  • Branchial cleft cysts are most common neck masses in adults. Most are second branchial cysts, which occur in the neck, anterior to sternocleidomastoid muscle at the mandibular angle. Rarely these cysts may be present in the parapharyngeal space. We report a case of a second branchial cleft cysts in the parapharyngeal space of 32-year-old female, which was misdiagnosed as peritonsillar abscess. It was excised via transoral and transcervical approach.

  • Splenic cysts are uncommon and classified as either primary(true) or secondary(pseudo-) depending on the presence or absence of a true epithelial lining. True cysts (epidermoid cyst) of the spleen are very rare. Three cases of splenic cysts in childhood were treated at the Yeungnam University Hospital in the last eleven years(1989-1999). Two of patients were girls. The ages at diagnosis were 7, 12 and 15 years. Abdominal ultrasonography and computerized tomography were utilized for the diagnosis. Radionuclide scanning was performed in one patient. Surgical resection(one partial splenectomy and two total splenectomies) was performed. The sizes of cysts were 4, 6.5 and gem in maximum demension.

  • Dermoid cysts located in the floor of the mouth are very rare developmental keratinizing squamous epithelium lined cysts. Anatomically, they are classified as sublingual (median genioglossal), submental (median geniohyoid) and lateral dermoid cysts, and they can be further classified as epidermoid, dermoid, and teratoid cysts by histology. We report a case of sublingual dermoid cyst in a 16-year-old boy presenting as a large sublingual swelling causing speech and swallowing difficulties and discuss the surgical treatment techniques and histopathological features of this lesion.

  • Ganglion cysts have been described in all joints. In the knee, although the finding of meniscal degenerative cysts is fairly common, a few cases have been reported concerning ganglion cysts of anterior cruciate ligament. However, ganglion cysts of posterior cruciate ligament are quite rare. We experienced two cases of ganglion cyst in the posterior cruciate ligament, which were treated successfully with arthroscopic debridement.

  • This report is to show healing process of two cases of buccal bifurcation cyst (BBC) developed from the mandibular deciduous second molars. Extracting the involved deciduous teeth led to marsupialization of the cysts and promoted eruption of the associated successors without orthodontic force. The cyst-associated premolars in the two cases erupted faster than the premolars on the contralateral noncyst side. The cysts were completely filled with normal bone. The monitoring radiographs showed bone healing, root formation, and path of eruption of the associated teeth after marsupialization of BBC.

  • A female mixed miniature pinscher dog, about 5 years old, 4 kg, was referred to veterinary teaching hospital of Chungnam National University with chief complaint of excessive hemorrhagic vaginal discharge for a month, partial alopecia and hyperpigmentation. There are no specific change with CBC, blood chemistry and X-ray findings but we figured out high estrogen concentration with hormone analysis and detected a majority of the superficial epithelial cells with pyknotic nuclei by cytologic examination of vaginal smear preparation and multiple ovarian cysts on both ovaries by ultrasonography. Based on the clinical signs, hormone analysis, vaginal smear preparation and ultrasonography, the authors diagnosed this case as hyperestrogenism with ovarian cysts.

  • 17-year-old and 14-year-old brothers were referred for evaluation of the cystic lesions on the mandibular anterior area with no symptoms. Neither their mother nor the brothers could recall any past trauma to those areas. Panoramic and intraoral radiographs revealed moderately defined cystic lesions on their mandibular anterior areas. Biopsies on both lesions revealed simple bone cysts. Hereditary cause or familial history of simple bone cysts could not be found in literature review. This case may have been a coincidence. However, further investigation is needed to find the cause of simple bone cysts occurring in patients those are closely related.

  • Cyst is a closed sac, having a distinct membrane and division compared to the nearby tissue. Most cysts in the oro-maxillofacial area are odontogenic origin and found most commonly by oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Enucleation is considered as a definitive therapy in the management of these cysts. However, to select the treatment method for large cyst, consideration of position of the cyst, size and accessibility to main structure are needed. Marsupialization is a minimal invasive technique to treat large odontogenic cyst and tumor without damage to adjacent important structures. This study was undertaken to describe three cases of odontogenic cysts and tumors of jaws that were successfully treated with enucleation after marsupialization.

  • Intrathoracic cyst was considered rare entity but one of the important diseases in the field of thoracic surgery. Authors had experienced 17 cases of intrathoracic cysts that were treated in the department of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery of Pusan NationalUniversity Hospital for 10years from January, 1983. to December,1992. The summary is as follows: Their age distribution was from 2 years and 9 months to 59 years of age, mean age 27.2 years. There were 8 males and 9 females. The type of intrathoracic cyst was 10 cases of Bronchogenic cyst, 2 cases of Pericardial cyst and 4 cases of Non specific cyst. The anatomical locations of intrathoracic cysts were 6 cases of anterior mediastinum, 2 cases of middle mediastinum, 3 cases of posterior mediastinum and 6 cases of lung parenchyme. The most common symptom was coughing and followed by general weakness, fatigue, chest pain & discomfort and hemoptysis and 6 patients were asyptomatic. The successful complete removal was done at all cases.Postoperative complications were developed in 5 patients but there was no case of hospital mortality.

  • A female, 14-year-old mixed dog weighing 4 kg and a female,8-year-old schnauzer dog weighing 6 kg showing vaginal discharges and vomiting for a few weeks were examined for the preoperative check of anterior cruciate ligament rupture and the recheck after the surgery of nephrectomy. There were no distinct abnormal signs except for the increased CBC at schnauzer dog on blood chemistry analysis. Radiographic and ultrasonographic findings were a large abdominal mass and a cyst-like hypoechogenic or anechogenic cavitary lesion on the ovary region. These findings were consistent with an ovarian cyst. Thereafter highly suspected ovarian cysts by diagnostic imaging were supported by high estrogen concentration on hormonal assay and the results of Pathologic examination as the unilateral ovarian cysts with secondary pyometra.
