  • Fieldbus system should be designed by considering the number of sensors/actors(actuators+ controllers) and their sampling times. But the number of sensors/actors and which are connected to the network bus can be varied by addition and/or fault of the field devices. That variation decreases the efficiency of system which is off-line designed optimally. This paper proposes an algorithm that ensures transmission of cyclic data even though there is the number change in the field devices. We assign the different weight values to cyclic data and acyclic data. By simulation and experiment, the cyclic and acyclic data are processed via the proposed network, and the results are compared with those of the Profibus system. It is shown that the proposed algorithm is more robust with the uncertainties of the field devices of the control system.

  • An integral crank driven Stirling cryocooler is solidly based on concepts of direct IR detector mounting on the cryocooler's cold finger, and the integral construction of the cryocooler and Dewar envelope. Performance factors of the cryocooler depend on operating conditions of the cryocooler such as a cyclic mean pressure of the working fluid, a rotational speed of driving mechanism, a thermal environment, a targeted operation temperature and etc.. At given charging condition of helium gas, the cyclic mean pressure of helium gas in the cryocooler changes with temperatures of the cold end and the environment. In this study, effects of the cyclic mean pressure of helium gas on performances of the Stirling cryocooler were investigated by numerical analyses using the Sage software. The simulation model takes into account thermodynamic losses due to an inefficiency of regenerator, a pressure drop, a shuttle heat transfer and solid conductions. Simulations are performed for the performance variation according to the cyclic mean pressure induced by the temperature of the cold end and the environment. This paper presents P-V works in the compression and expansion space, cooling capacity, contribution of losses in the expansion space.

  • A small-sized industrial diesel engine was converted to a spark ignited engine and then adapted for fuelling with natural gas. After conversion work, general combustion characteristics of the gas engine(such as ignition delay, main and total combustion durations, and heat release characteristics) were studied as a functio of major engine operating variables such as air to fuel ratio, spark timing, and spark plug type. Some other studies on cyclic variation characteristics in IMEP, Pmax and (dp/dφ)max, and also optimum combustion phasing angle were performed.

  • Static and cyclic fatigue tests were carried out for alumina specimen to study the statistical analyses (normal, lognormal and Weibull distribution) of fatigue lifetime data and nominal initial crack length data. Fatigue lifetime data followed Weibull distribution better than normal or lognormal distribution, for the shape parameter of the notched specimen was larger than that of the unnotched specimen. The nominal initial crack length data obtained from fatigue lifetime followed the lognormal and Weibull distribution better than normal distribution, for the coefficient of variation of the unnotched specimen was larger than that of the notched specimen, and shape parameter of unnotched specimen was smaller than that of the notched specimen.

  • In mixed-model production systems, various models of products are produced alternately on the same production line. When the total number of models or the total production quantity is large, it takes a long time to determine the production sequence of the products. In this paper, we will show that in case of product rate variation problem (PRV) problem with nonidentical symmetric convex discrepancy function, an optimum sequence can be obtained by repeating an optimum sequence in a reduced subproblem.

  • The cyclic variations can be characterized by the variations in different type of parameters. These parameters may be grouped into four main categories: pressure-related parameters, combustion-related parameters, flame front-related parameters, and exhaust gas-related parameters. One of the resultant effects of the cycle-by-cycle variation in the combustion process, which is the most important with regard to the engine performance characteristics, is the cycle-by-cycle variation in IMEP. This paper uses the repetitive discharge igniter, which can change the ignition energy easily, to study on idle stability in a spark ignition engine. From this device, the 6 number of spark and 0.20 ms spark interval, it is very available for the idle stability.

  • Rock salt is a near-perfect material for gas storage repositories due to its excellent ductility and low permeability. Gas storage in rock salt layers during gas injection and gas production causes the stress redistribution surrounding the cavity. The triaxial cyclic loading and unloading tests for rock salt were performed in this paper. The elastic-plastic deformation behaviour of rock salt under cyclic loading was observed. Rock salt experienced strain hardening during the initial loading, and the irreversible deformation was large under low stress station, meanwhile the residual stress became larger along with the increase of deviatoric stress. Confining pressure had a significant effect on the unloading modulus for the variation of mechanical parameters. Based on the theory of elastic-plastic damage mechanics, the evolution of damage during cyclic loading and unloading under various confining pressure was described.

  • Cylinder-pressure based combustion analysis provides a mechanism through which a combustion researcher can understand the combustion process. This paper was to identify the most significant sources of cycle-to-cycle combustion variability in a spark ignition engine at idle. To analyse the cyclic variation in the test engine, the burn parameters are determined on a cycle-to-cycle basis through analysis of the engine pressure data. The burn rate analysis program was used in the analysis of the data. Burn parameters were used to determine the variations in the input parameter-i.e., fuel, air, residual mass, and so on.

  • In order to investigate the dynamic behavior of weathered granite soils before and after freezing-thawing, cyclic triaxial tests were conducted for the specimens not only with the variation of silt contents within 20% but with plasticity index within 20%. As the results, the dynamic shear modulus of weathered granite soils decreased with increasing silt contents. However, the change in damping ratio was negligible. The influence of freezing-thawing on shear modulus and damping ratio was minimal for the granite soils with variation of silt contents. For the case of the weathered soils with variation of plasticity index, the shear modulus increased with plasticity index within 20%, while the modulus decreased remarkably after freezing-thawing.

  • This paper presents the details of an advanced Finite Element (FE) analysis of a plane steel portal frame with semi-rigid beam-to-column connections subjected cyclic loading. In spite of several component models on cyclic behaviour of connections presented in the literature, works on numerical investigations on cyclic behaviour of full scale frames are rather scarce. This paper presents the evolution of an FE model which deals comprehensively with the issues related to cyclic behaviour of full scale steel frames using ABAQUS software. In the material modeling, combined kinematic/isotropic hardening model and isotropic hardening model along with Von Mises criteria are used. Connection non-linearity is also considered in the analysis. The bolt slip which happens in friction grip connection is modeled. The bolt load variation during loading, which is a pivotal issue in reality, has been taken care in the present model. This aspect, according to the knowledge of the authors, has been first time reported in the literature. The numerically predicted results using the methodology evolved in the present study, for the cyclic behaviour of a cantilever beam and a rigid frame, are validated with experimental results available in the literature. The moment-rotation and deflection responses of the evolved model, match well with experimental results. This proves that the methodology for evolving the steel frame and connection model presented in this paper is closer to real frame behaviour as evident from the good comparison and hence paves the way for further parametric studies on cyclic behaviour of flexibly connected frames.
