Three kinds of amylose derivatives such as: cholesteryloxycarbonated amyloses(CAMs) with degree of esterification(DE) ranging from 1.8 to 3, (6-cholesteryloxycarbonyl)pentanoated amyloses(PAMs) with DE ranging from 0.3 to 3, and fully cholesteryloxycarbonated PAMs(CPAMs) were synthesized, and their thermotropic liquid crystalline properties were investigated. CAMs with $DE{\geq}2.6$, PAM with DE=1.6 and all the CPAMs formed enantiotropic cholesteric phases, whereas PAM with $DE{\geq}2.2$ exhibited monotropic cholesteric phases. PAM with $DE{\geq}2.2$ and CPAMs with (6-cholesteryloxycarbonyl)pentanoyl DE (DS) more than 1.0 formed cholesteric phases with left-handed helical structures whose optical pitches (${\lambda}_{m'}s$) decrease with increasing temperature. However, the ${\lambda}_{m'}s$ of these samples decreased with increasing DS at the same temperature. On the other hand, CAMs, PAM with DE=1.6, and CPAM with DS=0.3 did not display reflection colors over the full cholesteric range, suggesting that the helicoidal twisting power of the cholesteryl group highly depends on the length of the spacer joining the cholesteryl group to the main chain and DS. The thermal stability and degree of order in the mesophase observed for the amylose derivatives highly depended on DE or DS. The results were discussed in terms of the difference ul the hydrogen bond, the internal plasticization, and the decoupling of the motion of side group with the main chain.
Empty fruit bunch (EFB) char was used to remove $NO_x$ and odorous substances. The physicochemical properties of the EFB chars were altered by steam or KOH treatments. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area and porosity were measured to determine the properties of the modified EFB chars. The $deNO_x$ and adsorption test for hydrogen sulphide and acetaldehyde were performed to determine the feasibility of the modified EFB chars. The KOH-treated EFB (KEFB) char revealed higher $deNO_x$ efficiency than with commercial activated carbon. The Cu-impregnated EFB char also had high $deNO_x$ efficiency at temperatures higher than $150^{\circ}C$. The KEFB char showed the highest hydrogen sulphide and acetaldehyde adsorption ability, followed by the steam-treated EFB char and untreated EFB char. Moreover, the product prepared by sulfonation of EFB char showed excellent performance for esterification of palm fatty acid distillate for biodiesel production.
Very low methoxyl pectin (VLMP) has different physical and rheological properties compared to high and low methoxyl pectins (HMP and LMP). In this study, we produced LMP and VLMP by alkaline de-esterification, and investigated the structural and textural properties. Apple peel pectin was kept at pH 12 using 5.0 M NaOH solution for 3 and 24 h to produce LMP and VLMP, respectively. The molecular weight was decreased due to the removal of an esterified group in the pectin backbones by the alkali treatment, and the VLMP showed a higher calcium ion sensitivity which leads to the production of the gel with increased hardness. The result clearly showed that VLMP has the potential to improve the texture and stability in food products depending on their degree of esterification, and this result can be applied as a functional ingredient in food industrial area application to enhance the current commercial pectins.
Three kinds of hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) derivatives: 6- (cholesteryloxycarbonyl) pentoxypropyl celluloses(CHPCs) with degree of esterification(DE) ranging from 0.6 to 3, 6-[4-{4'-(nitrophenylazo)phenoxycarbonyl}] pentoxypropyl celluloses (NHPCs) with DE ranging from 0.4 to 3, and fully 6-(cholesteryloxycarbonyl) pentanoated NHPCs (CNHPCs) were synthesized, and their thermotropic liquid crystalline properties were investigated. All the CHPCs and NHPCs with $DE{\leq}1.7$ formed enantiotropic cholesteric phases, whereas CNHPCs with 6-(cholesteryloxycarbonyl) pentanoyl DE(DEC) more than 1.6 exhibited monotropic cholesteric phases. On the other hand, NHPCs with $DE{\geq}2.4$ and CNHPCs with $DEC{\leq}1.3$ showed monotropic nematic phases. NHPCs with $DE{\leq}l$, as well as HPC, formed right-handed helices whose optical pitches (${{\lambda}_m}'s$) increase with temperature, while all the CHPCs formed left-handed helices whose ${{\lambda}_m}'s$ decrease with temperature. In contrast with these derivatives, NHPCs with $1.4{\leq}DE{\leq}1.7$ and CNHPCs with $DEC{\geq}1.6$ did not display reflection colors over the full cholesteric range, suggesting that the helical twisting power of the cellulose chain and the cholesteryl group highly depends on the chemical structure and DE of mesogenic group.

The changes of methoxy content. compositional sugars. degree of esterification (DE) and pectic substances such as LMP (low methoxy pectin), HMP (high methoxy pectin) IAP (ionically associated pectin) and CBP (covalently bounded pectin) of Fuji apple were investigated during maturity. The contents of LMP+HMP and IAP+CBP in alcohol insoluble solid(AIS) were 70% and 20%. respectively. These pectic substances were increased slightly during maturity. The reductions of hexose and uronic acid were Iron 20-50% and from 2-4%, respectively, but the inclosed of pentose was from 1-9% in LMP, HMP, IAP and CBP during maturity of Fuji apple. The galactose was decreased significantly among hexose. Whereas the relative ratio of uronic acid in HMP and CBP was increased.

