To understand day-to-day fluctuations in soil moisture content in Seoul, I simulated daily soil moisture content from 1908 to 2009 using long-term climatic precipitation and temperature data collected at the Surface Synoptic Meteorological Station in Seoul for the last 98 years with a hydrological simulation model, BROOK. The output data set from the BROOK model allowed me to examine day-to-day fluctuations and the severity and duration of droughts in the Seoul area. Although the soil moisture content is highly dependent on the occurrence of precipitation, the pattern of changes in daily soil moisture content was clearly quite different from that of precipitation. Generally, there were several phases in the dynamics of daily soil moisture content. The period from mid-May to late June can be categorized as the initial period of decreasing soil moisture content. With the initiation of the monsoon season in late June, soil moisture content sharply increases until mid-July. From the termination of the rainy season in mid-July, daily soil moisture content decreases again. Highly stochastic events of typhoons from late June to October bring large amount of rain to the Korean peninsula, culminating in late August, and increase the soil moisture content again from late August to early September. From early September until early October, another sharp decrease in soil moisture content was observed. The period from early October to mid-May of the next year can be categorized as a recharging period when soil moisture content shows an increasing trend. It is interesting to note that no statistically significant increase in mean annual soil moisture content in Seoul, Korea was observed over the last 98 years. By simulating daily soil moisture content, I was also able to reconstruct drought phenomena to understand the severity and duration of droughts in Seoul area. During the period from 1908 to 2009, droughts in the years 1913, 1979, 1939, and 2006 were categorized as 'severe' and those in 1988 and 1982 were categorized as 'extreme'. This information provides ecologists with further potential to interpret natural phenomenon, including tree growth and the decline of tree species in Korea.
Changing patterns and the possibility of climate change in the area of Cheiudo island, the southernmost Island in Korea, were analyzed using daily temperature and Precipitation data observed at the Cheiu Regional Meteorological Office from May 1923 to December 1998. A hydrologic simulation model "BROOK" was used to simulate and analyze the dynamics of daily soil moisture content and soil moisture deficit by applying the daily weather data. During the period, significantly increasing pattern was observed in temperature data of both annual and monthly basis, while no significantly changing pattern was observed in precipitation data. During the last 76 years. mean annual temperature was observed to have risen about 1.4$^{\circ}C$, which may show the Possibility of the initiation of climate change on the island whose validity should be tested in future studies after long-term studies on temperature. Based on the simulation, due to increased temperature, significant increase was predicted in evapotranspiration. while no significant decrease was detected in simulated soil moisture content during the period. Changing pattern of annual soil moisture content was markedly different from those of precipitation. In some dominant trees, negative effects of the drought of the late season for the previous year were shown to be statistically significant to radial growth of the tree for the current year. As annual variation of radial growth of trees is mainly affected by the soil moisture content. the information on the dynamics of soil moisture deficit possibly provides us with useful information for the interpretation of tree growth decline on the mountain. mountain.

This study was carried out to investigate the consumptive use of water for red peppers and soy beans. The correlation between the soil moisture contents and the selected meteorological factors during the growing season was analyzed. Characteristics of the drought at Jinju, Yeosu, Gwangju, and Mokpo area were figured out in view of frequency analysis. The results obtained from this study could be used as a reasonable criteria for the estimation of the duty of water in the design of upland irrigation systems. Obtained results are summarized as follows: 1. Red peppers were grown at the three levels of soil moisture contents; 75 percent, 50 percent, and 25 percent, respectively. The red pepper grown at the 75 percent of soil moisture content showed the highest yield. The total evapotranspiration during the growing season from red peppers was 471. lmm, which was 86.6mm less than the pan evaporation. 2. The soy bean grown at 75 percent soil moisture content showed the highest yield, although there was no signicant difference in yields among treatments. The total evapotranspiration during the growing season from the soy bean was 342.8 mm, which was 119.2mm less than the pan evaporation. 3. Coefficients of consumptive use(k) and meteorological data are shown on Table-9. 4. The significant correlations between the evapotranspiration and the humidity and daily temperature range were observed. Results are shown on Table-11.. Evaporanspiration can be easily estimated from the humidity and daily temperature range by using the equation...... (1) Ept=4.808-0.041H+0.207T.......(1) where, Ept; evapotranspiration(mm/day) H ; humidity(%) T ; daily temperature range ($^{\circ}C$) 5. The variations of soil moisture content during the growing season at the soil depth of 5cm, 15cm, and 45cm are shown on Fig. 4~9. The results of the correlation analysis between the evapotranspiration from the crops and the soil moisture content are shown on Table-12. The evapotranspiration can be estimated from soil moisture content at the different depth of the soil by using the equation....... (2). Ept = 3.433 - 0. 364M1 +0. 359M$_2$- 0. 055M$_3$....... (2) where, Ept; evapotranspiration (mm/day) M1 soil moisture meter reading at 5cm depth M$_2$; " 15cm " M$_2$; " 40cm " 6. The estimated probab]e successive dry days in selected areas are shown on Table 13. Gumbel-Chow method was used to calculate the probable successive dry days. Further investigation are required to obtain the more detailed and reliable results.
