Blind Equalization of Digital Television Broadcasting Signals in Dynamic Multipath Channels (다이내믹 다중경로 채널에서의 디지털 텔레비전 방송 신호에 대한 블라인드 등화)

  • In this paper, proposed is the dual-mode algorithm of blind decision feedback equalizer (DFE) for digital terrestrial television signals. According to channel impairments, the proposed dual-mode algorithm for blind DFE operates in decision-directed mode or in blind mode of operation. The error signals being used in tap update of the equalizer are generated in the best mode of operations, so that the confidence of equalizer tap coefficient update is more accurate. As a result, it is possible to track the channel characteristics variations by automatic switching over between two modes of operations. For 8-level vestigial sideband modulated digital television signals, the mean square errors and symbol error rates of the proposed algorithm are compared with those of conventional methods. And the usability of the proposed scheme is assessed by computer simulations under various static and dynamic multipath channel environments.

Pilot Subcarrier Based Channel Estimation Scheme in IEEE 802.11p Systems (IEEE 802.11p에서 파일럿 부반송파를 이용한 채널추정 기법)

  • It has been grown interests of the convergence technologies about communication systems and vehicular industry. Vehicular communications enable a number of infotainment applications to serve cars under high mobility environments. To achieve this goal, a robust and accurate channel estimation scheme is of great importance. This paper proposes an enhanced Decision-Directed channel estimation scheme called PTAU(Pilot Tone Aided Update) for IEEE 802.11p in vehicular communication environment. Existing approaches which use subsequent data symbols to estimate channel response in time domain will lead to the error propagation. In this paper, we use the pilot subcarriers to get initial channel response, then utilize the correlation characteristics to update channel response in frequency domain. Finally, Analysis and simulation results reveal that the proposed scheme outperforms in bit error rate(BER), significantly improve the performance of the estimation.

Self-Adaptive Performance Improvement of Novel SDD Equalization Using Sigmoid Estimate and Threshold Decision-Weighted Error (시그모이드 추정과 임계 판정 가중 오차를 사용한 새로운 SDD 등화의 자기적응 성능 개선)

  • For the self-adaptive equalization of higher-order QAM systems, this paper proposes a new soft decision-directed (SDD) algorithm that opens the eye patterns quickly as well as significantly reducing the error level in the steady-state when it is applied to the initial equalization stage with completely closed eye patterns. The proposed method for M-QAM application minimized the computational complexity of the existing SDD by the symbol estimated based on the two symbols closest to the observation, and greatly simplified the soft decision independently of the QAM order. Furthermore, in the symbol estimating it increased the reliability of the estimates by applying the superior properties of the sigmoid function and avoiding the erroneous estimation of the threshold function. In addition, the initialization performance was improved when an error is generated to update the equalizer, weighting the symbol decision by the threshold function to the error, resulting in an extension of the range of error fluctuations. As a result, the proposed method improves remarkably the computational complexity and the properties of initialization and convergence of the traditional SDD. Through simulations for 64-QAM and 256-QAM under multipath channel conditions with additive noise, the usefulness of the proposed methods was confirmed by comparing the performance of the proposed 2-SDD and two forms of weighted 2-SDD with CMA.

  • Vehicle communication can facilitate efficient coordination among vehicles on the road and enable future vehicular applications such as vehicle safety enhancement, infotainment, or even autonomous driving. In the $3^{rd}$ Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), many studies focus on long term evolution (LTE)-based vehicle communication. Because vehicle speed is high enough to cause severe channel distortion in vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) environments. We can utilize channel estimation methods to approach a reliable vehicle communication systems. Conventional channel estimation schemes can be categorized as least-squares (LS), decision-directed channel estimation (DDCE), spectral temporal averaging (STA), and smoothing methods. In this study, we propose a smart channel estimation scheme in LTE-based V2V environments. The channel estimation scheme, based on an LTE uplink system, uses a demodulation reference signal (DMRS) as the pilot symbol. Unlike conventional channel estimation schemes, we propose an adaptive smoothing channel estimation scheme (ASCE) using quadratic smoothing (QS) of the pilot symbols, which estimates a channel with greater accuracy and adaptively estimates channels in data symbols. In simulation results, the proposed ASCE scheme shows improved overall performance in terms of the normalized mean square error (NMSE) and bit error rate (BER) relative to conventional schemes.

  • In this paper, we propose a SMMA(Sliced-Multi Modulus Algorithm) adaptive blind equalization algorithm with Flag for high order QAM system. SMMA has improved characteristics by applying the multi contour to MMA. However, SMMA still has a limit that the mismatch problem causes the residual error in the steady state is large. In order to significantly reduce the residual error in the steady state, we propose SMMA, which is controlled by the binary Flag of '1 'or '0' obtained from SMMA and a decision-directed algorithm, and analyze the performance of the proposed algorithm. By computer simulation, it is confirmed that the proposed algorithm has improved performance highly in terms of a residual ISI and a residual error in the steady state compared with MMA and SMMA.

