The radical development of modern mathematics is due to the appearance of Collection Theory by George Cantor. The Set Theory is independent as an area and also closely interrelated with other areas. So its content becomes a common sense and a basic part across the whole area of modern mathematics. Accordingly, the basic element of modern mathematics is helping young children get familiar with set as early as possible. The thinking of set by which children can categorize, make partial sets and correspondences, understand the general characteristic, and conceptualize the discovered relationships is very important for young children. At this point where the Math education for young children is emphasized under the influence of the modernization movement of Math education, the systematic education for building up the set concept as the basic background of number concept during the early childhood is required. On current mathematics education for young children, graphs, the foundation of geometry, time, and patterns have been included in the traditional and practical content related to numbers. However, the education on collection which is the foundation of number concept is insufficient. A study shows that the level of young children's understanding on set is quite high, but the set concept isn't reflected in current Math curriculum for young children. And basic activities neccesary on building up the set concept, such as categorization, comparison, etc. are conducted in kindergardens but unsatisfactory because of those kindergarden teachers' premature understanding on the set concept. In conclusion, the curriculum for young children should be reorganized based on the set concept as the kernel concept. Also, the reappraisal of the training curriculum and the supplementary efucation for kindergarden teachers are urgent for raising the teaching ability of those kindergarden teachers.
The objective of the current study was to compare the execution of hygiene and safety management according to the characteristics of children's food service stations, with the ultimate objective of providing sanitary and safe food service to children. To this end, the study conducted surveys of 73 public and private pre-schools with fewer than 100 children in district A from July 30 to October 31 2015. The differences were evaluated by t-test and analysis of variance. The confidence and validity of the results were analyzed by six food ingredient and facilities management questions, three personal hygiene and facilities management questions, four environmental management questions, and five storage and treatment management questions; for a total of 18 questions. The cumulative distribution of the four factors was 61.569%, and the Cronbach's alpha was 0.821, which indicated that the results were reliable. The results revealed that public pre-schools (a) and home-based pre-schools (b) had different levels of food ingredient and facility management, but no differences in the number of cooks, number of children served, type of food distribution, and the existence of mass food service facilities. The results of the study may be used to develop hygiene and safety management manual and educational contents to promote the health of the children served.
An attempt had been made to obtain current information on induced abortion among currently married women aged 15 to 44. The source of data was 1985 National Fertility and Family Planning Survey conducted by Korea Institute for Population and Health in may 1985. 1. At the time of the survey, 53 percent of currently married women aged 15 to 44 had experienced induced abortion: 25.5 percent of the respondents who had experienced induced abortion only one time and another 27.6 percent more than two times. 2. The proportion of women who had experienced induced abortion seemed to increase according to the advance in age. It seemed that there was no significant difference in the experience rate of induced abortion by academic career, and there was inverse relationship between the experience rate of induced abortion and the age at first marriage. The experience rate if induced abortion by the number of living children was highest among those who had three children as 65.6 percent. 3. To analyze the effect of induced abortion on fertility, this study employed multiple regression analysis as a statistical technique. Instead of index representing fertility level the number of living children served as dependent variable. Independent variables used in analysis included age, age at first marriage, education level, ideal number of children, religion, frequency of induced abortion, total number of pregnancies and participation in labor force. Standardized partial regression coefficient of induced abortion was no less than -0.61. So, it can be concluded that induced abortion offered the great contribution on the birth control. A consistant health education and efficient management of family planning program would be essential for effectiveness of contraceptive practice.
This study is to examine the current problems of teaching gifted children and suggest elements(or factors) to be considered in setting up goals thereof by analyzing incumbent teachers awareness. 121 teachers were arbitrarily selected from 30 different kindergartens located in Seoul and Anyang, and they were interviewed with two parts questionnaires(or opinions) of improving current practice. The first part of the questionnaire is composed of the questions about teachers awareness of gifted children, actual state of teaching gifted children, effects of teaching in kindergarten for gifted children, and desired direction for teaching improvement. The second part of the questionnaire provided interpretation of precociousness by study habit, creativity and definitive properties and asked the number of children qualified in their classes. Since the results of the first interview as to awareness of gifted children were dismal, 40 teachers were thereafter randomly selected again, and the second interview was warranted. The results alarmingly revealed that program of teaching gifted children were barely existing even though the teachers awareness for the needs of special education for the precocious as well of study materials and programs thereof was high. In addition, the teachers familiarity of gifted children was surprisingly low. At the second interview whereby gifted children was explained, the teachers awareness of gifted children was dramatically improved to 40% in comparing with 7.4% at the first interview without explanation of gifted children. Teachers awareness of gifted children was low because of lacking direct or indirect experience of having gifted children and special programs therof in their classes as well as teachers nonchalance. Therefore not only adequate training and education of teachers, but also cultivation of qualified teachers for special programs for the precocious are obligatory. Training of incumbent teachers and determination of gifted children are prerequisite for timely discovery of gifted children and adequate education for them. Development of special education programs and diffusion are also crucial.