The root-knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita infects a variety of plants, including Arabidopsis thaliana. During migration, root-knot nematodes secrete different proteins to modify cell walls, which include pectolytic enzymes. However, the contribution of host cell wall proteins has not been described during this process. The function of two DUF642 cell wall proteins, BIIDXI (BDX, At4g32460) and TEEBE (TEB, At2g41800), in plant development could be related to the regulation of pectin methyl esterification status in the cell walls of different tissues. Accordingly, the expression of these two genes is up-regulated by auxin. BDX and TEB were highly induced during early M. incognita inoculation. Moreover, cell wall localization of the proteins was also induced. The cell wall localization of BDX and TEB DUF642 proteins during M. incognita early inoculation suggested that these two proteins could be involved in the regulation of the degree of pectin methylation during cell separation.
A new hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC) capable of exhibiting reflection colours in the temperature ranges of about 60-$130^{\circ}C$ and acrylic acid esters of HPC (ESs) with degree of esterification (DE) ranging from 1 to 3 were synthesized. The crosslinked ES films with the optical pitch ($\lambda_m$) ranging throughout the visible region were also prepared by exposing thermotropic cholesteric phases of ESs with a DE of more than 2 to UV light at $50^{\circ}C$. The thermal and optical properties for both the uncrosslinked and crosslinked samples and the swelling behavior of the crosslinked films in acetone were investigated. The $\lambda_m$'s of ESs, as well as HPC itself, increased with temperature. However, the $\lambda_m$'s of ESs were larger than of HPC at the same temperature and decreased with increasing DE. The temperature dependence of $\lambda_m$of the crosslinked samples was much weaker than that of ESs. Moreover, in contrast with ESs that exhibit a decrease of the isotropization temperature with increase in the DE, the networks were found to decompose at about $210^{\circ}C$, giving no transition to an isotropic state. The crosslinked samples exhibited an anisotropic swelling, suggesting that the two-dimensional crosslinking preferentially performs between ES molecules.

Fenofibrate has been proven to reduce adiposity. Since gestation produces an increase in white adipose tissue (WAT) mass, we comparatively studied this drug-effect in virgin and pregnant rats. Fenofibrate reduced lumbar WAT weight in both pregnant and virgin rats. Fenofibrate treatment did not modify plasma free fatty acid (FFA) concentration in virgin rats, it greatly increased it in pregnant animals. Remarkable differences between the two groups were obtained for two proteins related to fatty acid oxidation and esterification and storing. Respectively, the mRNA levels of carnitine palmitoyltransferase I (CPT-I) were increased by the fenofibrate only in the virgin rats and a similar finding was observed for the expression of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK). These findings indicate that fenofibrate reduces adiposity in pregnant and virgin rats through different mechanisms: a) in virgin rats, by promoting fatty acid oxidation; and b) in pregnant rats, by enhancing fatty acid output.

Citronellyl valerate was synthesized by a lipase from a Rhizopus sp strain isolated and the lipase produced, at UNICAMP, Brazil. Direct esterification was performed in a solvent-free medium to produce the flavor ester. Response surface methodology was used to optimize the process with respect to the substrate molar ratio and lipase concentration. The results show that the synthesis of citronellyl valerate can be carried out in a solvent-free medium, the maximum ester conversion rate achieved being 91.5% after 48 hours of reaction time.
(6-Cholesteryloxycarbonylpentoxypropyl)celluloses (CHPCs) with degree of esterification (DE) ranging from 2.25 to 2.91 were synthesized by reacting hydroxypropyl cellulose with 6-cholesteryloxycarbonylpentanoyl chloride. The acrylic esters of CHPCs (CHPCEs) and their photocrosslinked films with liquidcrystalline order were also synthesized. The thermotropic properties of mesophase for both uncrosslinked and crosslinked samples and the swelling behavior of the crosslinked samples in acetone were investigated. The hydroxypropyl cellulose exhibited an enantiotropic cholesteric phas, while all the uncrosslinked cholesterylbearing samples exhibited a monotropic cholesteric phases; the 6-cholesteryloxycarbonylpentanoyl chloride also showed a monotropic smectic phase. The hydroxypropyl cellulose formed a right-handed helix whose optical pitch (λ$\sub$m/) increases with temperature, whereas all the uncrosslinked derivatives farmed left-handed helices whose λ$\sub$m/'s decreased with temperature. The thermal stability of the mesophase and the magnitude of λ$\sub$m/ at the same temperature for both CHPCs and CHPCEs decreased with increasing DE. All the crosslinked samples, in constrast with CHPCEs, did not display reflection colors but exhibited an anisotropic swelling characteristic of crosslinked gel retaining liquid-crystalline order.
