  • The research proposes seven elimination rules of redundant gates and blocks in Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) and Reliability Block Diagram (RBD). The computational complexity of cut sets and path sets is NP-hard. In order to reduce the complexity of Minimal Cut Set (MCS) and Minimal Path Set (MPS), the paper classifies generation algorithms. Moreover, the study develops six implementation steps which reflect structural importance (SI) and reliability importance (RI) from Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) that a priority of using the functional logic among components is to reduce (improve) the system unavailability (or availability). The proposed steps include efficient generation of state structure function by Rare Event Enumeration (REA). Effective use of importance measures, such as SI and ill measures, is presented based on the number and the size of MCS and MPS which is generated from the reference[5] of this paper. In addition, numerical examples are presented for practitioners to obtain the comprehensive understanding of six steps that is proposed in this research.

  • The research discusses interrelationship of structural and reliability importance measures which used in the probabilistic safety assessment. The most frequently used component importance measures, such as Birnbaum's Importance (BI), Risk Reduction (RR), Risk Reduction Worth (RRW), RA (Risk Achievement), Risk Achievement Worth (RAW), Fussel Vesely (FV) and Critically Importance (CI) can be derived from two structure importance measures that are developed based on the size and the number of Minimal Path Set (MPS) and Minimal Cut Set (MCS). In order to show an effectiveness of importance measures which is developed in this paper, the three representative functional structures, such as series-parallel, k out of n and bridge are used to compare with Birnbaum's Importance measure. In addition, the study presents the implementation examples of Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) metrics and alternating renewal process models with exponential distribution to calculate the availability and unavailability of component facility for improving system performances. System state structure functions in terms of component states can be converted into the system availability (unavailability) functions by substituting the component reliabilities (unavailabilities) for the component states. The applicable examples are presented in order to help the understanding of practitioners.

  • The use of recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO), a stimulator of erythropoiesis, banned in sports because of the medical risk associated with thrombosis. Due to analytical difficulties to differentiate between natural human EPO (hEPO) and rhEPO, blood parameters of erythropoiesis such as contents of hemoglobin (cut-off value <17.5 g/d l for man, and < 16.0 g/dl for women), hematocrit and reticulocytes (cut-off value <2.0%) were measured to focus the misuse of rhEPO. We conducted anti-doping test for 122 blood samples of the World Cup athletes. The mean values of key parameters are as follows; 14.5$\pm$1.0 g/dl for hemoglobin, 41.7$\pm$2.8% for hematocrit, and 1.3$\pm$0.4% for reticulocyte. Blood sample was found to be stable up to 8 hours for the reticulocyte measurement. In addition, the soluble transferrin receptor and ferritin levels were measured by immunoassay methods using plasma samples (n=28) in which the mean value was 0.8$\pm$0.5 $\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$ and 54.6$\pm$33.7 ng/$m\ell$, respectively. The results indicate that all samples tested were negative for the blood parameters of indirect anti-doping test for hEPO misuse. The statistical evaluation suggest that several other parameters such as red blood cell, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin and white blood cell could be considered as factors influencing hEPO function in addition to five parameters mentioned.

  • SAW filters of transversal type were fabricated on some piezoelectric substrates of the LN 128$^{\circ}$ Y-X, LN 64$^{\circ}$Y-X, Quartz ST-cut wafers through the simulation in which the number o: IDT and window function were changed for the required frequency, and the mask making. Their IDT spacing and width were 3 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, chip size was 4.462 $\times$ 2.086 mm$^2$, and they had double electrode transversal type IDTs. In addition to pure Al electrode devices, Ti thin films having the different thicknesses was introduced between the Al electrode and the substrate for improving the power resistance strength. They had 11-12 dB insertion losses similar to those of pure Al electrode SAW filters in case of LN 128$^{\circ}$ Y-X, LN 64$^{\circ}$ Y-X, meaning that Ti thin film was not detrimental to the insertion loss and general frequency properties. The filters had the center frequencies 162MHz for LN 128$^{\circ}$ Y-X, 186MHz for 64$^{\circ}$ Y-X, and 131MHz for Quartz ST-cut substrates.

  • Most of conventional ultrasonic transducers are constructed to generate either longitudinal or shear waves, but not both of them. We investigate the mechanism of dual mode transducers that generate both of the longitudinal and shear waves simultaneously with single PZT element. The study is aimed to find the optimally desired cut by examining the anisotropic piezoelectric properties. Theory predicts that a mixed P/S mode transducer can be constructed using a rotated Z-cut of PZT piezoelectric ceramics. We study the performance of a PZT element as a function of its rotation angle so that its efficiency is optimized to excite the two waves as much as equally strong. The results are verified by the waveform in pulse-echo computer simulation and experiments. When the transducer is subjected to impedance analysis, it shows two thickness mode resonances, each of which being a mixed P/S thickness mode. By examining wave speeds on E transmitter delay line receiver setup, it is confirmed that the transducer can transmit and detect both longitudinal and shear wave simultaneously.

