Local damage detection of a fan blade under ambient excitation by three-dimensional digital image correlation

  • Damage detection based on dynamic characteristics of a structure is one of important roles in structural damage identification. It is difficult to detect local structural damage using traditional dynamic experimental methods due to a limited number of sensors used in an experiment. In this work, a non-contact test stand of fan blades is established, and a full-field noncontact test method, combined with three-dimensional digital image correlation, Bayesian operational modal analysis, and damage indices, is used to detect local damage of a fan blade under ambient excitation without use of baseline information before structural damage. The methodology is applied to detect invisible local damage on the fan blade. Such a method has a seemingly high potential as an alternative to detect local damage of blades with complex high-precision surfaces under extreme working conditions because it is a noncontact test method and can be used under ambient excitation without human participation.

  • 선박의 피로 손상 해석에는 운항적인 요소를 고려한 매개 변수들을 포함하고 있다. 이러한 운항적인 변수들 때문에 설계 단계에서 예측하는 피로 손상도와 실제 운항 조건을 고려한 피로 손상도간의 차이가 발생한다. 마찬가지로 피로 해석에서 적재 하중 조건을 고려할 때 실제 컨테이너선은 다양한 적재 상태가 존재하지만 설계 단계에서 대표 하중 조건을 선택하여 피로 손상도를 계산한다. 실제 하중 조건과 설계시 하중 조건을 적용하였을 때 피로 손상 계산 결과의 차이가 예상됨에도 불구하고 컨테이너선의 하중 조건에 따른 피로 손상 기여도에 관한 연구는 거의 이루어지지 않은 실정이다. 본 연구에서는 컨테이너선의 화물 중량 분포를 변화시켰을 때 피로 손상기여도를 분석하고자 하였다. 일반적으로 설계 단계에서 적용하는 하중 조건뿐만 아니라 다양한 하중 조건을 생성하고 유체동역학 계산으로 얻을 수 있는 선체 거더 하중 및 스펙트럴 피로 해석을 수행하여 얻은 피로 손상도를 확인하였다. 그 결과, 컨테이너선에서 화물 중량 분포 변화는 선체 거더 하중을 변화시켰으며 선체 거더 응력에 영향을 주어 피로 손상의 변화를 야기시키는 것을 알 수 있었다.

Behavior of reinforced concrete plates under impact loading: different support conditions and sizes

  • In this study, effects of impact loads on reinforced concrete (RC) plates are examined analytically. During examination of RC plates, they were exposed to impact loading with two different support conditions in three different sizes. RC plates in different support conditions were analyzed with Concrete Damage Plasticity Model (CDP) and reinforcing steel was modeled with Classical Metal Plasticity Model (CMP) by ABAQUS finite element software. After the analysis it is found that impact loads, displacements, energy absorption capacities and damage patterns are changed due to support conditions and plate sizes. Results that are obtained from RC plate experiments in literature under impact loads are found to be similar with the results of numerical analysis with CDP material models.

  • Impact damage modeling of concrete under high strain rate loading conditions is investigated. A phenomenological penetration model that can account for complicated impact and penetration process such as the rate and loading history response of concrete, the microstructure-penetration interaction etc. is discussed. Constitutive law compatible with Second Law of thermodynamics and coupled damage and plasticity modelling based on continuum damage mechanics are also examined. The purpose of this paper is preliminarily to study with respect to impact and penetration models for concrete before the development of that model.

  • In this paper, the possibility of time reversal phenomenon was investigated in damage detection of structure. In conventional lamb wave techniques, damage is identified by comparing the measured data (baseline signals) and the current data. But this method can lead to high false signal in the intact condition of structures due to environmental conditions of the structures. So in this studying, we investigate the possibility of damage detection in the aluminum plate using the time reversal phenomenon of lamb waves.

  • This paper presents the disaster control due to flooding through the case study of Samwhadong, Donghae city, Kangwondo, broken out at 31, August 2002. In order to assess the characteristics of flood damage one must consider social and geological conditions, the factors of flood risk were derived based on GIS. For reduction of flood damage, flood hazard map was prepared for local residents. These information will support refuge activities, it would aid the reduction of flood damage.

  • Reactor pressure vessel (RPV) under severe accident conditions accompanied by core melting is exposed to direct high-temperature thermal loads. Understanding the creep behavior of the material is one of the most important factors for evaluating the structural integrity at these conditions. While damage evaluation studies have been conducted on critical structures of nuclear power plants through finite element (FE) analyses considering creep behavior, for accurate creep damage evaluation, constitutive equations considered in the FE analyses may have different results depending on the time hardening and strain hardening models as well as the tertiary creep consideration. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the creep damage under severe accident conditions by using FE method for a representative domestic RPV material, SA508 Gr.3. The effect of material hardening models and constitutive equations which are the main variables were also investigated.

Deformation characteristics of tunnel bottom after construction under geological conditions of long-term deformation

  • Mountainous areas cover more than 70% of Korea. With the rapid increase in tunnel construction, tunnel-collapse incidents and excessive deformation are occurring more frequently. In addition, longer tunnel structures are being constructed, and geologically weaker ground conditions are increasingly being encountered during the construction process. Tunnels constructed under weak ground conditions exhibit long-term deformation behavior that leads to tunnel instability. This study analyzes the behavior of the bottom region of tunnels under geological conditions of long-term deformation. Long-term deformation causes various types of damage, such as cracks and ridges in the packing part of tunnels, as well as cracks and upheavals in the pavement of tunnels. We observed rapid tunnel over-displacement due to the squeezing of a fault rupture zone after the inflow of a large amount of groundwater. Excessive increments in the support member strength resulted in damage to the support and tunnel bottom. In addition, upward infiltration pressure on the tunnel road was found to cause severe pavement damage. Furthermore, smectite (a highly expandable mineral), chlorite, illite, and hematite, were also observed. Soil samples and rock samples containing clay minerals were found to have greater expansibility than general soil samples. Considering these findings, countermeasures against the deformation of tunnel bottoms are required.

  • For the purpose of monitoring by ultrasonic test of the ball bearing conditions in rotating machinery, a system for their diagnosis was developed. ultrasonic technique is used to detect abnormal conditions in the bearing system. And various data such as frequency spectrum, energy and amplitude of ultrasonic signals, and ultrasonic parameters were acquired during experiments with the simulated ball bearing system. Based on the above results and practical application for power plant, algorithms and judgement criteria for diagnosis system was established.

  • The occurrence of ductile fracture is the working limit of many metal forming processes. It is necessary to predict the criteria and to apply the condition in a process design. Over the years. the way for clarifying conditions have been studied and presented. However such a way needs lots of experiments and analysis. In this study, in order to determine the critical damage value of a used material Cu 4N, it was performed a tensile test and FEM analysis by using DEFORM 2D. For applying the obtained critical damage value it was also performed a upsetting test by using DEFORM 2D. The way of determining a critical damage value which is presented in this study will make possible to find easily it which is one of the working limit factor. And the way of determining a critical damage value will make possible to find in multi-pass drawing process.
