Glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars have been introduced as an effective alternative for the conventional steel reinforcement in concrete structures to mitigate the costly consequences of steel corrosion. However, despite the superior performance of these composite materials in terms of corrosion, the effect of replacing steel reinforcement with GFRP on the seismic performance of concrete structures is not fully covered yet. To address some of the key parameters in the seismic behavior of GFRP-reinforced concrete (RC) structures, two full-scale beam-column joints reinforced with GFRP bars and stirrups were constructed and tested under two phases of loading, each simulating a severe ground motion. The objective was to investigate the effect of damage due to earthquakes on the service and ultimate behavior of GFRP-RC moment-resisting frames. The main parameters under investigation were geometrical configuration (interior or exterior beam-column joint) and joint shear stress. The performance of the specimens was measured in terms of lateral load-drift response, energy dissipation, mode of failure and stress distribution. Moreover, the effect of concrete damage due to earthquake loading on the performance of beam-column joints under service loading was investigated and a modified damage index was proposed to quantify the magnitude of damage in GFRP-RC beam-column joints under dynamic loading. Test results indicated that the geometrical configuration significantly affects the level of concrete damage and energy dissipation. Moreover, the level of residual damage in GFRP-RC beam-column joints after undergoing lateral displacements was related to reinforcement ratio of the main beams.
Purpose: This study intends to develop a nonlinear cyclic plasticity damage model in the framework of finite element formulation, which is capable of taking large deformation effects into account, in order to accurately predict the hysteretic behavior of stainless steel structures. Method: The new cyclic constitutive equations that utilize the combined isotropic-kinematic hardening rule for plastic deformation is incorporated into the damage mechanic model in conjunction with the large strain formulation. The damage growth law is based on the experimental observations that the evolution of microvoids yields nonlinear damage accumulation with plastic deformation. The damage model parameters and the procedure for their identification are presented. Results and Conclusion: The proposed nonlinear damage model has been verified by simulating uniaxial strain-controlled monotonic and cyclic loading tests, and successfully applied to a thin-walled stainless steel pipe subjected to constant and alternating strain-controlled cyclic loadings.
This paper was studied on the damage behavior of stainless steel (STS 304) for gas boiler with specific resistance. The electrochemical polarization test of STS304 for gas boiler was carried out. And the anodic polarization and damage aspect, such as pitting corrosion, was considered. With being low specific resistance, the passive current density of STS 304 increases, passive region and pitting potential is low. Also, the patting aspect of STS304 In specific resistance $74{\Omega}{\cdot}m$ water little appears, the pitting number increases and the damage behavior, such as pitting aspect, gradually grow bigger with being low specific resistance.
Sets of nonlinear formulations together with an energy-based damage index (DI) are proposed to model the behavior and quantify the damage of the confined and unconfined concretes under monotonic and cyclic loading. The proposed formulations and DI can be employed in numerical simulations to determine the stresses and the damages to the fibers or the layers within the sections of reinforced concrete (RC) components. To verify the proposed formulations, an adaptive finite element computer program was generated to simulate the RC structures subjected to monotonic and cyclic loading. By comparing the simulated and the experimental test results, on both the full-scale structural members and concrete cylindrical samples, the proposed uniaxial behavior modeling formulations for confined and unconfined concretes under monotonic and cyclic loading, based on an iterative process, were accordingly adjusted, and then validated. The proposed formulations have strong mathematical structures and can readily be adapted to achieve a higher degree of precision by improving the relevant coefficients based on more precise tests. To apply the proposed DI, the stress-strain data of concrete elements is required. It can easily be calculated by using the proposed nonlinear constitutive laws for confined and unconfined concretes in this paper.
The mechanical properties and damage mode of {{{{ {Y}_{2 } {O}_{3} }}-doped tetragonal (Y-TZP) can-didated as biomaterials were performed under indentation stress-strain curve critical load for yield and cracking strength degradation and fatigue behavior with Hertzian indentation tests. This material shows the brittle behavior which is confirmed by indentation stress-strain response. The critical load for cracking(Pc) is much higher than that for yields (Py) indicating crack resistance Strength were strongly dependant on contact area and there were no degradation when the indenter size was ${\gamma}$=3.18 mm suggesting that Y-TZP should be highly damage tolerant to the blunt contacts. Multi-cycle contact were found to be innocuous up to {{{{ {10 }^{6 } }} cycles at 500N and {{{{ {10 }^{5 } }} cycles at 1000N in water. On the other hand contacts at {{{{ {10 }^{6 } }} cycles at 1000 N in water did show some signs of incipient degradation. By contrast contacts with Vickers indenter pro-duced substantial strength losses at much lower loads suggesting that the mechanical integrity of this ma-terial would be compromised by inadvertent sharp contacts.

