  • The light-emitting diode (LED) has been used in a variety of industrial fields and for general 0lighting purposes on account of its high efficiency, low power consumption and long lifespan. The LED is driven by direct current; therefore, an AC/DC converter is typically required for its use. An electrolytic capacitor is generally used for stabilizing DC voltage during use of the AC/DC converter. However, this capacitor has a short lifespan, which makes it a limiting factor in LED lighting. Furthermore, LED lighting requires a dimmable control to enable energy savings and fulfil a growing consumer demand. In this paper, the dimmable single-stage power factor correction (PFC) continuous conduction mode (CCM) flyback converter that employs no electrolytic capacitor is presented. The LC resonant filter is alternatively applied to reduce the 120[Hz] ripple on the output. And the optimum value of the LC resonant filter parameters considering both efficient and performance is analysed. Simulation and experimental results verify the satisfactory operation of the converter.

  • As the demand for the Internet of Things grows, research into indoor photovoltaics for wireless power is becoming important. In particular, perovskite has attracted considerable attention due to its superior performance compared to other candidates. However, various surface defects present in perovskite are a limiting factor for high performance. In particular, deep-level surface defects caused by uncoordinated Pb2+ ions directly limit charge transport. In low light environments, this appears to be a more significant hurdle. In this study, ethylenediamine, which can provide covalent bonding to uncoordinated Pb2+ ions through nitrogen, was used as a surface treatment material for indoor photovoltaics. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed that the uncoordinated Pb2+ ions were effectively passivated by the terminal nitrogen of ethylenediamine. As a consequence, a VOC of 0.998 V, a JSC of 0.139 mA cm-2 and a fill factor of 83.03% were achieved, resulting in an indoor photoelectric conversion efficiency of 38.02%.

  • During the past 2 decades, many electric power companies have been searching various solutions in order to supply power with economical and more efficiency in the present transmission utilities. Most interesting method to increase the line capacity of overhead transmission lines without constructing any new line might be to adapt Dynamic Line Rating(DLR). Specified rating is normally determined by any current level, not by conductor temperature. Although specified rating is essential to design transmission line, dip may be the most important factor in limiting transmission capacity. Transmission lines built by the oldest dip criterion among the 3 different design criteria for conductor dip are nearly over one-half of all Kepco's transmission lines. This paper describes an up-rating method for those transmission lines in order to apply DLR technique. Based on limit dip conductor temperature and current of the transmission lines, limitation performance and effectiveness in applying DLR with weather model are analyzed. As a result of analysis, it can be shown that an improved method could be effectively used for increasing the line rating of old transmission line which was built by the design criterion with low dip margin.

  • This paper reports the RF dispersion and linearity characteristics of unpassivated AlGaN/InGaN/GaN high electron-mobility transistors (HEMTs) grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). The devices with a 0.5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ gate-length exhibited relatively good DC characteristics with a maximum drain current of 730 mA/mm and a peak g$_{m}$ of 156 mS/mm. Highly linear characteristic was observed by relatively flat DC transconductance (g$_{m}$) and good inter-modulation distortion characteristics, which indicates tight channel carrier confinement of the InGaN channel. Little current collapse in pulse I-V and load-pull measurements was observed at elevated temperatures and a relatively high power density of 1.8 W/mm was obtained at 2 GHz. These results indicate that current collapse related with surface states will not be a power limiting factor for the AlGaN/InGaN HEMTs.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine current situations about and factors related to expenditures of private education among pre-school children and to provide policy implications useful for future pre-school children education. The subjects of the study were parents of pre-school children under seven years of age, who lived in Seoul and Incheon area. The survey was conducted using parent questionnaire. The major findings of the study are: First, 86.8% of parents of pre-school children use private education and the average expenditure on it was 154, 446 won. Second, major factors determining their private education expenditure are educational level of parents, parents' job characteristics, household income, and region. Third, the most important reason for using private education among parents is to improve and excel in academic performance of their children. Forth, the higher the parents' expected returns from private education are, the higher the expenditure level of private education is. Fitth, the results of the logistic regressions showed that parents' attitudes toward private education was the most important factor in determining household economic burden associated with private education. The odds were 5 times greater for the parent group with strong desire for private education than for the parent group without it and 1.2 times greater for the parent group with high-expected returns from private education than the parent group without it. In conclusion, systematic, universal educational policies need to be developed to provide and support all the parents with pre-school children, given that their current economic burden is substantial. By providing such support, we can help parents focus on public education. This study examining current situations about and determining factors related to private education expenditures among pre-school children collected data limiting only Seoul and Inchoen area, therefore, future studies need to include data collected nationwide for generalizability of the findings. As well, development of more elaborated survey instruments and analytical methods would advance our understanding in the field.

