In this paper, we propose a geometric active contour model based on intensity information and curve evolution for detecting region boundaries. We put boundary extraction problem as the minimization of the difference between the average intensity of the region and the intensity of the expanding closed curves. We used level set theory to implement the curve evolution for optimal solution. It offered much more freedom in the initial curve position than a general active contour model. Our methods could detect regions whose boundaries are not necessarily defiened by gradient compared to general edge based methods and detect multiple boundaries at the same time. We could improve the result by using anisotropic diffusion filter in image preprocessing. The performance of our model was demonstrated on several data sets like CT and MRI medical images.
Despite their various similarities, Seoul's' Gangnam and Seocho districts showed different patterns in the adoption of the RFID household-based waste charging system. Gangnam, one of the 25 wealthiest districts in Seoul, first adopted the RFID system in 2012, but decided abandon it a year later due to inconvenience, sanitation, budget limitations, and management related issues. Unlike Gangnam, Seocho, a largely similar district to Gangnam, started to implement the RFID system in 2015 and successfully adopted this innovation. In this paper, we explain the adoption behaviors of these two districts using a Technology Hype Curve Model with 5 stages. Unlike traditional technology adoption theory, the Hype Curve Model concentrates on the big chasm between early majorities and late majorities, which is a core reason for discontinuity in innovation diffusion. Based on our case study result, the early majority easily gave up adoption due to immature technological and institutional infrastructure. However, Seocho district, who waited until the deficiencies had been sufficiently fixed since late majorities, succeeded at incremental diffusion. Since its invention by Gartner cooperation, the Hype Curve Model has not received enough attention in academia. This paper demonstrates its explanatory power for innovation diffusion. Similarly, this paper focuses on the importance of institutional framework in the diffusion of innovation. Lastly, we compare the behavior of two local governments in supporting and diffusing RFID systems to draw relevant policy implications for innovation diffusion.
The problem considered here is to find the optimal discriminant analysis method in growth curve model. It has been studied how to find correct prior probability for the effective classification in discriminant analysis. We use the balanced condition to calculate prior probability. From the informative simulation study, new classification rule for the growth curve model is suggested. The suggested classification rule has better classification result than the other previously suggested method in terms of error rate criterion.

The response of pile foundations under lateral loads are usually analyzed using beam-on-nonlinear-Winkler-foundation (BNWF) model framework employing various forms of empirically derived p-y curves and p-multipliers. In practice, the p-y curve presented by the American Petroleum Institute (API) is most often utilized for piles in granular soils, although its shortcomings are recognized. The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of the BNWF model and to quantify the error in the estimated pile response compared to a rigorous numerical model. BNWF analyses are performed using three sets of p-y curves to evaluate reliability of the procedure. The BNWF model outputs are compared with results of 3D nonlinear finite element (FE) analysis, which are validated via field load test measurements. The BNWF model using API p-y curve produces higher load-displacement curve and peak bending moment compared with the results of the FE model, because empirical p-y curve overestimates the stiffness and underestimates ultimate resistance up to a depth equivalent to four times the pile diameter. The BNWF model overestimates the peak bending moment by approximately 20-30% using both the API and Reese curves. The p-multipliers are revealed to be sensitive on the p-y curve used as input. These results highlight a need to develop updated p-y curves and p-multipliers for improved prediction of the pile response under lateral loading.

Various Models of the moisture content-capillary pressure hysteresie based on the approach of domain concept in porous media are compared with each other, Model III-1(Mualem, 1984) is superio to others as expected. A new model based on Model III-1 is proposed of which asuumption is the linearization of P$$($\theta$) accounting for the pore blockage effect against air-entry. The feature of this model is that only one branch of boundary curve is needed to calibrate it, which is the advantage to Model III-1. The prediction of boundary drying curve from boundary wetting curve using this model is better than that using Model I-1, II-1 compared with the experimental data. This model is to simulate scanning curves, while Model I-1, II-1 is not.

To improve the performance of PID controller of high order systems by model reduction, we proposed two model reduction methods. One, Original model with two point $({\angle}G(jw)=\;-{\pi}/2,\;-{\pi})$ in Nyquist curve used gradient base method and genetic algorithm. The other, Original model without two point$({\angle}G(jw)=\;-{\pi}/2,\;-{\pi})$in Nyquist curve used to add very small dead time. This method has annexed very small dead time on the base model for reduction, and we remove it after getting the reduced model, and , we improved Smith-predictor for a dead-time compensator using genetic algorithms. This method considered four points$({\angle}G(jw)=0,\;-\pi/2,\;-\pi,\;-3\pi/2)$ in the Nyquist curve to reduce steady state error between original and reduced model. It is shown that the proposed methods have more performance than the conventional method.

Substantial experimental and theoretical work exists on the bond characteristics of FRP-concrete adhesive joints. Experimental studies show that the bond strength cannot always increase with an increase in the bond length, and that the ultimate strength is strongly influenced by the concrete strength. To solve this feature, analytic solutions based on fracture mechanics are widely used, and the local shear stress-slip curve with a softening branch is known as more rational model. The analytic solution, however, cannot describe various shapes of model curve. In this study, numerical method using interface element is introduced to express various shapes of model curve. Characteristics of adhesive joint is investigated for the shapes of the model curve and their parameters. And the numerical solutions are compared with the test results of CFRP sheet adhesive joints.
In this study a new analytical model which can describe the relationship between the bridging stress and microstructure has beenproposed in order to investigate the microstructural effect on the R-curve behavior in polycrystalline aluminas since the R-curve can be derived via the bridging stress function. In the currently developed model function the distribution of grain size is considered as a microstructural factor in modeling of bridging stress function and thus the bridging stress function including three constants PM, n, and Cx, can be established analytically and quantitatively. The results indicate that the n value is closely related to the grain size distribution thereby providing a reliability of the current model for the bridging stress analysis. Thus this model which explains the correlation of the bridging stress distribution and microstructual parame-ters is useful for the systematic interpretation of microfracture mechanism including the R-curve behavior in polycrystalline aluminas.

Sharing of CAD data plays a key role in the PLM and a lightweight model is widely used for visualizing and sharing a large data. The lightweight model is mainly composed of triangular elements to minimize file size. There is no problem at all to visually confirm the shape based on these triangular elements but there is a limit to numerically calculate the exact position on the curve or surface. In this paper, a boundary curve generation method using triangular elements is proposed to increase the utilization of lightweight models. After matching connectivity of triangular elements, boundary element edges are extracted. Boundary curves are generated by connecting of these boundary element edges. This proposed method has been tested on several models to demonstrate the feasibility.

A new identification algorithm for the Preisach model is presented. The algorithm treats the identification procedure of the Preisach model as an inverse problem where the independent variables are parameters of the distribution function and the objective function is constructed using only the initial magnetization curve or only tile major loop of the hysteresis curve as well as the whole reversal curves. To parameterize the distribution function, the Bezier spline and Gaussian function are used for the coercive and interaction fields axes, respectively. The presented algorithm is applied to the ferrite permanent magnets, and the distribution functions are correctly found from the major loop of the hysteresis curve or the initial magnetization curve.