Composite materials have a higher specific strength and modulus than traditional metallic materials. Additionally, these materials offer new design flexibilities, corrosion and wear resistance, low thermal conductivity and increased fatigue life. These, however, are susceptible to impact damage due to their lack of through-thickness reinforcement and it causes large drops in the load-carrying capacity of a structure. Therefore, the impact damage behavior and subsequently load-carrying capacity of impacted composite materials deserve careful investigation. In this study, the residual strength and impact characteristics of plain-woven CFRP composites with impact damage are investigated under axial tensile test. Impact test was performed using drop weight impact tester. And residual strength behavior by impact was evaluated using the caprino model. Also we evaluated behavior of residual strength by change of mass and size of impactor. Examined change of residual strength by impact energy change through this research and consider impactor diameter in caprino model.
Objects adrift can cause considerable damage to coastal infrastructure and property during tsunami and storm surge events. Despite the potential for harm, the drifting behavior of these objects remains poorly understood, thereby hindering effective prediction and mitigation of collision damage. To address this gap, this study employed a motion analysis program to track a drifting container's location using images from an existing laboratory experiment. The container's trajectory and velocity were calculated based on the positions of five markers strategically placed at its four corners and center. Our findings indicate that the container's maximum drift velocity and distance are directly influenced by the scale of the solitary wave and inversely related to the container's weight. Specifically, heavier containers are less likely to be displaced by solitary waves, while larger waves can damage coastal structures more. This study offers new insights into container drift behavior induced by solitary waves, with implications for enhancing coastal infrastructure design and devising mitigation strategies to minimize the risk of collision damage.

Damage to natural resources from inappropriate visitor behavior is a problem faced by National Park management. Based on the data gathered by personal interview and mail questionnaire, this study examines the effects of communication strategies to reduce depreciative behavior in Carlsbad Caverns National Park. One-quarter of Carlsbad Caverns visitors indicates that they have noticed damage to cave formation during their tour. Almost 38% of visitors say that they have witnessed someone touch a formation inside the Caverns. This is a relatively high percentage compared with other depreciative behavior research to refrain from "tattling" on fellow visitors. Two-thirds of the respondents recalls touching formation replicas before entering the Cavern, while almost all visitors (97.9%) say that they have heard the ranger's talk about not touching formation or leaving the trail. Visitors feel that the ranger's talk is more effective in reducing depreciative behavior than the formation replicas, although at least three-fourths of all respondents believes both techniques are effective.

In order to predict failure behavior of advanced high-strength steel sheets (AHSS) in hole expansion tests, damage model was developed considering surface condition sensitivity (with specimens prepared by milling and punching: 340R, TRIP590, TWIP940). To account for the micro-damage initiation and evolution as well as macro-crack formation, the stress triaxiality dependent fracture criterion and rate-dependent hardening and ultimate softening behavior were characterized by performing numerical simulations and experiments for the simple tension and V-notch tests. The developed damage model and the characterized mechanical property were incorporated into the FE program ABAQUS/Explicit to perform hole expansion simulations, which showed good agreement with experiments.

Determining of the shape in the process of design for natural draught cooling tower is very important, because the shape of hyperbolic shell is respond sensitively to dynamic behavior of the whole cooling tower against wind load. In engineering practice, the geometric parameters have been determining based on the natural frequency. This study analyses influence of the tower shell geometric parameters on the structural behavior. For three representative models were selected, they were analyzed based on evaluation of damage by means of nonlinear FE-method. As a result, a hyperbolic rotational shell with the small radius overall was the lowest damage index induced by sufficient capacity of the stress redistribution and thus a wind-insensitive structure.
