Experiments were conducted to find out the method of reducing viviparous germination of rice seeds using growth regulators during grain filling period. Among the recommended varieties, early Japonica type showed higher rate of viviparous germination, while late Japonica type and Tongil type varieties did not show viviparous germination in field condition. Grain showed high germination ability from 30 days of grain filling period in Daeseongbyeo of Japonica type and 35 days in Taebackbyeo of Tongil type. Growth regulators, NAA, CMH and Reglone were effective for reducing viviparous germination to the two rice varieties and three treatment stages in this experiment. NAA and CMH were most effective at 100 ppm and Reglone was at 0.4-0.6% concentration. Germination rates of rice seed were not different from non-treatment when NAA CMH were treated, while Reglone lowered germination rate. NAA and CMH had no effects on grain filling rate for both varieties, which showed high grain filling rate as the non-treatment, but Reglone results low grain filling rate. Grain color was not changes when NAA was applied, while CMH and Reglone made a lot of grain to dark brown as the concentration became higher. When grain were hulled, NAA had no difference with the non-treatment whereas CMH and Reglone had lower rate of perfect brown rice when they were applied at 20-30 days after heading.
The Merit variety of soybean (Glycine max L.), harvested in 1971 was germinated in the dark at $21{\sim}25^{\circ}C$ for days. The soybean sprouts were divided into cotyledons and seedling axis (=hypocotlyplus root) and subjected to the determination of dry weight, crude fat content and lipid components (esterified sterols, triglycerides, free fatty acids, free sterols and phospholipids) at two-day intervals during the germination periods. The results are summarized as follows: 1) During the germination period, the dry weight and crude fat content in cotyledons decreased continuously, but the dry weight seedling axis increased continuously and crude fat content remained almost constent. 2) The triglyceride content in crude fat from cotyledons decreased and free fatty acid content increased continuously, but triglyceride content in crude fat from seedling axis showed no change until 6th day and increased slightly after 8th day, and free fatty acid content showed increase after 4th day and decrease after 6th day. Phospholipids, free and esterified sterols content in cotyledons increased continuously, but their content in seedling axis remained unchanged.
Effects of incubation temperature and pH on chlamydospore germination of Cylindrocarpon destrcutans (isolate CY-9802) causing root rot of Panax ginseng were studied. Germination rate of the chlamydospores on Czapek solution agar(CSA) was higher than on potato dextrose agar(PDA) at the incubation temperatures tested. The chlamydospores were able to be germinated at range of 5$\^{C}$ to 30$\^{C}$ after 48 hours incubation on CSA. Germination rate was 53.2∼6.27% at range of 15$\^{C}$ to 25$\^{C}$, and the optimum temperature was 20$\^{C}$, whereas they were very low at 30$\^{C}$ on PDA. Germination rate was 43.6% to 47.9% at range of 10$\^{C}$ to 20$\^{C}$, and the optimum temperature was 20$\^{C}$ as well. They were able to be germinated at pH of 5.2 to 8.1 on CSA and 5.2 to 7.2 on PDA. Optimum pHs for the germination on CSA and PDA were from 6.4 to 8.2 and from 5.2 to 6.0, respectively. Mycelial color of the fungus on CSA was pale brown at pH from 5.2 to 6.0 and white from pH 6.4 to 8.1, while it was typical dark brown ar range of pH 5.2 to 7.1 and brown at pH 7.2 on PDA after 21 days incubation.
Dormancy of intact zoysiagrass seeds hinders its seed propagation in which presowing seed treatment must be done to overcome it. The study was done to remodel the presowing treatments of zoysiagrass seeds by determining the treatment effects of seedcoat softening, prechilling, drying and combined light treatment with them or during germination stage. Seedcoat softening with different chemicals (NaOH 20%, KOH 20%, $H_2SO_4\;8M, acetone 20%) and periods (10, 30, 60 min.), prechilling with different periods at 3$^{\circ}C$, and drying with 4 hours at 35$^{\circ}C$ was done. Light sources were also applied with 660 nm red LED light, commercial fluorescent and incandescent light and darkness. Germination test was done in alternative day and night temperature of 35 and 2$0^{\circ}C$ to check the daily germination rates. With seeds treated with NaOH 20% for 30 minutes, red and incandescent light showing similar responses inclined their germination rates compared to dark conditions. Drying resulted in its higher rate than non-drying but fluorescent light treatment forced during drying more enhanced the rate than red light. While mean germination rate considering all the seedcoat softening treatment periods was the greatest in $H_2SO_4$ in comparison with NaOH, KOH and acetone, NaOH treatment for 30 minutes showed the best rate among the all the treatment levels. In the conditions of sowing them to no-mulching field, presowing treatment procedure of zoysiagrass seeds was remodeled: the seedcoat softening treatment with NaOH 20% for 30 minutes was done, washed, and chilled at 3$^{\circ}C$ for 2 weeks before dried under 4 hour fluorescent light illumination at 35$^{\circ}C$.
