The Crab nebula is widely used as a polarization angle calibrator for single-dish radio observations because of its brightness, high degree of linear polarization, and well-known polarization angle over a wide frequency range. However, the Crab nebula cannot be directly used as a polarization angle calibrator for single-dish observations with the Korean VLBI Network (KVN), because the beam size of the telescopes is smaller than the size of the nebula. To determine the polarization angle of the Crab nebula as seen by KVN, we use 3C 286, a compact polarized extragalactic radio source whose polarization angle is well-known, as a reference target. We observed both the Crab nebula and 3C 286 with the KVN from 2017 to 2021 and find that the polarization angles at the total intensity peak of the Crab nebula (equatorial coordinates (J2000) R.A. = 05h34m32.3804s and Dec = 22°00'44.0982'') are 154.2° ± 0.3°, 151.0° ± 0.2°, 150.0° ± 1.0°, and 151.3° ± 1.1° at 22, 43, 86, and 94 GHz, respectively. We also find that the polarization angles at the pulsar position (RA = 05h34m31.971s and Dec = 22°00'52.06'') are 154.4° ±0.4°, 150.7° ±0.4°, and 149.0° ± 1.0° for the KVN at 22, 43, and 86 GHz. At 129 GHz, we suggest to use the values 149.0° ± 1.6° at the total intensity peak and 150.2° ± 2.0° at the pulsar position obtained with the Institute for Radio Astronomy in the Millimeter Range (IRAM) 30-meter Telescope. Based on our study, both positions within the Crab nebula can be used as polarization angle calibrators for the KVN single-dish observations.
Turbulent motions perturb magnetic field lines and produce magnetic fluctuations. The perturbations leave imprints of turbulence statistics on magnetic field. Observation of synchrotron radiation is one of the easiest ways to study turbulent magnetic field. First, we obtained the spatial spectrum of synchrotron polarization so that shows how the spectrum is affected by Faraday rotation and how to recover the statistics of underlying turbulence magnetic field. Since polarized synchrotron intensity arising from magnetized turbulence are anisotropic along the direction of mean magnetic field. Secondly, we studied quadrupole ratio to quantitatively describe the degree of anisotropy introduced by magnetic field at multi-wavelengths. This work demonstrated that the spectrum and quadrupole ratio of synchrotron polarization can be very informative tools to get detailed information about the statistical properties of MHD turbulence from radio observations of diffuse synchrotron polarization.

Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) with bright radio jets offer the opportunity to study the structure of and physical conditions in relativistic outflows. For such studies, multi-frequency polarimetric very long baseline interferometric (VLBI) observations are important as they directly probe particle densities, magnetic field geometries, and several other parameters. We present results from first-epoch data obtained by the Korean VLBI Network (KVN) within the frame of the Plasma Physics of Active Galactic Nuclei (PAGaN) project. We observed seven radio-bright nearby AGN at frequencies of 22, 43, 86, and 129 GHz in dual polarization mode. Our observations constrain apparent brightness temperatures of jet components and radio cores in our sample to > 108.01 K and > 109.86 K, respectively. Degrees of linear polarization mL are relatively low overall: less than 10%. This indicates suppression of polarization by strong turbulence in the jets. We found an exceptionally high degree of polarization in a jet component of BL Lac at 43 GHz, with mL ~ 40%. Assuming a transverse shock front propagating downstream along the jet, the shock front being almost parallel to the line of sight can explain the high degree of polarization.

We present the result of near-infrared (near-IR) imaging polarimetry of star-forming regions in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We compiled near-IR photometric and polarimetric data of N159/160 regions. The photometric and polarimetric data were simultaneously obtained in J, H, and Ks bands using SIRPOL, an imaging polarimeter of the InfraRed Survey Facility (IRSF), in 2007 February. We measured Stokes parameters of point-like sources to derive their degree of polarization and polarization position angles. In this poster, we present polarization properties of these star-forming regions. We also discuss the polarization structure in these regions compared with mid-infrared dust emission structure from the Spitzer SAGE survey.

