  • This study predicts the strength of rotary brace damper by analyzing a new set of probabilistic models using the usual method of multiple linear regressions (MLR) and advanced machine-learning methods of multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS), Rotary brace damper can be easily assembled with high energy-dissipation capability. To investigate the behavior of this damper in structures, a steel frame is modeled with this device subjected to monotonic and cyclic loading. Several response parameters are considered, and the performance of damper in reducing each response is evaluated. MLR and MARS methods were used to predict the strength of this damper. Displacement was determined to be the most effective parameter of damper strength, whereas the thickness did not exhibit any effect. Adding thickness parameter as inputs to MARS and MLR models did not increase the accuracies of the models in predicting the strength of this damper. The MARS model with a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.127 and mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.090 performed better than the MLR model with an RMSE of 0.221 and MAE of 0.181.

  • This paper presents a damper system design in torque converter to minimize the vibration in powertrain of automatic transmission vehicle. The lock-up clutch in torque converter makes engine and transmission connected directly. When the lock-up clutch is engaged the torque fluctuation of engine is attenuated by the damper system. This function decides the vehicle power-train dynamic characteristics. At first, the dynamic hysteresis effect with any self and surface to surface contact problems of the damper springs in the damper system for torque converter is analyzed by using FEM. It is shown that these simulation results have a good design reference to energy dissipation operating by damper system in torque converter. And, to calculate dynamic characteristics, the vehicle model is structured by using $AMESim^{(R)}$?? that is a common use program. The vehicle model shows the frequency response of vehicle by changing the stiffness of damper spring, and these results lead the most suitable stiffness of spring. Also, new damper system is analyzed resonance frequency variation and is compared with prior damper.

  • Despite the high lateral stiffness and strength of the Concentrically Braced Frame (CBF), due to the buckling of its diagonal members, it is not a suitable system in high seismic regions. Among the offered methods to overcome the shortcoming, utilizing a metallic damper is considered as an appropriate idea to enhance the behavior of Concentrically Braced Frames (CBFs). Therefore, in this paper, an innovative steel damper is proposed, which is investigated experimentally and numerically. Moreover, a parametrical study was carried out to evaluate the effect of the mechanism (shear, shear-flexural, and flexural) considering buckling mode (elastic, inelastic, and plastic) on the behavior of the damper. Besides, the necessary formulas based on the parametrical study were presented to predict the behavior of the damper that they showed good agreement with finite element (FE) results. Both experimental and numerical results confirmed that dampers with the shear mechanism in all buckling modes have a better performance than other dampers. Accordingly, the FE results indicated that the shear damper has greater ultimate strength than the flexural damper by 32%, 31%, and 56%, respectively, for plates with elastic, inelastic, and plastic buckling modes. Also, the shear damper has a greater stiffness than the flexural damper by 43%, 26%, and 53%, respectively, for dampers with elastic, inelastic, and plastic buckling modes.

  • This study develops a new hybrid passive energy dissipation device for seismic rehabilitation of an existing structure. The device is composed of a friction damper combined with a steel plate with vertical slits as a hysteretic damper. Analytical model is developed for the device, and the capacity of the hybrid device to satisfy a given target performance is determined based on the ASCE/SEI 7-10 process. The effect of the device is verified by nonlinear dynamic analyses using seven earthquake records. The analysis results show that the dissipated inelastic energy is concentrated on the hybrid damper and the maximum interstory drift of the SMRF with damping system satisfies the requirement of the current code.

  • The vibration and disturbances from operating the compact disk layer have an effect on the play ability. As the excitation sources of the compact disk player, there are the vibration of the motors and gears, impact by mechanical parts and the external excitations. So, most of the compact disk player have a anti-vibrational system, which is included some rubber or oil dampers. In this study, the vibration characteristics of rubber damper which is used home compact disk player are investigated. The materials and shape of rubber damper are changed, and the transmissibility is measured. As a conclusion, the natural frequency is moved to higher frequency and the transmissibility is reduced by the increasing rubber stiffness. In comparison to butyl rubber damper, the transmissibility of silicon damper was increased by larger restitution elasticity. The hollow damper was effective to reduced the transmissibility.

