Application of Artificial Insemination Technology for Dairy Breeding in Mongolia

  • This study was focused on improvement of milk production in Mongolian dairy industry by artificial insemination (AI) technology, supported by ODA of KOICA in Republic of Korea. This program was started in January 2009 and it is in $3^{rd}$ years. This manuscript summarized the data especially on estrus synchronization and pregnancy establishment in dairy cows (Holstein) this year. A total of 81 dairy cows from 4 private farms (38 from Undarmal milk and that of 30, 8 and 5 dairy cows from Onjin (Enkhbayer), Jargalant, and BRM School farms respectively) were synchronized with 5 ml Lutalyse (i.m.) in the dump of dairy cows and then estrus was detected 2 to 3 days after $PGF_{2{\alpha}}$ injection. The synchronized dairy cows were inseminated with 0.5 ml dairy frozen semen by conventional artificial insemination (AI) techniques. Pregnancy was diagnosed about 60 days after AI by palpation method. About 96.3% (78/81) of synchronized cows were responded to single $PGF_{2{\alpha}}$ injection. Total 75 over 78 dairy cows (90.1%) inseminated were diagnosed as pregnant. The estrus induction and pregnancy rates were very effective using Lutalyse injection and conventional AI techniques in Mongolian dairy cow. The present results indicated that AI after estrus induction in Mongolian dairy cows could be applied to dairy breeding technology for improving breeding efficiency and milk production of the country.

중학생의 우유 및 유제품 섭취 실태와 소비 성향에 관한 조사 (A Study on Consumption Behavior for Milk and Daily Products among Middle School Students)

  • 본 연구에서는 중학생들의 우유 및 유제품의 섭취 실태를 조사하고 소비 성향에 미치는 요인들을 분석하기 위하여 경기도 지역의 남녀 중학생 447명을 대상으로 조사를 실시하였다. 조사대상자의 37.4%만 매일 우유를 마셨으며, 우유 1일 섭취량은 1컵이 56.7%이었다. 현재 주로 일반우유를 마셨으며, 대부분의 학생들은 일반우유보다 가공우유를 더 좋아하는 것으로 나타났다. 우유를 마시는 주된 이유로는 '키가 크고 싶어서', '음료용, 간식용으로 마시기 좋아서'였으며, 우유를 마시지 않는 주된 이유로는 '우유의 맛이 없어서'와 '다른 음료가 더 좋아서'였다. 유제품 섭취 실태에 대한 조사 결과, '일주일에 3~4번' 정도로 섭취하였으며, 남학생은 아이스크림, 여학생은 마시는 요구르트를 가장 선호하였다. 대부분의 학생이 유제품을 섭취하는 이유는 '맛이 좋아서', '음료용, 간식용으로 먹기 좋아서', '키가 크고 싶어서' 순이었으며, 유제품을 섭취하지 않는 주요 이유로는 '집에서 유제품을 먹지 않아서'였다. 유제품 섭취에 의해 건강상의 효과를 묻는 질문에 79.9%가 '없었다'고 응답하였다. 우유 및 유제품 구매 시 선택 기준을 조사한 결과, 우유의 경우는 '유통기한을 보고', 유제품의 경우는 '자신이 좋아하는 유제품'이었다. 대부분의 학생들은 우유와 유제품의 소비를 촉진시키기 위해서는 '품질과 맛의 개선'과 '엄격한 위생 관리'가 우선적으로 개선되어야 한다고 응답하였다.

Factors to Assess for Re-breeding after Parturition in Milking Cows

  • The purpose of this study was to assess for re-breeding concentrate period in postpartum in milking cows. The 48 cows aged $3.5{\sim}5.5$ years and of $400{\sim}600\;kg$ body weight were examined every 3rd day from 15 to 36 day postpartum. Blood samples for progesterone and estradiol $17{\beta}$ hormone analyses were withdrawn from the coccygeal vein every third day until the end of the experiment. The ovarian follicular numbers were verified and measured using a multi frequency probe. The least squares means are presented for each day by GLM of SAS. The results showed that ovary lengths (right ovary; $1.64{\pm}0.62\;cm$, left ovary; $1.44{\pm}0.46\;cm$) were similar in right and left ovary activity level during estrous cycle of postpartum cows. We were judged completed uterus on day at $2.31{\pm}0.17\;cm$ level of cervix diameter. And we were monitoring started at $6.44{\pm}2.03\;cm$ from day 15 after postpartum. The results showed that mean plasma concentration of progesterone (3.28 ng/ml) in large follicle gradually increased days 30 in postpartum. And, monitoring of estradiol 176 (22.18 pg/ml) hormone during postpartum period would be useful to predict the ovarian and uterus activity for re-breeding in postpartum milking cows. From these results, we conclude that cervix diameter (mean: 2.31 cm) was very important for reproductive organ recovery standard level of postpartum milking cows, hormone secretion level ($P_4$: 3.28 ng/ml, $E_2$: 22.18 pg/ml) and body condition score ($2.5{\sim}2.75$) level about 30 days in postpartum period.

