산업체 주.야간 근로자의 건강관련사항 및 식품섭취상태에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Health and Food Intakes of Industrial Workers Who Works Day and Night)

  • The purpose of this study was examine the health and food intakes of industrial workers who worked day and night. The questionnaire asked them about their health, stress, knowledge of nutrition, food habits, food intakes and frequency. The night-time workers had a stomachache compaired with day-time workers. Male day-time workers were more prone to stress than night-time workers in the area of job. In the areas of nutritional knowledge and food habits, there were no significant differences between day-and night-time workers for both male and female. Intakes of rice, bread, noddle, meat, fish. beans, vegetables in night-time workers were less than day-time workers. Also the male night-time workers consumed more milk and carbonated drinks than the day-time workers. The night-time workers were worse than the day-time workers and the female night-time workers were the worst. Considering the above results, the night-time workers should correct their food habits and have a well-balanced diet.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the eating habits and nutrient intake of industrial workers who work day and night shifts. In the area of percentage of skipped meals, the day shift workers responded that they usually skipped breakfast and the night shift workers often skipped lunch and dinner. The day shift workers answered that they skipped meals because of lack of time. The night shift workers cited poor appetite as their main reason for skipping meals. The intake of calories, Vitamin $B_2$ and calcium of the industrial workers who worked day and night shift was lower than the Korean RDA. The intake of iron of the male night shift workers was lower than the Korean RDA The intake of calories, protein, calcium, iron, Vitamin $B_2$and niacin, vitamin C of the female night shift workers was lower than the Korean RDA. In the area of nutrient intake, the night shift workers both male and female got lower scales than the day shift workers. The nutrient intake of the female night shift workers was the worst. Because they cook for themselves and live alone, their nutrient intake and eating habits were bad. The night shift workers were worse than the day shift workers and the female night shift workers were the worst. Considering the above results, night shift workers should correct their poor eating habits, their nutrient intake and have a well-balanced diet.

Self-Reported Recovery from 2-Week 12-Hour Shift Work Schedules: A 14-Day Follow-Up

  • Background: Recovery from fatigue is important in maintaining night workers' health. This study compared the course of self-reported recovery after 2-week 12-hour schedules consisting of either night shifts or swing shifts (i.e., 7 night shifts followed by 7 day shifts) to such schedules consisting of only day work. Methods: Sixty-one male offshore employees-20 night workers, 16 swing shift workers, and 25 day workers-rated six questions on fatigue (sleep quality, feeling rested, physical and mental fatigue, and energy levels; scale 1-11) for 14 days after an offshore tour. After the two night-work schedules, differences on the $1^{st}$ day (main effects) and differences during the follow-up (interaction effects) were compared to day work with generalized estimating equations analysis. Results: After adjustment for confounders, significant main effects were found for sleep quality for night workers (1.41, 95% confidence interval 1.05-1.89) and swing shift workers (1.42, 95% confidence interval 1.03-1.94) when compared to day workers; their interaction terms were not statistically significant. For the remaining fatigue outcomes, no statistically significant main or interaction effects were found. Conclusion: After 2-week 12-hour night and swing shifts, only the course for sleep quality differed from that of day work. Sleep quality was poorer for night and swing shift workers on the $1^{st}$ day off and remained poorer for the 14-day follow-up. This showed that while working at night had no effect on feeling rested, tiredness, and energy levels, it had a relatively long-lasting effect on sleep quality.

