed that concrete is higher than asphalt. superior effect. Recovery rate of skid resistance by comparison wet condition is 54~80%.
