Strength Properties of Old Korean Larch Pile (고(古)부재 잎갈나무 말뚝의 재질 특성)

  • Round piles of Korean larch were excavated from the foundation of ex-Chosunchongdokbu (ex-Chosun Governer-General Building), which was constructed in 1916 and dismantled later in 1996. By the record (Huh, 1996), the Korean larch logs were logged from the Yalu river area near Mt. Baekdu in North Korea. At present, however, Korean larch is not so popular in South Korea. The latewood ratio profiles and strength properties (longitudinal compression, shear, longitudinal tensile, and bending) were obtained. The ratio of latewood from pith to bark increased up to 25 years, and then it showed constant tendency at 40% with some variances. From the microscopic observation, however, the latewood ratio decreased from the heartwood to the sapwood. Compression strength was greater and bending strength was a little lower than the previous reports (references 13~15), which might be attributed to the strength reduction of old structural members by aging or damage in the compression specimens than the bending ones. The flat-grained specimens for the shear and tension test showed higher coefficient of variation (COV) than the edge-grained ones. For the better comparison of results, in case of shear and tensile strength tests, the strength values of the edge-grained specimens were thought to be adopted rather than those of flat-grained ones.

Development of Work Breakdown Structure and Analysis of Precedence Relations by Activity in School Facilities Construction Work (학교시설 건설공사의 작업분류체계 구축 및 단위작업별 선후행 관계 분석)

  • The work breakdown structure and the precedence relations by work activity are very important because they are the basic data for estimating the construction duration in the construction work. However, there is no standard to accurately estimate the construction duration since the size of the school facilities construction is smaller than the general construction work. Therefore, some schools are unable to open in March or September and the delay of the construction duration can cause damage to the students. To solve this problem, this study developed a work breakdown structure of school facilities construction work and analyzed the precedence relations by work activities. The work breakdown structure of the school facilities construction is composed of three steps. The operations corresponding to level 1 and level 2 are as follows. (1) 2 preparatory work categories; preparation period and temporary construction. (2) 17 architectural work categories; temporary construction, foundation & pile work, reinforced concrete work, steel roof work, brick work, plaster work, tile work, stone work, waterproof construction, wood work, interior construction, floor work, metal work, roof work, windows construction, glazing work and paint construction. (3) 7 mechanic and fire work categories; outside trunk line work, plumbing work, air-conditioning equipment work, machine room work, city gas plumbing work, sanitation facilities and inspection & test working. (4) 4 civil work categories; wastewater work, drainage work, pavement work and other work. (5) 1 landscaping work categories; planting work. The work breakdown structure was derived from interviews with experts based on the milestones and detailed statements of existing school facilities. The analysis of precedence relations by school facilities work activity utilized PDM(Precedence Diagramming Method)which does not need a dummy and the relations were applied using FS(Finish to Start), FF(Finish to Finish), SS(Start to Start), SF(Start to Finish). The analysis of this study shows that if one work activity is delayed, the entire construction duration may be delayed because the majority of the works are FS relations. Therefore, it is necessary to use the Lag at the appropriate time to estimate the standard construction duration of the school facility construction. Lag is a term used only in the PDM method and it is used to define the relationship between the predecessor and the successor in creating the network milestone. And it means the delay time applied to the two work activities. The results of this study can reasonably estimate the standard construction duration of school facilities and it will contribute to the quality of the school facilities construction.

Tunnelling in Bangkok - Two Case Studies (방콕의 터널공사 - 두 개의 사례연구)

  • This paper presents two case studies for tunnelling in Bangkok: a subway tunnel site and a flood diversion tunnel site. The first case study is related to ground displacement response for dual tunnel Bangkok MRT subway. The MRT subway project of Bangkok city consists of dual tunnels about 20 km long with 18 subway stations. The tunnels are seated in the firm first stiff silty clay layer between 15-22 m in depth below ground surface. The behavior of ground deformation response based on instrumentation is presented. The back analysis based on plain strain FEM analysis is also presented and agrees with field performance. The shear strain of FEM analysis is in the range of 0.1-1% and in accordance with the results of self boring pressuremeter tests. Meanwhile, the second case study is related to the EPB tunnelling bored underneath through underground obstruction. The Premprachakorn flood diversion tunnel is the shortcut tunnel to divert the flood water in rainy season into the Choapraya river. The tunnel was bored by means of EPB shield tunnelling in very stiff silty clay layer at about 20-24 m in depth. During flood diversion tunnel bored underneath the existing Bangkok main water supply tunnel and pile foundation of the bridge, instrumentation was monitored and compared with predicted FEM analysis. The prevention risk potential by means of predicting damage assessment is also presented and discussed.

A Numerical Study on the Prevention of Clogging in Granular Compaction Pile (쇄석다짐말뚝에 발생하는 간극막힘 저감방안에 관한 수치해석적 연구)

  • Recently, engineering problems such as long-term settlement, differential settlement, and the resultant structural damage, have been frequently reported at construction sites. Use of Sand Compaction Piles(SCP) and Granular Compaction Piles(GCP) are good at remedying existing problems, improving bearing capacity and promoting consolidation. However, such compaction piles have the potential for clogging, which would limit their usability. Investigations into the potential for clogging in SCP, GCP, and GCP mixed with sand has not been thoroughly conducted and is the objective of this current study. Large scale direct shear tests were performed on sections of SCP, GCP, and sand mixed GCP to evaluate bearing capacity. Discrete Element Method analyses were conducted with PFC3D and Finite Element Analyses were conducted with MIDAS GTS to propose an algorithm to help reduce clogging in the granular compaction piles. Results from the large scale direct shear test and multiple simulations suggest a 70% gravel and 30% sand mixing ratio to be optimal for bearing capacity and reducing clogging.
