  • A video segmentation algorithm, which can extract objects even with non-stationary backgrounds, is proposed in this work. The proposed algorithm is composed of three steps. First, we perform an initial segmentation interactively to build the probability density functions of colors per each macro block via kernel density estimation. Then, for each subsequent frame, we construct a coherence strip, which is likely to contain the object contour, by exploiting spatio-temporal correlations. Finally, we perform the segmentation by minimizing an energy function composed of color, coherence, and smoothness terms. Experimental results on various test sequences show that the proposed algorithm provides accurate segmentation results.

  • Interruption system with the transformer type superconducting fault current limiter(TSFCL) is proposed in this paper. The interruption system with a TSFCL is a technology that it maximizes the interruption function of a mechanical DC circuit breaker using a transformer and a superconducting fault current limiter. By a TSFCL, the system limits the fault current till the breakable current range in the fault state. Therefore, the fault current could be cut off by a mechanical DC circuit breaker. The Interruption system with a TSFCL were designed using PSCAD/EMTDC. In addition, the Interruption system with a TSFCL was applied to the DC test circuit to analyze characteristics of a current-limiting and a interruption operation. The simulation results showed that the Interruption system with a TSFCL interrupted the fault current in a stable when a fault occurred. Also, The current-limiting rate of the Interruption system with a TSFCL was approximately 69.55%, and the interruption time was less than 8 ms.

  • We calculate the probability to form giant radio halos (${\~}$ 1 Mpc size) as a function of the mass of the host clusters by using a Statistical Magneto-Turbulent Model (Cassano & Brunetti, these proceedings). We show that the expectations of this model are in good agreement with the observations for viable values of the parameters. In particular, the abrupt increase of the probability to find radio halos in the more massive galaxy clusters ($M {\ge} 2{\times}10^{15} M_{\bigodot}$) can be well reproduced. We calculate the evolution with redshift of such a probability and find that giant radio halos can be powered by particle acceleration due to MHD turbulence up to z${\~}$0.5 in a ACDM cosmology. Finally, we calculate the expected Luminosity Functions of radio halos (RHLFs). At variance with previous studies, the shape of our RHLFs is characterized by the presence of a cut-off at low synchrotron powers which reflects the inefficiency of particle acceleration in the case of less massive galaxy clusters.

  • We conducted an extremely wide field survey of z ${\~}$ 6 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) to precisely derive their bright end surface density overcoming the bias due to cosmic variance. We selected out LBG candidates in the Subaru/ XMM-Newton Deep Survey Field (SXDS) over the total of ${\~}1.0\;deg^2$ sky area down to $z_{AB} = 26.0 ({\ge}3{\sigma},\;2'.0 aperture)$ using i' - z' > 1.5 color cut. This sample alone is likely to be contaminated by M/L/T dwarfs, low-z elliptical galaxies, and z ${\~}$ 6 quasars. To eliminate these interlopers, we estimated their numbers using an exponential disk star count model, catalogs of old ellipticals in the SXDS and other field, and a z${\~}$6 quasar luminosity function. The finally derived surface density of z ${\~}$ 6 LBGs was 165 $mag^{-1}\;deg^{-2}$ down to $z_{AB}$ = 26.0 and shows good agreement with previous results from the narrower field survey of HST GOODS.

  • Bentonite slurries in a slurry wall construction must fulfill a stabilizing function by forming impermeable membrane (surface cake and penetrated cake) on the excavated soil faces. Thus problems are occurring in practice for the construction of diaphram walls and cut-off walls with a low permeability for wastes disposal areas in some deep excavations or different grounds. In this paper, the fundamental mechanics of fluid loss and filter cake formation in various soil beds are investigated using large scale laboratory apparatus. The sealing efficiency of filter cake from the large scale tests and the significance of fluid loss in a slurry trench are utilized for practical situation as a recommended design procedure.

  • Cloud detection and analysis from satellite images has been a topic of research in many atmospheric and environmental studies; however, it still is a challenging task for many reasons. In this paper, we propose a new method for cloud-type classification using fuzzy logic. Knowing that visible-light images of clouds contain thickness related information, while infrared images haves height-related information, we propose a two-layered fuzzy logic based on the input source to provide us with a relatively clear-cut threshold in classification. Traditional noise-removal methods that use reflection/release characteristics of infrared images often produce false positive cloud areas, such as fog thereby it negatively affecting the classification accuracy. In this study, we used the color information from source images to extract the region of interest while avoiding false positives. The structure of fuzzy inference was also changed, because we utilized three types of source images: visible-light, infrared, and near-infrared images. When a cloud appears in both the visible-light image and the infrared image, the fuzzy membership function has a different form. Therefore we designed two sets of fuzzy inference rules and related classification rules. In our experiment, the proposed method was verified to be efficient and more accurate than the previous fuzzy logic attempt that used infrared image features.