The contents of this paper include a non-destructive technique for evaluating the degradation of the boiler superheater tube in a fossil power plant through an electrochemical polarization test. Correlation between Ip of polarization parameter and SP-DBTT for the superheater tubes in long-term use was obtained. 1.0Cr-0.5Mo steel was degraded by softening, and the degree of degradation was dependent upon carbides with Cr and Mo elements. Since brittle fracture at low temperature and ductile fracture mode at high temperature were shown, similarity between standard Charpy and small punch tests could be found. In addition, SP-DBTT showing the degree of degradation was higher, as the time-in use of the materials got longer. Electrolyte including picric acid of 1.3 g in distilled water of 100ml at 25.deg. C temperature and sodium tridecylbenzene sulfonate with 1g could be applied to evaluate the degradation of 1.0Cr-0.5Mo steel by means of the electrochemical polarization test. Ip and Ipa values measured through the electrochemical test are the appropriate parameters for representing the degradation of the superheater tube(1.0Cr-0.5Mo steel) for the fossil power plant. It is poassible to evaluate the degradation of materials with different time histories electrochemically, by Ip value only, at field test.
About 10 percent of quasars are known to exhibit deep broad absorption troughs blueward of prominent permitted emission lines, which are usually attributed to the existence of outflows slightly above he accretion disk around the supermassive black hole. Typical widths up to 0.2c of these absorption roughs indicate the velocity scales in which special relativistic effects may not be negligible. Under he assumption of the ubiquity of the broad absorption line region in quasars, the broad emission line flux will exhibit Thomson scattered components from these fast outflows. In this paper, we provide our Monte Carlo calculation of linear polarization of singly Thomson scattered line radiation with the careful considerations of special relativistic effects. The scattering region is approximated by a collection of rings that are moving outward with speeds ${\upsilon}=c{\beta}<0.2c$ near the equatorial plane, and the scattered line photons are collected according to its direction and wavelength in the observer's rest frame. We find that the significantly extended red tail appears in the scattered radiation. We also find that the linear degree of polarization of singly Thomson scattered line radiation is wavelength-dependent and hat there are significant differences in the linear degree of polarization from that computed from classical physics in the far red tail. We propose that the semi-forbidden broad emission line C III]1909 may be significantly contributed from Thomson scattering because this line has small resonance scattering optical depth in the broad absorption line region, which leads to distinct and significant polarized flux in this broad emission line.

We compiled near-infrared photometric and polarimetric catalog of sources in ~3 $9^{\prime}{\times}69^{\prime}$ size field in the eastern side of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). This catalog lists all 1969 sources which are brighter than 14 mag and which signal to noise ratio of degree of polarization is greater than 3 in the J, H, and Ks bands. The photometric and polarimetric data were simultaneously obtained in J, H, and Ks bands using SIRPOL, an imaging polarimeter of the InfraRed Survey Facility (IRSF), in 2008 December and 2011 December. We classified the objects into several groups based on their locations on the color-magnitude diagram and compared their general properties of polarization. We measured wavelength dependence of this field to verify interstellar polarization of the LMC which occurred from the dichroic extinction. We also discuss the polarization structure in this field with the results from molecular cloud studies.
Dielectric property of Ba-modified 0.65Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.35PbTiO3 ceramics having compositions near the morphotropic phase boundary was investigated. For the specimens having Ba contents between 0 and 20 at%, the average transition temperature was decreased linearly with increasing Ba contents and the degree of hysteresis was also decreased with increasing Ba contents. The maximum dielectric constants (K), electric field induced polarization(P) and electrically-induced strain(S) were found to exihibit a maximum value at∼3 at% of Ba. The increase of S and the decrease of hysteresis by minor additions of Ba impurities indicated the development of new higher perfomance actuator materials. The composition of Ba-PMN-PT (10/65/35) may be appropriate for capacitor materials because of low hysteresis and high polarization.
Although Serkowski used a single value K=1.15 in representing all the observed interstellar linear polarization curves by his empirical relation $p({\lambda})/P_{max}$=exp (-K $1n^2({\lambda}_{max}/{\lambda})$), where $p_{max}$ is the maximum polarization at wavelength ${\lambda}_{max}$, we have noticed a meaningful variation in K from observations of 72 stars. By comparing K's with $P_{max}/E_{B-V}\;and\;with\;{\lambda}_{max}$, we have examined how the shape of the polarization curve is related with the degree of grain alignment on one hand, and with grain sizes on the other. We have shown that correlations between K, $P_{max}/E_{B-V}\;and\;with\;{\lambda}_{max}$, are consistent with the idea of Davis-Greenstein mechanism for grain alignment.
Multiscattering occurs when a laser transmits into dense atmosphere targets (e.g. fogs, smoke or clouds), which can cause depolarization effects even though the scattering particles are spherical. In addition, multiscattering effects have additional information about microphysical properties of scatterers. Thus, multiscattering can be utilized to study the microphysical properties of the liquid water cloud. In this paper, a Monte Carlo method was used to simulate multi-scattering transmission properties of Lidar signals in the cloud. The results showed the slope of the degree of linear polarization (SLDLP) can be used to invert the extinction coefficient, and then the cloud effective size (CES) and the liquid water content (LWC) may be easily obtained by using the extinction coefficient and saturation of the degree of linear polarization (SADLP). Based on calculation results, a microphysical properties inversion method for a liquid cloud was presented. An innovative multiscattering polarization Lidar (MSPL) system was constructed to measure the LWC and CES of the liquid cloud, and a new method based on the polarization splitting ratio of the Polarization Beam Splitter (PBS) was developed to calibrate the polarization channels of MSPL. By analyzing the typical observation data of MSPL observation in the northern suburbs of Nanjing, China, the LWC and CES of the liquid water cloud were obtained. Comparisons between the results from the MSPL, MODIS and the Microwave radar data showed that, the microphysical properties of liquid cloud could be retrieved by combining our MSPL and the inversion method.
