In this research, damage behavior of singly oriented ply (SOP) fiber metal laminate (FML) subject to concentrated load was studied. The static indentation tests were conducted to study fiber orientation effect on damage behavior of FML. During the static indentation tests, Acoustic Emission technique (AE) was adopted to study damage characteristics of FML. AE signals were obtained by using AE sensor with 150kHz resonance frequency and the signals were compared with indentation curves of FML. As fiber orientation angle increases, the crack initiation load of SOP FML increases because the stiffness induced by fiber orientation is increased. The penetration load of SOP FML is influenced by the deformation tendency and boundary conditions. Cumulative AE counts were well predicted crack initiation and crack propagation and AE amplitude were useful for prediction of damage failure mode. During the matrix cracking, fiber debonding and fiber breakage, AE amplitude has $45{\sim}60dB,\;60{\sim}80dB\;and\;90{\sim}100dB$, respectively.
Recent analysis results with realistic assumptions provide the variability of operator allowable time for the initiation of aggressive cooldown under small break loss of coolant accident or steam generator tube rupture with total failure of high pressure safety injection. We investigated how plant risk may vary depending on the variability of operators' failure probability of timely initiation of aggressive cooldown. Using a probabilistic safety assessment model of a nuclear power plant, we showed that plant risks had a linear relation with the failure probability of aggressive cooldown and could be reduced by up to 10% as aggressive cooldown is more reliably performed. For individual accident management, we found that core damage potential could be gradually reduced by up to 40.49% and 63.84% after a small break loss of coolant accident or a steam generator tube rupture, respectively. Based on the importance of timely initiation of aggressive cooldown by main control room operators within the success criteria, implications for improvement of emergency operating procedures are discussed. We recommend conducting further detailed analyses of aggressive cooldown, commensurate with its importance in reducing risks in nuclear power plants.
In this study, considering dissipated energy in fracture process zone (FPZ), a novel criterion based on maximum strain energy release rate (SER) for orthotropic materials is presented. General case of in-plane loading for cracks along the fibers is assumed. According to the experimental observations, crack propagation is supposed along the fibers and the reinforcement isotropic solid (RIS) concept is employed as a superior model for orthotropic materials. SER in crack initiation and propagation phases is investigated. Elastic properties of FPZ are extracted as a function of undamaged matrix media and micro-crack density. This criterion meaningfully links between dissipated energy due to toughening mechanisms of FPZ and the macroscopic fracture by defining stress intensity factors of the damaged zone. These coefficients are used in equations of maximum SER criterion. The effect of crack initiation angle and the damaged zone is considered simultaneously in this criterion and mode II stress intensity factor is extracted in terms of stress intensity factors of damage zone and crack initiation angle. This criterion can evaluate the effects of FPZ on the fracture behavior of orthotropic material. Good agreement between extracted fracture limit curves (FLC's) and available experimental data proves the ability of the new proposed criterion.
A study is made on the characterization of damage tolerance by spherical indentation in hardly coated layer structure with modest elastic modulus mismatch. A hard silicon nitride is prepared for the coating material and silicon nitride with 5wt% of boron nitride composites for underlayer. Hot pressing to eliminate the effect of interface delamination during the fracture makes strong interfacial bonding. The elastic modulus mismatch between the layers is not only large enough to suppress the surface crack initiation from the coating layer but sufficiently small to prevent the initiation of radial crack from the interface. The strength degradation of the layer structure after sphere contact indentation does not significantly occur, while the degradation of silicon nitride-boron nitride composite is critical at a high load and high number of contacts.
The contribution of damage mechanisms to failure of steam turbine casing made of Cr-Mo-V steel was investigated. Creep-fatigue interaction on the HP side corner of turbine casing was revealed as the root cause of the catastrophic failure performed by metallurgical analysis. The steady-state pressure and transient thermal stress were analyzed based on the actual operating condition of the thermal plant. Damage of creep-fatigue interaction to crack initiation was evaluated with multiaxial effects. The contribution ratio of creep and fatigue to the crack initiation was estimated to 3:1. Temporary geometrical correct action with repair weld was executed. For long-term operation, design improvement of casing equipment for creep resistance should be needed.