  • Spasmodic dysphonia is a focal laryngeal dystonia that results in involuntary spasms during speech. The etiology of spasmodic dysphonia is not yet defined, but it is presumed to be a neurological abnormality of central nervous system motor function. The treatment of choice for spasmodic dysphonia is botulinum toxin injection directly at the laryngeal muscles. However botulinum toxin injection requires repeated procedures. Many different kinds of surgical treatments have been introduced but the recurrence rate is still high. So we performed myomectomy with LASER and neurectomy with specially designed electrical surgical knife which can cut recurrent laryngeal nerve branch selectively with its noble curved section. We report a case of a 43-year-old male patient with spasmodic dysphonia treated by thyroarytenoid myoneurectomy.

  • To meet stringent LEV and ULEV emission standards, a considerable amount of development work was necessary to ensure suitable efficiency and durability of catalyst systems. The main challenge is to cut off the engine cold-start emissions. It is known that up to 80% of the total hydrocarbons(THC) are exhausted within the first five minutes in case of US FTP 75 cycle. Close-Coupled Catalyst(CCC) provides fast light-off temperature by utilizing the energy in the exhaust gas. However, if some malfunction occurred at engine operation and the catalyst temperature exceeds 1050$\^{C}$, the catalytic converter is deactivated and shows the poor conversion efficiency. This paper presents effEcts of engine operating conditions on catalytic converter temperature in a SI engine, which are the indications of catalytic deactivation. Exhaust gas temperature and catalyst temperature were measured as a function of air/fuel ratio, ignition timing and misfire rates. Additionally, light-off time was measured to investigate the effect of operating conditions. It was found that ignition retard and misfire can result in the deactivation of the catalytic converter, which eventually leads the drastic thermal aging of the converter. Significant reduction in light-off time can be achieved with proper control of ignition retard and misfire, which can reduce cold-start HC emissions as well.

  • Traditional theories of the tensile failure of paper have assumed that uniform strain progresses throughout the sheet until an imperfection within the structure causes a catastrophic break. The resistance to tensile elongation is assumed to be elastic , at first, throughout the structure, followed by an overall plastic yield. However, linear image strain analysis (LISA) has demonstrated that the yield in tensile loading of paper is quite non-uniform throughout the structure, Traditional theories have failed to define the flaws that trigger catastrophic failure. It was assumed that a shive or perhaps a low basis weight area filled that role. Studies of the fracture mechanics of paper have typically utilized a well-defined flaw around which yield and failure could be examined . The flaw was a simple razor cut normal to the direction of tensile loading. Such testing is labeled mode I analysis. The included fla in the paper was always normal to the tensile loading direction, never at another orientation . However, shives or low basis weight zones are likely to be at random angular orientations in the sheet. The effects of angular flaws within the tensile test were examined. The strain energy density theory and experimental work demonstrate the change in crack propagation from mode I to mode IIas the initial flaw angle of crack propagation as a function of the initial flaw angle is predicted and experimentally demonstrated.

  • This paper examines that is extracted certain information in forest areas within high resolution imagery based on wavelet transformation. First of all, study areas are selected one more species distributed spots refer to forest type map. Next, study area is cut 256 x 256 pixels size because of image processing problem in large volume data. Prior to wavelet transformation, five texture parameters (contrast, dissimilarity, entropy, homogeneity, Angular Second Moment (ASM≫ calculated by using Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM). Five texture images are set that shifting window size is 3x3, distance .is 1 pixel, and angle is 45 degrees used. Wavelet function is selected Daubechies 4 wavelet basis functions. Result is summarized 3 points; First, Wavelet transformation images derived from contrast, dissimilarity (texture parameters) have on effect on edge elements detection and will have probability used forest road detection. Second, Wavelet fusion images derived from texture parameters and original image can apply to forest area classification because of clustering in Homogeneous forest type structure. Third, for grading evaluation in forest fire damaged area, if data fusion of established classification method, GLCM texture extraction concept and wavelet transformation technique effectively applied forest areas (also other areas), will obtain high accuracy result.