The purpose of this study is to improve the method of evaluating groundwater recharge by using grid-based soil moisture routing technique. A model which predicts temporal variation and spatial distribution of soil moisture on a daily time step was developed. The model uses ASCII-formatted map data supported by the irregular gridded map of the GRASS(Geographic Resources Analysis Support System)-GIS and can generate daily and monthly spatial distribution map of surface runoff, soil moisture content, evapotranspiration within the watershed. The model was applied to Ipyunggyo watershed($75.6\;\textrm{km}^2$) located in the upstream of Bocheongchun watershed. Seven maps; DEM(Digital Elevation Mode]), stream, flow path, soil, land use, Thiessen network and free groundwater level, were used for input data. Predicted streamflows resulting from two years (l995, 1996) daily data were compared with the observed values at the watershed outlet. The results of temporal variations and spatial distributions of soil moisture are presented by using GRASS GIS. As a final result, the monthly predicted groundwater recharge was presented.sented.

In the aspect of re-irrigation point, it had an order of PF 1.5> PF 1.7>PF 2.1. In case the twenty years's drought frequency was taken into account, the target amount of irrigation water meeded for premature cultivation was 916mm and its average daily moisture consumption was 10.8mm. 5. Total moisture consumption of red pepper under open cultivation showed 1145mm in maximum and had an order of loam>Sandy loam>sand. In the aspect of re-irrigation frequency was taken into consideration the target amount of irrigation water was 1,174.8mm and its average daily moisture consumption was 8.0mm. 6. Total moisture consumption of autumn chinese cabbages was 349mm in maximum and had an order of loam>sandy loam>sand. In the aspect of re-irrigation point, it had an order of PF 1.5>PF 2.1>PF 2.7. In case the twenty year's drought frequency was taken into account, the target amount of irrigation water needed for chinese cabbage cultivation was 259.5mm and its average daily moisture consumption was 6.5mm. 7. It is effective to keep the soil moisture of tomato from PF 1.5 to PF 2.1 in loam and the soil moisture control was effective in sandy loam than red pepper and chinese cabbage. In sand, the production was severaly decreased and the re-irrigation point of PF 1.5 was effective.
