In this study, design method for debris flow and drift wood dams used in Japan was evaluated to develop currently available design method practiced in Korea. In Japan, represented a similarity in the aspects of topography and the climate compared with Korea, casualties due to debris flow, landslide, and collapse of cliff as well as earthquake, have been reported every year. Especially, debris flow had often occurred during heavy rainy season rather than due to Typhoons or localized torrential thunderstorms. Since the characteristic of the debris flow reveals in the middle of water flow and soil behaviors, the behavior of debris flow associated with drift wood was not fully understood at this moment and therefore empirical design method to design debris flow dam is adopted in the practice and currently used in Japan. Based on the result of this study, modification of debris flow design method used in Korea are presented.

Localized rainfall due to abnormal climate has caused extensive damages killing several tens to hundreds of people for yearly basis. The typhoon 'Lusa' of year 2002 has resulted 5,400 billion won of property damage and the damages for roads were approximated to be 2,860 billion won at 12,377 locations holding 53% damage of total. The recent typhoon, 'Aewinia' of yeat 2006 caused the 1,400 billion-won property damage including sweeping and flooding of 127 roads and 65 rivers, respectively. There are needs to minimize the damages for important structures for repeated heavy rainfalls every year and, especially, because debris flow might be a main cause of road damage, the design criteria and guideline for roads are required to be improved. Therefore, this paper presented design method of debris-flow control structure for road protection.
With its rapid velocity and wide deposition, debris flow is a natural disaster that causes loss of human life and destruction of facility. To design effective debris barriers, impact force of debris flow should be first considered. Debris flow velocity is one of the key features to estimate the impact force of debris flow. In this study, we conducted small-scale flume experiments to analyze flow characteristics of debris flow, and determine flow resistance coefficients with different slope gradients and sediment mixtures. Flow velocity significantly varied with flume slope and mixture type. Debris flow depth decreased as slope increased, but difference in depth between sediment mixtures was not significant. Among flow resistance coefficients, Chezy coefficient ($C_1$) showed not only relatively highest goodness of fit, but also constant value ($20.19m^{-1/2}\;s^{-1}$) regardless the scale of debris flow events. The overall results suggested that $C_1$ can be most appropriately used to estimate flow velocity, the key factor of assessing impact force, in wide range of debris flow scale.
We developed a computer program (CDFlow v. 1.0) to design countermeasures against debris flows in natural terrain. The program can predict the probability of landslides occurring in natural terrain and can estimate the zone of damage caused by a debris flow. It can also be used to design the location and size of countermeasures against the debris flow. The program is run using the ArcGIS Engine, which is one of the most well-known Geographic Information System (GIS) tools for developers. The quasi-dynamic wetness index and the infinite slope stability equation were applied to predict landslide probability as a type of slope safety factor. The calculated safety factor was compared with the required safety factor, and areas of high probable potential for landslides were then selected and represented on the digital map. The volume of debris flow was estimated using these areas of high probable potential for landslides and soil depth. The accumulated volume of debris flow can be calculated along the flow channel. To assess the accuracy of the program, it was applied to a real landslide site at Deoksan-ri, Inje-gun, Kangwon-Province, where four debris barriers have been installed in the watershed of the site. The results of soil tests and a field survey indicate that the program has great potential for estimating probable landslide areas and the trajectory of debris flows. Calculation of the capacity volume of existing debris barriers revealed that they had insufficient capacity to store the calculated amount of debris flow. Therefore, this program enables a rational estimation of the optimal location and size of debris barriers.

Debris flows are a natural hazard which looks like a combination of flood, land and rock slide. Large rainfall in July 2006 produced several large scale debris flows and many small debris flows that resulted in loss of life and considerable property and highway damage, as was widely reported in the national media. The hazard "debris flow" is still insufficiently researched Furthermore debris flows are very hard to predict. In this paper, a general over view of the debris flow problems along the highway, a generic way for the design and dimensioning of flexible barrier systems will be presented. A brief description of the various unique barrier types will be provided, too. The future for these barrier concepts looks promising because these barriers represent the state of art for such applications and are superior to many other available options.

Flexible Ring net barriers are multi-functional mitigation devices commonly applied to rock fall or floating wood protection in floods, snow avalanches and also mud flows or granular debris flows, if properly dimensioned for the process or processes for which they are intended. Overtopping of the barriers by debris flows and sediment transport is possible, supporting the design concept that a series of barriers may be used to stop volumes of debris larger than are possible using only one barrier. This study was conducted to understand the deposition characteristics of debris flow and to analyze the reduction effect of debris flow damage by installing a berm. Flume experiments were performed in consideration of various channel slope and volumetric sediment concontration. In order to analyze the reduction effect of debris flow damage by installing a berm, the cases of not installing a berm and the cases of installing a berm were compared. In this study, the runout distance, total travel distance, and mobility ratio were analyzed among the deposition characteristics of debris flow. First, the deposition characteristics of debris flow according to the change of the channel slope were analyzed, and the deposition characteristics of debris flow due to the change of volumetric sediment concentration were analyzed. In addition, the change rate of debris flow deposition characteristics when a berm was installed was calculated based on the case when a berm was not installed. As a result of the experiments, it was confirmed that the channel slope and volumetric sediment concentration had a significant effect on the deposition characteristics of debris flow. In addition, when a berm is installed on the slope, the runout distance and mobility ratio of debris flow are greatly decreased, and the total travel distance is increased. This means that installing a berm delays the movement of debris flow and reduces the potential mobility of debris flow. The results of this study will provide useful information for understanding the deposition characteristics of debris flow. Furthermore, it is expected to help in the design of a berm.
Recent researches on debris flow is focused on understanding its movement mechanism and building a numerical simulator to predict its behavior. However, previous simulators emulating fluid-like debris flow have limitations in numerical stability, geometric modeling and application of various boundary conditions. In this study, depth integration is applied to continuity equation and force equilibrium for debris flow. Thickness of sediment, and average velocities in x and y flow direction are chosen for main variables in the analysis, which improve numerical stability in the area with zero thickness. Petrov-Galerkin formulation uses a discontinuous test function of the weighted matrix from DG scheme. Presented mechanical constitutive model combines fluid and granular behaviors for debris flow. Effects on slope angle, inducing debris height, and bottom friction resistance are investigated for a simple slope. Numerical results also show the effect of embankment at the bottom of the slope. Developed numerical simulator can assess various risk factors for the expected area of debris flow, and facilitate embankment design in order to minimize damage.

In this study, a numerical model of debris flow considering driftwood and entrainment erosion is developed. Subsequently, numerical simulations based on the observation data of the 2011 Mt. Umyeon are performed. To develop the debris flow model, the Nays2DFlood model, which is a flooding model based on the shallow water equation, is coupled with the transport diffusion of mixed sediment concentration, debris flow bottom shear stress, and entrainment erosion modules. The simulation closely reproduced the depth, flow velocity, and debris flow volume of Mt. Umyeon. In addition, the reproducibility of the simulation result with driftwood is more accurate than that without driftwood. The results of this study can facilitate in establishing measures to reduce debris disasters, thus alleviating the current increase in debris damage due to climate change.
