The purpose of this paper is to analyze the crack characteristics by performing the compression test of the rock and concrete specimens. The experiments are carried out by using strain sensors which can measure length change and the AE sensor which can detect the elastic wave from the crack. The crack volumetric strain calculated from measured strain is shown in different shape on the rock and the concrete specimens. This is because the specimens have a different degree of brittleness. However, the crack volumetric strain associated with the fracture and damage was similar to accumulated AE energy of the two specimens. This means that the AE sensor can assess damage in real time without damaging the structure.

An electrical steel strip is commonly used as a core material in all types of electric transformers and motors. It is produced by a cold rolling process. In this paper, a damage-mechanics-based approach that predicts the edge fracture of an electrical steel strip during cold rolling is presented. We adopted the normal tensile stress criterion and the fracture energy method as a damage initiation criterion and a damage evolution scheme, respectively. We employed finite element analysis (FEA) to simulate crack initiation and propagation at the initial notch located at the edges of the strip. The material constants required in FEA were experimentally obtained by tensile tests using a standard and a notched sheet-type specimen. The results reveal that the edge crack was initiated at the entrance of the roll bite and that it rapidly evolved at the exit. The evolution length of the edge crack increased as the length of the initial notch as well as the front tension reel force of the strip increased.

The fracture behavior of glass/epoxy plain woven composite plates containing circular holes is experimentally investigated to examine the effects of hole size and specimen width on notched tensile strength. It is shown in this paper that the characteristic length according to the point stress criterion depends on the hole size and specimen width. For predicting the notched tensile strength, a modified failure criterion is developed. An excellent agreement is found between the experimental results and the analytical prediction of modified failure criterion. The notched strength and the characteristic length have an increase and decrease relations. When the unstable fracture occured, the critical crack length equivalent for the damage zone size at the edge of hole is about twice the characteristic length. The critical energy release rate G$_{c}$ is independent of hole size(0.03 .leq. 2R/W .leq. 0.5) under the same specimen width. However G$_{c}$ increases with an increase in specimen width which can be explained by stress relaxation due to the notch insensitivity.ity.

The estimation of the fatigue design life for large welded structures is usually performed using the liner cumulative damage method such as Palmgren-Miner rule or the equivalent damage method. When a fatigue crack is detected in a welded steel structure, the residual service life has to be estimated base on S-N curve method and liner elastic fracture mechanics. In this study, to examine the 3D fatigue crack behavior and estimate the fatigue life of out-of-plane gusset fillet welded joint, the fatigue tests were carried out on the model specimens. Investigations of three-dimensional fatigue crack propagation on gusset welded joint was used the finite element analysis of FEMAP with NX NASTRAN and FRANC3D. Fatigue crack growth analysis was carried out to demonstrate the effects of aspect ratio, initial crack length and stress ratio on out-of-plane gusset welded joints. In addition, the crack behaviors of fatigue tests were compared with those of the 3D crack propagation analysis in terms of changes in crack length and aspect ratio. From this analysis result, SIFs behaviors and crack propagation rate of gusset welded joint were shown to be similar fatigue test results and the fatigue life can also be predicted.

Pitting wear is a dominant from of polyethylene surface damage in total knee replacements, and may originate from surface cracks that propagate under repeated tribological contact. In this study, stress intensity factors, K$\_$I/and $_{4}$, were calculated for a surface crack in a polyethylene-CoCr-bone system under the rolling and/or sliding contact pressures. Crack length and load location were considered in determination of probable crack propagation mechanisms and fracture modes. Positive K$\_$I/ values were obtained for shorter cracks in rolling contact and for all crack lengths when the sliding load was apart from the crack. $_{4}$ was the greatest when the load was directly adjacent to the crack (g/a=${\pm}$1). Sliding friction caused a substantial increase of both K$\_$I/$\^$max/ and $_{4}$$\^$max/. The effective Mode I stress intensity factors, K$\_$eff/, were the greatest at g/a=${\pm}$1, showing the significance of high shear stresses generated by loads adjacent to surface cracks. Such behavior of K$\_$eff/ suggests mechanisms for surface pitting by which surface cracks may propagate along their original plane under repeated rolling or sliding contact.

