Objectives : This study was to investigate the impact of dietary habits and obesity on level of oral health in the elementary school children and to characterize the relationship among dietary habits, obesity and level of oral health by DMFT index and perceived oral health. Methods : Participants were 314 total students from one elementary school who lived Yeosan. Self-administered questionnaires were given to the subjects from March 25 through May 12, 2008, to identify their the degree of dietary habits, perceived oral health. A trained investigator made an oral examination of them in natural light using a mirror and explorer to determine their DMFT index. We classified the subjects into Data were analyzed with T-test, one-way ANOVA, and Duncan's multiple range test, pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression using the SPSS WIN 12.0 program. Results : Regarding dietary habit, the subjects achieved a mean of 10.52${\pm}$3.80 out of a maximum 20 points. The DMFT index in the subject was 0.60${\pm}$2.03. The group of obesity by gender were 19.2% and 22.5%. Moreover, those who were children and had more severe level of obesity felt that their perceived oral health and DMFT index were higher. There was a significant assocciation of oral health among elementary school children with obesity. Conclusion : These results suggest that oral health behavioral and attitude, dietary habits and obesity influenced the level of oral health. Thus further research targeting to positive attitude toward effective management of childhood obesity combined with significant dietary habits, may lead to promotion of oral health.
The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of physical activity and sedentary life in metabolically healthy obesity(MHO) and metabolically unhealthy obesity(MUO). A total of 1585 middle-aged obesity men and women participated in this study. The subjects were divided to MHO(n=840) and MUO(n=745) by metabolic syndrome markers(National Cholesterol Education Program-Adult Treatment Panel III). We analyzed measurement data using t-test. As results, physical activity and exercise participant between group had not significant difference in men subjects. But, in women subjects, total physical activity volume and muscle strength exercise participant between group had a significant difference. In conclusion, we suggest that physical activity and exercise participant are important factors affecting health status in the same level of obesity women.
Purpose: This study was conducted to estimate the relationship between health behavior and follow-up needed for results of health examinations. Methods: The participants were 2,245 adults over age 19. Data from the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey VI-1 was used. Health behavior was defined as smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, hours of sleep and BMI. Those who needed follow-up care after a health examination were defined as having abnormal blood pressure, abnormal blood sugar, or abnormal blood cholesterol. Results: The proportion needing follow-up was 77.4%. The odds ratio (95%CI) for needing follow-up for blood pressure for men was 1.59 (1.18-2.15) with excessive alcohol consumption over one month, and 2.33 (1.73-3.13) with obesity, and for women, 3.55 (2.66-4.74) with obesity. For blood sugar in men it was 1.59 (1.18-2.15) with excessive alcohol consumption and 2.33 (1.73-3.13) with obesity, and for women, 3.55 (2.66-4.74) with obesity. For low HDL-C in men it was 0.53 (00.40-0.72) with excessive alcohol consumption and 2.39 (1.81-3.15) with obesity, and in women, 0.73 (0.57-0.94) with excessive alcohol consumption and 1.66 (1.29-2.14) with obesity. For high triglycerides it was 2.37 (1.42-2.39) with smoking and 2.34 (1.70-3.22) with obesity in men and in women, 1.51 (1.05-2.16) with obesity. Conclusions: The results of this study indicate that obesity is associated with high blood pressure, high blood sugar, low HDL-C, and high triglycerides.

Background: Musculoskeletal pain is associated with obesity; however, information on factors associated with pain in adults with obesity and severe obesity is limited. The purpose of this study was to assess the prevalence of musculoskeletal pain by site and intensity of pain and associated factors in individuals with severe obesity (body mass index ≥ 35.0 kg/㎡). Methods: Baseline data from the DieTBra Trial study evaluating pain symptoms in nine body regions over the last seven days using the Nordic Questionnaire on Musculoskeletal Symptoms and Numerical Pain Scale. The variables analyzed using multiple Poisson regression with hierarchical analysis were: sociodemographic, lifestyle, food consumption, clinical, and anthropometric, and the outcome was moderate and intense pain. Results: In 150 participants, there was a high prevalence of ankle and foot pain (68.7%), lower back pain (62.7%), pain in the knees (53.3%) and upper back pain (52.0%), with a predominance of intense pain. Factors associated with pain according to specific sites were: type 2 diabetes with hand/wrist pain; sedentary time with hip pain; insomnia with pain in the hip and knee; edema in the lower limbs with pain in the lower back and ankles/feet; degree of obesity with ankle/foot pain; and percentage of total fat with ankle/foot pain. Conclusions: There was a high prevalence of pain and intense pain in individuals with severe obesity and an association with clinical variables, the degree of obesity, and sedentary lifestyle.
Childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and adolescents in the last decade. Obese youth are more likely to have risk factors for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, insulin resistance, and metabolic syndrome. There is no single or simple solution to the childhood obesity epidemic, but to learn that obesity is closely related to lifestyle factors including poor fitness and physical inactivity as well as prolonged sitting time in conjunction with westernized dietary habits. In addition to a healthy and balanced diet, promotion of physical activity combined with carefully supervised resistance exercise training, and reduced screen time is a primary recommendation for the prevention and treatment of obesity in children and adolescents. This review provides evidence based data to support this multiple-step physical activity strategy as the most effective and preventive means against childhood obesity.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of childhood obesity on school adjustment and whether the effects were mediated by withdrawal. Using the 2015 Korea Welfare Panel Study data, this study conducted a hierarchical regression analysis to examine the mediating effects of withdrawal on the relationship between childhood obesity and school adjustment. In addition, a Sobel test was used to consider the statistical significance of the mediating effects. Findings were as follows: First, childhood obesity had a negative influence on school adjustment. Second, childhood obesity affected withdrawal positively. Third. withdrawal had a negative impact on school adjustment. Fourth, withdrawal was found to partially mediate the relationship between childhood obesity and school adjustment. Based on the results, implications were discussed to intervene in preventing childhood obesity and to reduce the negative effects of childhood obesity.
