With the development of many methods of studying the brain, the field of neuroscience has generated large amounts of information obtained from various techniques: imaging techniques, electrophysiological techniques, techniques for analyzing brain connectivity, techniques for getting molecular information of the brain, etc. A plenty of neuroinformatics databases have been made for storing and sharing this useful information and those databases can be publicly accessed by researchers as needed. However, since there are too many neuroinformatics databases, it is difficult to find the appropriate database depending on the needs of researcher. Moreover, many researchers in neuroscience fields are unfamiliar with using neuroinformatics databases for their studies because data is too diverse for neuroscientists to handle this and there is little precedent for using neuroinformatics databases for their research. Therefore, in this article, we review databases in the field of neuroscience according to both their methods for obtaining data and their objectives to help researchers to use databases properly. We also introduce major neuroinformatics databases for each type of information. In addition, to show examples of novel uses of neuroinformatics databases, we represent several studies that combine neuroinformatics databases of different information types and discover new findings. Finally, we conclude our paper with the discussion of potential applications of neuroinformatics databases.
In this paper, we propose an XML based meta-data specification for industrial speech databases. Building speech databases is very time-consuming and expensive. Recently, by the government supports, huge amount of speech corpus has been collected as speech databases. However, the formats and meta-data for speech databases are different depending on the constructing institutions. In order to advance the reusability and portability of speech databases, a standard representation scheme should be adopted by all speech database construction institutions. ETRI proposed a XML based annotation scheme [51 for speech databases, but the scheme has too simple and flat modeling structure, and may cause duplicated information. In order to overcome such disadvantages in this previous scheme, we first define the speech database more formally and then identify object appearing in speech databases. We then design the data model for speech databases in an object-oriented way. Based on the designed data model, we develop the meta-data specification for industrial speech databases.
Many bioinformatics sites have managed local bio-databases, including major databases such as GenBank and PIR with update load. We have developed several programs to monitor the update status of these databases and to FTP them automatically. These programs can be used for maintaining local bio-databases as recent versions and providing up-to-date databases through FTP sites. Currently, the program serves major bio-databases and will extend to accommodate many more bio-databases.
Data can be considered a core driver of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and databases are needed to create value by efficiently obtaining, storing and analyzing the data. However, there are currently no adequate valuation methods to handle databases. This study aims first, to understand databases as the subject of valuation and analyze value drivers of databases, and second, to propose a database valuation model based on this finding. To this end, we derive value drivers of databases from the characteristics and value criteria of databases observed in previous studies. Based on survey data from 396 database service firms we verify the value drivers through linear regression analysis. We find that the annual growth rate in database capacity and the data types positively affect sales of databases and offer ways to utilize them when estimating the cash flow, which is the variable to apply the discounted cash flow method-based income approach. This study contributes empirical insights into how to valuate databases considering their value drivers.
Recently, the use of electronic drug information databases has been increased alternative to printed references. However, databases vary widely in quality and quantity of drug information provided and many questions have arisen about their accuracy, completeness, and reliability. This study was designed to compare and evaluate the drug information contained in four Korean drug information databases which are available on CD-ROM and internet. Four Korean drug information databases selected to be evaluated were eKIMS, Datapower, KPA Standard Drug Information and Korean Drug Formulary. Databases were searched and evaluated from August 10 to September 30, 2000 by the same trained searcher to minimize the bias. The database evaluation form was developed for objective evaluation of each databases in terms of credibility of database, convenience of use and other characteristics. The second form was developed for quantitative and qualitative assessment of the drug information provided by the databases. The results of the study showed that there were no significant differences in 4 databases in terms of convenience of use and other characteristics. However, for credibility of databases, Korean Drug Formulary was significantly superior to all other databases (P<0.05). It showed that information provided by Korean Drug Formulary was the best in terms of pharmacokinetics, chemistry, comparisons and eKIMS was the best in terms of drug identification (P<0.05). For accuracy and completeness of information provided, the study could not find a significant difference between 4 databases (P>0.05).
Currently the copyright law and the online digital contents industry development law aim to protect the producers of databases and digital contents. A report on databases in the United States describes that an additional protection of databases is needed as databases get more significant in terms of science and economy and become a key factor on Internet. At this moment, Korea does not recognize the importance of databases of science and technology when we look into any public or civil organizations. Accordingly this paper deals in depth with overall issues surrounding the regal protection of science and technology databases, key contents for science and technology databases protection by current laws, and additional protection problems. Considering that the industry of science and technology databases plays a pivotal role in the securement of national competitiveness, the preparation of legal measures to properly protect databases as one of the policies for the continuing development of databases should not be overlooked.

With the advances in multimedia databases on the World Wide Web, it becomes more important to provide users with the search capability of distributed multimedia data. While there have been many studies about the database selection and the collection fusion for text databases. The multimedia databases on the Web have autonomous and heterogeneous properties and they use mainly the content based retrieval. The collection fusion problem of multimedia databases is concerned with the merging of results retrieved by content based retrieval from heterogeneous multimedia databases on the Web. This problem is crucial for the search in distributed multimedia databases, however, it has not been studied yet. This paper provides novel algorithms for processing the collection fusion of heterogeneous multimedia databases on the Web. We propose two heuristic algorithms for estimating the number of objects to be retrieved from local databases and an algorithm using the linear regression. Extensive experiments show the effectiveness and efficiency of these algorithms. These algorithms can provide the basis for the distributed content based retrieval algorithms for multimedia databases on the Web.

As the use of open source databases grows, so does need to evaluate, the performance of search queries for these databases. This paper compares the search query performance of SQL-based open source databases with commercial databases through experiments. The targets are MySql, MariaDB, and MS-SQL Server. In this study, the execution time of various types of search queries are measured. Also, search query performance was experimented according to change of index and number of tuples. Experimental results show that SQL-based open source databases have the potential to replace commercial databases when indexes are used and the number of tuples is not very large.
One of the major issues in the implementation and maintenance of CIM databases is the sharing and exchange of information among the heterogeneous databases. This paper addresses some architectural aspects for integrating the heterogeneous multi-databases using knowledge-based expert systems. we propose a loosely integrated coupling system between databases and knowledge-based expert systems. Especially we suggest the architectural aspects of such a coupling methodology. we also present the structure and knowledge representation scheme for the proposed knowledge-based expert system. A prototype example is included to illustrate the framework and its mechanism for implementation.

Current states of Korean biographical databases are evaluated based on the dissatis faction factors identified by a user survey. currency, coverage, completeness, and variety of the Korean biographical databases are evaluated and compared with overseas biographical databases. The results of the analysis are given with problems and suggestions for the future improvements.
