Factors Affecting the Dissolution Behavior of Metals from Binary Alloys

  • The strategy of recovering metals from scrap is in general much different from primary sources. One of the main differences between the treatment of scrap and that of primary sources lies with the fact that metals are frequently associated with other met-als to form alloys in scrap, while metals occur in primary sources as oxides or sulfides. In this paper, factors affecting the dis-solution behavior of metals from various alloy systems have been reviewed and discussed. Specific examples have been drawn from Au/Ag, Au/cu and Ag/cu systems. Results of the dissolution behavior of various metals from these alloys have been reviewed and compared to the dissolution behavior of single metal systems in various lixiviants such as acids, cyanide and ammonia. It has been observed that the presence of other metals in alloys would significantly affect the dissolution rate of the metal in question. The leaching behavior of metals from homogeneous alloys relies on the chemical interaction between atoms in the lattice of the alloys, while that from heterogeneous alloys is affected by galvanic interaction established in the solution The manner in which the dissolution of a certain metal is influenced by surrounding metals has been discussed in terms of pas-sive and noble nature of the metal in relation to the neighboring metals. The role of the standard electrochemical Potential of these metals on the selective dissolution for a given lixiviant has also been discussed.

A Study on the Recycling of Metals and Removal of Organics By Electrochemical Treatment of Mixed Waste Water of Surface Finishing Industry (표면처리 공정에서 발생하는 혼합 폐수의 전기화학적 처리에 의한 중금속의 재활용 및 유기물의 제거에 관한 연구)

  • Cyclic sweep voltametry was performed to investigate the electrochemical behavior of heavy metal ions and the organic additives in surface finishing process. And electrolysis using parallel plate electrode electrolyzer was carried out to simulate the treatment of real waste water. Results showed that more than 99 percent of Cu was recovered and selective recovery of Cu in mixed waste water was possible, but the possibility of economical recovery of Ni and Cr were very low due to the evolution of hydrogen gas. Electrochemical oxidation of cyanide and organic additives on anode showed very excellent removal rate. The complete removal of several hundred ppm of cynide was possible within several tens minutes and organics within 2 or 3 hours. Even in case of concentrate waste water, the complete removal of COD by using NaCl and air stirring seemed to be possible.

Plant-growth promoting traits of bacterial strains isolated from button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) media

  • A diverse group of plant-growth promoting bacteria were isolated in button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) media to investigate the plant-growth promoting traits of compounds including indole acetic acid (IAA), ammonia, 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid deaminase, siderophore, and hydrogen cyanide. Twenty-one bacterial strains showing positive effects for all the test traits were selected and classified to confirm bacterial diversity in the media habitat. Plant-growth promoting traits of the isolates were also assessed. All strains produced IAA ranging from 20 ㎍/mL to 250 ㎍/mL. Most of the isolates produced more than 80% siderophore. Four strains (Pantoea sp., PSB-08, Bacillus sp., PSB-13, Pseudomonas sp., PSB-17, and Enterobacter sp., PSB-21) showed outstanding performances for all the tested traits. In a bioassay of these four strains using mung bean plant, the best growth performances (23.16 cm, 22.98 cm, 2.27 g/plant, and 1.83 g/plant for shoot length, root length, shoot dry weight, and root dry weight, respectively) were obtained from the plants co-inoculated with Bacillus sp., PSB-13. The resultant data indicate that button mushroom media have got a diverse group of bacteria with plant growth promoting abilities. Thus, the media could be a good recycling resource for using to an effective bio-fertilizer.