The current socioeconomic climate has meant more children spend more time alone at home even for dining. This study was performed to characterize modem Korean childrens´food ecology based on mealtime atmosphere. A total of 705 elementary school students, 347 girls and 358 boys took part in the study. They were chosen evenly from the Seoul metropolitan areas, provincial cities, or rural areas, and were asked to fill out a questionnaire. The questionnaire was categorized to determine various factors related to food ecology, life styles, and health related symptoms. The average age of the study subjects was 11.5 years. The average height, weight, body mass index, and Rohrer index were 143.2cm, 37.6kg, 18.2 and 127.2 respectively. A significant number of children(39.2%) answered their bed time was between 11 and 12 pm. Only 28.3% answered that the whole family has breakfast together, and 47.7% have dinner together. A considerable number of children, 17.8% for breakfast and 6.9% for dinner, answered they eat alone. Most of the children answered they like to have dinner with the whole family. Half of the children answered they do not feel hungry before having breakfast. Proportions of children for their favorite meal time were 66.8%, and 25.4% and 7.8% for dinner, school lunch, and breakfast respectively. The largest proportions of children, 53.3% and 68.7%, have breakfast and dinner at home. Most of the children(75.2%) never purchase their dinner. Forty two% of the children answered they like school lunch, however, 60% of children answered they leave portions of lunch uneaten occasionally or always. Only 38.0% and 46.2% of the children have nutritionally adequate diet for breakfast and dinner. Children having more meals with the whole family possessed a more positive attitude towards breakfast compared to the children who eat with the whole family less frequently. In conclusion, Korea children are exposed to different health threatening food ecology problems related to changing environments, and consistent concern and support from community nutritionists are required.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate how to manage food allergy of pre-school children, focusing on the current status of the food allergy in childcare facilities in Hanam which have less than 100 children. Methods: Targeting 159 preschool childcare facilities, survey was carried out for a month in March, 2015. Recovery rate was 66.7%. 106 surveys out of 159 were available for analysis using SPSS statistical program version 19.0. Results: Among 106 facilities, 58 (54.7%) reported that none of their children had a food allergy and 48 (45.3%) reported one more children had a food allergy. Total number of children having a food allergy was 71. Among them, the occurrences of food allergy in males were significantly more than that of the females (p<0.001). Further, children under 2 years of age had significantly more food allergy than the other ages (p < 0.001). The allergic inducing foods were nuts (23.3%), egg (17.8%), milk and dairy products (16.4%), fish and shellfish (13.7%), instant foods (12.3%), fruits (8.2%), soybean (4.1%), meat (2.7%), and cereals (1.4%) in order, and 6 children out of 71 were allergic to more than 2 food items. The clinical symptoms of the food allergy were a skin reaction (87.9%) and an oropharyngeal & respiratory reaction (12.1%). Majority of childcare facilities (80.3%) didn't serve alternative foods for children with food allergy. Necessity for food allergy education was significantly higher in facilities with food allergy issues than without such issues. Conclusions: The Center for Children's Foodservice Management need to educate workers of childcare facilities and parents about managing food allergy and enforce a plan to provide alternative menu to children with food allergies.

This study analyzes gender bias in children's informational books about science and science careers to determine how these early resources are affecting the disparity between males and females in science and engineering fields. The study focused on the number of male and female scientists both in pictures and text, and how much space was devoted to discussion of scientists of each gender. Overall, the findings of the study show that only 18% of the pictured scientists were female as well as only 16% of the scientists discussed in the text. These numbers are below current industry data that puts the number of females working in science and engineering fields at 26%.
Purpose: Severe acute malnutrition (SAM) is an important public health problem which contributes to significant number of under five deaths. Protocol based management significantly decreases risk of deaths in children with medical complications. Methods: Outcome of children aged 2 months-5 years admitted and fulfilling definition of SAM having diarrhea (group A) was compared to children with SAM having medical complications other than diarrhea (group B). Both groups were managed according to standard recommended protocols and monitored and followed up for 12 weeks after discharge. Results: The average weight gain, defaulter rate, primary failure, secondary relapse rate and readmission rate were similar in both groups. Length of stay in group A was three days longer (p-value=0.039). Discharge rate was comparable with overall 68% of children successfully discharged and 50% of children reaching weight/height > -2 standard deviation at follow-up of 12 weeks. Conclusion: The current management protocol is equally effective for managing children with SAM having diarrhea. Good adherence to management protocol of dehydration and timely modification of therapeutic feeds in children with persistent diarrhea results in satisfactory weight gain.
This study aims to propose the improvement direction of spatial organization of orphanage facilities by reflecting the international trend of child welfare facilities including 'enhancement of habitability', 'opening to the local community' and 'multi-functionality' on the basis of ideas of 'right of housing' and 'normalization'. Orphanage facilities are evolving from 'facilities' to accommodate unfortunate children to the concept of the 'community-care', and the residential space is also rapidly shifting to 'cottage' type resembling a residential type of ordinary family so as to enhance the self-esteem and relationship. To suggest the future-oriented changeability of current orphanage facilities, the present study conducted a nationwide survey of child welfare facilities and four Visiting researches of cottage type orphanage with different locations to investigate the appropriateness of housing type, organization of common use space, mode of management and facilities criteria. The results of this study are following: 1) For enhancement of habitability it is suggested that cottage type with various plans in the form of ordinary housing is appropriate, that the number of children per cottage is six or so, and that the number of less than two or three children per room is recommended. At the same time the adjustment of facilities criteria, simplified or complex, is suggested to support a similar residence pattern to ordinary home. 2) Specialized programs must be introduced to establish a base of welfare-network for community children according to features of location and a complex management must be sought in the connection with neighboring public facilities. 3) To secure the residential environment and quality of life for children, the concept of a simple playground space by the current facilities criteria must be broken away to reinforce the network of various outdoor spaces closely connected with living space.
"The Child culture" is defined as a children's life style in which they interpret their life-situations, using their comprehension system and living out their lives based on those interpretations. Although the current Korean culture of "studying (or learning)" which is referred to as a social phenomenon restraining lively childhood of children, the ideal child culture surely exists. For this research, the total number of 1,049 articles and dissertations published around the year 2000 were analyzed from dual perspectives : value and life of both children and adults. The research literature was reviewed in respect to the following categories : 1) the dimension of how children deal with home life including food, clothing, and shelter, 2) the domain within the boundary of elementary school to understand how they spend their important time, and 3) the domain out of elementary school to understand how they spend their leisure time.
