Traffic control technologies without interruption for component replacement of long-span bridges using microsimulation and site-specific data

  • The replacement of damaged components is an important task for long-span bridges. Conventional strategy for component replacement is to close the bridge to traffic, so that the influence of the surrounding environment is reduced to a minimum extent. However, complete traffic interruption would bring substantial economic losses and negative social influence nowadays. This paper investigates traffic control technologies without interruption for component replacement of long-span bridges. A numerical procedure of traffic control technologies is proposed incorporating traffic microsimulation and site-specific data, which is then implemented through a case study of cable replacement of a long-span cable-stayed bridge. Results indicate traffic load effects on the bridge are lower than the design values under current low daily traffic volume, and therefore cable replacement could be conducted without traffic control. However, considering a possible medium or high level of daily traffic volume, traffic load effects of girder bending moment and cable force nearest to the replaced cable become larger than the design level. This indicates a potential risk of failure, and traffic control should be implemented. Parametric studies show that speed control does not decrease but increase the load effects, and flow control using lane closure is not effectual. However, weight control and gap control are very effective to mitigate traffic load effects, and it is recommended to employ a weight control with gross vehicle weight no more than 65 t or/and a gap control with minimum vehicle gap no less than 40 m for the cable replacement of the case bridge.

Electrical Characteristic Changes of ZnO Varistors by Energy Absorption

  • As a ZnO varistor is subjected to electrical and environmental stresses, it degrades gradually, which may result in power interruption by short circuit. This study investigates changes in the electrical characteristics of ZnO varistors due to deterioration owing to energy absorption, and determines the optimal parameters for on-line diagnosis of the varistor. Two types of varistors were used for an accelerated aging experiment involving the application of the $8/20{\mu}s$ standard lightning impulse current. The electrical characteristics in terms of the reference voltage, total leakage current, resistive leakage current, and third-harmonic component of the total leakage current were measured, and their change rates were analyzed. The results revealed that the total leakage current increased slightly with an increase in the varistor absorbed energy, while the resistive leakage current and the third-harmonic component increased apparently. Therefore, the third-harmonic component of the total leakage current was proposed as the optimal parameter for on-line monitoring of ZnO varistor conditions.

A Cost-Effective, Single-Phase Line-Interactive UPS System that Eliminates Inrush Current Phenomenon for Transformer-Coupled Loads

  • Sudden voltage drops and outages frequently disturb the operation of sensitive loads for domestic, commercial, and industrial use. In some cases, these events may even impair the functioning of relevant equipment. To maintain power under such conditions, a UPS system is usually installed. Once a disturbance happens at the grid side, the line-interactive UPS system takes over the load to prevent an interruption. But, due to magnetic saturation of the transformer, a significant inrush current may occur for the transformer-coupled loads during this transition. The generation of such transient currents may in turn decrease the line voltage and activates over-current protecting devices of the system. In this work, a cost-effective, line-interactive UPS system is proposed that eliminates the inrush current phenomenon associated with transformer-coupled loads. The strategy was implemented by connecting a standard current-regulated voltage source inverter (CRVSI) to the secondary winding of the load transformer. During any transient condition at the grid side, the load current is monitored and regulated to achieve either seamless compensation of the load current or complete transferal of load from grid to the inverter. Experimental results were obtained for a prototype under all possible operating conditions so as to validate the performance of the proposed topology.

  • Utilizing the simulation approaches, the dynamic production scheduling system FOLS(Flexible flowshop On-Line Simulation) is developed under the flexible flowshop environment. When an interruption such as machine failure/recovery is occurred at the shop floor, the FOLS system performs evaluations for job selection rule oriented alternatives, and generates a dynamic production schedule based on the collected current shop floor data. For the case study, the FOLS system is applied to the printed circuit card assembly(PCCA) line and simulation results are reported.

  • Based on the Kepco's standard supply terms, the customer should pay for installation the regulating device or protective device which are granted by Kepco in case the customer hinder other customer's electricity usage or it may cause the interruption because of harmonics or waveform distortion. It is necessary to consider the phase angle of voltage, current for harmonics so we can set up the measure of harmonic damages.

  • 본 연구에서는 대전류 구간에서의 아크해석 결과를 이용하여 SLF 차단성능을 예측하기 위하여 과도회복전압 상승률에 따라 전류영점 후 수~수백 마이크로초 동안 $SF_6$ 아크현상 이력과 영점후전류를 계산하여 대전류 구간 마지막 시점에서의 10,000K 이하의 가느다란 잔류아크가 완전히 소호될지 아니면 아크가 다시 재발호될지 판단하였다.

  • This paper proposes the method to increase the current direct load control program by inspecting the problems of the DLC program.   • In this study, we predicted the thermal breakdown of high-voltage interrupter with the characteristics of thermal plasmas such as temperature, pressure and concentration of the ablated material by using a commercial CFD program. The results showed that the pressure build-up inside the chamber was proportional to the magnitude of arcing current because the quantities of heat energy and ablated mass also increase together with the current during the compression process. And during the decompression process, the reverse flow was not coincided with the magnitude of the applied current due to the compressibility of the gas through backflow channel. The present method is expected to be useful for the design of guideline and interruption capacity on the thermal breakdown of a PASB chamber.
