  • In this paper, the dent printing phenomena and critical dent size which lead to premature failure of deep grooved ball bearing for automobiles are presented. The results of newly assembled test bearings showed that the ball dent size strongly affect the bearing life and inner ring raceways were the major failed parts in spite of using the dented balls. The dent printing phenomena are a root cause of premature failure, which was not reported until now. And there exist the critical ball dent size for given rolling bearings and operating conditions. So, the initial condition of tribologically mating parts should be treated as important as the failed body itself.

  • This paper deals with a premature failure mechanism of deep grooved ball bearing for automobiles. A close examination of used bearings revealed that the premature failure could be arose by dents on the ball. Universal testing machine with specially designed tools is used to simulate the practical dents on the ball and test bearings are assembled with dented balls and new hearing components. The endurance test results showed that the dents on the balls were printed on the races and these phenomena come to premature failure.

Mass-production of WS$_2$ Solid Lubricant and Its applications (WS$_2$ 고체윤활제의 양산 및 적용)

  • The processing conditions for the mass production of platelet WS$_2$ lubricant powder were optimized. The mixture of tungsten and sulfur powders was sealed in a vacuum of 10$^{-3}$ torr and heat-treated at 850$\circ$C for 2 h. The internal pressure of reaction chamber was maintained at certain level by controlling the release valve automatically. The reaction product was the platelet WS$_2$ powder with an average size of 15 $\mu$m. The synthesized WS$_2$ powder was then coated on the wiper-blade of automobiles and the commercial deep-grooved ball bearing using wet and dry coating methods, respectively. High lubricity and wear resistance of wet coated wiper-blade were confirmed by the life test of 70,000 cycles. The life-time of the ball bearing assembled after WS$_2$ coating onto each part increased 50 times compared to the non-coated ball bearing.

  • The processing conditions for the synthesis of platelet WS$_2$ lubricant powder through the solid-gas reaction were optimized. The tungsten and sulfur powders were sealed in a vacuum of 10$^{-6}$ torr, prior to heat-treating at 850$\circ$C for 8 days. The react~on product showed the well-developed platelet WS$_2$ powder with an average size of 3.8 $\mu$m. The synthesized WS$_2$ powder was coated on the commercial deep grooved ball bearing (No. 6203) to examine the effects of WS$_2$ coating layer on the noise and endurance of the ball bearing. The level of noise obtained from WS$_2$ coated-ball bearing was higher (56 dB) than the value occurred in the case of greece (37 dB). The life-time of the ball-bearing assembled after coating WS$_2$ powder increased 50 times compared to the non-coated bali-bearing.

  • For fault detection about the abrasion stage of rotational machineries under the dynamic loading conditions unlike the traditional diagnosis method used in the past decade, the infrared thermographic method with its distinctive advantages in non-contact, non-destructive, and visible aspects is proposed. In this paper, by applying a rotating deep-grooved ball bearing, passive thermographic experiments were conducted as an alternative way to proceeding the traditional fault monitoring on spectrum analyzer. As results, the thermographic experiment was compared with the traditional vibration spectrum analysis to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed method. Based on the results obtained as NDT, the temperature characteristics and abnormal fault detections of the ball bearing according to the abrasion stage were analyzed.

The mixture of tungsten and sulfur powders were sealed in a vacuum of 10$^{-6}$ torr, prior to heat-treating at 85$0^{\circ}C$ fur 8 days. The reaction product showed a well-developed platelet W $S_2$ powder with an average size of 3.8 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The TGA/DTA analysis of the synthesized W $S_2$ powder was performed up to 120$0^{\circ}C$ at a rate of 1$0^{\circ}C$/min in flowing air (100 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$/min) atmosphere. The weight loss was about 6% up to 120$0^{\circ}C$ compared to the original weight. A rapid weight loss of about 5% occurred in the temperature range of 44$0^{\circ}C$ to 66$0^{\circ}C$ and an exothermic peak observed due to the transition of W $S_2$ to W $O_3$. The synthesized W $S_2$powder was coated on the commercial deep grooved ball bearing (No. 6203) to examine the effect of W $S_2$, coating layer on the noise and endurance of the ball bearing. The level of noise obtained from W $S_2$, coated-ball bearing (56 ㏈) was higher. than the value (32 ㏈) occurred in the case of greece lubrication. The endurance of the ball-bearing assembled after the coating of W $S_2$ powder onto each part increased 50 times compared to the non-coated ball-bearing..

  • Fault detection for dynamic loading conditions of rotational machineries was considered from the contactless, non-destructive infrared thermographic method, rather than the traditional diagnosis method. In this paper, by applying a rotating deep-grooved ball bearing, passive thermographic experiment was performed as an alternative way proceeding the traditional fault monitoring. In addition, the thermographic experiments were compared with the vibration spectrum analysis to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed method. Based on the results, it was concluded the temperature characteristics of the ball bearing under dynamic loading conditions were analyzed thoroughly.