Fatigue damage on the train wheel surface was estimated by considering the effect of friction coefficient of rolling on the contact surface between the wheel and rail during operation. From FEM analys, the maximum Tresca stress was 550.7 MPa at a depth of 2.07 mm under the maximum contact pressure ($P_{max}$ = 894.3 MPa) between wheel and rail. The maximum stress continued to increase along with the increase in the frictional coefficient. The fatigue initiation lifetime of the wheel by the rolling contact was predicted using the Smith-Watson-Topper (SWT) equation and the maximum principal strain equation (${\varepsilon}$-N).

In this paper an finite element approach for the edge crack analysis of silicon-steel sheet during cold rolling is presented. Based on the damage mechanics, the proposed approach follows the analysis steps which are composed of damage initiation, damage evolution and fracture. Through those steps, we can find out the initiation instant of crack and resulting propagated length and shape of the crack. The material constants related to fracture is experimentally obtained by tension tests using standard sheet-type specimen and notched sheet-type specimen. To evaluate the prediction accuracy, we performed a pilot rolling test with a initially notched sheets. It is shown that the results obtained by the approach converged to the experimental one concerning about the direction and length of propagated crack. The capability of the proposed one is demonstrated through the application to the actual silicon-steel rolling mill.
Gradient enhanced theories of crystal plasticity enjoy great research interest. The focus of this work is on thermodynamically consistent modeling of grain size dependent hardening effects. In this contribution, we develop a model framework for damage coupled to gradient enhanced crystal thermoplasticity. The damage initiation is directly linked to the accumulated plastic slip. The theoretical setting is that of finite strains. Numerical results on single-crystalline metal showing the development of damage conclude the paper.

The objective of this paper is to investigate the applicability of acoustic emission(AE) technique to monitor the progress of the thermal shock damage on alumina ceramic. For this purpose, alumina ceramic specimen was heated in the furnace and then was quenched in the water tank. When the specimen was quenched in the water tank, complex AE signals due to the initiation of micro-cracks and boiling effect were generated by the progress of thermal shock damage. These mixed AE signals have to be classified for monitoring the degree of the thermal shock damage of alumina ceramics. In this paper, the mixed AE signals generated from both the boiling effect and the crack initiation under thermal shock test was analyzed. The characteristics of AE signals were also discussed by considering the variation of bending strength and Yongs modulus of specimens.
The strain and acoustic emission (AE) signals of Pocheon granite were measured during uniaxial compression tests to investigate microcrack formation and damage. Crack closure, initiation, and damage stresses of each sample were determined through an analysis of the crack volumetric strain and stiffness. The samples experienced four damage stages according to stress levels: stage 1 = crack closure stage; stage 2 = elastic stage; stage 3 = crack initiation stage; stage 4 = crack damage stage. At least 75% of all AE signals occurred in stages 3 and 4, and different AE parameters were detected in the four stress stages. Rise time, count, energy, and duration clearly showed a tendency to gradually increase with the damage stress stage. In particular, the rise time, energy, and duration increased by at least 95% in stage 4 as compared with stage 1. However, the maximum amplitude showed a smaller increase, and the average frequency decreased slightly at higher stages. These results indicate that as the degree of rock damage increases, the crack size grows larger. The crack types corresponding to the AE signals were determined using the relationship between RA (Rise time / Amplitude) values and average frequencies. Tension cracking was dominant in all stress stages. Shear cracking was rare in stages 1 and 2, but increased in stages 3 and 4. These results are consistent with previous studies that reported cracking begins after samples have already been damaged. Our study shows that the state of rock damage can be investigated solely through an analysis of AE parameters when rocks are under compressive stress. As such, this methodology is suitable for understanding and monitoring the stress state of bedrock.
