Surfaces of many engineering structures, especially, those of ships are commonly made out of either single- or double-curved surfaces to meet functional requirements. The first step in the fabrication process of a three-dimensional design surface is unfolding or flattening the surface, otherwise known as planar development, so that manufacturers can determine the initial flat plate which is required to form the design shape. In this paper, an algorithm for optimal approximated development of a general curved surface, including both single- and double-curved surfaces, is established by minimizing the strain energy of deformation from its planar development to the design surface. The unfolding process is formulated into a constrained nonlinear programming problem, based on the deformation theory and finite element. Constraints are subjected to the characteristics of the fabrication method. And the design surface, or the curved shell plate is subdivided by automatic mesh generation.

The active vibration control of composite shell structure has been performed with the optimized sensor/actuator system. For the design of sensor/actuator system, a method based on finite element technique is developed. The nine-node Mindlin shell element has been used for modeling the integrated system of laminated composite shell with PVDF sensor/actuator. The distributed selective modal sensor/actuator system is established to prevent the effect of spillover. Electrode patterns and lamination angles of sensor/actuator are optimized using genetic algorithm. Continuous electrode patterns are discretized according to finite element mesh, and orientation angle is encoded into discrete values using binary string. Sensor is designed to minimize the observation spillover, and actuator is designed to minimize the system energy of the control modes under a given initial condition. Modal sensor/actuator for the first and the second mode vibration control of singly curved cantilevered composite shell structure are designed with the method developed on the finite element method and optimization. For verification, the experimental test of the active vibration control is performed for the composite shell structure. Discrete LQG method is used as a control law.
In this study, the buckling analysis of the vertically curved stiffened web plate was conducted through finite-element analysis, using an eight- and nine-node flat shell element with a substitute shear strain field. To investigate the buckling behavior of the vertically curved web plate with a longitudinal or vertical stiffener under in-plane moment loading, parametric studies were conducted for the variation of the width (b) and ratio of the bending stiffness of the stiffener to that of the plate (${\gamma}=EI/bD$). The static behavior of the vertically curved web plate without a stiffener was also investigated, and then the buckling abilities of the longitudinal and vertical stiffeners were compared under moment loading.
A numerical method is presented in this paper, for buckling analysis of thin arbitrary stiffened composite cylindrical shells under axial compression. The stiffeners can be placed inside and outside of the shell. The shell and stiffeners are operated as discrete elements, and their interactions are taking place through the compatibility conditions along their intersecting lines. The governing equations of motion are obtained based on Koiter's theory and solved by utilizing the principle of the minimum potential energy. Then, the buckling load coefficient and the critical buckling load are computed by solving characteristic equations. In this formulation, the elastic and geometric stiffness matrices of a single curved strip of the shell and stiffeners can be located anywhere within the shell element and in any direction are provided. Moreover, five stiffened composite shell specimens are made and tested under axial compression loading. The reliability of the presented method is validated by comparing its numerical results with those of commercial software, experiments, and other published numerical results. In addition, by using the ANSYS code, a 3-D finite element model that takes the exact geometric arrangement and the properties of the stiffeners and the shell into consideration is built. Finally, the effects of Poisson's ratio, shell length-to-radius ratio, shell thickness, cross-sectional area, angle, eccentricity, torsional stiffness, numbers and geometric configuration of stiffeners on the buckling of stiffened composite shells with various end conditions are computed. The results gained can be used as a meaningful benchmark for researchers to validate their analytical and numerical methods.

