Guided wave techniques have been used for pipeline inspection because of the long range inspection capability of guided waves. One of main concerns of these technique is how ones decide the axial interval of sensors when they are utilized for pipeline inspection. This question is related to the characteristic of cylindrical guided wave propagation, especially wave attenuation. Thus, attenuation of fundamental longitudinal guided wave propagating liquid-filled steel pipes is numerically investigated in the paper. Several liquids such as water, diesel oil, castor oil etc. are considered for the filing materials in the pipes. Sink is considered for numerical models for abandoning standing wave modes; hence, the attenuation dispersion curves become much simpler. Those attenuation calculations can be utilized for guided-wave-based nondestructive testing of pipelines when one inspects pipelines, using monitoring sensors, which are installed outside pipes.
In this paper, guided circumferential wave propagating in an orthotropic viscoelastic cylindrical curved plate subjected to traction-free conditions is investigated in the frame of the Kelvin-Voight viscoelastic theory. The obtained three wave equations are decoupled into two groups, Lamb-like wave and SH wave. They are separately solved by the Legendre polynomial series approach. The availability of the method is confirmed through the comparison with the published data of the SH wave for a viscoelastic flat plate. The dispersion curves and attenuation curves for the carbon fiber and prepreg cylindrical plates are illustrated and the viscous effect on dispersion curves is shown. The influences of the ratio of radius to thickness are analyzed.

The thermal ratcheting deformation at the reactor baffle and upper internal structure of the liquid metal reactor (LMR) can occur due to movement of the hot sodium free surface. In in-service inspection of reactor internals of LMR, a new inspection technique should be developed for the detection of the thermal ratcheting damage. In this study, an inspection technique using ultrasonic guided wave is proposed for the detection of the thermal ratcheting damage of cylindrical vessels. A 316L stainless steel cylindrical shell specimen has been prepared. The thermal ratchet structural tests were cyclically performed by heat-up up to $550^{\circ}C$ with steep temperature gradients along the axial direction after cool-down by cooling water. Ultrasonic guided wave propagation has been characterized by analysis of dispersion curve of the stainless steel plate. The zero-order antisymmetric $A_0$ guided wave has been selected as the optimal mode for detection of the ratcheting deformation. It is confirmed that the thermal ratcheting deformation can be detected by the measurement of transit time difference of circumferentially propagated $A_0$ guided waves.
A theoretical study is presented for the prediction of the scattering of obliquely incident plane acoustic wave by transversely isotropic cylindrical shells immersed in water. In dorder to illustrate the vailidity of the theory backscattering form functions are compared with the existing results for degenerated problems: the catterings by isotropic shell and transversely isotropic solid cylinder. The unidirectional fiber reinforced boron-aluminum composites are selected as a model of transversely isotropic materials having potential applications in practice. From the resonant scattering analysis of the partial backscattering form functions, the dispersion curves for fluid-borne Stoneley wave, guided wave along the shell, and the lowest three Lamb type waves can be found. The Lamb type dispersions are compared with those of the flat plate. The variation of anisotropy significantly affects the properties of circumferential waves. From these results, it can be possible to identify parametrically the material properties of anisotropic cylindrical targets.

In EMAT field, spiral RF coils are much more widely used when compared with solenoid coils. In the field of the magnetostrictive strip transducers for long range ultrasonic testing of cylindrical structures, however, solenoid coils has been used. This seems to be attributed to the difficulty in fabricating low frequency (i.e., large size) spiral coils. In this paper, we describe a method for fabricating spiral coil magnetostrictive strip guided wave transducers from FFC (flexible flat cable). It is demonstrated through a comparison experiment that the spiral coil transducer has much superior performance (sensitivity, SNR, and guided wave direction control capability) than the previous transducer with solenoid coils.

An ultrasonic resonance scattering spectroscopy technique is developed and applied for reconstructing elastic constants of a transversely isotropic cylindrical component. Immersion ultrasonic measurements are performed on tube samples made from a boron/aluminum composite material to obtain resonance frequencies and dispersion curves of different guided wave modes propagating in the tube. Theoretical analysis on the acoustic resonance scattering from a transversely isotropic cylindrical tube is also performed, from which complete backscattering and resonance scattering spectra and theoretical dispersion curves are calculated. A sensitive change of the dispersion curves to the elastic properties of the composite tube is observed for both normal and oblique incidences; this is exploited for a systematic evaluation of damage and elastic constants of the composite tube samples. The elastic constants of two boron/aluminum composite tube samples manufactured under different conditions are reconstructed through an optimization procedure in which the residual between the experimental and theoretical phase velocities (dispersion curves) is minimized.

Guided waves can be used for the inspection of long range pipelines. Surface corrosion is often found as a major defect type in pipelines. The reciprocity relation is a well-established theorem by which one can simplify complicated mathematical expressions. The approach has been already applied to plate and half-space structures to obtain the closed-form solutions of scattered amplitude. However, results for the case of cylindrical structures have not been reported yet. In this paper, the scattering of torsional waves, which is widely used in commercial applications, is explored by the reciprocity theorem approach. Obtaining closed-form solutions of the amplitudes of propagating waves is much simplified by using the reciprocal relation. The scattered amplitudes for elliptical and rectangular defect shapes are calculated with respect to defect depth and width, at frequencies between 0 and 500 kHz. The amplitude shows the periodic result as a function of frequency. The derived closed-form solutions can play a significant role in quantitative signal interpretation.

The coupling phenomenon between stress and magnetic induction, known as magnetostriction, has been successfully applied to generate and measure elastic waves. Most applications of this phenomenon thus far, however, are rather limited to cylindrical ferromagnetic waveguides. The main objective of this work is to develop a new patch-type, orientation-adjustable magnetostrictive transducer that is applicable for non-cylindrical, non-ferromagnetic waveguides. The existing patch-type transducer consisting of a ferromagnetic patch and a racetrack coil is useful to generate elastic waves only in one specific direction once the patch is bonded to a test specimen. However, the proposed transducer can transmit and receive elastic waves in any direction only with one patch at a given location. The proposed magnetostrictive transducer consists of a circular nickel patch, a figure-of-eight coil, and a couple of bias permanent magnets. Because of the unique configuration of the transducer, the propagating direction of the generated waves can be freely controlled since the set of bias magnets and the coil is not bonded to the magnetostrictive patch. In this work, the characteristics of the proposed transducer were investigated experimentally.

Cylindrical structures such as pipes and shafts are widely used in various industrial facilities. Recently, researches on magnetostrictive transduction of torsional waves have been actively reported for the nondestructive evaluation of those cylindrical structures. However, the existing magnetostrictive patch transducer has somewhat inconvenient and time.consuming process like patch bonding to a structure since it should employ a magnetostrictive patch having strong magnetostriction. To overcome these limitations of the existing transducer, in this work, we develop a novel modular magnetostrictive transducer to generate and measure torsional waves to inspect a cylindrical structure. The proposed transducer can be applied as viscous liquid coupling with shear couplant or dry coupling without coupling media instead of patch bonding to a structure. We describe a detailed structure of the modular transducer and conduct some experiments to verify its performance.