  • Underground tunnelling is one of the sustainable construction methods which can facilitate the increasing passenger transportation in the urban areas and benefit the community in the long term. Tunnelling in various ground conditions requires careful consideration of the stability factor. This paper investigates three dimensional stability of a shallow circular tunnel in a layered soil. Upper bound theorem of limit analysis was utilised to solve the tunnel face stability problem. A three dimensional kinematic admissible failure mechanism was improved to model a layered soil and limiting assumptions of the previous studies were resolved. The study includes calculation of the minimum support pressure acting on the face of the excavation in closed-face excavations. The effects of the characteristics of the layers on the minimum support pressure were examined. It was found that the ratio of the thickness of cover layers particularly when a weak layer is overlying a stronger layer, has the most significant influence on the minimum tunnel support pressure. Comparisons have been made with the results of the numerical modelling using FLAC3D software. Results of the current study were in a remarkable agreement with those of numerical modelling.

  • TerraSAR-X is new radar satellite operated at X-band, multi polarization, and multi beam mode. Compared with C-band or L-band SAR, the X-band system inherently suffers from more temporal decorrelation, but is more sensitive to surface deformation monitoring due to short wavelength (3.1 cm) and high spatial resolution (1m-3m). It is generally expected that sensitivity to estimate surface movement using TerraSAR-X will be increased by the factor of 10, compared to current C-band system with low spatial resolution such as ERS-2, Envisat. Many urban areas are experiencing land subsidence due to water, oil and natural gas withdrawal, underground excavation, sediment compaction, and so on. Monitoring of surface deformation is valuable for effectively limiting damage areas. In addition high accuracy and spatially dense subsidence map can be achieved by X-band InSAR observation, promoting identification and separation of various subsidence processes and leading to enhanced understanding via mechanical modeling. In this study we will introduce some initial InSAR results using new TerraSAR-X SAR data for surface deformation monitoring.

  • Bacterial canker is the largest limiting factor in the cultivation and production of kiwifruit worldwide. Typical symptoms comprise necrotic spots on leaves, canker and dieback on canes and trunks, twig wilting, and blossom necrosis. Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae (Psa), which is the causal agent of kiwifruit bacterial canker, is divided into four biovars based on multilocus sequence analysis of different genes, additional PCR testing of pathogenic genes (argKtox cluster, cfl, and various effector genes), and biochemical and physiological characterization. Bacterial canker caused by Psa biovar 2 designated Psa2 was detected for the first time on the green-fleshed kiwifruit cultivar Hayward in 1988 and the yellow-fleshed kiwifruit cultivar Hort16A in 2006 in Korea. Psa biovar 3 designated Psa3, responsible for the current global pandemics of kiwifruit bacterial canker, began to appear in Korea in 2011 and caused tremendous economic losses by destroying many vines or orchards of yellow-fleshed kiwifruit cultivars in one or several growing seasons. Bacterial canker epidemics caused by both Psa2 and Psa3 are prevalent in Korea in recent years. In this review, we summarize the symptomatology, etiology, disease cycle, diagnosis, and epidemiology of kiwifruit bacterial canker in Korea.

  • The ductility of the system based on the capacity of each structural member constituting the seismic force-resisting system is a significant factor determining the structure's seismic performance. This study aims to provide a procedure to supplement the current seismic design criteria to secure the system's ductility and improve the seismic performance of the steel ordinary moment frames. For the study, a nonlinear analysis was performed on the 9- and 15-story model buildings, and the formation of collapse mechanisms and damage distribution for dynamic loads were analyzed. As a result of analyzing the nonlinear response and damage distribution of the steel ordinary moment frame, local collapse due to the concentration of structural damage was observed in the case where the influence of the higher mode was dominant. In this study, a procedure to improve the seismic performance and avoid inferior dynamic response was proposed by limiting the strength ratio of the column. The proposed procedure effectively improved the seismic performance of steel ordinary moment frames by reducing the probability of local collapse.
