  • The knock in a spark ignition engine has been investigated to avoid the damage to the engine and unpleasant feeling caused by the pressure waves propagating across the combustion chamber. Knock intensity and knock onset angle were used as physical parameters to quantify the knock characteristics. The knock intensity is defined as a peak to peak value of the bank pass filtered combustion pressure signal and the knock onset angle is determined as the crank angle at which this signal exceeded the threshold level on each cycle. The cyclic variation of knock in four valve single cylinder engine was investigated with these two parameters. The location of autoignition was also examined by ion probes in the cylinder head gasket and squish region in the combustion chamber. For this measurement, a single cylinder engine was modified to accept the pressure transducer, 18 ion probes in the squish region and 8 ion probes in the specially designed PCB (Printed \ulcornerCircuit Board) cylinder head gasket.

  • In this paper, effects of thermoelastic stress by using lock-in thermography was measured in the cantilever beam. In experiment, a circular holed plate was applied to analyze variation of transient stress under the condition of repeated cyclic loading. And the finite element modal analysis as computational work was performed. According to the surface temperature obtained from infrared thermography, the stress of the nearby hole was predicted based on thermoelastic equation. As results, each stress distributions between 2nd and 3rd vibration mode were qualitatively and quantitatively investigated, respectively. Also, dynamic stress concentration factors according to the change of vibration amplitude were estimated for the resonance frequency.

  • Mixture formation in the cylinder of a lean bum engine has been observed by Laser Induced Fluorescence technique. XeCl laser (308nm) was used to produce a laser sheet. 3-pentanone has been added to iso-octane fuel to produce fluorescence, the intensity of which is proportional to the concentration of the fuel. The laser sheet was introduced through the piston window and the fuel distribution in the vertical plane was observed through a side window. Comparison has been made for the cases of selected fuel injection timing as 0, 360, 405, and 450 CA. For the case of 0 and 360 CA injection, uniform fuel distribution in the combustion chamber has been obtained at the ignition time which is favorable for the high load mode. And the late injection cases, 405 and 450 CA, revealed the stratified formation of rich mixture around the spark plug. That extends the lean misfire limit and reduces cyclic variation in the low load mode.

  • Carbon paste electrodes, modified with 5,6,14,15-dibenzo-1,4-dioxa-8,12-diazacyclopentadeca-5,14-diene containing different ligating atoms of oxygen and nitrogen, have been employed for the voltammetric determination of Ag(I) ion from aqueous solution. The voltammetric response was characterized with respect to paste composition, preconcentration method, kind of anion, variation of pH, Ag(I) ion concentration, and possible interferences. Linear calibration curves were obtained for Ag(I) ion concentration ranging from $3.0{\times}10^{-6}M$ to $8.0{\times}10^{-5}M$, and detection limit was $8.5{\times}10^{-7}M$.

  • The electrochemical oxidation behavior of p-cresol on platinum anode had been investigated by cyclic voltammetric method for the variation of concentration, scan rate of potential, temperature and pH of electrolyte. The oxidation potential of p-cresol was dependent on the electrolyte until the pH=11.5, but in basic solution over its, it was held at o.40V(vs. SCE). A diffusion was rate determining step of oxidation as irreversible reaction by the transfer atone electron. The current of peak was proportional to concentration of p-cresol until the 0.1N and optimum concentration was found to be about 0.1N. The activation energy was calculated for 5.8kcal/mol from the plot of log $I_l$ vs. 1/T.

  • 60% Pt on Vulcan XC-72 with similar Pt sizes to fuel cell grade Pt black was investigated by $\^$13/C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), cyclic voltammery (CV), transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Experiments were carried out on electrochemically cleaned samples as well as as-received. The TEM and CV results showed that the average particle sizes were changed by cleaning. However, the chemical shift ($\delta$$\_$G/) of $\^$13/C of $\^$13/CO absorbed on Pt surfaces did not show any appreciable variation with particle size change as did in Pt black. These results indicate that a combination of different analytic techniques is essential to understand the properties of the metal particle catalysts and that the presence of carbon black support strongly influences the NMR data, probably through metal-support interaction.

  • An experimental study was conducted on the effect of compressor capacity control range of heat pump on the seasonal energy efficiency ratio with variation of the maximum and minimum compressor input frequencies. To obtain seasonal energy efficiency ratio, steady state test at the maximum, minimum and intermediate compressor speed and cyclic test at the minimum compressor speed should be conducted. Maximum input frequency was varied to 95Hz, 105Hz, and 115Hz, and the minimum input frequency was varied to 35Hz, 45Hz, and 55Hz. The seasonal energy efficiency ratio increased as the input frequency of the compressor decreased. The maximum input frequency had only slight effects on the SEER.

  • This paper presents an individual cylinder spark advance control strategy based upon the location of peak pressure (LPP) in spark ignition engines using artificial neural networks. The LPP is estimated using a feedforward multi-layer perceptron network (MLPN), which needs only five samples of output voltage from the cylinder pressure sensor. The cyclic variation of LPP restricts the gain of the feedback controller, and results in poor regulation performance during the transient operation of the engine. The transient performance of the spark advance controller is improved by adding a feedforward controller which reflects the abrupt changes of the engine operating conditions such as engine speed and manifold absolute pressure (MAP)...

  • KIC6118779 is an over-contact binary system having a short orbital period of about 0.36 days. The photometric data for this system are acquired by the observations of Kepler mission in the long cadence mode having a time resolution of about 30 minutes. It means that the Kepler light curves of the system may be strongly affected by phase smearing effect and the analysis of them without consideration of the phase smearing effect may result in wrong stellar properties. Additionally, this system also shows dynamical variation of light curve resulting from spot activity. For all those reasons, it is difficult to investigate KIC6118779, and the investigation should be carried out carefully. In this presentation, we introduce the phase smearing effect and carry out the light curve modeling with the 2015 version of the Wilson-Devinney binary code considering the phase smearing effect. Our results show that the system is a deep over contact binary system and has extremely low mass ratio of about 0.12. Moreover our spot modeling implies the cyclic migration of a big cool spot on the massive component.