  • This paper proposes the channel estimation method robust to severe frequency selective fading channels in O%M system using wide bandwidth for the high data rate transmission. DDCE, which uses data between the high correlated symbols, is usually used for channel estimation in the slow fading channels. DDCE can get high gains in the non-selective channels. As the bandwidth of system gets wider, it becomes more severe frequency selective fading environments so that the reliability of data becomes lower and error flow is occurred. FE method, this paper proposed, uses the relation between sub-carriers of OFDM in frequency selective fading channels so FE method gets some gains by adapting the power value at a target frequency to the mean value of channel estimated values of adjacent sub-carriers. Because FE uses only preamble unlike DDCE using data, it is independent of data rate related to the reliability of data and the number of multipath. Consequently, FE can obtain considerable gains in the wideband systems where the errorflow of DDCE is occurred, and FE is applicable to frequency selective fading environments.

  • In this paper, we proposed receiver structure based on an iterative turbo equalization to cope with phase difference between two sensors in MIMO underwater communication channel. In a space-time coded system, it is often assumed that there are no phase errors among the multiple transmitter and receiver chains. In this paper, we have studied the effect of the phase errors between different transmit sensors and different propagation paths in the environment of MIMO underwater communication system, and have shown through BER performance by computer simulations that the bit-error-rate performance can be severely degraded. A decision-directed estimation and compensation algorithm has been proposed to minimize their effects on the system performance. In this paper, we investigate the phase differences and their effects on multiple-input and multiple-output systems, and propose a compensation algorithm for underwater channel model to minimize their effects.

  • In this paper, we propose MSAG-SCS-MMA-I adaptive blind equalization with double step size with very small residual ISI and MSE at steady-state while significantly improving the convergence speed of the traditional SCS-MMA-I algorithm in 256-QAM system. And we evaluate the equalization performance for this algorithm. Different step sizes according to the absolute value of decision-directed error instead of a fixed step-size are applied to the tap update equation of MSAG-SCS-MMA-I, which is controlled by binary flags of '1' or '0' obtained from SCS-MMA-I and decision-directed algorithms. This makes for excellent equalization performance. As a result of computer simulation, we confirmed that the proposed algorithm has more better performance than the MMA, SCS-MMA-I, and MSAG-SCS-MMA-I algorithms in terms of the performance index such as residual ISI, MSE, and MD.

Novel LTE based Channel Estimation Scheme for V2V Environment (LTE 기반 V2V 환경에서 새로운 채널 추정 기법)

  • Recently, in 3rd Generation Partnership Project(3GPP), there is a study of the Long Term Evolution(LTE) based vehicle communication which has been actively conducted to provide a transport efficiency, telematics and infortainment. Because the vehicle communication is closely related to the safety, it requires a reliable communication. Because vehicle speed is very fast, unlike the movement of the user, radio channel is rapidly changed and generate a number of problems such as transmission quality degradation. Therefore, we have to continuously updates the channel estimates. There are five types of conventional channel estimation scheme. Least Square(LS) is obtained by pilot symbol which is known to transmitter and receiver. Decision Directed Channel Estimation(DDCE) scheme uses the data signal for channel estimation. Constructed Data Pilot(CDP) scheme uses the correlation characteristic between adjacent two data symbols. Spectral Temporal Averaging(STA) scheme uses the frequency-time domain average of the channel. Smoothing scheme reduces the peak error value of data decision. In this paper, we propose the novel channel estimation scheme in LTE based Vehicle-to-Vehicle(V2V) environment. In our Hybrid Reliable Channel Estimation(HRCE) scheme, DDCE and Smoothing schemes are combined and finally the Linear Minimum Mean Square Error(LMMSE) scheme is applied to minimize the channel estimation error. Therefore it is possible to detect the reliable data. In simulation results, overall performance can be improved in terms of Normalized Mean Square Error(NMSE) and Bit Error Rate(BER).

Initial Convergence Detection of Blind Equalization Algorithm Automatically (블라인드 등화 알고리즘의 초기 수렴 자동 검출 기법)

  • MCMA(modified constant modulus algorithm) accomplishes blind equalization and carrier phase recovery simultaneously. But, the error level of MCMA is not zero when the equalizer converges completely. Because the MCMA uses a special signal point instead of a original signal point. MCMA-DO(decision-directed) improves the steady-state performance but the performance of equalizer is decided by switching time between the MCMA and the DD. In this paper, according to the residual ISI(intersymbol interference) of the equalizer output, the most suitable switching time is decided automatically.
