  • With the worldwide trend of controlling the utilization of fossil fuels inducing global climate change, many efforts will have to be made on securing a sustainable energy supply. Tidal current is a concentrated form of gravitational energy, its resource is significant, but limited locations. To effectively capture tidal current energy from the sea, a group of tidal turbines should be formed and positioned with optimal size and spacing for absorbing from multiple points. Thus, the flow field including turbines becomes a huge domain, a so-called tidal farm. It can be very convenient technically and economically if a whole turbine farm is simulated by means of actuator disc thoery. So, the analysis method using actuator discs coupled with a solution of Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations is adopted for actual tidal turbines. Actuator discs have regions where similar forces imposed by actual turbines are applied to a flow. As working in group formation, turbines naturally have interaction effects on one another. Therefore, the present paper investigate the evaluation on the operating performance of tidal farm in terms of the mutual influence among turbine units with various lateral and longitudinal spacing. Authors expect that results of the present study contribute to the development of tidal farm for the future potential energy.

  • This study investigated the problems in current practice of drive-train resonance analysis procedure and suggested solutions. The first problem is the resonance occurrence at the un-identified resonance point by the current practice, as for a solution the force spectrum analysis for each critical force transmitting component was suggested. The second one is the inaccurate estimation of potential resonance point in eigenfrequency analysis because of the non-consideration about the eigenfrequency dependency on rotor-speed, the fine linearization at each rotor speed point all over operational range was proposed to account for the affection. Lastly the insufficient time for resonance activation under run-up simulation condition was recognized as a problem in resonance load increasing analysis, as an alternative, steady state condition was suggested to estimate the maximum load increasing level.

  • This paper presents a new design of magnetic bearing structure for application in Nuclear Power Plant (NPP). The proposed design includes so-called saturated coils which is used to generate the bias flux for bearing almost the whole mass of the rotor, and so-called linear auxiliary coil controlled to stabilize the suspension. The saturated coil is considered as an special electromagnet which is controlled to operate in the region of magnetic saturation in order to minimize the bias current as well as to enhance the magnetic flux density. This strategy will result in a very compact size of magnetic bearing as well as increasing the speed of the response of the current controller. The novel structure is expected to be applied to design very high power gas turbine generator of next generation of fast reactor in which the mass of rotor can reach 50 tons. The total power of the NPP can reach 2,000 MW. Moreover, the issue of arc occurrence between coils is also discussed and two solutions are proposed.

  • Wind farm paralleled with electric power network can supply the power into a power network not only the normal conditions, but also the fault conditions of distribution network. If the fault happened in the power line with wind farm, the fault current level measured in a relaying point might be lower than that of distribution network without wind turbine generator. Consequently, it is difficult to detect the fault happened in the distribution network connected with wind generator. This paper describes the influence of wind turbine generator on the protective relaying system for detecting the fault occurred in a power line network. Simulation results shows that the fault current depends on the fault impedance, location, and the capacity of wind farm and distribution network load.

  • Performance characteristics of propulsion systems applied to UAVs that under development or completed in foreign countries were analyzed. In this study, aircraft mission and performance characteristics of ten UAVs were reviewed and compared with current available civil and military aircraft. Also performance characteristics of UAVs propulsion systems were summarized and engine design parameters were analyzed. Thrust, SFC and design parameters such as pressure ratio and bypass ratio of UAV propulsion system were compared with the current existing civil and military aircraft engines. From this study, the design parameters of the propulsion system applied to the UAV were well understood.

  • In this paper, a maximum output power control of stand-alone cage-type induction generator systems for wind power generation is proposed. The induction generator is operated in a vector-controlled mode, which is excited with d-axis current and of which torque is controlled with q-axis current. The generator speed is controlled by this torque, along which speed the generator produces the maximum output power. The generated power charges the battery bank for energy storage through an ac/dc PWM converter. The proposed scheme has been verified for the wind turbine simulator system which consists of M-G set.

  • SFC(Static Frequence Converter)system has come to be used as start up drive system for large synchronous motor in many industry applications. Many papers have been presented the control algorithm for pumped storage power generation using SFC system but they did not included about start up algorithm of SFC system for gas turbine. This paper presents the field weakening control algorithm for a large synchronous motor using output signal of anti-windup in PI current regulator and the results of experiment show that the proposed algorithm is proper and effective.

  • This paper describes a real-time hardware simulator for a grid-tied Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) wind power system, which consists of an anemometer, a data logger, a motor-generator set with vector drive, and a back-to-back power converter with a digital signal processor (DSP) controller. The anemometer measures real wind speed, and the data is sent to the data logger to calculate the turbine torque. The calculated torque is sent to the vector drive for the induction motor after it is scaled down to the rated simulator power. The motor generates the mechanical power for the PMSG, and the generated electrical power is connected to the grid through a back-to-back converter. The generator-side converter in a back-to-back converter operates in current control mode to track the maximum power point at the given wind speed. The grid-side converter operates to control the direct current link voltage and to correct the power factor. The developed simulator can be used to analyze various mechanical and electrical characteristics of a grid-tied PMSG wind power system. It can also be utilized to educate students or engineers on the operation of grid-tied PMSG wind power system.

  • In order to evaluate the insulation deterioration in the stator windings of five gas turbine generators(137 MVA, 13.8 kV) which has been operated for more than 13 years, diagnostic test and AC dielectric breakdown test were performed at phases A, B and C. These tests included measurements of AC current, dissipation factor, partial discharge (PD) magnitude and capacitance. ${\Delta}I$ and ${\Delta}tan{\delta}$ in all three phases (A, B and C) of No. 1 generator stator windings showed that they were in good condition but PD magnitude indicated marginally serviceable and bad level to the insulation condition. Overall analysis of the results suggested that the generator stator windings were indicated serious insulation deterioration and patterns of the PD in all three phases were analyzed to be internal, slot and spark discharges. After the diagnostic test, an AC overvoltage test was performed by gradually increasing the voltage applied to the generator stator windings until electrical insulation failure occurred, in order to determine the breakdown voltage. The breakdown voltage at phases A, B and C of No. 1 generator stator windings failed at 28.0 kV, 17.9 kV, and 21.3 kV, respectively. The breakdown voltage was lower than that expected for good-quality windings (28.6 kV) in a 13.8kV class generator. In the AC dielectric breakdown and diagnostic tests, there was a strong correlation between the breakdown voltage and the voltage at which charging current increases abruptly ($P_{i1}$, $P_{i2}$).

  • The detail simulation modeling of fully-fed induction generator is investigated through PC based MATLAB/Simulink environment. Generator's stator currents are controlled by indirect vector control method. In this method, generator side converter controls the maximum excitation (air gap flux) by stator d-axis current and controls generator torque by stator q-axis current. Induction generator speed is controlled by tip speed ratio (TSR) upon the wind speed variations in order to generate the maximum output power. The generator torque model is specified as a 3-blade wind turbine with rating, then, the model is simulated under normal operating condition and three different fault conditions. The matlab model designed for fully-fed induction generator based wind farm provides good performance under normal and grid fault conditions. It provides good results for different pwm techniques and fault conditions except the single-phase line to ground fault, which should be verified with real time data from wind farms.