  • Korean population is ecpected to reach about 50 million by year 2000. And per capita GNP might attain the $5,000 level. This is bound to have profound impact on housing. For one thing, population and income growth will accelerate new household formation thus increasing new housing needs. On the other, changes in the housing preference function in association with income growth and new way of life would mean increasing demand for better dwelling environment. In addition, by year 2000, there will be many more elderly households necessitating new approaches to housing. The question is whether or not Korea could cope with new housing perspectives. If Korean housing has made in the past some progress in housing quality, it has not been able to tackle the mounting housing shortage. This is attributable to the concentration of effective housing demand in the hands of upper income groups in association with skewed income distribution and sustained dwelling price hike. Korea needs some basic changes in housing policy. The public sector should produce much more small dwellings either for sales or renting. Second, mortgage loans should be expanded so as to increase the access to housing. Third, every thing must be done to cut down the dwelling price through tax cut, relaxation of some requlations, cyclical stabilization of dwelling construction and loan subsidies.

  • Recently to develop an automobile with better prosperities, many researches and investments have been executed. In this paper we intend to improve the automobile properties by reducing the weights of the engine without changing the dynamic characteristics. At first we perform the vibration analysis by the Substructure Synthesis Method and execute the exciting test for the engine model, and observe the coincidences of two results to confirm the reliability of the analyzing tools used. The weight minimization is performed by the Sensitivities of the Natural frequencies of the engine block. To decrease the engine weight ideally, the parts of the sensitivity zero are to be cut mainly, and the changing quantity of natural frequency by the cut is to be recovered by the structural modification for the parts with the good sensitivity. But, as actually the mathematical solution for the homogeneous problem(i.e. 0 object function) do not exist, we hereby redesign the block with much thinner thickness and recover the natural frequencies and natural modes to original structure's by the sensitivity analysis. And the Frequency Response Functions(FRF) are to be observed for the interesting points. In this analysis, the original thickness of the engine model has 8 mm of thickness, and the thickness redesigned is 5 mm and 6 mm. And we are to try to recover the 1, 2, 4, and 5 lower natural frequencies interested.

  • Background: Uric acid levels in urine are measured using urine specimens 24 hours or by uric acid glomerular filtration rate (UAGFR) with spot urine, which additionally requires a blood sample. This study aimed to investigate whether urinary uric acid creatinine ratio (UUACr) obtained by spot urine alone could be recognized as a substitute for UAGFR value, and hyperuricosuria can be screened by UUACr. UUACr is known to vary with age and regional differences. This study focused on the reference value of each value in Korean young populations. Method: We enrolled Korean subjects 1-20 years with normal kidney function, from a single hospital, classified into 5 age groups, 1-5 years, 6-8 years, 9-12 years, 13-15 years, and 16-20 years. We checked spot urine uric acid, creatinine and serum uric acid, creatinine levels on the same day from February 2014 to December 2018. We measured the average of UAGFR and UUACr in each groups. The UUACr cut-off value of the upper 2 standard deviation (SD) of UAGFR were taken. Results: The upper 2 SD of UUACr (mg/mg) and UAGFR (mg/dL) were determined in all age groups. UUACr decreased with grown up (P=0.000), but UAGFR were not statistically different among the groups. UUACr and UAGFR were not significantly different by gender. UUACr and UAGFR were positively correlated; UUACr cut-off value of upper 2 SD UAGFR (0.54 mg/dL) was 0.65 mg/mg in total age. Conclusions: UUACr could potentially be used to screen for hyperuricosuria.

  • The main objective of this study is to present a fast and reliable approach to predict the swelling potential of clay-bearing rocks. Investigations showed that there is a good correlation between the swelling potential of a rock and its desire to absorb water due to its clay content which could be measured using the "Contact Angle" test as one of the most common ways to determine the wettability. In this test, the angle between a water drop and the flat rock surface on which it rests is measured. The present method is very fast and returns repeatable results and requires minimal sample preparation. Only having a saw-cut surface of a sample with any shape is all one needs to perform this test. The logic behind this approach is that the swelling potential of a rock is a function of its mineral content and molecular structure, which are not only distributed in the bulk of the sample but also reflected on its surface. Therefore, to evaluate swelling behavior, it is not necessary to wait for a sample to get wet all the way to its "internal structure" (which, due to the low permeability of clay-bearing rocks, is very slow and time-consuming). Instead, one can have a good sense of swelling potential by studying its surface. Parametric studies on the effect of moisture content, porosity, and surface roughness on the contact angle measurements showed that using a saw-cut oven-dried sample is a convenient way to evaluate the swelling potential by this method.

  • This paper proposes methodologies for the development of radiation thermometer using InSb photo-detector of which spectral sensitivity is excellent over the wave length range of 2 .mu. m .approx. 5 .mu. m. The proposed radiation thermometer has broad measurement range from normal to high, up to more than 1000 .deg. C, with high accuracy, and can measure temperature on the material surface or heat emission noncontactely with high speed. Optical system was consisted of two convex lens with foruslength of 15.2mm for infrared lay focusing, Ge filter to cut the short wave length components and sapphire filter to cut the long wave length components. The cold shielded was installed in the whole surface of the light-absorbing element to remove the error- mometer, calibration using black body furnace which has temperature range of 90 .deg. C .approx. 1100 .deg. C was carried out, and temperature calaibration curve was obtained by exponential function curvefitting. The result shows maximum error less than 0.24%(640K .+-. 1.6K) over the measurement range of 90 .deg. C .approx. 700 .deg. C, and from this result the usefulness of the developed thermometer has been confirmed.