  • Recent scandals of milk additives in several developing countries provoked controversy about quality issue of dairy products, grapping academic attention to the dairy supply chain. In this paper, we first focus on moral hazard problem of self-interested entities about the quality across the dairy supply chain, due to unobservable and unverifiable quality management efforts of all entities - including dairy producers, stations, and a final producer - and high inspection cost for the quality. Based on the identified moral hazard problem, we understand why the adoption of IoT-based tracking systems about quality produced from each entity is a must, different from RFID-based tracking systems.

소 자궁내막염에 대한 미생물학적 분포 (Microbiological studies on endometritis in cattle and dairy cows)

  • In order to investigate reproductive disorder in dairy cows, 312 uterine from abattroirs and 56 cows from dairy farms were examined. The ovary and uterine were collected from abattroirs and rectal palpation was carried out in the case of reproductive disorder at dairy farm. Microbiological examination was also carried out from the collected samples. 1. Out of 312 ovaria from slaughter-house, cystic ovary and endometritis were classified as 51(16%) and 134(43%), respectively. And of 56 dairy cow from farms, 43(77%) were identifies as endometritis. 2. The main cause of reproductive disorder was classified as hormonal imbalances, endometritis and cystic ovary, singly or in combination. 3. The main causative agents of endometritis was encountered as E coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus sp and Corynebacterium sp. 4. The highest susceptible antibiotics to the isolates was cephalosporin.

  • Nanofood is advanced functional food which food industry and food scientist try to develop process foods in near future. To be developed nanofood, nanofood materials are needed, such as biodegradable nanosphere material, biotechnical nanofood material, and protein and nanofood material. There are some food industrial applications with nanotechnology, such as nanoencapsulation, nanomolecule making, nanoparticle and powder making, nano separation, and nano extration. We can find several nanofoods and nanofood materials on the market. In addition, dairy industry is also in the first step for the development of nanofunctional food. However, nanoencapsulations of lactase, iron, vitamin C, isoflavone are developed for functional milk. Dairy industry needs various nanofood materials to be advanced functional dairy products.

  • Results of free and bound myo-inositol in infant formula (IF) are presented. Inositol was analyzed by HILIC ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometer. The levels of free myo-inositol in 27 Australian and 4 EU originated IF samples were 300-600 mg/kg of powder or 1.6-3.1 mg/100 kJ. The amount of bound inositol in lipid fraction of IF was, on average, 10% of free myo-inositol.

  • Taramira (Eruca sativa) cake, an unconventional oil cake, replaced 25 and 50 per cent crude protein of mustard cake in the ration of crossbred calves in an experiment of 90 days duration. Total glucosinolate content of the three concentrate mixture was almost similar (18.19, 17.95 and $17.95{\mu}mol/g$ dry matter), however, glucouracin was the major glucosinolate of experimental diets. Similar dry matter Intake, nutrient digestibility (except those of fibre fractions) and nitrogen balances as well as similar serum $T_3$ and $T_4$ levels and growth rate in all the groups indicated that taramira cake can replace 50 per cent crude protein of mustard cake in the diet of crossbred calves.

  • The most important task in Korean dairy industry is to keep the seasonal and annual balance of raw milk supply and demand. Too much surplus milk supply which causes dumping sale of market milk makes dairy industries get in trouble of management, and eventually affects to farmers and consumers economically. As balancing of supply and demand is so important in the fee economic market system, the adaption of the quota system of milk production and seasonal price differentiation has been recommended very often as a method of controlling the milk supply and demand. However, this recommendation did not go through successfully due to the strong objection of dairy farmers. Recently, the voice of consumer's requirement for safer and more hygienic, and high protein, low fat level dairy product is getting stronger. By knowledge of this kind changes, quality improvement in nutrients and hygiene is the most positive way to expand the volume of milk consumption. To meet the consumer's demand, therefore, it is necessary to revise the level of milk fat content and the hygienic grading system for the payment system of raw milk.
