This paper presents the time response of a mixed vibration system with the viscous damping and the hysteretic damping. There are two ways to derive the time response of such a vibration system. One is an analytical method, using the contour integral of complex functions to compute the inverse Fourier transforms. The other is an approximate method in which the analytic functions derived by Hilbert transform are expressed in the state space representation, and only the effective eigenvalues are used to efficiently compute the transient response. The unit impulse responses of the two methods are compared and the change in the damping properties which depend on the viscous and hysteretic damping values is investigated. The results showed that the damping properties of a mixed damping vibration system do not present themselves as a linear combination of damping properties.
Damping behavior of various soil models are compared to actual observed soil damping behavior. Several nonlinear soil models were used and evaluated to predict damping behavior of soils. A combined damping model incorporating both nonvisous and hysteretic damping behavior was developed to better approximate soil behavior. The strengths and limitations of this model are discussed.

The flexural vibration of laminated composite beams with active and passive constrained layer damping has been investigated to design a structure with maximum possible damping capacity. The equations of motion are derived fro flexural vibrations of symmetrical,. multi-layer laminated beams. The damping ratio and model damping of the first bending mode are calculated by means of iterative complex eigensolution method. The direct negative velocity feedback control is used for the active constrained layer damping. It is shown that the flexible laminated beam is more effective in the vibration control for both active and passive constrained layer damping. and this paper addresses a design strategy of laminated composite under flexural vibrations with constrained layer damping.
Structures consisting of concrete and steel parts, which are irregular in damping ratios are investigated. This investigation is a code-based seismic design of such structures. Several practical difficulties encountered, due to inherent differences in the nature of dynamic response of each part, and the different damping ratios of the two parts. These structures are irregular in damping ratios and have complex modes of vibration so that their analysis cannot be handled with the readily available commercial software. Therefore, this work aims to provide simple yet sufficiently accurate constant values of equivalent damping ratios applied to the whole structure for handling the damping irregularity of such structures. The results show that the equivalent damping ratio changes with the height of the building and the kind of the structural system, but it is constant for all accelerations values. Thus, available software SAP2000 applied for seismic analysis, design and the provisions of existing seismic codes. Finally, evaluation of different kinds of structural system used in this research to find the most energy dissipating one found by finding the best value of quality coefficient.
The importance of appropriate use of damping evaluation techniques and points to note for accurate evaluation of damping are first discussed. Then, the variation of damping ratio with amplitude is discussed, especially in the amplitude range relevant to wind-resistant design of buildings, i.e. within the elastic limit. The general belief is that damping increases with amplitude, but it is emphasized that there is no evidence of increasing damping ratio in the very high amplitude range within the elastic limit of main frames, unless there is damage to secondary members or architectural finishings. The damping ratio rather decreases with amplitude from a certain tip drift ratio defined as "critical tip drift ratio," after all friction surfaces between primary/structural and secondary/non-structural members have been mobilized.
Effects of Ti on damping capacity and mechanical properties are investigated in hot rolled Fe-17%Mn alloy. The existing damping alloy with Fe-Mn binary system was limited the use by high production cost, however in case of using scrap iron instead of pure iron although the content of carbon is higher it is possible to be applied wider field especially construction items because the production cost is lower. However, the excellent specific damping capacity is dropped due to the high content of carbon, we developed advanced type of damping alloy included Ti. TiC is formed with added Ti and it holds the specific damping capacity similar to existing damping alloy. The effect of Ti on damping capacity is found to be beneficial in carbon-containing alloy, which is attributed to the depletion of carbon solute due to the formation of TiC.

Eddy current are induced when a nonmagnetic, conductive material is moving as the result of being subjected to the magnetic field, or if it is placed in a time-varying magnetic field. These currents circulate in the conductive material and are dissipated, causing a repulsive force between the magnet and conductor. Using this concept, eddy current damping can be used as a form of viscous damping. This paper investigated analytically and experimentally the characteristics of an eddy current damping when a permanent magnet is placed in a conductive tube. The theoretical model of the eddy current damping is developed from electromagnetics and is verified from Maxwell program and experiments. From these comparisons, although predictability is not accurate at high excitation frequencies, the present model can be used to predict damping force at low excitation frequencies. In order to improve the prediction of the characteristics of an eddy current damping, the induced magnetic flux densities have to be considered in following researches.

Material damping is an important parameter to evaluate the site response by a dynamic loading. Currently the material damping of the subgrade is mainly determined by a resonant column testing. Typical methods to evaluate material damping include half-power bandwidth method and free-vibration decay method. In the large strain range, the half-power bandwidth method gives an erratic damping factor, because the method is based on the assumption of the linear behavior of a specimen. The free-vibration decay method has also limitations in that the damping factors vary with the range of cycles in calculation, and also in that the specific shear strain can not be designated for the free vibration. In this study, the frequency-phase method, which was developed to evaluate material damping of a beam simply supported, is introduced to evaluate the material damping by the resonant column testing. Also, the comparison among half-power method, free-vibration decay method and the frequency-phase method is provided for a remolded sand.

A new linearization model for MR dampers is analyzed. The nonlinear hysteretic damping force model of MR damper can be modeled as a hyperbolic tangent function of currents, positions, and velicities, which is an algebraic function with constant parameters. Model parameters can be identified with numerical method using experimental force-velocity-position data obtained from various operating conditions. The nonlinear hysteretic damping force can be linearized with a given slope of damping coefficient if there exist corresponding currents to compensate for the nonlinearity. The corresponding currents can be calculated from the inverse model when the given linear damping force is set equal to the nonlinear hysteretic damping force. The linearization controller is realized in a DSP controller such that the corresponding currents to satisfy a given damping coefficient should be calculated. Experiments show that the current inputs to the MR damper produce linearized damping force with a given slope of the damping coefficient.
A sensorless active damping scheme for LCL filters in grid-connected parallel inverters for battery energy storage systems is proposed. This damping method is superior to the conventional notch filter and virtual damping methods with respect to robustness against the variation of the resonance of the filter and unnecessary additional current sensors. The theoretical analysis of the proposed damping method is explained in detail, along with the characteristic comparison to the conventional active damping methods. The performance verification of the proposed sensorless active damping method shows that its performance is comparable to that of the conventional virtual damping method, even without additional current sensors. Finally, simulation and experimental results are provided to examine the overall characteristics of the proposed method.