  • The purpose of this study was to predict the load effect on a damper installed at a nuclear power plant building after a tsunami using a volume of fluid (VOF) numerical analysis method. The wave height was determined by a sine wave function and the tsunami condition was estimated by the wave length. Also, using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), the maximum damper load was set as a boundary condition for the structural analysis that verified how stress and deformation affect the damper. As a result, such simulations estimated the highest stress distribution for a wave length of 350 m with a maximum stress present at the cross point of stiffness installed at the rear end of the damper. The total deformation was approximately 32 mm at the center of damper.

  • Despite the considerable lateral stiffness and strength of the Concentrically Braced Frame (CBF), it suffers from low ductility and low seismic dissipating energy capacity. The buckling of the diagonal members of the CBF systems under cyclic loading ended up to the shortcoming against seismic loading. Comprehensive researches have been performing to achieve helpful approaches to prevent the buckling of the diagonal member. Among the recommended ideas, metallic damper revealed a better success than other ideas to enhance the behavior of CBFs. While metallic dampers improve the behavior of the CBF system, they increase constructional costs. Therefore, in this paper, a new steel damper with flexural mechanism is proposed, which is investigated experimentally and numerically. Also, a parametrical revision was carried out to evaluate the effect of thickness, slenderness ratio, angle of the main plate, and height of the main plates on the proposed damper. For the parametrical study, 45 finite element models were analyzed and considered. Experimental results, as well as the numerical results, indicated that the proposed damper enjoys a stable hysteresis loop without any degradation up to a high rotation equal to around 31% that is significantly considerable. Moreover, it showed a suitable performance in case of ductility and energy dissipating. Besides, the necessary formulas to design the damper, the required relations were proposed to design the elements outside the damper to ensure the damper acts as a ductile fuse.

  • A new experimental system of base-isolated structures is proposed. There are two kinds of dampers usually used in the base-isolated buildings, one is a viscous-type damper and the other is an elastic-plastic hysteretic-type damper. The base-isolated structure with a viscous damper and that with an elastic-plastic hysteretic damper are compared in this paper. The viscous damper is modeled by a mini piston and the elastic-plastic hysteretic damper is modeled by a low yield-point steel. The capacity of both dampers is determined so that the dissipated energies are equivalent at a specified deformation. When the capacity of both dampers is determined according to this criterion, it is shown that the response of the base-isolated structure with the elastic-plastic hysteretic damper is larger than that with the viscous damper. This characteristic is demonstrated through the comparison of the bound of the aspect ratio. It is shown that the bound of aspect ratio for the base-isolated structure with the elastic-plastic hysteretic damper is generally smaller than that with the viscous damper. When the base-isolated structure is subjected to long-duration input, the mechanical property of the elastic-plastic hysteretic damper deteriorates and the response of the base-isolated structure including that damper becomes larger than that with the viscous damper. The effect of this change of material properties on the response of the base-isolated structure is also investigated.

  • This study introduces the design of a bi-directional damper using a tuned mass damper(TMD) and a tuned liquid column damper(TLCD) and presents experimental verifications to confirm its control performance. The damper used in this study behaves as a TMD in a specific translational direction and acts as a TLCD in the other orthogonal direction. First, shaking table test is performed to investigate the coupled effect of control forces produced by TMD and TLCD. Then, the parameters that affect to dynamic characteristics of the proposed damper are quantitatively evaluated based on the experimental results. Testing results shows that the damper used in this study produces control forces coupled by TLCD and TMD, as it is excited by waves with an incident angle. Also, it is observed that the damper can be used to reduce bi-directional responses of building structures.