Background: For understanding and evaluating a more realistic and accurate assessment of ecosystem carbon balance related with environmental change or difference, it is necessary to analyze the various interrelationships between soil respiration and environmental factors. However, the soil temperature is mainly used for gap filling and estimation of soil respiration (Rs) under environmental change. Under the fact that changes in precipitation patterns due to climate change are expected, the effects of soil moisture content (SMC) on soil respiration have not been well studied relative to soil temperature. In this study, we attempt to analyze relationship between precipitation and soil respiration in temperate deciduous broad-leaved forest for 2 years in Gwangneung. Results: The average soil temperature (Ts) measured at a depth of 5 cm during the full study period was $12.0^{\circ}C$. The minimum value for monthly Ts was $-0.4^{\circ}C$ in February 2015 and $2.0^{\circ}C$ in January 2016. The maximum monthly Ts was $23.6^{\circ}C$ in August in both years. In 2015, annual precipitation was 823.4 mm and it was 1003.8 mm in 2016. The amount of precipitation increased by 21.9% in 2016 compared to 2015, but in 2015, it rained for 8 days more than in 2016. In 2015, the pattern of low precipitation was continuously shown, and there was a long dry period as well as a period of concentrated precipitation in 2016. 473.7 mm of precipitation, which accounted for about 51.8% of the precipitation during study period, was concentrated during summer (June to August) in 2016. The maximum values of daily Rs in both years were observed on the day when precipitation of 20 mm or more. From this, the maximum Rs value in 2015 was $784.3mg\;CO_2\;m^{-2}\;h^{-1}$ in July when 26.8 mm of daily precipitation was measured. The maximum was $913.6mg\;CO_2\;m^{-2}\;h^{-1}$ in August in 2016, when 23.8 mm of daily precipitation was measured. Rs on a rainy day was 1.5~1.6 times higher than it without precipitation. Consequently, the annual Rs in 2016 was about 12% higher than it was in 2015. It was shown a result of a 14% increase in summer precipitation from 2015. Conclusions: In this study, it was concluded that the precipitation pattern has a great effect on soil respiration. We confirmed that short-term but intense precipitation suppressed soil respiration due to a rapid increase in soil moisture, while sustained and adequate precipitation activated Rs. In especially, it is very important role on Rs in potential activating period such as summer high temperature season. Therefore, the accuracy of the calculated values by functional equation can be improved by considering the precipitation in addition to the soil temperature applied as the main factor for long-term prediction of soil respiration. In addition to this, we believe that the accuracy can be further improved by introducing an estimation equation based on seasonal temperature and soil moisture.

To define the amount of consumptive use of upland crops, the moisture consumption characters were investigated with different soil moisture content by soil properties(loam, sandy loam, sand) at the experimental farm of Kon-Kuk University from April 20 to July 20 1984. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. Total moisture consumption under bare soil condition had an order of loam> sandy loam> sand and showed an order of pF 1.5> pF2. 1> pF 2.7 by re-irrigation point and the average during the experimental period (92days) was 435. 9mm and the daily average moisture consumption was 4. 7mm. 2. The moisture consumption characters of bare soil plot obtained showed that the amount of irrigation water per one time and the days of intermission increased and, on the contrary, the times of irrigation and the total amount of irrigation water decreased by the increment of re-irrigation point in the same soil 3. Total moisture consumption of spring cabbage under open cultivation showed 528.6 rim in maximum and had an order of loam> sandy loam> sand. In the aspect of rc-irrigation point, it had an order of pFl. 5> pF 2.1> pF 2.7. In case the planning basic year was taken into account, the amount of irrigation water needed for open cultivation was 456. 3 mm and its average daily moisture consumption was 6. 2mm. 4. Total moisture consumption of summer cucumber under open cultivation showed 635. 8mm in maximum and had an order of loam> sandy loam> sand. In the aspect of re-irrigation point, it had an order of pF 1.5> pF2. 1> pF2. 7 In case the planning basic year was taken into consideration, the amount of irrigation water was 516. 9mm and its aversge daily moisture consumption was 6. 5mm. 5. The result of cabbage cultivation showed its maximum yield in loam soil when the pF values were maintained from 1,5 to 2.1 and then the evapotranspiration ratio was 1, 76 and also when the amount of irrigation water were similar, it showed effective to reduce the days of intermtission. 6. The result of cucumber cultivation showed its maximum yield in sandy loam soil when the pF value maintained from 1.5 to 1.7 and when the irrigation point maintained at pF 2,7 in sandy soil, its yield was severely decreased.
Dewatered sludge of 400,000t/y from water treatment plants in Korea is being disposed through landfill and ocean dumping. However, the disposal is posing more and more serious environmental problems at the same time not only because of landfill site shortage in municipal suburbs, but because of the concern it will contaminate the oceans. In this study, the research on utilizing the sludge dried by flash dryer as covering soil in the landfill sites was carried out to solve these problems on environmental affinity. Both dewatered and dried sludge were exposed to the natural condition and observed according to the atmospheric changes. An experiment of soil engineering characteristics of the dried sludge and tests on mixed sludge(silty sandy soil : dried sludge = 10:90 ~ 30:70) such as particle size distribution, liquid and plastic limit, moisture content, specific gravity and compaction test were carried out. According to the compaction test, the compaction was confirmed as the optimum water content ratio was observed in the condition of SM-silty sand of particle size distribution, NP of liquid and plastic limit, 101.4% of moisture content, 2.04~2.12 of specific gravity. The results showed that dried sludges mixed with at least 30% of natural soil could be used as daily covering soil in the landfill sites.