Chilean wild flower seeds showed low germination rate and lacked germination uniformity. This experiment was conducted to find out the effects of light conditions, $GA_3$ (50 mg/L, 100 mg/L, 200 mg/L) and $KNO_3$ (0.1%, 0.2%, 0.4%) treatments on germination of five species of Chilean wild flower seeds. The seeds of $Schizanthus$$candidus$, $Schizanthus$$hookerii$, and $Schizanthus$$litoralis$ did not germinated in light condition. The others did not show a significant different germination rate under light and dark conditions. The germination rate of $Mimulus$$luteus$, $Schizanthus$$candidus$, $Schizanthus$$hookerii$ increased 2.3, 5.6, and 3.2 times compared with control, respectively in $GA_3$-200 mg/L treatment, but that of $Rhodophiala$$ananuca$ enhanced slightly in $GA_3$-50 mg/L treatment. Those results suggested that the germination rate of Chilean wild flower seeds enhanced by $GA_3$ treatment that is very efficient in breaking seed dormancy.

This study was carried out to establish seed propagation method of Hydrangea petiolaris Siebold & Zucc., one of the specific and protected plant species for the floral region. Seed size ranged $1.36{\times}0.84mm$, weight of thousand seeds was $2.3{\pm}0.02mg$. Observation of seed morphology characters showed wrinkled surface and elliptical shape, indicating amber color and fine seeds. Moisture contents of seeds, increased rapidly by water-soaking treatment, recording maximum moisture contents (31.9%) after 48 hours. Percent germination of seeds was higher under the light than dark condition. Seed germination was the best at $25^{\circ}C$ under the light condition (78.0%) among temperature and light conditions treated. Percent germination, germination energy and $T_{50}$ was greatly improved by soaking in $GA_3$ solutions for 48 hours. Especially, $100{\sim}500mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$$GA_3$ treatment resulted in the highest germination rate as 90.0% and above.
In this experiment, interactions between light and other factors such as chilling, alternating temperature, moisture, content, oxygen, and seed coat which affect germination of Oenothera lamarckiana Ser. seed were investigated to study the physiological effects of light on the germination. Light induced the initial stage of seed germination before radical protrusion by affecting embryo rather than seed coat even under anaerobic condition or low water potential (-18 bars). This light effect on germinability of seed was suppressed by blue light irradiation and the effect was increased with increment of blue light intensity and irradiation time. However, the blue light effect was reversible. Chilling, alternating temperature, softening of seed coat and light showed promotive interaction in the induction of seed germination. Irradiation of filtered light (monochrome), however, reduced chilling effect on germination. Hydrogen-ion concentration and gibberellic acid treatment had no effect on light or dark germination.
Research was conducted to investigate germination and establishment characteristics of five fescue species. Alternative conditions of 8-hr light at $25^{\circ}C$ and 16-hr dark at $15^{\circ}C$ were applied. Significant differences were observed in seed germination power, germination speed and germination peak time. Germination power was 62.25% in CRF 'Audubon' to 96.75% in TF 'Olympic Gold'. It was greater with TF over FF, being TF > HF > SF > CF > CRF. Germination speed, measured as days to seed germination of 50% through 80%, was fastest with TF, medium with CF and HF, and slowest with CRF and SF, being TF > CF, HF > CRF, SF. Germination peak time was much faster with TF over FF. It ranged from 0.94 to 1.47 days with TF. But it varied with 2.80 to 12.36 days among FF species. The peak time was longer in order of HF, SF < CF < CRF. Considering germination power, germination speed and germination peak time, TF 'Arid III' was the best cultivar under alternative conditions, while CRF 'Audubon' the poorest. Overall establishment characteristics among Festuca species were even better with TF over FF in order of TF > CF, HF > SF > CRF.

