  • Honorific agreement is one of the main properties in languages like Korean, playing a pivotal role in appropriate communication. This makes the deep processing of honorific information crucial in various computational applications such as spoken language translation and generation. This paper shows that departing from previous literature, an adequate analysis of Korean honorification needs to involve a system that has access not only to morpho-syntax but to semantics and pragmatics as well. Along these lines, this paper offers a constraint-based HPSG analysis of Korean honorification in which the enriched lexical information tightly interacts with syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic levels for the proper honorific system.

  • In the present study, the production of grammatical morphemes of Korean-speaking children with and without developmental language impairments was investigated. Ten children with language impairments (LI) (CA: 4; 4-6; 11, LA: 3; .6-5; 10) and 10 normal children (CA: 3;1-6;3, LA: 3;5-5;11) with matched language abilities participated in the study. Sixty pairs of pictures were used to elicit 12 types of predetermined grammatical morphemes. The two pictures of a pair were designed to elicit two sentences of the same sentence structure. After the investigator described one picture of a pair, the children were asked to describe the other picture. The LI children made more errors than the normal children in the production of 6 types of grammatical morphemes including: locative case marker, dative case marker, two connective endings of predicates representing cause and goal, and suffixes for passive and causative verbs. However, the LI children produced some grammatical morphemes as accurately as. the normal children. The two groups were similar in their error patterns. Some explanations for Korean-speaking LI children's use of grammatical morphemes were suggested.

  • The bonding configuration and adsorption stability of alanine and leucine adsorbed on Ge(100)-2${\times}$1 surface were investigated and compared using core-level photoemission spectroscopy (CLPES) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The bonding configuration, stability, and adsorption energies were evaluated for two different coverage levels. In both cases, the C 1s, N 1s, and O 1s core-level spectra at a low coverage (0.30 ML) indicated that the carboxyl and amine groups participated in bonding with the Ge(100) surface in an "O-H dissociated-N dative bonded structure". At high coverage levels (0.60 ML), both this structure and an "O-H dissociation bonded structure" were present. As a result, we found that alanine adsorbs more easily (lower adsorption energy) than leucine on Ge(100) surfaces due to less steric hindrance of side chain.

  • The impersonal or psyc-predicate construction in Old English (=OE) poses a special challenge for most case theories in generative linguistics. In the OE impersonal construction, the experiencer argument is marked by dative, accusative, or nominative, whereas the theme is marked by nominative, genitive, or accusative, or by a PP. The combinations of possible cases for experiencer and theme are not random, bringing about daunting complexity for possible and impossible case frames. In this paper, I develop a conceptual semantic case theory (a la Jackendoff 1990, 1997, 2002; Yip, Maling, and Jackendoff 1987) to provide a unified account for the complicated case frames of the OE impersonal construction. In the conceptual semantic case theory, syntax and semantics have their own independent case assignment principles. For impersonal verbs in OE, I propose that UG leave an option of determining either syntactic or semantic case to lexical items. This proposal opens a new window for the OE impersonal construction, in that it naturally explains both possible and impossible case frames of the construction.

  • The most stable adsorption structures and their corresponding energies of 4-pyridone, 4-hydroxypyridine, 2-pyridone and 2-hydroxypyridine have been investigated by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculation method and high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy (HRPES). We confirmed that between the two reaction centers of 4- and 2-pyridone, only O atom of carbonyl functional group can act as a Lewis base and thus, O dative bonding structure is the most stable. On the other hand, we clarified that both the two reaction centers (the cyclic N atom and the O atom of hydroxyl functional group) of 4- and 2-hydroxypyridine (tautomers of 4- and 2-pyridone) can successfully function as a Lewis base. Through the interpretation of the N 1s and O 1s core level spectra obtained using HRPES, we could confirm the electronic structures and bonding configurations of these molecules with a coverage dependence on the Ge(100) surface.