Distributed piezoelectric sensor and actuator system has been designed for the active vibration control of shell structure. PVDF is used for the materials of sensor/actuator. To prevent the adverse effect of spillover, distributed modal sensor/actuator system is established. Although shell structure is three-dimensional structure, the PVDF sensor/actuator system can be treated as two-dimensional Finite element programs are developed to consider curved structures having PVDF modal sensor/actuator. The nine-node Mindlin shell element with five nodal degree of freedoms is used for finite element discretization. The electrode patterns and lamination angle of PVDF sensor/actuator are optimized to design the modal sensor/actuator system Genetic algorithm is used for optimization. Sensor is designed to minimize the observation spillover, and actuator is designed to minimize the system energy of the control modes under a given initial condition. Modal sensor/actuator for the first and second modes of singly curved cantilevered shell structure are designed using mentioned methods. Discrete LQG method is used as a control law. Experimental demonstrations of the active vibration control with designed sensor/actuator system have been performed successfully.
The finite solutions of deflection and the corresponding in-plane stress values of the graded sandwich shallow shell structure are computed in this research article via a higher-order polynomial shear deformation kinematics. The shell structural equilibrium equation is derived using the variational principle in association with a nine noded isoprametric element (nine degrees of freedom per node). The deflection values are computed via an own customized MATLAB code including the current formulation. The stability of the current finite element solutions including their accuracies have been demonstrated by solving different kind of numerical examples. Additionally, a few numerical experimentations have been conducted to show the influence of different design input parameters (geometrical and material) on the flexural strength of the graded sandwich shell panel including the geometrical configurations.
Conoidal shells are doubly curved stiff surfaces which are easy to cast and fabricate due to their singly ruled property. Application of laminated composites in fabrication of conoidal shells reduces gravity forces and mass induced forces compared to the isotropic constructions due to the high strength to weight ratio of the material. These light weight shells are preferred in the industry to cover large column free open spaces. To ensure design reliability under service conditions, detailed knowledge about different behavioral aspects of conoidal shell is necessary. Hence, in this paper, static bending, free and forced vibration responses of composite conoidal shells are studied. Lagrange's equation of motion is used in conjunction with Hamilton's principle to derive governing equations of the shell. A finite element code using eight noded curved quadratic isoparametric elements is developed to get the solutions. Uniformly distributed load for static bending analysis and three different load time histories for solution of forced vibration problems are considered. Eight different stacking sequences of graphite-epoxy composite and two different boundary conditions are taken up in the present study. The study shows that relative performances of different shell combinations in terms of static behaviour cannot provide an idea about how they will relatively behave under dynamic loads and also the fact that the points of occurrence of maximum static and dynamic displacement may not be same on a shell surface.

This paper presents geometrically nonlinear formulation of shell problems using the three-dimensional curved shell element, which includs large displacements and large rotations. Formulations of the geometrically nonlinear problems can be derived in a variety of ways, but most of them have been obtained by assuming that nodal rotations are small. Hence, the tangent stiffness matrix is derived under the assumptions that rotational increments are infinitesimal and the effect of finite rotational increments have to be considered during the equilibrium iterations. To study the large displacement and large rotation problems, the restrictions are removed and the formulations of the curved shell element including the effect of large rotational increments are developed in this paper. The displacement based finite element method using this improved formulation are applied to the analyses of the geometrically nonlinear behaviors of the single and double curved shells, which are compared with the results by others.
In this paper, an improved mathematical model is presented for the bending analysis of doubly curved functionally graded material (FGM) sandwich rhombic conoids. The mathematical model includes expansion of Taylor's series up to the third degree in thickness coordinate and normal curvatures in in-plane displacement fields. The condition of zero-transverse shear strain at upper and lower surface of rhombic conoids is implemented in the present model. The newly introduced feature in the present mathematical model is the simultaneous inclusion of normal curvatures in deformation field and twist curvature in strain-displacement equations. This unique introduction permits the new 2D mathematical model to solve problems of moderately thick and deep doubly curved FGM sandwich rhombic conoids. The distinguishing feature of present shell from the other shells is that maximum transverse deflection does not occur at its center. The proposed new mathematical model is implemented in finite element code written in FORTRAN. The obtained numerical results are compared with the results available in the literature. Once validated, the current model was employed to solve numerous bending problems by varying different parameters like volume fraction indices, skew angles, boundary conditions, thickness scheme, and several geometric parameters.
This paper reports on finite element analysis techniques that may be applied to the study of circular hollow structural sections and related bearing connection geometries. Specifically, a connection detail involving curved steel saddle bearings and a Structural Tee (ST) connected directly to a large-diameter Hollow Structural Section (HSS) truss chord, near its open end, is considered. The modeling is carried out using experimentally verified techniques. It is determined that the primary mechanism of failure involves a flexural collapse of the HSS chord through plastification of the chord wall into a well-defined yield line mechanism; a limit state for which a shell-based finite element model is well-suited to capture. It is also found that classical metal plasticity material models may be somewhat limited in their applicability to steels in fabricated tubular members.
