Electrochemical Study on the Coumarin Derivatives

  • The electrochemical reduction of coumarin derivatives in 0.1M TEAP acetonitrile solution was investigated by the direct current, differential pulse polarography, cyclic voltammetry and controlled potential coulometry. The electrochemical reduction of 7-acetoxy-4-bromomethyl-coumarin(ABMC) was proceeded as an irreversible three steps(-0.58, -1.63 and -2.25 volts) of electrochemical transfer before chemical reaction. The solution color turned to yellow after the carboxyl group was reduced at 2nd step(-1.63 volts vs. Ag-AgCl) and the change in color was independant to the bromo group. Upon the basis of the results on the products analysis and the interpretaton of polarograms, a possible electrochemical reaction mechanism was suggested.

Investigation of the electrode reaction of cytochrome c and pyrroliquinoline quinone at self-assembled monolayers of amino acid

  • Self-Assembled monolayers of carboxyl-terminated alkanethiols, which is negatively charged in pH 7.0, were usually used to facilitate the electron transfer between the positively charged protein and the electrode. In case of L-cysteine, as it has both positive and negative group, it can be a candidate for a new modifier to facilitate positively charged protein or negatively charged protein. Our investigation of L-cysteine shows that the electron transfer occurs successfully to both cytochrome c (cyt. c) and pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ). By using 1-ethyl-3-(3-dime-thlyaminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC), we made a covalent bond between cyt. c and monolayer. Then PQQ was electrostatically adsorbed to the same monolayer. Cyclic voltammograms show that both molecules do not interfere each other and electron transfer is appreciable.

  • The positive active material for polymer film battery was prepared by using Polyphenylenediamine(PPD) synthesized in our lab. and 2.5-dimercapto-1, 3, 4-thiadiazole(DMcT) in various mixture ratio. The transference measurement of surface morphology and thermal stability of prepared composite film was carried out by using SEM and TGA, respectively. Electrocyhemical property and electrical conductivity of composite film were also measured by using cyclic voltammetry and four-probe method in dry box, respectively. The thermal stability of prepared composite film is more than 20$0^{\circ}C$. The electrical conductivity of composite film increased and showed the highest value(about 3 S/cm)when doped at 0.4% LiClO$_4$solution. And we could confirm that DMcT effect on reactiviation of PPD through cyclic voltammogram.

The electrochromic properties of nickel oxide films (니켈산화물 박막의 전기적착색특성)

  • Nickel oxide films were prepard by using the electron beam evaporation technique. Coloring and bleaching experiments for cyclic durability were repeated in KOH electrolyte by cyclic voltammetry. Visible spectrophtometry was used to assess the stability of the transmittance in the degraded films. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results showed that the grain surface are oxygen-rich compared to the grain interiors in a NiO film. Open circuit memory of colored films is about 400hours in lN KOH. The rate of self discharge was evaluated by measuring the transmittance at 550nm of a fully oxidized NiO film. The rate of self discharge was increased polynomially with time and the film is nearly bleached after about 400hours. It was also found that the degraded film by repeated cycles in the KOH solution changed the grain shape of film surface The film prepared under a vacuum pressure of $3\times10^{-4}$ mbar was found to be rather stable when subjected to the repeated coloring and bleaching cycles in KOH electrolyte. Band theory applied to explain the electrochromic mechanism was discussed.

  • The chemical behavior and properties on the redox state of environmental pollutant has been investigated by electrochemical methods. We carried out to measure the variations in the redox reaction of differential pulse polarogram and cyclic voltammogram. The results observed the influences on redox potential and current of various factors with temperature and pH. These were established factors as the effect of the redox reaction. It can be clearly recognized that the electrode reaction are from qusi-reversible to irreversible processes. Also, it was mixing with reaction current controlled. The bits-phenol A in the waste water was made to compound with cobalt ion and it take away from the separation into compound. The $Co(BPA)_2$ compound was not found to be dissociation in waste water. However, this compound is avery unstable(K=1.02) and for a while, it was to be a dissociation. Therefore, we believed that it was likely to a toxic substance.

