Formal Models and Algorithms for XML Data Interoperability

  • In this paper, we study the data interoperability problem of web services in terms of XML schema compatibility. When Web Service A sends XML messages to Web Service B, A is interoperable with B if B can accept all messages from A. That is, the XML schema R for B to receive XML instances must be compatible with the XML schema S for A to send XML instances, Le., A is a subschema of B. We propose a formal model called Schema Automaton (SA) to model W3C XML Schema (XSD) and develop several algorithms to perform different XML schema computations. The computations include schema minimization, schema equivalence testing, subschema testing, and subschema extraction. We have conducted experiments on an e-commerce standard XSD called xCBL to demonstrate the practicality of our algorithms. One experiment has refuted the claim that the xCBL 3.5 XSD is backward compatible with the xCBL 3.0 XSD. Another experiment has shown that the xCBL XSDs can be effectively trimmed into small subschemas for specific applications, which has significantly reduced the schema processing time.

  • Recently, various researches have been attempted to connect or integrate BIM handling construction data and GIS handling spatial data. However, it is hard to interoperate by integration between two data models because characteristics and domains of data models between BIM and GIS are very different. In this research, we propose the platform to secure efficient interoperability between BIM and GIS and define the component technologies and functions of the platform proposed in this research by analyzing the existing commercial softwares.

  • Ship STEP is the international standard for the exchange of ship modeling data between heterogeneous systems. It is expected that STEP AP218 can be used for seamless data exchange between various CAD/CAM/CAE systems used in the shipbuilding design process. Although the conformance assessment for standards would maximize the performance and confidence about data exchanges, most research has been directed toward interoperability testing. ISO SC4/TC184 only provides the method for conformance testing, and it can be used with test cases on application protocols. Even though standards have been defined for conformance assessment and testing, there is no organization or association. CAD vendors have focused on interoperability testing for evaluation of the performance of their systems. In this paper, the conformance testing criteria for AP218 have been developed with abstract test cases of ship structures. The requested STEP translator was also reviewed with a developed item pool of testing criteria. The criteria methodology would be a guideline for the development of translators and interfaces. The item pool method of testing criteria for conformance assessment would increase performance and efficiency of data translators for Ship STEP and other standards.

  • In this paper, for the purpose of improving the future domestic train control systems and securing interoperability according to the global development trends of train control systems, we present the test results of communication interfaces to verify the interoperability between CBTC wayside units tentatively installed in Bundang line that is one of the metropolitan area rail transit systems, and the CBTC onboard units developed through the national R/D project. The CBTC onboard equipment developed, has finished its installation and trial tests in the Bundang shunting yard. For the interoperability test, we should make an interface test with wayside equipment tentatively installed in Bundang line. Due to the safety-critical characteristics of train systems, the site test in the section where the wayside equipment is installed, leads to a danger against safety. Therefore, by way of constructing a simulation environment of train control systems, we confirm the T/R data systems of the equipment for interoperability and test the interoperability by applying these systems to developed CBTC onboard equipment.

Design of an Algorithm for the Validation of SCL in Digital Substations

  • The substation is a critical node in the power network where power is transformed in the power generation, transmission and distribution system. The IEC 61850 is a global standard which proposes efficient substation automation by defining interoperable communication and data modelling techniques. In order to achieve this level of interoperability and automation, the IEC 61850 (Part 6) defines System Configuration description Language (SCL). The SCL is an XML based file format for defining the abstract model of primary and secondary substation equipment, communications systems and also the relationship between them. It enables the interoperable exchange of data during substation engineering by standardizing the description of applications at different stages of the engineering process. To achieve the seamless interoperability, multi-vendor devices are required to adhere completely to the IEC 61850. This paper proposes an efficient algorithm required for verifying the interoperability of multi-vendor devices by checking the adherence of the SCL file to specifications of the standard. Our proposed SCL validation algorithm consists of schema validation and other functionalities including information model validation using UML data model, the Vendor Defined Extension model validation, the User Defined Rule validation and the IED Engineering Table (IET) consistency validation. It also integrates the standard UCAIUG (Utility Communication Architecture International Users Group) Procedure validation for quality assurance testing. Our proposed algorithm is not only flexible and efficient in terms of ensuring interoperable functionality of tested devices, it is also convenient for use by system integrators and test engineers.

