  • An Experiment was carried out to study burr minimization in drilling on the inclined exit surface. Several different drills, exit surface angles and cutting conditions were selected to determine their influences on burr formation. In drilling operation, there are not only flat exit surfaces but also inclined exit surfaces which is described as inclination angle. Inclination of exit surface causes a quiet different burr formation when comparing with flat surface. Burr formation mechanisms are analyzed according to the drill geometries and cutting conditions. Several schemes for burr minimization on inclined exit surface were proposed. Burr geometry in each drill and cutting condition are measured by laser measurement system.

  • When cutting 2.0cm-thick red oak and hard maple with an air-jet-assisted carbon-dioxide laser of 2kW output power, maximum feed speed at the point of full penetration of the beam decreased with increasing the angle between grain and cutting direction. Feed speed averaged 3.75 and 3.38 meters per minute for red oak and hard maple, respectively. Gray-level of laser-cut surfaces were analyzed by image analysis system. The highest gray level of laser-cut surface was obtained when red oak was cut parallel to grain by laser. Surface profiler was used to scan the sawn and laser-cut surfaces. Center line average roughnesses of laser-cut surfaces were higher than those of sawn surfaces. Scanning electron micrographs showed the cell walls which were melted by laser.

  • In this study, chip-tool friction and shear characteristics of cold drawn free machining steels in turning were assessed. To do this, a newly developed equivalent oblique cutting model was adopted. And for comparison with those of free machining steels, chip-tool friction and shear characteristics of conventional carbon steels were also investigated. The Pb-S free machining steel shows superior machinability to others. In case of the Bi-S free machining steel, the shear stress and the specific friction energy are relatively lower than those of conventional carbon steels, but its shear strain is relatively high, so it does not show any remarkable improvement of machinability.

  • Although the net-shape molding of composites is generally recommended, molded composites frequently requires cutting or grinding due to the dimensional inaccuracy for precision machine elements. During the composite machining operations such as cutting and grinding, the temperature at the grinding area may increase beyond the allowed limit due to the low thermal conductivity of composites, which might degrade the matrix of composite. Therefore, in this work, the temperature at the grinding point during surface grinding of carbon fiber epoxy composite was measured. The grinding temperature and surface roughness were also measured to investigate the surface grinding characteristics of the composites. The experiments were performed both under dry and wet grinding conditions with respect to cutting speed, feed speed, depth of cut and stacking angle. From the experimental investigation, the optimal conditions for the composite surface grinding were suggested.

  • Interactive Graphic Robotics Integrated Programming(IGRIP) can handle various types of robot models and can exchange graphic or numerical data easily with other CAD software. In a cutting process of shape-steels, however. IGRIP is inconvenient because the users must generate all the tag points manually. In this study we developed an automation program module in order to generate the tag points automatically in IGRIP This program can read and analyze the macro data containing the information for cutting processes of shape-steels and can generate automatically the parts, the devices, the tag points and the Graphic Simulation Language(GSL) program files useful in IGRIP.

  • Theoretical considerations in the development of new cutting tool materials for high speed machining is presented. The progressive wear of cutting tools is assumed to consist of the abrasive and solution components as major modes. Theoretical calculations of relative wear rates between various tool materials based on the two modes are possible using their hardness and solubility data. Assuming cementite as the major hard particles in machining steels, relative wear rates of possible tool materials were calculated. The results indicate that $Al_{2}$O$_{3}$ in oxides, HfN in nitrides and HfC in carbides are the optimal tool materials from the view point of mechanical and thermochemical wear resistance. And several methods for improving the fracture toughness of the above tool materials are suggested.

  • An interactive multicriteria method, which is called the Modified Pairwise Comparison Stochastic Cutting Plane (MPCSCP) method, is proposed for determining the best levels of the integer decision variables needed to optimize a stochastic computer simulation with multiple response functions. MPCSCP combines good features from interactive tradeoff cutting plane methods and response surface methodologies. The proposed method uses a simple pairwise man-machine interaction and searches an integer space uniformly by using the experimental design which evaluates the decision space centering around an integer center point. The characteristics of the proposed method are investigated through an extensive computational study. The parameter configurations examined in the study are (1) variability of the sampling errors, (2) the size of experimental design, (3) the relaxation of cutting planes, and (4) the levels of decision maker's inconsistency.

  • The vibration amplitude of boring bar is generally large at the tool tip, because it has the high length-diameter(L/D) ratio. A new dynamic cutting force model is presented by considering the change of shear angle under dynamic cutting. The boring bar is modelled as a cantilever with dynamic force acting at the tool end point. Based on this realistic continuous system model, the equation of motion of borring bar is solved by numerical computations. A good agreement is found between the proposed model and the experimental results.

  • Machining technique for optical crystals with single point diamond turning tool is reported in tills paper. The main factors influencing the machined surface quality are discovered and regularities of machining process are drawn. Optical crystals have found more and more important applications in the field of modern optics. Optical crystals are mostly brittle materials of poor machinability The traditional machining method is polishing which has many shortcomings such as low production efficiency, poor ability to be automatically controlled and edge effect of the workpiece. SPDT has been widely used in manufacturing optical reflectors of non-ferrous metals such as aluminum and copper which are easy to be machined for their proper ductility. But optical crystals being discussed here are characterized by their high brittleness which makes it difficult to obtain high quality optical surfaces on them. The purpose of our research is to find the optimum machining conditions for ductile cutting of optical crystals and apply the SPDT technique to the manufacturing of ultra precision optical components of brittle materials. As a result, the cutting force is steady, the cutting force range is 0.05-0.08N. The surface roughness is good when spindle is above 1400rpm, and feed rate is small. The influence of depth of cut is very small.