Rhododendron mucronulatum for. albiflorum, native species is a shrub that has white flowers on May to June, and rare species endangered by people's rash digging or cutting. But its physiological ecological characteristics and propagation method are not being known at all. Therefore, this study was executed to utilize this species as the planting material for landscaping by analysing its habitat environment and growth form, and also experimenting its seed and vegetative propagation, and it field culture and utilization. The results are as follows; 1. The elevation, gradient and direction of this species were 295-1,350m, 10-36$^{\circ}$, northwest respectively. It was found that the species is shade-liking plant that grows under forest cover of average 51.33%. 2. The soil pH and water content of its habitat were 5.4, 25.41% respectively. The organic matter content was 6.29% that was higher than 3.2%, the average organic matter content of forest soil in Korea. 3. Representative plant community within which this species was living was Quercus mongolica community, and its main neighboring species were Lindea obtusiloba, Fraxinus sieboldiana, Rhus trichocarpa, Rhododendron Schlippenbachii, Rododendron mucronulatum. 4. The leaf length and width of this species were 39.18mm, 12.60mm respectively. This result showed that generally its leaf size was larger than that of R. micranthum, R. yedoense var. poukhanense and R. mucronulatum var. ciliatum and smaller than that of R. mucronulatum and R. schlippenbachii. 5. The whole size of its pollen was, as 59${\times}$61$\mu\textrm{m}$, the largest of plants of Rhododendron family including R. mucronulatum and R. mucronulatum var. ciliatum. 6. The result of seed germination experiment at intervals of 5$^{\circ}C$ from 15$^{\circ}C$ to 30$^{\circ}C$ presented the highest germination rate of 94.7% at 20$^{\circ}C$ numerically, but high percent germination at all temperature levels without significant difference. And the seed of this plant proved to be sun-liking seed at requiring dormancy in germination. 7. Through seed germination experiment by treatment of growth regulators such as GA. Thiourea and Kinetin under dark condition, it was found that the effect of GA treatment on germination increase and acceleration was the highest. 8. In greenwood cutting, rooted rate by treatment of various concentration of IBA and NAA on clay and vermiculite bed was not wholly high, but 100ppm plots of both IBA and NAA of clay bed showed relatively good rooted rate. 9. As result of field culture experiment for finding out optimum growth temperature and light intensity, growth conditions such as height, number of leaves, fresh weight and chlorophyll contents were the best at night/day temperature of 20/25$^{\circ}C$ and under 1/2sun. Also, the photosynthetic rate was the highest at 25$^{\circ}C$. Accordingly, it was found that optimum temperature and light intensity for growth of this plant are 25$^{\circ}C$ (day temperature), 50% of natural light respectively.
Campanulaceae having the most growing areas among medicinal crops cultivated in Korea occasionally failed to establish a reasonable standing in practice. The experiment was carried out to examine the effect of prechilling (0 : 4 : 8 days), light quality (red : white : dark) and daily irradiation hours (8 : 12 : 16) after sowing on seed germination and radicle elongation of Campanulaceae (Platycodon grandiflorum : Codonopsis lanceolata : C. pjlosula) to give an information on their earlier standing establishment. Mean germination rate of P. grandiflorum was the highest but that of C. pilosula was the lowest regardless of all the treatments. 12 hours irradiation or prechilling increased to 8 days enhanced their earlier or later germination, respectively. White light increased the rate of P. grandiflorum but alleviated that of C. lanceolata regardless of the daily irradiation hours. Although prechilling eliminated such effect of white light, light quality treatment effect on their mean germination rates was influenced by period after sowing, daily irradiation hours or prechilling. On the 9th day after sowing, C. lanceolata showed the greatest radicle length, and both daily 8 hours irradiation and 8 days prechilling enforced to elongate their radicles, while P. grandjflorum and C. lanceolata more lengthened their radicles in all prechilling treatments than in no chilling but C. pilosula showed the similar result only in the 8 days prechilling.