Soil is the main nitrogen (N) provider for plants but N in soil is not all available to advanced plants. Mineralization is a critical biological process for transferring organic N to inorganic N that can be used by plants directly. To investigate the effect of different levels of soil temperature and water content to soil mineralization, a field experiment was established on three different sites (A, B and C). We measured soil temperature, moisture and electrical conductivity once daily after swine slurry application. Average soil moisture and temperature in site A is the highest among three sites (40.9% and $9.7^{\circ}C$, respectively). Following is in site C (37.3% and $9.6^{\circ}C$) and the lowest is in site B (28.0% and $9.0^{\circ}C$). Ammonium N (NH4+-N) and nitrate N (NO3--N) were determined on the first and fifth day after treatment. Compared with site B and C, site A always had the highest soil total N content (1.54 g N kg-1 on day one; 1.22 g N kg-1 on day five) and highest NO3-- N content (93.18 mg N kg-1 on day one; 16.22 mg N kg-1 on day five) and a significant decrease on day five. Content of NH4+-N in site B and C reduced while in site A, it increased by 6.7%. Results revealed that net N mineralization positively correlated with soil temperature (P<0.5, $r=0.675^*$) and moisture (P<0.01, $r=0.770^{**}$), suggesting that to some extent, higher soil moisture and temperature contribute more to inorganic N that can be used by plants.

Accurate and optimal water supply to cereal crop is critical in growing stalks and producing maximum yields. Excessive soil moisture may cause nutrient deficiencies and oxygen deficiency. Excessive soil water during crop growth stages results in decrease of yields. In Korea, the largest agricultural lands are paddy fields. Recently, upland crops are cultivated in paddy field soils to reduce overproduced rice in Korea. In order to success this policy, it is necessary to fully understand crop response to excessive soil moisture condition from paddy field soils. Adzuki bean is one of major legumes which provide protein in daily diet. Adzuki bean has been well know its weakness to excessive soil moisture condition, In order to obtain optimal yields of adzuki bean from paddy field cultivation, it is necessary to understand response of adzuki bean under different soil moisture conditions. This study investigated characteristics of growths, yields and response degree of water stress from adzuki bean. Three cultivars were selected for this study; Chungju, Hongeon, and Arari. All adzuki beans were cultivated in a paddy field which was divided into three sections with different soil moistures. The paddy field was located in Milyang, Gyeongsangnam during 2016. One section of the paddy field had the greatest average soil moisture content as 35.1% during adzuki bean cultivation (very poor). The second greatest soil moisture section had 32.6% (somewhat poor) and the smallest soil moisture section had 28.9% of soil moisture (somewhat well). During cultivation of three cultivar adzuki beans, soil moisture contents and groundwater levels were monitored. All the characteristics of growth and yield components were measured; height, thickness, 100 seed weights etc. Stress index values were calculated by Stress Day Index (SDI). All cultivars had the greatest yields from somewhat well section. Chungju had the greatest yields throughout all three sections compared to other cultivars. Chungju had 81% greater yield than Hongeon which had the smallest yield from somewhat well section. Arari set in middle from all sections. However there was no significant differences yields from very poor and somewhat poor sections. Leaf SPAD values tended to decrease and stable carbon isotope values increased as soil moisture increased. However, Chungju had no difference across different soil moistures in SPAD and stable carbon isotope values, while Hongeon had the greatest differences across sections. These trends followed by SDI values. Chungju had the smallest SDI values compared to other cultivars, which meant that Chungju was the strongest tolerance against excessive soil moisture than other cultivars. All three cultivars showed severe decrease of yields from very poor and somewhat poor sections. Arari and Hongeon showed great decrease from somewhat well section compared to yields from upland soil. These two cultivars may not be proper cultivating in paddy fields. In conclusion, adzuki bean is very sensitive to soil moisture condition and detailed soil managements are required to obtain optimal yields of adzuki bean from paddy field cultivation.
