  • To acquire the dynamic response and design the controller of the airship, the longitudinal motion of the airship with respect to the vertical gust, which is the nonlinear system, was studied. The effects of the apparent mass and moment of the airship delay the dynamic response and the settling time, which are slower than those of conventional airplanes. The current object of the airship is designed to cruise at 500~1000m altitude. At that height, the atmospheric conditions are generally unstable by wind gust. In this paper, it has been studied for the case of vertical gust, since the apparent mass effects are dominant in has been studied for the case of vertical gust, since the apparent mass effects are dominant in that plane. In addition to the study of the dynamic responses of the airship, the controller was designed using the PID-controller. When the gust was applied, airship responses were recovered of equilibrium states. However, it takes too ling time for recovery and the speed of airship is reduced. So, the aim in this paper was to fasten the recovery speed and to get back the cruising velocity. The control parameters were determined from the stability mode analysis, and the control inputs were the thrust and the elevator deflection angle.

  • A new kind of partially precast or prefabricated castellated steel reinforced concrete beam, which is abbreviated here as CPSRC beam, was presented and introduced in this paper. This kind of CPSRC beam is composed of a precast outer-part and a cast-in-place inner-part. The precast outer-part is composed of an encased castellated steel shape, reinforcement bars and high performance concrete. The cast-in-place inner-part is made of common strength concrete, and is casted with the floor slabs simultaneously. In order to investigate the shear performance of the CPSRC beam, experiments of six CPSRC T-beam specimens, together with experiments of one cast-in-place SRC control T-beam specimen were conducted. All the specimens were subjected to sagging bending moment (or positive moment). In the tests, the influence of casting different strength of concrete in the cross section on the shear performance of the PPSRC beam was firstly emphasized, and the effect of the shear span-to-depth ratio on that were also especially taken into account too. During the tests, the shear force-deflection curves were recorded, while the strains of concrete, the steel shapes as well as the reinforcement stirrups at the shear zone of the specimens were also measured, and the crack propagation pattern together with the failure pattern was as well observed in detail. Based on the test results, the shear failure mechanism was clearly revealed, and the effect of the concrete strength and shear span-to-depth ratios were investigated. The shear capacity of such kind of CPSRC was furthermore discussed, and the influences of the holes on the steel shape on the shear performance were particularly analyzed.

  • The main purpose of retaining wall methods for deep excavation is to keep the construction site safe from the earth pressure acting on the backfill during the construction period. Currently used retaining wall methods include the common strut method, anchor method, slurry wall method, and raker method. However, these methods have drawbacks such as reduced workspace and intrusion into private property, and thus, efforts are being made to improve them. The most advanced retaining wall method is the prestressed wale system, so far, in which a load corresponding to the earth pressure is applied to the wale by using the tension of a prestressed (PS) strand wire. This system affords advantages such as providing sufficient workspace by lengthening the strut interval and minimizing intrusion into private properties adjacent to the site. However, this system cannot control the tension of the PS strand wire, and thus, it cannot actively cope with changes in the earth pressure due to excavation. This study conducts a preliminary numerical analysis of the field applicability of the controllable prestressed wale system (CPWS) which can adjust the tension of the PS strand wire. For the analysis, back analysis was conducted through two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) numerical analyses based on the field measurement data of the typical strut method, and then, the field applicability of CPWS was examined by comparing the lateral deflection of the wall and adjacent ground surface settlements under the same conditions. In addition, the displacement and settlement of the wall were predicted through numerical analysis while the prestress force of CPWS was varied, and the structural stability was analysed through load tests on model specimens.

  • A lot of landslides has occurred in rainy seasons beginning at June through September in Korea, where about 70 percent of the total area is mountaneous. Piles can be used as one of the most useful methods to stabilize such landslides. When a row of piles is installed in soil undergoing lateral movement such as landslides, the soil across the open space between the piles can be retained by the arching action of the soil. For the purpose to establish a reasonable design method for stabilizing piles, a method for stability analysis of the slope containing stabilizing piles is presented, using the theoretical equation of the lateral force acting on the piles in soil undergoing lateral movement. In particular, the theoretical equation is arranged by applying the coefcients of lateral force as a simple equation. And also the differential equations proposed in the previous studies for the pile-stability analysis are modified, assumming that the piles above the sliding surface shall be subjected to the lateral reaction from soil in proportion to the pile deflection. Finally, to investigate the effect of stabilizing piles against landslides, an existing landslide slope in Korea is adopted as an example.

  • In current design practice, the thickness of the floor slab has been determined to satisfy requirement for deflection control. However, previous study shows that the floor thicknesses in residential buildings may not satisfy the floor vibration criteria, even though the thickness is determined by the serviceability requirements in current design provisons. Thus it is necessary to develop the procedure to determine slab thickness that satisfies the floor vibration criteria. This study attempts to propose slab thickness for flat plate slab systems that satisfies floor vibration criteria against occupant induced floor vibration(heel drop load). Two boundary conditions(simple and fixed support), three square flat plates(4, 6, 8m), and five concrete strength($18\~30$ MPa) are considered. Since there are large uncertainties in loading and material properties, probabilistic approach is adopted using Monte-Carlo simulation procedures.