섬유제조업 여성 근로자들의 교대작업에 따른 수면실태와 위장관장애 (Sleeping Patterns and Gastrointestinal Disorders According to the Shift Works in Female Textile Workers)

  • To investigate the sleeping patterns and gastrointestinal disorders of shift workers, the author studied 434 female workers who worked at textile industry ill Taejon city from September 1,1992 to September 31,1992. Shift pattern were divided into 3 categories ; 3 shift(shifts per 8 hours), 2 shift(day and night shift) and day work. The results obtained were as follows : 1 The average sleeping hours when adjusted for the education level of the total study subjects was 6.1 hours. That of 3 shift workers was 6.1 hours, 2 shift workers was 6.0 hours, but that of day workers was 6.5 hours. There were no significant difference among the shift workers. 2. For the 3 shift workers, the average physiologic adjusted duration in day shift (2.2 days) was shorter than that of night shift(2.7 days) and there were significant difference among the rotating shift works (p<0.001). The sleeping problems in day shift was less than those of night shift (p<0.001). 3. 44.9% of 3 shift workers, 39.3% of 2 shift workers and 33.1% of day workers complained gastrointestinal symptoms when adjusted for the age, education level, job tenure, work post. And the rates of gastrointestinal symptoms complained increase with job tenures (p<0.001). 4. The most frequent gastrointestinal diseases were gastitis and gastric ulcer with 14.2% , Irritable bowel syndrome with 3.1 %, duodenitis and duodenal ulcer with 2.1% and combined gastrointestinal disease with 2.1%. Age, eating habit, amount of coffee per day, job tenure, work post and shift pattern showed no significant difference with the gastrointestinal diseases when adjusted for the age. According to the above results, the author suggested that the shift pattern and job tenure can affect to the sleeping problem and gastrointestinal symptoms.

한 대학병원에 근무하는 교대근무자와 일반근무자의 월경 양상에 관한 연구 (A Comparative Study on the Characteristics of Menstruation in the Shift workers and the Day Workers)

  • Purpose : To investigate and compare the characteristics of menstruation in the shift workers and the day workers, and present guidelines for health promotion of the shift-working women. Methods : Questionnaires including general health condition and QSCC II were distributed to shift-working women and day-working women in one university hospital in Gyeonggi-do and 36 questionnaires of shift-working women and 33 of day-working women were analyzed. Results : Day workers were about 5 years older than shift workers on average. There was more irregularity of menstrual cycle and period in day-working group but it is thought to incorrect because of the age problem. There were more women who have dysmenorrhea in day-working group, but the proportion of dysmenorrhea which continues more than 72 hours -which is very suggestive of secondary dysmenorrhea- was higher in shift-working group. Average VAS of dysmenorrhea was nearly the same in two groups. The life of shift-working group was lesser satisfactory than that of day-working group. There were more sleep disturbances in the shift-working group. Sasang constitution was analyzed in both group using QSCC II, and Taeumin were more in shift-working group. Conclusion : As the number of shift-working women increases, needs for oriental medical treatments would increase because it is more natural and lesser invasive managements which women are very interested in. So it is thought to be necessary to understand health problems of shift-working women, and prepare guidelines for managements and treatments to promote the health of shift-working women.

근무 양상(주간과 야간)이 근로자 건강에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 동향 (Literature review of effect of work pattern (day shift and night shift) on worker's health)

  • Based on a literature review regarding shift work, it is recognized that it has an adverse effect on workers' health. Especially, the night shift rather than the day shift imposes severe disorders on workers, which are indicated to dyssomnia, maladaptation to social life, and health problems such as gastroenteric trouble, cardiovascular diseases and depression. As the shift work can be explainable by using workers' labor ability necessarily to maintain company business consistently, it does not consider biorhythm, active mass and health condition of workers Actually duration of shit work would deprive workers of fundamental life rights by causing physical and mental effects. As a result of reviewing previous case studies related to effect of work pattern (day shift and night shift) on workers' health, an incidence of physical diseases like dyssomnia, gastroenteric trouble, cardiovascular diseases and premature delivery was higher in shift workers than normal workers. Additionally the incidence of mental disorders such as busy brain, social isolation, depression and work stress was also higher in shift workers than normal workers. These adverse physical and mental problems were intensified to night shift workers compared to day shift workers. Considering current various reports and study results, it is recommended that the shift work, especially the night work pattern, should not apply to contemporary work situation for sustaining workers' health condition constantly.

