  • The effects of moisture and temperature on buckling of laminated composite cylindrical shell panels are investigated both numerically and experimentally. A quadratic isoparametric eight-noded shell element is used in the present analysis. First order shear deformation theory is used in the present finite element formulation for buckling analysis of shell panels subjected to hygrothermal loading. A program is developed using MATLAB for parametric study on the buckling of shell panels under hygrothermal field. Benchmark results on the critical loads of hygrothermally treated woven fiber glass/epoxy laminated composite cylindrical shell panels are obtained experimentally by using universal testing machine INSTRON 8862. The effects of curvature, lamination sequences, number of layers and aspect ratios on buckling of laminated composite cylindrical curved panels subjected to hygrothermal loading are considered. The results are presented showing the reduction in buckling load of laminated composite shells with the increase in temperature and moisture concentrations.

  • This paper studies electro-magneto-mechanical bending studying of the cylindrical panels based on shear deformation theory. The cylindrical panel is constrained with two simply-supported edges at longitudinal direction and two clamped boundary conditions at circumferential direction. The governing equations are derived based on the principle of virtual work in cylindrical coordinate system. Levy-type solution of the governing equations is derived to reduce two dimensional PDEs to a 2D ODEs. The reduced ordinary differential equation is solved using the Eigen-value Eigen-vector method for the clamped-clamped boundary condition. The electro-magneto-mechanical bending results are obtained to show that every displacement, rotation and electromagnetic potentials how change with changes of initial electromagnetic potentials and mechanical loads along longitudinal and circumferential directions.

  • A plate type supporting structure of a tube bundle in axial flow generates a certain band of a high frequency periodic excitation of a vortex shedding and/or a flow separation due to sharp edge of the plate thickness and a severe pressure drop due to a cross-sectional area of the supports. With a design consideration of the low vibration and a small flow resistance, the analysis method is uniquely confined to an experimental approach because a complex geometry of a cylindrical tube bundle and/or physical phenomena related to the fluid-structure interaction of tube bundle in a flow impede a theoretical or a numerical approach. A 5x5 cylindrical tube bundle with 5 supports which were discretely located along the bundle's axis was tested in the FIVPET hydraulic test loop for a design evaluation and an analysis perspectives. A high frequency flow-induced vibration of the supporting structures of the cylindrical tube bundle was measured at a outer surface of a supporting structure through a transparent flow housing by the laser dopper vibrometer. Pressure drop in-between three measurement distances was measured by the differential pressure transmitter. High frequency vibration and pressure drop fairly depends on the geometric design of supporting structure. So, these two parameters would be used as a qualitative design variables for design evaluation and analysis.

  • We have explored a strategy to control the supramolecular nano-structures self-assembled from rigid segments through attachment of flexible chains through microphase separation and anisotropic arrangement. Supramolecular structures formed by self-assembly of rigid building blocks can be precisely controlled from 1-D layered, 3-D bicontinuous cubic to 2-D cylindrical structures by systematic variation of the type and relative length of the respective blocks. Furthermore, depending on the individual molecular architectures, rigid building blocks self-assemble into a wide range of supramolecular structures such as honeycomb, disk, cylinder, helix, tube, barrel stave, and nano-cage.

  • The concept of "Saturation Impulse" for rigid, perfectly plastic structures with finite-deflections subjected to dynamic loading was put forward by Zhao, Yu and Fang (1994a). This paper extends the concept of Saturation Impulse to the analysis of structures such as simply supported circular plates, simply supported and fully clamped square plates, and cylindrical shells subjected to rectangular pressure pulses in the medium load range. Both upper and lower bounds of nondimensional saturation impulses are presented.

  • Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is a stochastic population based optimization algorithm which has attracted attentions of many researchers. This method has great potentials to be applied to many optimization problems. Despite its robustness the standard version of PSO has some drawbacks that may reduce its performance in optimization of complex structures such as laminated composites. In this paper by suggesting a new variation scheme for acceleration parameters and inertial weight factors of PSO a novel optimization algorithm is developed to enhance the basic version's performance in optimization of laminated composite structures. To verify the performance of the new proposed method, it is applied in two multi-objective design optimization problems of laminated cylindrical. The numerical results from the proposed method are compared with those from two other conventional versions of PSO-based algorithms. The convergancy of the new algorithms is also compared with the other two versions. The results reveal that the new modifications inthe basic forms of particle swarm optimization method can increase its convergence speed and evade it from local optima traps. It is shown that the parameter variation scheme as presented in this paper is successful and can evenfind more preferable optimum results in design of laminated composite structures.

  • In this paper, the optimal design of vibration control system for smart structures has been investigated semi-analytically via the optimization of geometric parameters like the placements and sizes of piezoelectric sensors and actuators (S/As) bonded on the structures. The criterion based on the maximization of energy dissipation was adopted for the optimization of the control system. Based on the sensing and actuating equations, the total energy stored in the system which is used as the objective function was analytically derived with design variables explicitly presented. Two cases of single and combined vibration modes were addressed for a simply supported beam and a simply supported cylindrical shell. For single vibration mode, the optimal distributions of the piezoelectric S/As could be obtained analytically. However, the Sequential Quadratic Programming (SQP) method has to be employed to solve those which violated the prescribed constraints and to solve the case of combined vibration modes. The results of three examples, which include a simply supported beam, a simply supported cylindrical shell and a simply supported plate, showed good agreement with those obtained by the Genetic Algorithm (GA) method. Moreover, in comparison with the GA method, the proposed method is more effective in obtaining better optimization results and is much more efficient in terms of computation time.

  • Optical Fiber Bragg Grating sensor has a good performance to measure microscopic displacement which can measure strain of lining concrete and cylindrical structure like high intensity containment building and it can present many advantages like a corrosion resistance from the durability point of view. Then it can measure plane geometrical displacement of cylindrical structures with two-way displacement FBG sensor module. According to the test result, measurement of FBG sensor is better performance than other electric sensor system and 2D-level measurement. As a test result, Resolution of the two-way displacement sensor module with FBG sensors are more 10 times than other LVDT or 2D surveying.

  • This paper presents an analytical study on the displacement behavior safety of cylindrical hollow rollers. Using the finite element method, the hollow roller with Y-shaped column structures between three tubes has been developed to analyze the displacement behavior safety. For the same dimension and weight of two hollow roller models, the displacement behavior safety of a typical hollow roller is lower 4~6.6% than that of the newly designed hollow roller with Y-shaped column structures between three tubes. Thus, this paper recommends Y-shaped hollow roller for increasing the roller strength safety and decreasing a total roller weight, which may save a consuming electrical energy.