  • Modulus of rupture (MOR) and flexural toughness in hybrid fiber reinforced cement pastes mixed with micro-fiber (carbon fiber) and macro-fiber (steel fiber) and replaced with silica fume according to the fixed ratio were researched. Reinforcing efficiency in specimens were estimated by two factors, such as strengthening factor $(F_s)$ and toughening factor $(F_t)$, which were calculated from the analysis of variance (ANOVA) of the response values, such as MOR and absorbtion energy $(W_0)$. According to the experimental design by the fractional orthogonal array, nine hybrid fibrous reinforced paste series and one non-reinforced control paste were manufactured. Specimens of each series were tested by the INSTRON Inc. 8502(model) equipment in three-points bending and then measured the load-deflection response relationships. Considerable strengthening of cement pastes resulted in' the case of other factors without carbon fiber and toughening of cement pastes about all factors showed high. Based on the significance of factors related to response values from ANOVA, following assessments were available; $F_s$ or MOR: silica fume $\gg$ steel fiber $\gg$ carbon fiber; $F_t\;or\;W_0$: steel fiber > carbon fiber > silica fume. Optimized composition condition was estimated by steel fiber of $1.5\%$, carbon fiber of $0.5\%$ and silica fume $7.5\%$ in side of strengthening and steel fiber of $1.5\%$, carbon fiber of $0.75\%$ and silica fume $7.5\%$ in side of toughening.

  • This paper summarizes the experimental study of the shear behaviour of Hybrid Fibre Reinforced Concrete (HFRC) beams retrofitted by using externally bonded Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) laminates. To attain the set-out objectives of the present investigation, steel fibre of 1% and polypropylene fibre of 0.30% was used for hybrid steel-polypropylene fibre reinforced concrete: whereas for hybrid glass-polypropylene fibre reinforced concrete, glass fibre by 0.03% and polypropylene fibre of 0.03% by volume of concrete was used. In this study, 9 numbers of beams were cast and tested into three groups (Group I, II & III). Each group containing 3 numbers of beams, out of which one serve as a control beam or a hybrid steel-polypropylene fibre reinforced concrete beam or a hybrid glass - polypropylene fibre reinforced concrete beam and the remaining two beams were preloaded until shear cracks appeared up to 75% of ultimate load and then preloaded beams (damaged beams) were retrofitted with GFRP laminates at shear zone in the form of strips, as one beam in vertical position and another beam in inclined position to restrict the shear cracks. Finally, the retrofitted beams were loaded until failure and test results were compared. The experimental tests have been conducted to investigate various parameters of structural performance, such as load carrying capacity, crack pattern and failure modes, load-deflection responses and ductility relations. The test results revealed that beams retrofitted using GFRP laminates considerably increased the load carrying capacity. In addition, it was found that beams retrofitted with inclined strip offers superior performance than vertical one. Comparing the test results, it was observed that hybrid steel-polypropylene fibre reinforced concrete beam retrofitted with GFRP laminates showed enhanced behaviour as compared to other tested beams.

  • This paper presents an investigation of the ground response of a gob-side gateroad suffering mining stress induced by a 21 m-thick coal seam extraction. A field observation, including entry convergence and stress changes monitoring, was first conducted in the tailgate 8209. The observation results of entry convergence showed that, during the adjacent panel 8210 retreating period, the deformation of the gob-side gateroad experienced a continuous increase stage, subsequently, an accelerating increase stage, and finally, a slow increase stage. However, strong ground response, including roof bending deflection, rib extrusion and floor heave, occurred during the current panel 8209 retreating period, and the maximum floor heave reached 1530 mm. The stress changes within coal mass of the two ribs demonstrated that the gateroad was always located in the stress concentrated area, which responsible for the strong response of the tailgate 8209. Subsequently, a hydraulic fracture technique was proposed to pre-fracture the two hard roofs above the tailgate 8209, thus decreasing the induced disturbance on the tailgate. The validity of the above roof treatment was verified via field application. The finding of this study could be a reference for understanding the stability control of the gob-side gateroad in extra thick coal seams mining.

  • In order to investigate the effect of second phase on $Al_2O_3$ matrix, SiC particles were dispersed in $Al_2O_3$ matrix as a second phase over the content range of 5 vol.% to 20 vol.%. To this mixture, $Y_2O_3$ or $TiO_2$ powders were added as a sintering additive before isostatically pressing and pressurelessly sintering at 180$0^{\circ}C$ for 90 min in $N_2$ atmosphere. With increasing SiC content, relative densities of composites were decreased but mechanical properties of composites were improvjed. In the case of adding $Y_2O_3$ as a sintering additive, maximum values of flexural strength, hardness and fracture toughness were 525 MPa, 17.1 GPa, 4.1 MPa.m1/2 respectively. In the case of adding X$TiO_2$ as a sintering additive, maximum values of flexural strength, hardness were 285 MPa, 12.1 GPa respectively. Improved mechanical properties were found to be the results of grain growth control of $Al_2O_3$ matrix and crack deflection by the second phase SiC particles.

  • As the economic power is improved and the customer's demand is hard to please, the noise and vibration is the most important yardstick that can determine the quality of the product. Especially, as the airconditioner's demand increase suddenly, the product of quality and the noise is becoming a decisive factor of determining whether purchase the product or not. Therefore, every manufactory is investing a lot of money and research to cut down the unpleasantness induced from noise and vibration. And they are emphasizing their product's difference by advertising a silence very actively. With these reason, the demand of a silent indoor air-conditioner is the essential research filed when the product is develop(:d. In this study, the noise and vibration is visualized in the space and frequency domain by using experimental methods such as operational deflection shape (ODS), modal testing and sound intensity. Also the location of noise source and its characteristic is analyzed in an acoustical point of view to reduce the structure borne noise that come from the fan motor, and the pertinent control method is suggested. Furthermore, the most suitable shape of the motor bracket is suggested by applying FEM and DOE (Design of experiments) in the noise and vibration point a view.
