Damping of multi-span tube with loose supports according to the finite support clearances is investigated through the experimental modal analysis. Loose intermediate support leads to strong nonlinearity in tube dynamics, provides statistical nature, and increases tube damping through impacting and friction at the supports. Fraction of critical damping was estimated by the modal curve fitting to parameter estimation from the measured frequency response functions. Magnitude of random excitation force, which can reproduce the in-situ excitation in operating environment, was maintained as constant value with a fine tolerance during vibration testing. Range of input force was carefully selected to cover from the low magnitude excitation for linearly behaved tube motion to high magnitude of force for nonlinearly-behaved tube motion. Estimated critical damping ratio shows scatters in data and tends to increase as the magnitude of rising force and decrease with upward frequency variation. Larger size of support gap increases multi-span tube damping for high magnitude of excitation.

It is of great significance to utilize a landing mechanism to explore an asteroid. A landing mechanism named ALISE (Asteroid Landing and In Situ Exploring) for asteroid with soft surface is presented. The landing dynamic in the first turning stage, which represents the landing performance of the landing mechanism, is built by a Lagrange equation. Three key parameters can be found influencing the landing performance: the retro-rocket thrust T, damping element damping $c_1$, and cardan element damping $c_2$. In this paper, the retro-rocket thrust T is solved with considering that the landing mechanism has no overturning in extreme landing conditions. The damping element damping c1 is solved by a simplified dynamic model. After solving the parameters T and $c_1$, the cardan element damping $c_2$ is calculated using the landing dynamic model, which is built by Lagrange equation. The validities of these three key parameters are tested by simulation. The results show a stable landing, when landing with the three estimated parameters T, $c_1$, and $c_2$. Therefore, the landing dynamic model and methods to estimate key parameters are reasonable, and are useful for guiding the design of the landing mechanism.

This paper presents a Fourier based algorithm for estimating the parameters of the low frequency oscillating modes. The proposed methods estimates various parameters(frequency, damping factor, mode magnitude, phase) by fitting Fourier spectrum and phase with a damped exponential cosine function. Dominant frequency is selected by taking frequency corresponding to the peak spectrum, and damping factor is estimated using the left/right spectra of Fourier spectrum. In addition, mode magnitude is calculated by the normalized peak spectrum, and phase is estimated from spectrum phase. Also, we introduce an accuracy index in order to determine the accuracy of the estimated parameters, and the index is calculated using the deviations of the peak spectrum and the left/right spectra. The parameter estimation methods proposed in this paper include very simple arithmetical processes, so the algorithms are simple and the calculation speed is very fast. The proposed methods are applied to test functions with two dominant modes. The results show that the proposed methods are highly applicable to low frequency parameter estimation.

A smart tuned mass damper (TMD) was developed to provide better control performance than a passive TMD for reduction of earthquake induced-responses. Because a passive TMD was developed decades ago, optimal design methods for structural parameters of a TMD, such as damping constant and stiffness, have been developed already. However, studies of optimal design method for structural parameters of a smart TMD were little performed to date. Therefore, parameter studies of structural properties of a smart TMD were conducted in this paper to develop optimal design method of a smart TMD under seismic excitation. A retractable-roof spatial structure was used as an example structure. Because dynamic characteristics of a retractable-roof spatial structure is changed based on opened or closed roof condition, control performance of smart TMD under off-tuning was investigated. Because mass ratio of TMD and smart TMD mainly affect control performance, variation of control performance due to mass ratio was investigated. Parameter studies of structural properties of a smart TMD was performed to find optimal damping constant and stiffness and it was compared with the results of optimal passive TMD design method. The design process developed in this study is expected to be used for preliminary design of a smart TMD for a retractable-roof spatial structure.

In this paper, we propose a new method with the improved continuity performance of overlap and add speech signal synthesis method using damping harmonic amplitude parameter. The existing method uses the average value of past and current parameters for the sinusoidal amplitude used as the weight of phase error function. But, the proposed method extracts the more accurate sinusoidal amplitude by using a correlation between the original signals and the synthesized signals for the sinusodal amplitude used as the weights. To verify the performance of the proposed method, we observed the average differential error value between the synthesized signals.

The modeling and parameter estimation of a damped one-degree-of-freedom mass-spring system is examined. This paper presents a method for estimating the system parameters (damping coefficients and natural frequency) from measured free-vibration motion of a system that is modeled to include both subcritical viscous damping and kinetic Coulomb friction. The method applies a commercially available least-squares curve-fitting software function to fit the known solution of the equations of motion to the measured response. The method was tested through numerical simulation, and it was applied to experimental data collected from a laboratory mass-spring apparatus. The mass of this apparatus translates on linear bearings, which are the primary source of light inherent damping. Results indicate that the curve-fitting method is effective and accurate for both perfect and noisy measurements from a lightly damped mass-spring system.

Application of combustion stabilization devices such as baffle and acoustic cavity to liquid propellant rocket engine is investigated to suppress high-frequency combustion instability, i.e., acoustic instability. First, these damping devices are designed based on linear damping theory. As a principal design parameter, damping factor is considered and calculated numerically in the chambers with various specifications of these devices. Next, the unbaffled chambers with/without acoustic cavities are tested experimentally for several operating conditions. The unbaffled chamber shows the specific stability characteristics depending on the operating condition and has small dynamic stability margin. The most hazardous frequency is clearly identified through Fast Fourier Transform. As a result, the acoustic cavity with the present design has little stabilization effect in this specific chamber. Finally, stability rating tests are conducted with the baffled chamber, where evident combustion stabilization is observed, which indicates sufficient damping effect. Thrust loss caused by baffle installation is about $2{\%}$.
This paper deals with the design of a car seat for enhancing dynamic ride quality using a Biomechanical Model that was developed from the measured whole-body vibration characteristic. For evaluation of seat ride quality, the z-axis acceleration of floor as an input of biomechanical model was measured on a driving passenger car at highway and national road. Form the floor signal and the estimated biomechanical model, overall ride value evaluated by parameter study of seat stiffness and damping. The result shows that overall ride value decreases as the seat damping increases and the sear stiffness decreases. A lot of polyurethane foams were manufactured and tried to evaluate dynamic ride quality of a seat. It is found that stiffness and damping of a seat show a linear relationship, which means the stiffness and damping are not independent each other, So the optimal seat parameters within practically achievable space are determined.

An efficient method for change of eigenvectors and eigenvalues due to the modifying proportional damping structure using sensitivity coefficients is presented. Sensitivity coefficients are determined by iteration with eigenvalue and eigenvectors before modification of system. The proposed method is applied to examples of 3 degrees of freedom system and plate by modifying mass and stiffness. The predicted change of eigenvectors and eigenvalues are in a good agreement with these from the structural re-analysis after modification of mass and stiffness.

The nonlinear vibration of the thin perforated plate is analyzed in consideration of the V-shaped tension distribution and the effect of wire impact damping. The reduced order FEM model of the tension plate is obtained from dynamic condensation for the mass and stiffness matrices. Tension wire is modeled using the lumped parameter method to effectively describe its contact interactions with the plate. The nonlinear contact-impact model is composed of spring and damper elements, of which parameters are determined from the Hertzian contact theory and the restitution coefficient, respectively. From the evaluation of the computational accuracy and computation time for the deduced impact stiffness and damping coefficient, we determined proper values for the simulation works, accounting for the computational accuracy as well as the computational efficiency. Finally we discussed the results of nonlinear nitration analysis for variations of their design parameters.