  • Polypyrrole(PPy) nanotubules were formed within template pores by chemical synthesis using $FeCl_3$ as an oxidant. The oxidation peak of PPy nanotubules in the cyclic voltammogram was observed at about 2.8V and 3.3V vs. $Li/Li^+$, while in the case of PPy film, that was observed at about 3.0V. It suggests that the electron hopping on the main chain of PPy nanotubules was improved. When the PPy nanotubules was used to a cathode of lithium secondary battery, we obtained discharge capacity as much as 27 mAh/g, and initial coulomb efficiency by 90%. We expect that the capacity can be improved by further study.

  • The cis-hex-3-ene-1,5-diynyl-bridged diiron compound 3, [(η$^{5}$ - $C_{5}$ M $e_{5}$ ) Fe(dppe)]$_2$($\mu$-C≡C-CH=CH-C≡C), have been prepared and characterized by cyclic voltammetry(CV), and electronic spectroscopy (UV-VIS and near-IR, NMR). From the results, compound 3 show two well resolved, single-electron, reversible oxidation waves by CV, and comproportionation constant(Kc) calculated from the CV data for compound 3. The Mixed-valence (MV) radical cation 3$^{+}$ show strong absorptions in the near IR, 1586 nm, and this band is more readily assigned as MV $\pi$-$\pi$ band of delocalized complex (Robin-Day Mixed-valence Class III), and the $H_{ab}$ , effective coupling parameter are most consistent with electronic delocalization.

Development of Single-layer-structured Glucose Biosensor

  • In this paper, we fabricated a low-cost glucose sensor with a simpler structure and fabrication process than the existing glucose sensor. The currently used glucose sensor has a three-layer structure with upper, middle, and bottom plates; here, we fabricated a single-layer glucose sensor using only a printing and dispensing process. We successfully fabricated the glucose sensor using a simple method involving the formation of an electrode and insulator layer through a 2- or 3-step printing process on plastic or paper film, followed by the dispensing of glucose oxidase solution on the electrode. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and cyclic amperometry (CA) measurements were used to evaluate the characteristics of the fabricated single-layer glucose sensor. Also, its sensitivity was analyzed through glucose-controlled blood measurements. Hence, a low-cost single-layer glucose sensor was fabricated with evaluation of its characteristics demonstrating that it has useful application in medicine.

  • Electrochemical behaviors of Nb ion in the $LiCl-KCl-NbCl_5$ molten salt were examined. Cyclic voltammograms with different scan rates and scan range at $450^{\circ}C$ showed possible electrochemical redox reactions which were identified by comparison to the literature data. Peak potentials for each redox reaction were consistent with the literature, but some redox reactions were not clearly defined due to the formation of subchloride compound in chloride salt. The electrochemical behaviors of Nb ion related to the subchloride formation as well as Nb metal deposition will be investigated for the future work.

Characteristics of hydrogen adsorption peaks of electrodes containing ionic liquid for high temperature polymer electrolyte fuel cells (고온 연료전지용 이온성 액체를 함유한 전극의 수소 흡착피크의 특성)

  • In this study, we prepared electrodes containing ionic liquid for high temperature polymer electrolyte fuel cells. Effects of ILs on electrochemical properties of the electrodes were investigated carrying out measurement of cyclic voltammograms of the various electrodes with the content of IL in a strong supporting electrolyte. As the ILs content increased in electrodes, electrochemical surface area(ESA) decreased due to the leakage of ILs from Nafion ionomer. In addition, two case of cyclic voltammograms under two simulated environment, i.e. IL leakage from Nafion ionomer in I) electrode and ii) polymer electrolyte, were investigated. As a result, IL leakage from polymer electrolyte showed worse results in electrochemical properties of the electrode.