Steam generator tubes experience widespread degradations such as stress corrosion cracking, wear, tube rupture, denting, fatigue and so on. The resulting damages can cause tube bursting or leak of the primary water which contains radioactivity Therefore the allowable size of the damage is required to be determined on the maintenance purpose. The burst pressure of a tube with a T-type combination crack consisting of longitudinal and circumferential cracks is obtained experimentally and analytically. Fracture parameters such as stress intensity factor and crack opening angle are investigated. Also the burst pressure for a T-type combination crack is compared with that of a single longitudinal crack to develop a length-based criteria.
A series of laboratory tests was conducted to observe damage process by stress and to understand characteristics of permeability related with rock damage. Rock specimens which were composed of the Cretaceous medium grained granites were experienced of damage stress between 65% and 95% of the compressive strength. Rock deformation by damage process was identified with the elastic wave velocity test. Relationship between rock damage and permeability change was also analyzed by water injection test in the laboratory. According to the results of the tests, damage tends to be occurred from stress level of 80% of the compressive strength and it reduces elastic wave velocity. The damaged specimens with stress more than 80% of the compressive strength showed crack density more than 0.6 and persistent length with good connectivity of cracks. They also have higher permeability than that of specimens with crack density less than 0.6. Considered with the above results, the rock specimens used in this study were fully damaged from stress level of 80% of the compressive strength. Crack initiation and propagation by damage caused good connectivity of cracks through rock specimen. These damage process, therefore, brought high permeability coefficient through water flow conduit in the rock specimen.

The propagation rate(da/dt) prediction parameter and the microstructure properties of creep crack in domestic 3.3NiCrMov steel were investigated at 550$\^{C}$ by using 0.5" CT specimen under constant load(4090N) and constant Ct(300∼4000N/mhr) condition that was maintained during crack growth of 1mm distance. C* usually increased with crack length though load was reduced in order to maintain constant Ct value as crack growth and considerably showed the scatter band, but Ct depended on load line displacement rate and represented a good relation with da/dt. At constant toad and Ct region, crack growth slope was 0.900 and 0.844 each, in the other hand C* slope was 0.480. Fully coalesced area(FCA) ahead of crack tip was increased as Ct value increase to the critical value, and after that value FCA decreased. The average diameter ditribution of cavity in FCA showed the greatest value about 1.5 ㎛ when Ct=2000N/mhr. The increasing of Ct in FCA view point enlarged the size of damage area and the size reached to maximum 800 ㎛ when Ct=2000N/mhr.
Pitting wear is a dominant form of polyethylene surface damage in total knee replacements, and may originate from surface cracks that propagate under repeated tribological contact. In this study, stress intensity factors, $K_{I}$ and $K_{II}$, were calculated for a surface crack in a polyethylene - CoCr - bone system under the rolling and/or sliding contact pressures. Crack length and load location were considered in determination of probable crack propagation mechanisms and fracture modes. Positive $K_{I}$ values were obtained for shorter cracks in rolling contact and for all crack lengths when the sliding load was apart from the crack. $K_{II}$, was the greatest when the load was directly adjacent to the crack $(g/a={\pm}1)$. Sliding friction caused a substantial increase of both $K_{I}^{max}$ and $K_{II}^{max}$. The effective Mode I stress intensity factors, $K_{eff}$, were the greatest at $g/a={\pm}1$, showing the significance of high shear stresses generated by loads adjacent to surface cracks. Such behavior of $K_{eff}$ suggests mechanisms for surface pitting by which surface cracks may propagate along their original plane under repeated rolling or sliding contact.

Foundations are a vital part of structures. Over time, the foundations can deteriorate due to unforeseen overloads and/or settlements, resulting in the appearance of cracks in the concrete. These cracks produce changes in the static and dynamic behavior of the affected foundation, which alter its load carrying capacity. In this work, non-destructive techniques of relative simplicity of application are presented for the detection, location, and quantification of damage, using numerical models, solved with the finite element method and Power Series. For this, two types of parameters are used: static (displacement and elastic curvature) and dynamics (natural frequencies). In the static analysis, the damage detection is done by means of a finite elements model representing a beam supported on an elastic foundation with a discrete crack that varies in length and location. With regard to dynamic analysis, the governing equations of the model are presented and a method based on Power Series is used to obtain the solution for a data set, which could be the Winkler coefficient, the location of the crack or the frequency. In order to validate the proposed methodologies, these techniques are applied to data obtained from laboratory tests.