Evaluation of Knowledge Graph for Interoperating Digital Records (디지털 기록의 상호운용을 위한 지식그래프의 평가)

  • A digital archive is an online platform for preserving and utilizing digital records worthy of continued preservation. However, there are no shared standards for functionality, metadata, or data technical principles across digital archives in Korea. These issues create challenges in linking distributed digital records. This study proposes a common vocabulary for digital archives to enhance the interoperability of digital records and evaluates the interoperability of the digital archive built with the common vocabulary. We collect and analyze data from the digital archive on the Korean financial crisis of 1997 to construct a knowledge graph and compare its interoperability with the knowledge graph built with RiC-O. The archive and the knowledge graph underwent evaluation using the FAIR data principles evaluation framework. The constructed knowledge graph links various objects in the archive and provides contextual information to aid in understanding the archive. The results demonstrate that a knowledge graph built with a common vocabulary significantly improves the linkage, search, and interoperability of digital records compared to a traditional archive.

Web-Enabler: Transformation of Conventional HIMS Data to Semantics Structure Using Hadoop MapReduce

  • Objective: Data exchange, interoperability, and access as a service in healthcare information management systems (HIMS) is the basic need to provision health-services. Data existing in various HIMS not only differ in the basic underlying structure but also in data processing systems. Data interoperability can only be achieved when following a common structure or standard which is shareable such as semantics based structures. We propose web-enabler: A Hadoop MapReduce based distributed approach to transform the existing huge variety data in variety formats to a conformed and flexible ontological format that enables easy access to data, sharing, and providing various healthcare services. Results: For proof of concept, we present a case study of general patient record in conventional system to be enabled for analysis on the web by transforming to semantics based structure. Conclusion: This work achieves transformation of stale as well as future data to be web-enabled and easily available for analytics in healthcare systems.

Fully connecting the Observational Health Data Science and Informatics (OHDSI) initiative with the world of linked open data

  • The usage of controlled biomedical vocabularies is the cornerstone that enables seamless interoperability when using a common data model across multiple data sites. The Observational Health Data Science and Informatics (OHDSI) initiative combines over 100 controlled vocabularies into its own. However, the OHDSI vocabulary is limited in the sense that it combines multiple terminologies and does not provide a direct way to link them outside of their own self-contained scope. This issue makes the tasks of enriching feature sets by using external resources extremely difficult. In order to address these shortcomings, we have created a linked data version of the OHDSI vocabulary, connecting it with already established linked resources like bioportal, bio2rdf, etc. with the ultimate purpose of enabling the interoperability of resources previously foreign to the OHDSI universe.

  • The utilization of Building Information Modeling (BIM) has increased in order to enhance the integration of information for management and resources throughout the construction projects. Therefore, various BIM softwares have been used under open BIM environments in the building and plant construction industry. However, it has obstructive factors due to the lack of interoperability. In order to address this problem, this study conducted an interoperability analysis of BIM software focused on user-defined properties for enhanced function and efficiency. Result of the analysis shows that authoring tools have more interoperability problems than viewer tools and simulation tools have. In terms of interoperability, user-defined properties outperforms than those of system basic properties and logic data. Therefore, it was found that functional improvement and workload minimization in BIM can be attained by applying the GBS (an user-defined property for automatic manipulation of BIM proposed by Jung et al. 2013) that enables automatic link between geometric data and non-geometric data. In this respect, this study concludes that the application of user-defined property (e.g. GBS) can be an effective method for information integration throughout construction projects.

  • Currently operated many information systems are faced up with various difficulties to exchange data and to cooperate between different systems because the factors, such as data exchangibility and system interoperability, are not considered during the system development from scratch. To overcome these problems, we attempt to apply e-Government Grid to resolve the heterogeneity of systems and propose Government Information Metadata Registry (GIMDR) for assurance of interoperability of distributed and independent information systems in e-government environments. Consequently, the case study is introduced to provide the seamless connection between distributed systems. The proposed e-Government Grid and GIMDR are expected to reduce the heterogeneity of the distributed systems for interoperability, as well as increase the accessability and transparency of cooperating information.
