There are three sub-processes associated with the assembly of the valve seat and cylinder head; heat fitting, cold fitting, and shrink fitting. In the heat fitting stage, the cylinder head is heated to a specified temperature and then squeezed toward the outer diameter of the valve seat. The cold fitting process cools the valve seat and safely squeezes it toward the inner diameter of cylinder head. However, these methods increased the installations & running cost and curtailed productivity. To address these problems, we analyzed the shrink fitting process using the contact pressure caused by fitting interference between the outer diameter of the valve seat and the inner diameter of the cylinder head. In this study, a closed form equation for predicting the contact pressure and fitting load is proposed. For quality control of the assembly line, principal factors of the shrink fitting process influenced in contact pressure were simulated by the FEM. Actual loads measured in the field showed good agreement with the results obtained by theoretical and finite element analysis.
A PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) was applied to measure in-cylinder velocity field according to inlet valve angle during compression stroke. Two engines, one is conventional DOHC 4 valve and the other is narrow valve angle, were used to compare real compression flow. The results show that the flow patterns are well arranged compared with intake flow and the basic tumble flow structures are maintained until end compression stage regardless of valve angle. Also the results show that the tumble motion is intensified by momentum conservation during compression in normal engine. In the normal engine, the bulk shape of flow pattern is "Y" type at the top of cylinder and reverse "Y" type at the bottom of cylinder and weak reverse flow exists at the top of cylinder along cylinder center line. Otherwise, the other engine's flow pattern changes from "Y" type to "T" type at the top of cylinder during compression.
The motion of single-rod cylinder is typically controlled by the directional control valve. In some case, the hydraulic system should be energized by the man power and at the same time the motion of a cylinder is controlled manually. It may be confusing for a man to do two things at the same time. The solution is to make up the closed hydraulic circuit with the bi-directional pump and single-rod cylinder without using a directional control valve. In the case of single-rod cylinder, the flows at the rod side and head side are so different that several valves should be installed to make the motion of single-rod cylinder possible. The hydraulic system is composed of a bi-directional pump, a single-rod cylinder, pilot operated check valves, a check valve and a counter balance valve for the purpose of actuating the lifter. The characteristics of a suggested system are analysized mathematically and numerically.
This paper is the second of 2 companion papers which investigate in-cylinder swirl generation characteristics according to inlet valve angle. Two DOHC 4 valve engines, one has wide intake valve angle and the other has narrow valve angle, were used to compare the characteristics of swirl motion generation in the cylinder. One intake port was deactivated to induce swirl flow. A PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) was applied to measure in-cylinder velocity field according to inlet valve angle during intake stroke. The results show that the flow patterns of narrow valve engine are much more stable and well arranged compared with the normal engine over the entire intake and compression stroke except early intake stage, and very strong swirl motion is generated at the end of compression stage in this engine nevertheless using straight port which is unfavorable for swirl generating. In the wide valve angle one, however, strong swirl motion induced during intake stroke is destroyed as the compression progresses.
Compression pressure of individual cylinder and valve timing have big influence on combustion pressure, indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP), emission, vibration, combustion noise and many other combustion parameters. Therefore, uniformity of compression pressure and valve timing became one of most important engine design and production standard. Conventional method to evaluate compression pressure uniformity is to measure each cylinder pressure by mechanical pressure gage during cranking. This conventional method causes inaccuracy of cylinder pressure measurement because of different cranking speed results from battery status and also causes high manhour and cost. To check valve timing, related FEAD parts should be disassembled and timing mark should be checked manually. This study describes and suggests new methodology to measure compression pressure by analysis of start motor current and to check valve timing by cylinder pressure with high accuracy. With this new methodology, possibility to detect leaky cylinder and wrong valve timing was observed.
The in-cylinder flow field of gasoline engine comprises unsteady compressible turbulent flows caused by the intake port, combustion chamber geometry and the change of the spatial shape. Thus the quantitative analysis of the in-cylinder bulk flow plays an important role in the improvement of engine performances and the reduction of exhaust emission. The influences of tumble intensifying valve (TIV) and swirl intensifying valve (SIV), and various intake-flow conditions are compared with the tumble ratio obtained by the measured results of the in-cylinder gas flow. In order to obtain the quantitative analysis of the in-cylinder gas flows of gasoline engine this investigation applied the particle tracking method to the analysis of gas flow characteristics. Various intake conditions such as tumble and swirl intensifying valve, the deactivated condition of one valve among two intake valves, and the other factors of gas flow are considered.

The spool displacement signal of a directional control valve, including the servo valve, can be considered as the standard signal to measure dynamic characteristics. When the spool displacement signal is not available, the velocity signal of a metering cylinder piston can be used. In this study, the frequency response characteristics of the metering cylinder are investigated for the spool displacement input. The transfer functions of the servo valve-metering system are derived taking into consideration the oil inertia effect in the transmission lines. The theoretical results of the transfer functions are verified through computer simulations and experiments. The oil inertia effect in the transmission lines was found to have a very significant effect on the bandwidth frequency of the servo valve-metering cylinder system. In order to more precisely measure the dynamic characteristics of a servo valve, the metering cylinder should be set up to minimize the oil inertia effect by increasing the inner diameters of the transmission lines or shortening their lengths.
Lubrication characteristics between a cylinder block and a valve plate for high speed bent-axis type hydraulic pump play an important role in volumetric efficiency and durability of pump. In this paper, a finite element method is presented for the computation of the pressure distribution between a cylinder block and a valve plate for high speed bent-axis type hydraulic pump. Also, a Runge-Kutta method is applied to simulate the cylinder block dynamics of three-degrees of freedom motion. From the results of computation, we can draw two major conclusions. One is related to the fluid film characteristics between a cylinder block and a valve plate and the other is related to the average leakage that is determined by the pressure gradient and the clearance near the discharge port. The numerical results of cylinder block dynamics were compared with the experimental results using eddy-current type gap sensors those are fixed at a pump housing.
This experimental study was mainly investigated on the swirl flow characteristics in the cylinder generated by a helical intake port. LDA system was used for the measurement of in-cylinder velocity fields. Tangential and axial velocity profiles, with varying valve lifts, valve eccentricity ratios and axial distance, were measured. When the intake valve was set in the cylinder center, we could find that in-cylinder swirl flow fields were composed of a forced vortex motion and a free vortex motion in the vicinity of the cylinder center and the cylinder wall respectively. In case of valve eccentricity ratio, N$_{y}$ = 0.45, the vortex flow which rotates to the opposite direction of a main rotating flow in the cylinder was found. And the reverse flow toward the cylinder head surface was also found in axial velocity profile and it showed the tendency of the linear decrease in the region of 0.leq.Y/B.leq.1.2.2.