자동차공장 교대작업 근로자들의 건강상태평가 (Health Assessment of Shift Workers in a Automobile Manufacturing Plant)

  • 교대작업이 근로자의 육체적, 정신적 및 사회적 건강에 미치는 영향을 조사하고자 1993년 5월 한 달간 경상남도 울산시 소재 모 자동차 공장 생산직 근로자 659명(교대작업자 : 544, 주간작업자 : 115)을 대상으로 설문조사 및 면접조사를 실시하였다. 조사시점에서 현재 교대작업을 하고 있으며 자신의 근무기간 중 80% 이상을 교대작업에 참여한 근로자를 지속적인 교대작업자로 간주하였으며, 조사 당시 교대작업에 참여하고 있지 않고 과거에도 교대 작업에 참여한 경험이 전혀 없었던 근로자룰 주간작업자로 하였다. 교대작업군과 대조군의 일반적인 특성 및 작업과 관련된 특성은 자기기입식 설문지를 이용하여 조사하였으며, 교대작업에 관련된 내용은 면접을 통한 자기기입식 설문지를 이용하여 조사하였다. 근로자의 수면양상과 식사형태에 관한 설문은 National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health에서 개발된 항목을 이용하여 조사하였으며, 위장관계질환의 자각증상에 관하여서도 자기기입식 설문지를 이용하여 조사하였다. 근로자의 일반적인 안녕 상태와 장해는 미국의 Health and Nutrition Examination Survey에서 개발된 자기기입식 설문인 General Well-Being Schedule(GWB)에 의해 측정되었다. 교대작업자에서 자신이 원하는 수면시간보다 1시간 이상 수면이 모자란다고 호소한 근로자가 56.8%로 주간작업군의 50.0%보다 높았으며, 수면 중 2회 이상 잠을 깨는 근로자의 비율, 잠에서 깨었다 다시 잠들기가 힘들다고 호소한 근로자의 비율, 일주일에 2일 이상 작업 중 피곤하거나 졸리다고 호소한 근로자의 비율, 일주일에 2일 이상 작업이 끝난 후에도 피곤하거나 졸리다고 호소한 근로자의 비율은 주간 작업자보다 교대작업자에서 현저하게 높았으며(p<0.01), 교대작업자에서 자고 일어난 후에도 피로감을 호소하는 율도 교대작업군에서 53.1%로 주간작업자의 40.0%보다 높았다(p<0.05). 수면의 형태를 보면 교대작업자에서는 각 교대작업 때마다 다른 형태의 수면을 취하는 근로자가 35.9%로 가장 많은 비율을 차지하였으며, 잠을 잘 못 잔다고 호소하는 근로자도 12.3%로 주간작업자의 6.1%보다 훨씬 많은 비율을 차지하였다. 잠을 자기 위해 약물을 상습적으로 복용하는 근로자도 주간작업자에서 1.7%, 교대작업자에서 2.8%를 차지하였다. 교대작업자들과 주간작업자는 다른 형태의 식사형태를 보였으나 유의한 차이는 없었으며, 식욕은 주간작업자의 13.0%에서 아주 좋다라고 응답한 반면 교대작업자에서는 6.6%만이 식욕이 아주 좋다라고 응답하였으며, 식욕이 매우 나쁘다라고 응답한 비율도 5.0%로 주간작업자의 2.5%보다 높았다. 교대작업자와 주간작업자의 위장관계 자각증상 호소율은 교대작업군에서 높았으며(p<0.01), 배변습관의 변화와 체중감소 호소율도 교대작업자에서 주간작업자에 비해 유의하게 높았다(p<0.05). 근로자의 일반적인 안녕 상태와 장해는 HANES I에서 개발된 General Well-Being Schedule(GWB)에 의해 측정되었는데 불안척도, 우울척도, positive well-being척도, 활력척도에서는 교대작업군에서 통계적으로 유의하게 낮았으며(p<0.05). 자기제어력척도, 일반건강척도도 교대 작업자에서 낮았으나 유의한 수준은 아니었다. 이상의 결과를 종합해 볼 때, 교대작업자에서 생체리듬의 부조화로 인한 수면, 식사, 위장관계장해 등의 일련의 자각증상에 대한 호소율이 주간작업자에 비해 전반적으로 높았으며, 일반적인 건강 장해 호소율도 교대작업자에서 높았다.