  • High-resolution photoemission spectroscopy (HRPES) measurements were collected and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were conducted to track the coverage dependent variation of the absorption structure of 2-thiophenecarboxaldehyde (C4H3SCHO: TPCA) on the Ge(100) surface at room temperature. In an effort to identify the most probably adsorption structures on the Ge(100) surface, we deposited TPCA molecules at a low coverage and at a high coverage and compared the differences between the electronic features measured using HRPES. The HRPES data provided three possible adsorption structures of TPCA on the Ge(100) surfaces, and DFT calculations were used to determine the plausibility of the structures. HRPES analysis, corroborated by DFT calculations, indicated that an S-dative bonded structure was the most probable adsorption structure at relatively lower coverage levels, the [4+2] cycloaddition structure was the second most probable structure, and the [2+2]-C=O cycloaddition structure was the last probable structure on the Ge(100) surfaces at relatively higher coverage levels.

  • In this paper, we maintain that case makers '에e' and '에게ege', and '에서eseo' and '에게서egeseo' are not two separate morphemes but are simply allomorphs of the same morphemes respectively. When '에e' and '에게ege' are used as a dative marker, they show exactly the same semantic function and are in complementary distribution in relation to the semantic features of their preceding noun; that is, if the preceding noun is an animate noun, '에게ege' is used and '에e' is used if not. Also, '에게서egeseo' and '에서eseo' as ablative and locative case makers show exactly the same semantic function and show complementary distribution depending on whether the preceding noun is animate or non-animate. Therefore, we assume that these markers are semantically conditioned allomorphs.

  • Understanding the reaction mechanisms and structures underlying the adsorption of biomolecules on semiconductors is important for functionalizing semiconductor surfaces for various bioapplications. Herein, we describe the characteristic behavior of a primary nucleobase adsorbed on the semiconductor Ge(100). The adsorption configuration of guanine, a primary nucleobase found in DNA and RNA, on the semiconductor Ge(100) at an atomic level was investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. When adsorbed on Ge(100) at room temperature, guanine appears dark in STM images, indicating that the adsorption of guanine on Ge(100) occurs through N-H dissociation. In addition, DFT calculations revealed that "N(1)-H dissociation through an O dative bonded structure" is the most favorable adsorption configuration of all the possible ones. We anticipate that the characterization of guanine adsorbed on Ge(100) will contribute to the development of semiconductor-based biodevices.

  • The Adsorption structures of phenylalanine on Ge(100) surface have been investigated as a function of coverage using high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy (HRPES) and density functional (DFT) calculation. To converge these experimental and theoretical conclusion, we systematically performed HRCLPES measurements and DFT calculation for various coverage in the adsorption structures of phenylalanine molecules on the Ge(100) surface. In this study, we found two different adsorption structure as a function of coverage in phenylalanine on Ge(100), monitoring three core level spectra (Ge 3d, C 1s, N 1s, and O 1s) using HRPES Through analysis of the binding energies, we confirmed that O-H dissociated and N dative-bonded structure emerges at low coverage (0.10 ML), which is the same to the result of glycine and alanine on Ge(100) system, whereas O-H dissociation structure also appears at higher coverage. Moreover, we observed the shape of phenyl group being included in phenylalanine is changed from flat to tilting structure at final state using DFT calculation. Through the spectral analysis for phenylalanine, we will demonstrate variation of coverage dependent structural change for phenylalanine on Ge(100) surface using experimental (HRPES) and theoretical studies (DFT calculation).

  • In recent years, there has been rapid progress in different areas of vision science, such as refractive surgical procedures, contact lenses and spectacles, and near vision. This progress requires a highly accurate modeling of optical performance of the human eyes in different accommodation states. A new novel model-eye was designed using the Navarro accommodation-dependent finite model eye. For each of the vergence distances, ocular wavefront error, accommodative response, and visual acuity were calculated. Using the new model eye ocular wavefront error, accommodation dative response, and visual acuity are calculated for six vergence stimuli, -0.17D, 1D, 2D, 3D, 4D and -5D. Also, $3^{rd}\;and\;4^{th}$ order aberrations, modulation transfer function, and visual acuity of the accommodation-dependent model eye were analyzed. These results are well-matched to anatomical, biometric, and optical realities. Our corrected accommodation-dependent model-eye may provide a more accurate way to evaluate optical transfer functions and optical performances of the human eye.
