  • We present the discovery of rare active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in nearby (z<0.05) compact elliptical galaxies (cEs) located in isolated environments. Using spectroscopic data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 12, four AGNs were identified based on the optical emission-line diagnostic diagram. SDSS optical spectra of AGNs show the presence of distinct narrow-line emissions. Utilizing the black hole (BH) mass-stellar velocity dispersion scaling relation and the correlation between the narrow L([OIII])/L(Hβ) line ratio and the width of the broad Hα emission line, we estimated the BH masses of the cEs to be in the range of 7×105-8×107 solar mass. The observed surface brightness profiles of the cEs were fitted with a double Sérsic function using the Dark Energy Camera Legacy Survey r-band imaging data. Assuming the inner component as the bulge, the K-band bulge luminosity was also estimated from the corresponding Two Micron All Sky Survey images. We found that our cEs follow the observed BH mass-stellar velocity dispersion and BH mass-bulge luminosity scaling relations, albeit there was a large uncertainty in the derived BH mass of one cE. In view of the observational properties of BHs and those of the stellar populations of cEs, we discuss the proposition that cEs in isolated environments are bona fide low-mass early-type galaxies (i.e., a nature origin).

  • Supernova (SN) cosmology is based on the assumption that the width-luminosity relation (WLR) in the type Ia SN luminosity standardization would not vary with progenitor age. Unlike this expectation, recent age datings of stellar populations in host galaxies have shown significant correlations between progenitor age and Hubble residual (HR). It was not clear, however, how this correlation arises from the SN luminosity standardization process, and how this would impact the cosmological result. Here we show that this correlation originates from a strong progenitor age dependence of the WLR and color-luminosity relation (CLR), in the sense that SNe from younger progenitors are fainter each at given light-curve parameters x1 and c. This is reminiscent of Baade's discovery of two Cepheid period-luminosity relations, and, as such, causes a serious systematic bias with redshift in SN cosmology. We illustrate that the differences between the high-z and low-z SNe in the WLR and CLR, and in HR after the standardization, are fully comparable to those between the correspondingly young and old SNe at intermediate redshift, indicating that the observed dimming of SNe with redshift is most likely an artifact of over-correction in the luminosity standardization. When this systematic bias with redshift is properly taken into account, there is no evidence left for an accelerating universe, and the SN data now support a decelerating cosmic expansion. Since the SN cosmology has long been considered as the most direct evidence for an accelerating universe with dark energy, this finding poses a serious question to one of the cornerstones of the concordance model.

  • Gravitationally lensed Type Ia supernovae may be the next frontier in cosmic probes, able to deliver independent constraints on dark energy, spatial curvature, and the Hubble constant. Measurements of time delays between the multiple images become more incisive due to the standardized candle nature of the source, monitoring for months rather than years, and partial immunity to microlensing. While currently extremely rare, hundreds of such systems should be detected by upcoming time-domain surveys. Others will have the images spatially unresolved, with the observed lightcurve a superposition of time delayed image fluxes. We investigate whether unresolved images can be recognized as lensed sources given only lightcurve information and whether time delays can be extracted robustly. We develop a method that we show can identify these systems for the case of lensed Type Ia supernovae with two images and time delays exceeding ten days. When tested on such an ensemble the method achieves a false positive rate of ≲5%, and measures the time delays with the completeness of ≳93% and with a bias of ≲0.5% for time delay ≳10 days. Since the method does not assume a template of any particular type of SN, the method has the potential to work on other types of lensed SNe systems and possibly on other transients.

  • In the last decades, the use of type Ia supernovae (SN) as standard candles has allowed us to understand the geometry of the Universe as they help to measure the expansion rate of the Universe, especially in combination with other cosmological probes such as the study of cosmic microwave background radiation anisotropies or the study of the imprint of baryonic acoustic oscillations on the galaxy clustering. Cosmological parameter constraints obtained with type Ia SN are mainly affected by intrinsic systematic errors. But there are other systematic effects related with the correlation of the observed brightness of Supernova and the large-scale structure of the Universe such as the effect of peculiar velocities and gravitational lensing. The former is relevant for SN at low redshifts while the latter starts being relevant for SN at higher redshifts. Gravitational lensing depends on how much matter is along the trajectory of each SN light beam. In order to account for this effect, we consider a statistical approach by defining the probability distribution (PDF) that a given supernova brightness is magnified by a given amount, for a particular redshift. We will show that different theoretical approaches to define the matter density along the light trajectory hugely affect the shape and width of the PDF. This may have catastrophic effects on cosmology fits using Supernova lensing as planned for surveys such as the Dark Energy Survey or future surveys such the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope.

  • Organic dyes, because of their many advantages, such as high molar extinction coefficients, convenience of customized molecular design for desired photophysical and photochemical properties, inexpensiveness with no transition metals contained, and environment-friendliness, are suitable as photosensitizers for the Dye-sensitized Solar Cell (DSSC). The efficiency of DSSC based on metal-free organic dyes is known to be much lower than that of Ru dyes generally, but a high solar energy-to-electricity conversion efficiency of up to 8% in full sunlight has been achieved by Ito et al. using an indoline dye. This result suggests that smartly designed and synthesized metal-free organic dyes are also highly competitive candidates for photosensitizers of DSSCs with their advantages mentioned above. Recently, the performance of DSSC based on metal-free organic dyes has been remarkably improved by several groups. We had reported the novel organic dye with double electron acceptor chromophore, which was a new strategy to design an efficient photosensitizer for DSSC. To verify the strategy, we synthesized organic dyes whose geometries, electronic structures and optical properties were derived from preceding density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations. In this paper, we successfully synthesized the chromophore containing multi-acceptor push-pull system from triphenylamine with thiophene moieties as a bridge unit. Organic dyes with a single electron acceptor and double acceptor system were also synthesized for comparison purposes. The photovoltaic performances of these dyes were compared, and the recombination dark current curves and the incident photon-to-current (IPCE) efficiencies were also measured in order to characterize the effects of the multi-anchoring groups on the open-circuit voltage and the short-circuit current. In order to match specifications required for practical applications to be implemented outdoors, light soaking and thermal stability tests of these DSSCs, performed under $100mWcm^{-2}$ and $60^{\circ}C$ for 1000h.

  • Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have attracted considerable attention on account of their high solar energy-to-conversion efficiencies and low cost processes compared to conventional p-n junction solar cells. The mechanism of DSSC is based on the injection of electrons from the photo excited dyes into the conduction band of the semiconductor electrode. The oxidized dye is reduced by the hole injection into either the hole conductor or the electrolyte. Thus, the light harvesting effect of dye plays an important role in capturing the photons and generating the electron/hole pair, as well as transferring them to the interface of the semiconductor and the electrolyte, respectively. We used the organic fluorescence materials which can absorb short wavelength light and emit longer wavelength region where dye sensitize effectively. In this work, the DSSCs were fabricated with fluorescence materials added $TiO_2$ photo-electrode which were sensitized with metal-free organic dyes. The photovoltaic performances of fluorescence aided DSSCs were compared, and the recombination dark current curves and the incident photon-to-current (IPCE) efficiencies were measured in order to characterize the effects of the additional light harvesting effect in DSSC. Electro-optical measurements were also used to optimize the fluorescence material contents on TiO2 photo-electrode surface for higher conversion efficiency (${\eta}$), fill factor (FF), open-circuit voltage (VOC) and short-circuit current (ISC). The enhanced light harvesting effect by the judicious choice/design of the fluorescence materials and sensitizing dyes permits the enhancement of photovoltaic performance of DSSC.

  • It is possble to study charge transfer property which is caused by height variation because we can see the organic materials barrier height and STM tip by organic materials energy band gap. Here, we investigated the negative differential resistance(NDR) and charge transfer property of self-assembled 4,4-Di(ethynylphenyl)-2'-nitro-1-(thioacetyl)benzene, which has been well known as a conducting molecule. Self-assembly monolayers(SAMs) were prepared on Au(111), which had been thermally deposited onto pre-treatment($H_{2}SO_{4}:H_{2}O_{2}$=3:1) Si. The Au substrate was exposed to a 1 mM/l solution of 1-dodecanethiol in ethanol for 24 hours to form a monolayer. After thorough rinsing the sample, it was exposed to a $0.1{\mu}M/1$ solution of 4,4-Di(ethynylphenyl)-2'-nitro-1-(thioacetyl)benzene in dimethylformamide(DMF) for 30 min and kept in the dark during immersion to avoid photo-oxidation. After the assembly, the samples were removed from the solutions, rinsed thoroughly with methanol, acetone, and $CH_{2}Cl_{2}$, and finally blown dry with $N_2$. Under these conditions, we measured electrical properties of self-assembly monolayers(SAMs) using ultra high vacuum scanning tunneling microscopy(UHV-STM). The applied voltages were from -1.50 V to -1.20 V with 298 K temperature. The vacuum condition is $6{\times}10^{-8}$ Torr. As a result, we found that NDR and charge transfer property by a little change of height when the voltage is applied between STM tip and electrode.

  • For the office work environmental design, the importance of the design management is increased to improve operation efficiency as well as the aesthetic environmental implementation of the function today. Lighting is a required element ineffective operation environment. It has become more important for the aesthetic, economic, and practical reasons, to consider the luminous environment and the lighting of visual tasks separately. When the brightness is insufficient, productivity deteriorates, and the layout of the lighting located by mistake causes the fatigue of eyes. Productivity rises to office in a large number of studies so as satisfaction is low in general in the dark office, and to be bright. Therefore the purpose of this research is to suggest the right direction of lighting design of office building area. 11newly renovated office buildings are selected for this luminous environment research. We could conclusions as following through this research. First, it was planned brighter than the recommended lighting level in the most space. It shows that the accurate lighting design criteria is needed in order to achieve proper lighting environment. Second, the application of the LED lighting fixtures is continuously increased in the recent office lighting environment. It is explained that it is applied for reasons of the electrical energy reduction and the maintenance efficiency with the long life time. Third, the consideration of the lighting plan for the difference of working types is not enough. with various communication configuration through an independent plan, and the effective lighting plan that appropriateness preparation design and energy saving area vailable must be applied. Fourth, the lighting environment of the lobby needs a specialized lighting plan as are presentative space of the building.

  • The shelf-life of instant noodle stored at $35{\sim}65^{\circ}C$ under dark condition was estimated from the change of hexanal content, which was linearly increased as the storage time increased. The rate constants of hexanal production at various storage temperatures followed Arrhenius relationship. The activation energy and $Q_{10}$ calculated were 12.7 kcal/mole and 1.92, respectively. The rancid flavor was organoleptically detected after 6 days at $65^{\circ}C$ and 13 days $50^{\circ}C$, at which the content of hexanal was 3.5 ppm. The shelf-life of instant noddle at $21^{\circ}C$ based on $Q_{10}$ value of hexanal production was about 110 days. The changes of acid value and peroxide value of instant noodle during storage followed similar pattern to those of hexanal. The activation energy and $Q_{10}$ for both acid value and peroxide value were 16.0 kcal/mole and 2.55, respectively. The hexanal content showed a high positive correlation with acid value as well as peroxide value at all storage temperatures.