Working hours and the regulations for night shift workers

  • There are several types of shift work in Korea: rotating shift, 24-hour shift, day-night shift, fixed night work, and.so on. As a result of analyzing the 8th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and the 6th Korean Working Condition Survey, Korean shift workers accounted for 11.6%-13.9% of wage workers. Weekly working hours of shift workers were 57.69 ± 1.73 (24-hours shift) and 49.97 ± 0.67 (fixed night shift), which were significantly longer than day workers. To prevent health consequences of night work, many countries regulate the working hours of night work not to exceed 7-9 hours a day. However, Korea does not regulate working hours for night work, and some occupations may work more hours than the prescribed overtime hours. To prevent health consequences and reduce working hours for Korean night shift workers, it is necessary to regulate the working hours of night shift workers by law.

Association between shift work and serum homocysteine level in female electronic manufacturing services workers

  • Background: Shift work has been shown to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) based on several evidences. The classic risk factors of CVD include age, hypertension, smoking, obesity and diabetes. Recently, the serum homocysteine level has been reported to be a valuable indicator of CVD risk. This study aimed to determine the variation in serum homocysteine level as a cardiovascular risk indicator among female workers according to shift work. Methods: The data of regular health examination of workers at an electronic manufacturing services company in Yeongnam region, South Korea in 2019 were examined in this study. The investigation was based on a cross-sectional study conducted on 697 female workers (199 day workers and 498 shift workers). The sociodemographic and biochemical characteristics were compared between day workers and shift workers. Through a logistic regression analysis, the odds ratio (OR) of the increased serum homocysteine level in relation to shift work was determined. Results: Compared to female day workers, female shift workers showed significantly higher level of serum homocysteine (8.85 ± 2.16 vs. 9.42 ± 2.04 μmol/mL; p = 0.001). The OR of day workers against shift workers was 1.81 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.25-2.63). With the adjustment of variables that may influence the level of serum homocysteine, the adjusted OR was 1.68 (95% CI: 1.09-2.60). Conclusions: The serum homocysteine level was significantly higher in shift workers than in day workers. It is thus likely to be a useful predictor of CVD in shift workers.

남성과 여성 사무직 근로자의 신체활동에 미치는 영향요인 비교 (A Study on Gender Differences in Influencing Factors of Office Workers' Physical Activity)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine gender differences in effects of self-efficacy, exercise benefits and barriers, and demographic factors on the physical activity. Methods: Seventy sedentary office workers, 35 male and 35 female, from a major airline company, completed a questionnaire from March 28 to April 5, 2012. Steps and body mass indices were measured using a CW-700/701 (Yamax) pedometer and Inbody 720 (Biospace), respectively. Data were analyzed using t-test, $x^2$-test, multiple linear regression, and simultaneous quantile regression. Results: For male workers, exercise self-efficacy had a significant effect on physical activity, but only when respondents were at 10%(3,431 steps/day, p=.018) and 25%(4,652 steps/day, p=.044) of the physical activity distribution. For female workers, marital status was significantly related to physical activity, but only when respondents were at 10% (3,537 steps/day, p=.013) and 25%(3,862 steps/day, p=.014) of the physical activity distribution. Conclusion: Quantile regression highlights the heterogeneous effect of physical activity determinants among office workers. Therefore intervention strategies for increasing physical activity should be tailed to genders as well as physical activity levels.