Purpose: Obesity affects dysfunction of Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Ovary(H-P-O) axis. Dysfunction of H-P-O axis could be related to Skin Resistance Variability (SRV). This study investigated the impacts of obesity which related to female age on SRV. Methods: We randomly selected 400 women who had taken CP-6000A test and InBody test on the same day at Oriental Hospital of Sangji University from Jan. 2008 to Jun. 2011. In this study, the Body Mass Index(BMI) range of normal group is 18.5~24.9, obesity group is over 25, the age range of childbearing age group is 24~34 years, post-menopause group is 50~65 years. 139 women that met the criteria of this study were assorted by their BMI and age. After detection of SRV, SPSS 19.0 has conjugated for data analysis and the independent samples t-test and paired samples t-test were used to verify the results. Results: At 1st and 2nd trial, the height of 3 area of childbearing age obesity group was significantly higher than that of childbearing age normal group. At 1st and 2nd trial, the height of 1, 2 area of childbearing age obesity group was higher than that of childbearing age normal group, but there were no significant difference. At 1st and 2nd trial, the height of 1, 2, 3 area of post-menopause obesity group was mostly higher than that of post-menopause normal group, but there were no significant difference. Conclusions: This study showed the SRV of obesity group was higher than that of normal group in most of 1, 2, 3 area. Further study will be needed.
Background: Obesity and dental caries have common risk factors such as food intake, eating habits, and lifestyle. Nevertheless, there has been no consensus on the significant association between obesity and dental caries, and additional studies are needed. We investigated the relationship between obesity and dental caries in some college students in this pilot study. Methods: Forty-two obese college students (body mass index [BMI]≥25) registered at a University Obesity Clinic and 19 normal students (18.5≤BMI<25) were recruited. Oral examinations were conducted, and anthropometric data and blood samples were collected. The blood concentrations of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein, and triglyceride were also measured. After controlling for dental plaque index, a univariate analysis of dental caries indicators related to obesity was performed; partial correlation analysis was also conducted. A nonparametric test was used for the analysis of gender-related trends due to the limited number of participants. Results: The obese group had significantly fewer missing teeth (p=0.014), missing surfaces (p=0.035), filled surfaces (p=0.038), and decayed-missing-filled surfaces (p=0.020) than the normal group. There was no difference between the males in the normal and obese groups. The females in the obese group had significantly fewer missing teeth (p=0.003), missing surfaces (p=0.003), and decayed-missing-filled surfaces (p=0.046). Partial correlation analysis showed a weak negative correlation (r=-0.256) between the blood LDL concentration and decayed-missing-filled teeth. The other obesity and dental caries indicators were not correlated. Conclusion:The blood cholesterol concentration had a negative relationship with dental caries, and there were fewer cases of dental caries in the obese group in this study. However, it is important to clarify the relationship between obesity and dental caries through a dietary survey or additional investigations considering other confounding factors.
Objectives The purpose of this study is to review the current Sasang constitutional research on obesity and to provide basic data for further development in the direction of better research. Methods Clinical research articles on obesity of the Sasang Constitutional Medicine were extracted from five database. Published year, published journals, and subjects of studies were classified. Clinical methods for the classification of Sasang type and diagnostic criteria for obesity were summarized. Results A total of 36 selected research articles were published from 1998 to 2020. And 20 articles(55.6%) have been published in Journal of Sasang Constitutional Medicine and Journal of Oriental Rehabilitation Medicine. Most of the clinical study subjects were studies that identified independent factors that were correlated with obesity by Sasang constitution type. But these studies have not sufficiently reflected the distinctive characteristics of Sasang Constitution Medicine. Discussion Through this study, it was confirmed to the necessity of developing new research designs for obesity by Sasang constitution and researching on obesity treatment through improvement of symptoms by using the already developed questionnaires that have proven reliability and validity, away from the research biased towards Taeeumin and Taeeumin's prescription. If additional research based on this study is accompanied, it is expected that it can be utilized in typed obesity treatment fields.

Objectives: Obesity is a chronic metabolic disease that negatively affects quality of life and health. It is associated with various disease and its prevalence is on the rise. Although various treatments for obesity are used, they have several adverse effects. Pharmacoacupuncture is a widely used method for treating various diseases and has the advantage of having fewer adverse effects. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluate the efficacy of pharmacoacupuncture in treating obesity. Methods: Eight electronic databases were searched from their inception to August 2023. Only randomized controlled trials were included in this review. Intervention groups included pharmacoacupuncture. Control groups had no limitation. The primary outcome was body mass index (BMI), and the secondary outcomes were body weight (BW), waist circumference (WC), and adverse effects. Continuous outcome data were presented as mean differences (MD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results: Four randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving 139 participants were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. Results revealed that BMI ((MD)=-0.98, 95% CI -1.84 to -0.11, Z=2.22, P=0.03, I2=0%), WC (MD=-4.29, 95% CI -7.51 to -1.08, Z=2.62, P=0.009, I2=38%) were significantly improved in the intervention groups compared to control groups. Adverse effects were reported in two studies. Conclusions: This systematic review and meta-analysis suggests that pharmacoacupuncture is an effective and safe therapy for simple obesity. Further detailed studies should be conducted on effects of pharmacoacupuncture for obesity to increase reliability.
